The Akira is one of Starfleet's post Wolf 359 ships, as a result it is a heavily armed warship that was meant to battle the Borg. The Akiras are also highly maneuverable starships. Since they have been put into service the Akiras have proven themselves extremely capable ships and are becoming an increasingly large part of the fleet. Commonly assigned in strike groups, the Akira is an effective deterant to any threat.

The Akira class is designated as a Heavy Cruiser, and although its primary mission is one of peaceful exploration it is modelled to act as a carrier and tactical support ship. Able to respond to all threat quickly and effectively, it has ablative armour hull, advanced shields, and powerful weapons. An interesting feature of this class is that it devotes a vast part of its internal volume to fly-through shuttle bays, which reach from aft to stern. The rear bays are used by shuttles during combat as the vessels gain a degree of protection from the overhanging warp naccelles and catamaran-style arms of the split engineering hull. Shuttle operations are oveseen from a dedicated command module on the weapons pod.



USS Wolverine is the first of the Flight-IIA Akira Class Starships. Increases in over all power such as impulse drive power and phaser power were primary improvements. Minor increases in sensor arrays and shielding were also a part of the Flight-IIA package. The hull of the Wolverine was also reinforced with increased armor plating, also stronger structural integrity field generators were added to augment the hulls strength.

Named for the ferocious "Wolverine." A Wolverine is noted as being small and fast, having ferocious claws. Normally travelling alone. However, another association to the name Wolverine has brought a close similarity in character to the famed comicbook 'Superhero' by the same name.
