MEKONG DELTA

AN GIANG
AnGiang is a province in the western region of South-Vietnam. The province is inhabited by the Kinh (92% of the total population), the Khmer (5%), the Cham (1.5%) and the Hoa (1.5%). AnGiang has long been famous for its traditional occupation of mulberry growing, silkworm raising and silk weaving. Archeologically, AnGiang is the location where many relics belonging to the Oc Eo Civilisation have been excavated. These are some tourist attractions of AnGiang :

NUI SAM ( Sam Mountain) : As a good spot for sightseeing, the Sam mountain range is home to many relics such as Tay An ancient pagoda, Temple of Ba Chóa Xø ( Queen Xu), Chïa Hang ( Grotto pagoda) and LANG THOAI NGOC HAU ( Tomb of Thoai Ngoc Hau).

DEN THANH MAU ( Temple of Thanh Mau) is dedicated to a woman. The sanctuary of the temple is for the worship of a granite statue of Thanh Mau ( Mother of God). Organised between the 22 nd and the 27 th days of the fourth moon, this annual festival draws as many worshippers as that at the Huong Pagoda in northern Vietnam

LANG THOAI NGOC HAU ( Tomb of Thoai Ngoc Hau) is the place to commemorate Thoai Ngoc Hau who was merited with reclaiming the wilderness, at the basin of Mekong River to build villages and dig the canals Vinh Te and Thoai Ha for drainage.

N HA LUU NIEM TON DUC THANG ( President Ton Duc Thang Memorial House) : To arrive at this memorial house, visitors are taken on board a launch for a cruise along the Hau river. On the way back to Long Xuyen ( provincial capital of AnGiang), the launch will take visitors on a detour to see the beautiful lush green riverbanks.

C UU TRUNG DAI ( Nine-level Tower) is very close to a road that runs from Vietnam into Cambodia.
CAN THO City
TLocated in the middle of the Mekong River delta, CAN THO is a province which enjoys fertile soil conditions. Its provincial capital is CAN THO City. This city is considered as the capital of those provinces in the western region of South-Vietnam. Inhabited by more than 300,000 people, it is home to the southern Vietnam Institute of Agriculture and the CAN THO Institute. Set up in 1966, CAN THO Institute provides higher training in agriculture and medicine as well as teacher training. It also conducts research into soil conditions, rice strains, techniques of shrimp farming in the rackish water of Mekong River Delta. It has established research cooperative ties with some foreign colleges and universities. BEN NINH KIEU (NINH KIEU Wharf) is the city's major trading centre. Close to NINH KIEU Wharf is the CAN THO harbour which can accommodate ships of up to 5,000 tons. The CAN THO Market is a major market place in the western region of South-Vietnam. The riverside market is attractive for its floating restaurant located in the HAU River. Connoisseurs can enjoy the province's specialties while watching the bustling river route where hundreds of boats hurriedly pass by.

CA MAU
MINH HAI is the southernmost province of Vietnam. The province is inhabited by people of the Kinh (or VIET), the Hoa, the Khmer (KHO ME) and the CHAM. Minh Hai is famous for its submerged forests which account for one third of the total natural area. MINH HAI is also reputed for its birds. SAN CHIM BAC LIEU (Bac Lieu Bird Yard) is four kilometres east of BAC LIEU town. This garden of birds is home to many rare species. Upon entering the yard, visitors must be surprised to see many eggs lying on the ground, which look like small pieces of white gravel littered around the place. The trees in the garden, most of them leafless due to the customary pecking of the birds, serve as perching places. The birds seem to follow a strict hierarchical order, whereby the largest bird, the higher the branch reserved for it. The most interesting time to watch the birds is at sunset when they fly in from all directions to gather at the garden. VUON CAY BAC LIEU (Bac Lieu fruit tree garden) is five kilometres east of BAC LIEU town. The majority of trees are longan. The pulp of the local longan is as thick and juicy as that grown in Hung Yen province 30 kilometres east of Ha Noi. The architectural design of CHUA XIEM CAN (Xiem Can Pagoda) is unique with special traits found nowhere else in the whole of South-Vietnam. RUNG TRAM U MINH (U Minh Cajeput forests) cover an area of about 200,000 hectares. They are home to 50 species of timber trees, but the majority of the trees here are cajeput and rhizophora - known locally as §íc. A boat trip will take you along the various canals through U Minh forests. Here you can see the greatest submerged wilderness Vietnam has ever possessed.
