At first looks the Saber looks like a less powerful Defiant which is more economical yet capable of long-range missions. The Defiant is rubbish at Long-range due to the lack of decent quarters, the fact the infirmary and shuttlebays are very small, the only replicators are in the mess-hall and there are no holodecks. However the Saber has all of these. The Saber is often used as a Scout. The Saber is powerful for it's size but it is not nearly as powerful as the Defiant Class.

(Note: The Saber can be spelt Saber or Sabre. The DS9 tech manual spells it both ways but the Encyclopaedia spells it Saber so that's what I go with.)
