acting chief of security - Lieutenant Worf’s position immediately after the death of Lieutenant Natasha Yar.

Age of Ascension, the - the time in a young Klingon’s life when they become an adult.

Aktuh - deceased Klingon male, a great warrior for the empire. He and Melota are the subjects of an entire Klingon opera.

al’Hmat - the original name of the planet taD, before it was conquered by the Klingon Empire.

al’Hmatti - quadruped beings, able to walk on all fours, or on just its hind legs. The al’Hmatti can also use their hind legs the same as their forelegs to move objects, eat, or work controls. They are large, with bodies covered in white or light colored fur and dark colored skin.

al’Hmatti female - a rebel with yellowish fur who was concerned about re’Trenat meeting with Ambassador Worf.

Alexander - human/Klingon male, the child that Worf and K’Ehleyr had together. Worf carries a framed photo of himself with his son that was taken during their time together on the USS Enterprise-D.

Allicar system - Dominion-held territory. The success of the Battle of Marcan gave Klingon and Starfleet vessels the opportunity to penetrate the Allicar system.

Andorians - a Federation-member race, with blue skin, white hair and two sensory antenna on their heads. A pair of Andorians are featured in the Klingon calisthenics program, after the Brikar attack is repelled.

anti-inebriant - a treatment that humans can take to keep from becoming intoxicated from drinking bloodwine. Commander Riker took an anti-inebriant before transporting from the Enterprise-E to the Gorkon to have drinks with Captain Klag.

Aster, Jeremy - human male, a college student on Earth. As a child, he lived aboard the USS Enterprise-D with his mother, Marla Aster. She died during an away mission that Lieutenant Worf was commanding. Jeremy became an orphan. Worf brought Jeremy into his family, making them brothers.

Arbiter of Succession - title for the one who judges warriors petitioning for the position of chancellor when the previous chancellor has died outside of combat. Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise-D was the first outsider to hold this position after the death of Chancellor K’mpec.

Argosian, an - a massive humanoid, featured in the seventh level of a Klingon calisthenics program.

avian creature - large, feathered creature with massive wings and two hearts used in Klingon calisthenics programs after the Chalnoth attacks.

Azetbur - deceased Klingon female, the daughter of Gorkon. After the murder of her father, she became the chancellor of the high council and continued her father’s work towards peace.

B

B’Arq’s defense - a defensive move used with a bat’leth, which is often preceded by Kilog’s gambit. Worf, son of Mogh, is the only Klingon who has devised a way to penetrate B’Arq’s defense with both a bat’leth and a mek’leth.

B’Elath - junior engineering officer aboard the IKS Gorkon, she once sang all fifteen verses of ‘The Campaign at Kol’Vat’ before a meal.

B’Oraq - Klingon female, the ship’s surgeon assigned to the IKS Gorkon. B’Oraq trained at Starfleet’s Medical Academy, and Doctor Beverly Crusher was her mentor during her time at Starfleet Medical. She has short auburn hair, with a long braid that has a pin of her family’s emblem.

Bak’u planet, the - a class-M world found in the Briar Patch inside Federation territory.

Barge of the Dead, the - in Gre’thor, it takes the dishonored dead to their final fates.

Baruk, IKS - Klingon vessel Ensign Klag served on when he met Chancellor K’mpec.

Bashir, Julian - human male, chief medical officer of Deep Space Nine. He performed the surgery and alterations that changed Kurn, Son of Mogh to Rodek, Son of Noggra.

bat’leth - a long, four-bladed curved weapon with three handholds used by the Klingons.

bat’leth drills - a common practice on Klingon vessels, but crew injuries from the bladed weapons are common.

battle drill - a common practice on Klingon vessels, often supervised by the ship’s First Officer. The senior officers engage in readiness, tactics and weapons while the computer simulates the battle conditions.

Battle of HarOs - an expressionist painting done by Lieutenant Commander Data, and given to Lieutenant Worf as a birthday gift during the seventh year of the USS Enterprise-D’s voyage.

Battle of Marcan V, the - the battle with the Dominion forces during the final months of the war where the IKS Pagh was destroyed. Klag was the only Klingon survivor.

bekk - the rank held by noncommissioned officers in the Klingon Defense Force.

Betazed - a Federation-member world. During the Dominion War, Betazed became a conquered territory, later liberated by Starfleet. In late 2375, Commander Deanna Troi was on Betazed, assisting with the reconstruction efforts.

bloodwine - a Klingon alcoholic beverage often served out of barrels. It can also be bottled.

bok-rat liver - one of the Klingon delicacies served at Ambassador Worf’s reception in Ten-Forward. The dish was properly stewed.

bone-knitter - medical tool used by Doctor B’Oraq to repair Captain Klag’s seventeen broken ribs.

Borg, the - cybernetic beings based out of the Delta Quadrant. They assimilate other species and technology in the pursuit of perfection.

Breen, the - non-allied race that joined the Dominion during the final months of the war to conquer the Alpha Quadrant.

bregit lung - one of the Klingon delicacies served at Ambassador Worf’s reception in Ten-Forward.

Brikar - a Federation-member race, they have a rock-hard skin and chiseled features. Cadet Worf was the roommate to Cadet Zak Kebron, a Brikar, at Starfleet Academy. A Brikar is used in the Klingon calisthenics programs, after the attacks from the Nausicaan, the mugato and the Argosian.

C

calisthenics program - a holodeck program available on the Gorkon, that features a skeletal creature armed with a two-bladed axe and a reptilian creature armed with a mace, as well as a mugato, a Brikar, Andorians, and others.

Campaign at Kol’Vat, The - a Klingon opera that is fifteen verses long, it tells of a battle at Goqlath Castle in Kol’Vat.

Capellans - non-aligned race, from which the Klingon Empire imports topaline.

Cardassia - the home star system of the Cardassian Union.

Carraya system - a star system within Romulan territory, where Worf rescued Toq and a handful of survivors from a crashed ship during his time on the USS Enterprise-D. In truth, it was the site of a prison camp, where the survivors of Khitomer had been held. Toq was one of the children of prisoners who chose to return to the Klingon Empire.

Ch’Targh, Captain - Klingon warrior that Commander Drex was ordered to report to upon his arrival in the HuDyuQ.

cha’DIch - Klingon term for ‘second’. If a warrior is accused of a crime, he is unable to defend himself in combat and must have a cha’DIch. When Lieutenant Worf was on trial before the Klingon High Council for his father’s crimes, Captain Jean-Luc Picard served as Worf’s second, after Kurn was injured.

Chalnoth - a non-aligned warrior race, a Chalnoth is featured in one of the Gorkon's calisthenics programs after the two Andorians.

chancellor - leader of the Klingon High Council and the supreme commander of the empire’s citizenry.

chech’tluth - a strong, heated Klingon beverage Ambassador Worf drank at his reception in Ten-Forward. It was also offered to him during his first meeting with Prime Minister em’Rlakun.

Crusher, Beverly - human female, the chief medical officer onboard the USS Enterprise-E. While serving on the USS Enterprise-D, she had a brief relationship with Ambassador Odan, a joined Trill. During her time at Starfleet Medical, she became a mentor to the Klingon B'Oraq.

Crusher, Wesley - human male, the only son of Doctor Beverly Crusher. Wesley spent several years serving on the USS Enterprise-D as an acting ensign. He attended Starfleet Academy, but after two years as a student there, Wesley received a vision of his father, Jack Crusher, and left Starfleet to evolve to a higher plane of existence.

D

d’k tahg - Klingon weapon, a blade used by warriors. They are personalized, and the hilts contain information about the warrior’s family. Often used during personal challenges, it is an insult to take a warrior’s d’k tahg and leave them alive.

Data, Lieutenant Commander - sentient artificial lifeform, second officer/operations manager of the USS Enterprise-E. Data and Worf served together on the USS Enterprise-D.

Dax, Curzon - deceased Trill male, the former ambassador to the Klingon Empire. Shortly before he died, the Dax symbiont was passed on to Jadzia.

Dax, Ezri Lieutenant - Trill female, assigned as the station counselor on Deep Space Nine. Ezri Tigan received the Dax symbiont after Jadzia Dax’s death. Three months later, Captain Sisko convinced her to join the crew at Deep Space Nine.

Dax, Jadzia - deceased Trill female, was married to Lieutenant Commander Worf at the time of her death. She served on as the senior science officer for Deep Space Nine for six years, as well as commanding the Defiant on several missions during the Dominion War. Worf carries a framed photo of himself with her, taken on their wedding day.

Death to the Klingons - the battle cry of the al’Hmatti rebels.

Deep Space Nine - Cardassian-built station located in the Bajoran system, considered one of the most important strategic outposts in the Alpha Quadrant. For the past seven years, it has been Bajoran property and administered by Starfleet while the Bajoran government petitioned for Federation membership. Lieutenant Commander Worf served on Deep Space Nine as the Strategic Operations Officer and the station’s second officer.

DeSoto, Captain - one of the al’Hmatti rebels used misinformation about Captain DeSoto of the Endeavor to test Ambassador Worf after the Klingon had beamed down into the caves of taD.

disruptor - Klingon directed energy weapon.

Dixieland jazz - a human style of music, played by Commander Riker at Ambassador Worf’s reception in Ten-Forward on the USS Enterprise-E.

Doctor Beverly - the nickname that Ambassador Odan had for Doctor Crusher during their time together on the USS Enterprise-D.

Dominion, the - the galactic power from the Gamma Quadrant, led by the Founders, administered by the Vorta and defended by the Jem’Hadar. In the Alpha Quadrant, the Dominion was allied with both the Cardassian Union and the Breen. Several governments signed non-aggression treaties with the Dominion prior to the Dominion War.

Dominion War, the - conflict that started shortly after the Cardassian Union joined the Dominion from the Gamma Quadrant. The Klingon Empire was allied with the Federation against the Dominion. After almost a year, the Romulans joined the fight against the Dominion. The war lasted for over two years, until the Founders were convinced to surrender.

Dralnok - a Cardassian planet that the Klingons conquered during the war, it is similar to taD geologically.

Drex, Commander - Klingon male, the son of Chancellor Martok. Drex has a slight build, wispy mustache and a wide mouth. He was serving as the Gorkon’s First Officer during it’s shakedown cruise and the taD mission.

Duras - deceased Klingon male, former member of the Klingon High Council. While challenging Gowron for the position of chancellor, Duras killed Ambassador K’Ehleyr aboard the USS Enterprise-D. Lieutenant Worf avenged her death by killing Duras aboard his own vessel.

Duras sisters, the - Lursa and B’Etor, the sisters of Duras. The two women challenged Gowron’s claim to the leadership of the Klingon Empire, and began a civil war with Romulan support. The two were killed when their ship was destroyed by the USS Enterprise-D, in orbit of Veridian III.

E

Earth - the third planet in the Sol star system, home planet to the human race and one of the founding member-worlds of the United Federation of Planets.

Element 604 - an unnamed element, first found in the crust Dralnok and later in the crust of taD. Element 604 was also found in an asteroid field near taD.

em’Rlakun, Prime Minister - al’Hmatti female, the leader of the al’Hmatti parliament on taD. Though unnecessary, she wore a leather vest with the Klingon emblem over her silver-gray fur.

emotion chip - an addition to Data’s programming that allowed him to experience human emotions.

Endeavor - re’Trenat, the al’Hmatti rebel leader, used misinformation about Captain DeSoto of the Endeavor to test Ambassador Worf after the Klingon had beamed down into the caves of taD.

Enterprise-D, USS - Galaxy-class vessel destroyed during an attack by the Duras sisters in orbit of Veridian III. Captain Jean-Luc Picard commanded the ship for seven years and a half years.

Enterprise-E, USS - Sovereign-class vessel under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard. The Enterprise-E took Ambassador Worf from Earth to the Klingon – Federation border.

Excalibur, USS - Ambassador-class vessel assigned to the former Thallonian Empire, under the command of Captain Mackenzie Calhoun. Ambassador Worf knew several members of the Excalibur’s senior crew, including Commander Shelby, Lieutenant Kebron, Lieutenant Soleta, and Lieutenant Mark McHenry.

F

Farragut, David Admiral - deceased human male, famous naval leader that was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx on Earth in the 1800s.

Federation, the - the common shortened name for the United Federation of Planets.

Federation Council, the - the governing body of the United Federation of Planets.

Ferengi - a non-aligned race, the Ferengi are humanoid, with large ears, four-lobed brains and blue fingernails.

First City, the - the capital city of the Klingon Empire on Qo’noS.

First Minister - the title for the elected leader of the Bajoran government, currently held by Shakaar Edon

fleet liaison - Commander Drex’s new position on HuDyuQ, a promotion from First Officer of the Gorkon.

G

gagh - one of the Klingon delicacies served at Ambassador Worf’s reception in Ten-Forward. Worf was disappointed that it wasn’t served live.

ge’Tvrona - al’Hmatti male who worked directly under Kori’s supervision at the topaline refinery on taD.

Gelk, IKS - Toq’s second posting before joining the crew of the IKS Gorkon.

General Koord Medal of Honor - an award given to members of the Defense Force who prove themselves in battle. Takus was earned this award during a border skirmish against the Romulans in 2360.

ghojmoHwI’ - the Klingon term for ‘teacher’ or ‘mentor.’

gladst - one of the Klingon delicacies served at Ambassador Worf’s reception in Ten-Forward.

Glione, the - the flagship of the Kreel squadron that attacked the Gorkon in orbit of taD.

glob fly - a common insect within Klingon territory.

Goqlath Castle - the setting for the opera ‘The Campaign at Kol’Vat.’ The Klingon Krim was once able to lead his forces in an attack against the castle by having his soldiers slit the throats of the guards during a moonless night. The ruins are still visible in Kol’Vat.

Goran, Bekk - noncommissioned officer onboard the Gorkon who had a disruptor that had been in his family for a hundred years.

Gorkon, IKS - one of the new Qang-class vessels, under the command of Captain Klag, the Hero of Marcan.

Gowron - deceased Klingon male, former Chancellor of the Klingon Empire. Worf supported Gowron for years, until the invasion of Cardassia. During the Dominion War, Gowron began sending General Martok on deadly, pointless missions to lower the general's popularity with the Klingon people. Worf killed Gowron in honorable combat during a mission briefing on Deep Space Nine and named Martok as the new chancellor.

grapok sauce - common condiment for the Klingon dish racht.

Gre’thor - the Klingon version of Hell, for the dishonored dead.

Grishnar - the nickname that Lieutenant Toq had for Assistant Chief Engineer Vall.

Grishnar cat - a cowardly animal common in the Klingon Empire.

Grul, Supervisor - an older Klingon female, Kori’s supervisor at the topaline refinery on taD. She also raised young Tiral after his parents were killed.

gunner - title for the tactical officer aboard Klingon vessels.

H

Ha’DibaH - Klingon term for ‘animal’, often used as an insult.

hand scanner - hand-held device used by Bekk Krevor when she and Ambassador Worf beamed down into the caves of taD.

Hegh’ta, IKS - Klingon Bird of Prey that Commander Kurn and Lieutenant Worf served on together during the Klingon Civil War in the 2360s.

Hero of Marcan, the - the title given to Klag after the Battle of Marcan. As a reward, the Klingon Empire gave him command of the new IKS Gorkon.

High Council, the - ruling body of the Klingon Empire, headed by the chancellor.

holodeck - holographic technology recently added to Klingon vessels, they are used for military training. Captain Klag used it to relive the Battle of Marcan V.

Homeworld, the - for the Klingons, Qo’noS is their homeworld. After the Gorkon’s shakedown cruise was a success, Captain Klag ordered a return to the Homeworld.

House of Crusher - Lieutenant Vall identified Doctor Beverly Crusher as Beverly of the House of Crusher when they met on the Gorkon.

House of K’Tal - the House of the civilian engineer Takus.

House of Lorgh - Toq’s adopted home, after his rescue from the Carraya system. The house was close to Worf’s own House of Mogh.

House of Martok - Chancellor Martok’s house, in which Worf, son of Mogh is a part, as well as Drex and Alexander.

House of Mogh - Worf and Kurn’s House, named for their father. It was a proud, influential House before Worf accepted discommendation in the 2360s to save the empire from civil war. Years later, the house was reinstated after Worf supported Gowron against the House of Duras. Gowron later dissolved the house, when Worf refused to join him for the invasion of Cardassia.

House of Palkar - Commander Kurak’s House, a member has always served in the Defense Force for the Klingon Empire.

HuDyuQ - planet within Klingon territory that has a weapons development facility. Governor Tiral was assigned to HuDyuQ from taD, and Commander Drex was transferred to the facility to assume to position of fleet liaison.

jatyIn - Klingon term for legendary spirits of the dead that posses the living.

jeghpu’wI’ - Klingon term meaning ‘conquered people’. It is the status given to the citizens of conquered planets within the Klingon Empire, not slaves to the empire, but not full citizens, either.

Jem’Hadar - genetically bred soldiers of the Dominion.

K

K’Ehleyr - deceased half Klingon/half Terran female, former Federation Ambassador to the Klingon Empire. She and Worf were a romantic couple during his time at Starfleet Academy. They were reunited during the second year of the Enterprise-D’s mission, the two mated and produced a son, Alexander. Two years later, K’Ehleyr was killed by Duras during his bid to become the Chancellor of the Klingon Empire.

K’Len, IKS - Toq’s first posting after joining the Klingon Defense Force during the Dominion War.

K’mpec - deceased Klingon male, former chancellor of the empire. He led the empire longer than any other chancellor did in Klingon history, until he was slowly poisoned by Duras.

K’mqar, IKS - Klingon vessel, M’Raq last served the Defense Force as the K’mqar’’s First Officer.

K’Tal, Councilor - one of the more respected members of the Klingon High Council, Kargan was a nephew of K’Tal.

K’Ton - deceased Klingon male, the father of M’Raq and the grandfather of Klag.

Kahless - the greatest warrior in Klingon history, founder of the Klingon Empire. A clone of Kahless holds the position of Emperor and sees to the spiritual needs of the Klingon Empire.

Kahless II - the clone of Kahless, Doctor Crusher conducted blood tests of the clone when he was brought aboard the Enterprise-D. Her actions earned her a mention in the fourth verse of the song of Kahless’ return.

Kalax, Governor - the Klingon governor of taD in 2371, when the al’Hmatti rebels overthrew the Klingon presence on their world. The governor committed suicide in disgrace.

Kargan - deceased Klingon male, commander of the IKS Pagh at the time of its destruction in the final months of the Dominion War. When Commander Riker served on the Pagh, Kargan had been in command then, as well.

Kebron, Zak Lieutenant - Brikar male, chief of security onboard the USS Excalibur. He and Worf were roommates at Starfleet Academy. After Worf became an ambassador, Kebron sent Worf a simple, one-word text message – ‘CONGRATULATIONS.’

Kegren, Lieutenant - an older Klingon male, served as the Gorkon’s operations officer during it’s shakedown cruise. Shortly after the record of battle began, Ensign Toq killed Kegren in honorable combat.

Khitomer Accords - the peace treaty between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire. When the Klingons invaded Cardassia, the Federation refused to support the action, so the Klingons withdrew from the Khitomer Accords. When Cardassia joined the Dominion and repelled the Klingons, Captain Benjamin Sisko of Deep Space Nine convinced Chancellor Gowron to agree to the second Khitomer Accords, a new treaty between the Federation and the Klingons.

Khitomer massacre - the destruction of the Klingon colony of Khitomer at the hands of the Romulans. There were only two survivors, a six-year old Worf and his nurse, Kahlest.

Kiln - one of Chief Engineer Takus’ assistants at the topaline refinery on taD.

Kilog’s gambit - a move with a bat’leth that is usually followed by B’Arq’s defense.

Klag, Captain - Klingon male, commander of the IKS Gorkon. When Commander Riker served aboard the IKS Pagh, Klag was the ship's Second Officer. He was serving as the First Officer of the IKS Pagh at the time of its destruction during the Dominion War.

Klingon Defense Force - the military of the Klingon Empire.

Klingon restaurant - one of the eateries located on the Deep Space Nine’s Promenade.

Koosbane - located outside of Klingon space, it is the only planet in orbit around a blue giant. Like taD, it is covered in ice over a saline sea. The planet was the site of an archaeological survey in the mid2360s, and it was learned that the residents of the planet had died seven million years ago. It is a week away from taD, at a speed of warp six.

Kor, Dahar Master - deceased Klingon male. Kor was a legendary warrior of the Klingon Empire at the time of his death during the Dominion War. Early in his career, he led an invasion force to Organia and faced-off against Captain Kirk of the USS Enterprise.

Kori - an overweight Klingon male, stationed on taD as a civilian supervisor of one of the topaline refineries. He was the younger brother of Captain Larok of the IKS Sompek.

Korvad system - star system within Klingon territory, the location of taD.

krada legs - one of the Klingon delicacies served at Ambassador Worf’s reception in Ten-Forward.

Kreel, the - long-time enemies of the Klingon Empire. Klingon vessels are under standing orders to destroy any Kreel vessel that attacks them.

Kreel squadron - six Kreel vessels arrived at taD and attacked the IKS Gorkon while Ambassador Worf and Bekk Krevor were in the caves of taD. During the battle with the Gorkon, the Klingons referred to each of the Kreel vessels by number, one through six.

Krevor, Bekk - Klingon female; Commander Drex assigned her to Ambassador Worf during his time on the Gorkon as an insult to the ambassador. She had straight black hair and dark eyes.

Krim - deceased Klingon male, the hero of ‘The Campaign at Kol’Vat.’

Kurak, Commander - Klingon female, the chief engineer of the IKS Gorkon. Kurak was a civilian engineer when she was invited by Doctor Crusher to the USS Enterprise-D to learn about a new metaphasic shielding technology. After the death of the Ferengi scientist, Reyga, Doctor Crusher suspected Kurak of killing him.

Kurn - Klingon male, Worf’s younger brother. The two had grown-up to adulthood apart from each other, but reunited onboard the USS Enterprise-D in the mid2360s when their father, Mogh, was being accused of betraying the empire and allowing the massacre at Khitomer. After supporting Gowron against the House of Duras during the Klingon civil war, Kurn became a member of the High Council. Years later, when Worf refused to support Gowron during the invasion of Cardassia, the House of Mogh lost their ships, land, and reputation. Kurn went to Deep Space Nine to be killed by his brother, the one man who could restore his honor. A few days later, Kurn’s memory was wiped, and his appearance altered and he became Rodek, son of Noggra.
