The Pink Ball
So this is the end of the world. Somehow,
it is more pink than I expected.
I am standing here in the middle of the
street and watching the turmoil
around me. Men and women and children are
screaming. It is because of all the violence.
Some
are being killed, others are killing. There is a woman about
ten feet from me that is praying to a God I
have never heard of.
With a great shrug I walk away from her. I
have to find my wife. She must
be scared. I am amazed at the pink glow of
the street. The pavement feel
s warm
and I know it is from that damn glowing ball in the sky. The big pink one
that has everyone so terrified.
I walk into my house. It's a real nice
house. I have a very good job. I
have the perfect life here.
"Lucy, I'm home!" I yell arms
stretching out wanting my darling there
to
protect her from the evil pink thing. Lo and behold, my divine love emerges
from our kitchen.I catch my breath for she is
so stunning. She is a gorgeous
pink
tinted faerie princess.
"Peter! You are home!" she
screams as she burrows up to my chest, arms
wrapped around my waist. I can't hold her too
tight because of our happy little
faerie princess that is tucked in her tummy.
I do my best to console her with
my
presence.
"I am so scared! Daisy has not come
home from school yet! She is out
there!"
she sobs at me through thick, buttery tears.
In my mind I can almost see myself
gathering up my superhero cape over
my shoulder as I say to my darling Lucy
"I will find her."
With one last kiss for her hero, Lucy runs
off to the kitchen to console
Grey, our three year old son. I am filled
with fear and anxiety as I leave the
house
and my two gems behind to search for my Daisy Love.
A man has somehow attached himself with
wire to my car shouting abuot
how he tried to tell everyone that this would
happen. Okay, so my car is not
an option.I walk, I walk briskly all for my
little dimple cheeked Daisy. For
her, I
gallantly run past wierdos with guns and bigger wierdos with bibles.
Everything is pink. I see murders and
suicides too gruesome to really
affect
me. Some man is claiming that a comet, is how the dinosaurs became extinct
so why
not us? I smile wondering if the dinosaurs all killed themselves before
the
comet hit.
"Daisy!" I shout, not really
expecting anything. You see, heros always
have to
endure pain and terror before they save the damsel in distress. But, I
do hear my little flower answer my call.
"Daddy!" screams Daisy from the
curb where she is laying. I cross the
street
in a hurry. As I do I see the shredded remains of the bus that she was
riding
on. It appears to have been broken and shot into. I am so happy that
she is
alive. But, she is injured. Glass shards protrude from her cute little
legs that are exposed by the school uniforms
required by the perverse school board.
She is crying so hard that her face is
nearly the same deep pink as the
blood that seeps down her legs. She reaches
out for me and I lift her up by her
armpits to her feet. The bottoms of her feet
are glassless. Thank God.
"My legs hurt so bad." she says
in such a cute, endearing voice that I
feel my
heart pull at my chest.
"Walk with me back to your mommy dear
Daisy and it won't hurt anymore."
I lie. Even through the pain, she looks
doubtful. "And I will give you ice cream."
"I don't want ice cream."she
cries. I know that she must be very ill
indeed.
So, I do the only humane thing. I carry her by her arms back home.
She is
wriggling and screaming and I think of how big the pink ball in the
sky is
getting.
I drag her into the house with much
fumbling for my keys. As we step
into the house, I throw the loony my car key.
He becomes deliciously giddy
and
prepares to drive to a "safer" planet.
As we come in, Lucy and Grey meet
us halfway in the den. Lucy panics
when
she sees Daisy's legs and scurries away to get the first aid kit. I hug
my
terrified salty eyed Grey. I flash him my Superman grin.
Lucy bandages up daisy's legs. The four of
us eat ice cream in the
den and
play Life. I am laughing at Daisy's frustration about having to put
in a
blue "boy" peg next to her so that she can be married.
"Well, if you hadn't lost all the
pink pegs, you could have a girl!"
chides
Lucy.Everything looks pink to me though. Solving her problem with a
finesse
that only my daughter has, Daisy adds a blue peg and with a triumphant
smile says "My wife is wearing a blue
shirt!"
We all giggle and hug and play. I am happy
and I know that my family
loves
me. The world is ending and I can not be happier. We hear loud booms and
crashes outside. I pull Daisy and Grey into
my lap.
I tell them all what I feel inside for
them. Lucy kisses me. The Earth
shakes.
It is almost over, but my family isn't afraid anymore.
"Why is it so pink?" I ask.
"Silly Dad! You are wearing pink
sunglasses!" Daisy grabs my head
and
removes the glasses that i never knew were there.
I awake with a start. I am startled and
look around. I see Daisy and
Grey
killing each other in Mortal Kombat. I smile. They are alive. It was a d
ream. I
look towards the kitchen and see Lucy bending over the oven. I wolf
whistle.
She looks at me with a wink and I realize that I am going to be happy
the rest of my life. The world is no longer
pink.
