Astro Says

WHAT MORE'S TO BE SAID? EXCEPT MAYBE ...

Date: 26th July
Text by:Astro

Well, what more is there to say? I'm reminded of a lyric from a Nick Drake song: "If songs were lines in a conversation, the situation would be fine."

So, why not? As I finish my journey newly enraptured with Thai Karaoke, why not have a bit of a sing-song with me :-) ?

My Way (c)Whoever wrote it

And now, the end is near;
And so I face the final flight home
My friend, I'll say it clear,
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain.

I've had a trip that's full.
I've traveled South America's most dangerous highway;
But more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Regrets, I've had a few;
But then again, too few to mention.
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption.

I planned each charted course;
Each careful step along the byway,
But more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew.
But through it all, when there was doubt,
I ate it up and spit it out.
I faced it all and I stood tall;
And did it my way.

I've loved, I've laughed and cried.
I've had my fill; my share of losing.
And now, as tears subside,
I find it all so amusing.

To think I did all that;
And may I say - not in a shy way,
"No, oh no not me,
I did it my way".

For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught.
To say the things he truly feels;
And not the words of one who kneels.
The record shows, my arse it blows -
And did it my way!

And here, the song that kept us sane whilst rammed in a jeep for 17 hours on the way to north Bolivia on the most dangerous road in the Americas, and which again diverted attention from the same road when we headed south on it, with no brakes!

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY - (c)Queen

Is this the real life?
Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide
No escape from reality
Open your eyes
Look up to the skies and see
I'm just astroboy, I need no sympathy
Because I'm easy come*, easy go
A little high, little low
Anyway the wind blows, doesn't really matter to me, to me

*not THAT easy, girls! ;-)

Mama, just killed a man
Put a gun against his head
Pulled my trigger, now he's dead
Mama, life had just begun
But now I've gone and thrown it all away
Mama, ooo
Didn't mean to make you cry
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow
Carry on, carry on, as if nothing really matters

Too late, my time has come
Sends shivers down my spine
Body's aching all the time
Goodbye everybody - I've got to go
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth
Mama, ooo - (anyway the wind blows)
I don't want to work
I sometimes wish I could never stop travelling at all

I see a little silhouetto of a man
Scaramouch, scaramouch will you do the fandango
Thunderbolt and lightning - very very frightening me
Gallileo, Gallileo,
Gallileo, Gallileo,
Gallileo Figaro - magnifico
But I'm just a poor boy and nobody loves me
He's just astroboy from a poor family
Spare him his life from eating sausage tea
Easy come easy go - will you let me go
Bismillah! No - we will not let you go - let him go
Bismillah! We will not let you go - let him go
Bismillah! We will not let you go - let me go
Will not let you go - let me go (never)
Never let you go - let me go
Never let me go - ooo
No, no, no, no, no, no, no -
Oh mama mia, mama mia, mama mia let me go
Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me
for me
for me

So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye
So you think you can love me and leave me to die
Oh baby - can't do this to me baby
Just gotta get out - just gotta get right outta here

Ooh yeah, ooh yeah
Nothing really matters
Anyone can see
Nothing really matters - nothing really matters to me
Anyway the wind blows...

And the things I'll miss :

Butterflies - if you like butterflies, get to the Tropics, there's billions of 'em, and they're hyooj!
The rainforest. Please be careful where you get your furniture from! Don't chop all this stuff down :-(
Meeting new people every day - all those stories, points of view, adventures, thoughts ...
South East Asian food. Latin America - sorry, your food is RUBBISH!
Not having to work! Hahahahaaa!

And the things I won't miss:

The litter
The mangy dogs
Squat toilets

And some other stuff:

Thanks to Carl and Gordy for being top travel companions, for laughing at .. I mean, looking after me when the world was falling out of my bottom, for shouting me the odd beer or 10 when my budget wouldn't stretch, for looking worse than me in a dress (sh*t, is that a compliment or not?!), for coping admirably with my vegetarianism in the Americas. It might be some time before I see them again ... And I shan't miss you, so there! ;-p

Thanks to the Inland Revenue for a measly tax rebate, after trying to extract more tax out of me when I wasn't working. Bstards.

To everyone at home for all their lovely emails, and for tuning in to the website (why? WHY?)

To all the travellers we met on the way round the world, and who are still, for some reason, reading. Special thanks to
Antony in Mexico, for giving us a warm welcome, straight from the plane;
James and Moikey in Oz, for putting me up for a while;
Jo in Santiago for looking after our stuff whilst we adventured in Patagonia
and a bizarre thanks to Avram, for turning up unexpectedly in the unlikeliest of places, and adding a bit of spice to the adventure

Thanks to Friends Re-United, for getting me in touch with an old school friend in Oz.

Thanks to ME for being handsome, charming, gifted with languages, suave, sophisticated, and generally being such an all round bloody decent chap - I'm the best company I know, and I want to give myself a jolly good pat on the back.

Thanks to my ego - I think it kept me more amused on the website than you lot!

Thanks for tuning in, don't forget to turn off your sets. Once again, au revoir
