Just say NO! (to Japanese police)
Topic: adviceS
If the cops come to call in Japan....

1) Politely avoid as best you can, leaving your house and willing going to the cop station.
An arrest warrant in Japan is tough to get and most likely they'll pick on some other FG. Important to note that police can do almost anything, including searching your home, "IF" you give them permission or allow it. So, sure police can "ask" but you don't have to give them an answer and the crucial point is how they behave when the answer is no, "I don't want to talk to you. Once you're in the station, the cops have 12+ days to torture you without formal charges: Think rubber hose, dogleash optional.

2) Lawyers in Japan are honor-bound to "serve society" as well as you. Sounds nice, don't it. It AIN'T. Japanese lawyers serve society by ratting you out; client privilege is not sacrosanct in Japan.

3) Except for driving, ALWAYS claim you were drunk.
The Shinto gods were all drunks and all things can be forgiven if you were drunk. Pour booze all over your clothing and take a good swig.

Oh and "Absolutely refuse to be budged."

In most cases of 'Gaijin and the Law in Japan' the first two things before calling a lawyer that you should do is
--->one find and hire a competent interpreter that will accompany you to any interviews ...

--->The other thing you need to do is before the cops arrive or at the first chance you get is write down everything that has happened so far and continue to keep copious notes (including everybody’s name and title) as you go along. Once you have that written down, memorize it and then STICK TO IT through hell and high water. Absolutely refuse to be budged.

In Japan, you've got no "rights" per se
However, if you're real polite and nicey-nice you can refuse to talk without your own interpreter. This trick works better outside Tokyo police interpreters are few.

The way Nick Baker claims he got screwed was he refused to talk, they threw him jail for 7 months of torture. AND THEN his police interpreter made him sign a "confession" all in Japanese.
Lesson: Never sign anything in Japanese and never believe a police interpreter.

Oh and, yeah, in jail the cops will steal your notes. But writing them all out beforehand and memorizing them is what Steve's talking about..

So many times, I heard the same sad story from a detainee: "I talked to some skinny cop and he said I would be charged/free/castrated in a hour."
