The Runabout is a long-range shuttlecraft often placed at space stations to perform of station missions. The Runabout can easily be refitted for each mission with, for example, torpedo launchers for tactical missions. The vessel is extraordinarily well armed for such a small ship and was often used to fight the Maquis before the Dominion exterminated them.
