Detroit is first and foremost a city built around the auto industry which includes companys such as Ford, Chevrolet, and GMC. The auto maker that truely calls detroit home is Ford. Ford has a broad history but the only thing that stands out from this company is its trucks and more importantly the FordGT40. This car was developed in very little time to compete in the world endurance racing circuit. After just 8 months of tweaking the car it took first place in the Daytona 2000k and today lives on as Ford motor companys take on a super car that can hold its own against any Lamborghini or Ferrari.
Detroit Michigan is home to four professional sports teams. It is also one of several cities in the United States to have teams from the four major North American sports. All but one of the area's teams compete within the city of Detroit. There are three active major sports venues within the city: 41,782-seat Comerica Park (home of the Detroit Tigers), 65,000 seat Ford Field (home of the football team Detroit Lions), and 20,066-seat Joe Louis Arena (home of the Detroit Red Wings). Detroit is known for its deep rooted hockey fans. Interest in the sport has given the city the name of "Hockeytown". In 2008, the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park reported 3.2 million visitors with a 98.6 percent attendance rate. The area's other major venue is The Palace of Auburn Hills, in the suburban community of Auburn Hills. This 22,076 seat arena is home to the Detroit Pistons of the NBA.
Detroit has also been a center of music in the united states producing current artist such as Eminem and Kid Rock. Also in the 1960-70s, popular rock bands performed regularly at venues such as the Grande Ballroom and the Eastown Theater. Local bands producing and performing music included artists like the MC5, The Stooges, Bob Seger, Amboy Dukes featuring Ted Nugent, Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels, Rare Earth, and Alice Cooper.
