These are the floating reed islands in Lake Titicaca. They're pretty bizarre, mats of reeds floating in the lake, acting as permanent homes for the Indians that live there. For those interested in Sustainable Development - the islands are constructed from a renewable building material, that comes from and rots back into the lake at nature's own pace. They even come replete with solar powered TVs, local Indian guides and, er, highly authentic ethnic souvenirs whose profits go straight back into the local economy.
