Explanation of Borough Coat of Arms
The Shield
The shield is divided by a chevron which was a feature of the former arms of
both Stourbridge and Coseley. The pears come from the Stourbridge arms to
represent Worcestershire
and the 'roundle barry wavy' in the centre comes of those of Brierley Hill and
represents the ford across the Stour which gave its name to both Oldswinford and
Kingswinford. The two lions rampant in the upper part of the shield come
from the arms of Halesowen and the Salamander in flames below from the Dudley
County Borough arms.
The Supporters
The dexter figure (on the left to the viewer) is a canon of the
Premonstratensian Order which founded Halesowen Abbey. The sinister
supporter (right hand) is an angel from the arms of the Earls of Dudley.
The Crest
The helmet with visor closed denotes a municipal corporation and the
walled crown its Borough status. Sedgley Beacon appeared on both the
badge of Sedgley Urban District Council and the Coseley arms. The rose
refers to the briars which gave their name to Brierley Hill and the Staffordshire
Knot to the other country which was the original shire for a large part of the
area.
The Badge
Below the shield the badge represents Dudley Castle, the golden fleece
Stourbridge from the local tanning industry and the escallops are from the arms
of Halesowen.
