His name was John.
Very few knew much about him beyond that. To us all, he was T'Maekh tr'Lennex. Romulan, Starfleet Intelligence Officer then XO, friend, husband...
But that was all in the simming world. The world that has brought us all together. The world we've created, that we use as creative outlet or escape from the real world. The world in which John shined for a while. He first joined the Sunfire in the fall of 2001, and added both excitement and quality to the crew and the story. And he made many friends there, real world friends, even if they never met face to face.
Such a friendship led him to help create IDF's first successful starbase. Vrona and Lennex were best friends in our little Star Trek universe, and Zach and John were good friends through the assistance of the internet.
It's hard... to loose a member of your crew, of your organization... when you know them even a little. It's so hard when he's more than just another member. When he's a great member. When he's a core member. But when he's a friend...
I remember now, I couldn't for a while, but I can again now, the time we served together on the Sunfire. I remember how he was the last one of us subordinates to stick with it. Simming meant so much to him. Not just his own character, but the whole package. The sim itself, the people, the story. He wanted to try and keep the Sunfire afloat despite all the issues. He managed to be more loyal to it than I. And if you know me, then you know how very much he must have cared. Vrona had already left for a better job, and when I told John I was retiring, we talked for a while about options for the Sunfire, what might be able to be done for it.
He was a good writer, as well as poster and in getting others to post. Lord, there was such good stuff he did, and he let me do with his character's family. More and more is coming back to me now. Great story lines, engaging, emotional, surprising, flexible, and all around fun.
In the end, he had to leave as well. But Vrona gave him another chance to continue his original character Lennex. And gave me the opportunity to sim with John again! It was... an experience. Good, definitely, and some not. But through it all he called me friend. I didn't think much of it before now. Many call me friend. Now all I want to do is be able to apologize to him. For many things. And just wish I had the chance to tell him what I really thought of him, the good stuff, even if it is only little I knew of him... John.
