The USS Bridgeport is an Excelsior-Class ship which has been refitted and upgraded considerably in order to greatly improve the lifespan of such an old class of vessel. As a result of this, it can almost be considered as an entirely new class of vessel - in fact it is arguably the newest kind of Starship there is at StarFleet as this is the first time an Excelsior-Class cruiser has operated for the StarFleet Tactical Command Group in this configuration.

The USS Bridgeport has a maximum personnel capacity of 2500 people with a standard crew of 450. Each crew-member has 125 cubic meters of space for himself. The senior officers have 150 cubic meters of space. The maximum speed of the USS Bridgeport is warp 9.75. Emergency speed (with safeties disengaged) is warp 9.999 for up to 28 hours, if warp engines were fully operational before going to warp. The normal cruising speed is warp 8.3. Although the USS Bridgeport has been refitted (mainly to serve as a technical/research vessel), it still carries a full complement of weapons.

The defensive construction of the Bridgeport is considerable. It is fitted with a new kind of shield which produces a field around the ship which can disperse beam weapons. It also has a complete set of standard issue starship shields. To supply all those shields the Bridgeport has a double shield generating core. to further re-inforce the ship it also has a double, and at some places even a triple-thickness, ceramo-titanium hull.
