DA LAT LAM DONG is the third and the largest plateau province on the Central Highlands. LAM DONG is a forest province with forest coverage accounting for 70% of the total area. The mountain resort town of Da Lat is the capital of Lam Dong. More than 50 years ago, DA LAT has become famous for its favourable climatic conditions which are very useful for rehabilitation purpose. DA LAT offers an average temperature of about 10oC in winter time and 20oC in summer. Thanks to the warm weather, the whole city of DA LAT is a great garden of flower in blossom the year round. DA LAT is also famous for its expanse of pine forests and many beautiful water falls and lakes. |
THAC PRENN THAC PRENN (Prenn Water Fall) : The water fall is located at the foot of the Prenn Mountain Pass. The foot of the fall is a small valley covered with flowers and pine trees. The cascading water is falling down over a small bridge spanning the small lake, which allows visitors to tread on the bridge to enjoy the feeling of being under the gently cascading layer of water. THAC DATANLA (Datanla Water Fall) : Unlike Prenn Water Fall, this Datanla Water Fall is not provided with a magnificent mountain background. The cascading water falls down to the ground before disappearing again through layer after layer of marble lying scattered in a small stream. Legend has it that this was the place where fairy ladies from the heaven often gathered together for bathing. Thus this flat stream portion has been named SOUI TIEN (Stream of Fairy Ladies). THAC GUGA (Guga Water Fall) : The water falling from above is divided into two cascading parts. The one on the right is gently running down while the other on the left is more powerful falling down with such a velocity it makes water ricocheting after touching the marble at the bed of the fall THAC GUGA (Guga Water Fall) : The water falling from above is divided into two cascading parts. The one on the right is gently running down while the other on the left is more powerful falling down with such a velocity it makes water ricocheting after touching the marble at the bed of the fall. |
THAC CAM LY THAC CAM LY (Cam Ly Water Fall) : The lake in the city is supplied with water by a small stream running to the north of the lake. On the other side of the lake, there is another small stream that brings water from the lake down to the western part of the city. This small spring runs beneath a bridge and near a bus station. Beneath the bridge is a small dam that is used to contain water in the lake to a desired level. Both streams to and from the lake are named Cam Ly. The stream that runs from the lake on the southern bank makes a turn to the west of the city. At a location two kilometres from the lake, the water in the stream has to run through a rough bed of the stream which is full of big boulders. These boulders are the components that together make the famous water fall called Cam Ly. |
HO THAN THO HO THAN THO (Lake of Sighs) is situated on top of a high hill covered with pine forests. The lakescape looks very poetic with the vast and tranquil water surface being compared to a human being in meditation. Standing on the edge of the lake, visitors can see a small earth path running towards the forests. The only sound that can be heard comes from the pine forests where the path disappears. The continuous sound reminds of repeated sighs from an invisible human being. The existence of the lake has been surrounded with many love stories and legends with sorrowful endings when the heroines always drowned themselves in the lake to keep for ever their true love they had once enjoyed. One legend has it that Mai Nuong and Hoang Tung met here in 1788 while he was hunting and she was picking mushrooms. They fell in love and sought their parents' permission to marry. But at that time, Vietnam was threatened by a Chinese invasion. Heeding Emperor Quang Trung's call-to-arms, Hoang Tung joined the army without waiting to tell Mai Nuong. Unaware that he had gone to war and afraid that his absence meant that he was no longer in love with her, Mai Nuong sent words to Hoang Tung to meet her at the lakeside. When he did not turn up, she was overcome with sorrows and to prove her love to him, she threw herself into the lake and drowned. Thereafter, the lake has been known as Lake of Sighs. P alaces : DA LAT has three magnificent and big palaces which are referred to as Palace 1, Palace 2 and Palace 3. They are accessible through long flights of brick steps for walk and gently descending paths for cars. Palace 1 and Palace 2 were owned by French high-ranking officials during the French domination in Vietnam. The third and last palace was owned by Bao Dai (the last king of Nha Nguyen). Interior arrangement of the palace is open to public viewing. HOA VIEN DA LAT (DA LAT flower Park) is regionally famous for its diversified species of flowers. It is considered a kind of flower museum which houses a fine collection of flowers found in Vietnam and elsewhere in the world. |
