It was a cold, damp night in Harmony. The weather must have kept everyone inside their houses for the town was almost deserted. On a nearly baron road, a single car drove by. "Sheridan, you really didn't need to give me a ride home. I've walked home from the center plenty of times by myself in weather like this. You really don't need to go out of your way." A voice inside the car said. "That's nonsense Luis" the other voice stated. "It's not that much out of they way, plus, after crashing your trip to New Mexico, it's the least I can do". "But, Sheridan, this isn't necessary!" Luis cut in. "Luis! You should have learned by now! Once I get something in my mind, I don't give in." Sheridan replied. "Yeah, that's for sure. Stubbornness must be a Crane family trait." Luis shot back, without thinking. "What's that supposed to mean Officer Lopez-Fitzgerald?!" Sheridan shot back. "No! Never mind, I don't want to discuss this with you yet again! And for the last time, I don't want to fight" After 5 minutes of silence between the two Luis, still sulking in guilt, broke the silence. "Sheridan?" Luis said. "What?" Sheridan answered. Luis thought a while ... could he bring himself to apologize to Sheridan ... a Crane ... again. "Never mind" he eventually said. "What is it Luis?" Sheridan asked again. "I ... I just ... I just wanted to say sorry" Luis stammered. "Sorry? Sorry for what?" Sheridan asked. "Just for what I said before. I wasn't thinking and I didn't mean to offend you." Luis replied. "Oh, you mean about us Cranes being stubborn?" Sheridan asked. "You were right, we are ... I'll admit it" "No Sheridan, you're not stubborn. You're just determined, that's all" Luis said as Sheridan's car pulled up to the Lopez-Fitzgerald household. "Well, it's been a fun and ... interesting trip" Sheridan said first. "Yeah, it has Sheridan." Luis replied. "Well, I guess I should get inside. I'll see you tomorrow bright and early at the Youth Center." "Okay ... um ... speaking of Youth Center, what do you have planned for me to do tomorrow?" Sheridan asked, looking for conversation. Luis was confused, "I don't know, what does it matter? It's late" "Yeah, you're right." Sheridan replied, "I'll see you tomorrow then?" Sheridan continued trying to hide the hopefulness in her voice. "Sure thing. C'ya!" Luis said as he hopped out of her car and walked to his house. Sheridan waited a minute then put her car into 'reverse' and started to back out of the driveway. She searched for a reason not to leave. She panicky looked around the car. There it was! She slammed her car into 'park', grabbed the item and ran after Luis. "Luis! Hey! Luis! Wait!" Sheridan screamed, running up to him. "Sheridan? What is it? You're gonna wake the whole neighborhood!" Luis answered, even more confused. "I'm sorry, but is this your ... "Sheridan reached into her jacket pocket. " ... is this your ... " Sheridan glanced at the item " ... quarter?!" "Sheridan?! You came running after me for a quarter?" Luis asked. "Well, I thought you might need it for ... something" Sheridan said searching for a reason. "Sheridan, it's a quarter! I think you need to go home and get some sleep." Luis said. "Drive carefully and I'll see you tomorrow." Sheridan looked down at the quarter closer. "But, Luis, it's a Georgia-Quarter" "Okay Sheridan, you're really starting to scare me now. Are you sure you'll be okay to drive home?" Luis said starting to get worried. Sheridan thought to herself "If it means that I'd be spending another night with you, no ... I don't think I can drive home." She thought better of the idea and said "Yeah, I'll be fine. I guess I'm just tired. Well, night." Sheridan said as she walked back to her car. "Wait Sheridan. Give me a call when you get home. Just so I know you made it all right." Luis replied. He didn't want the night to end either ... but it was late and they had to be at the Youth Center early the next morning. "Okay." Sheridan replied. She got in her car and drove off. Luis was left standing the driveway with a lost look on his face. "Wonder what that was about." Luis said to himself out load. "Luis? Luis, is that you?" a voice came from the house. Luis turned around to see who it was. "Mamma! What are you still doing up?" Luis said. "I haven't slept well since you left, Luis. Was that Ms. Crane here just now?" Pilar asked. "Yes mamma it was." Luis said. "Well ... it's good to see you two are getting along now. Now, come inside before you catch a cold" Pilar replied. Luis started to blush "Yes momma, we had a fun time in New Mexico, and we didn't even kill each other". "Luis, I'd love to hear about your New Mexico adventure, but can it wait until tomorrow. It's getting very late". Pilar answered. "Yes momma sure." Luis said as they both walked into the house. It was thirty minutes later and Sheridan had still not called. Luis was starting to get worried. "Momma?" Luis said knocking on her bedroom door. "What is it Luis?" Pilar asked opening the door and seeing her distraught son. "Luis? What's wrong?" "It's nothing momma. Or I hope it's nothing. I have to run out for a bit, I'll try to be back soon." Luis said. "Luis ... where are you going at this hour?" Pilar called after him as he ran out the door. "It's a long story momma, I'll tell you later" Luis said. Luis arrived outside of Sheridan's cottage. Her car was sitting in the driveway. "She got home okay." Luis said with relief in her voice, but then sound disappointed. "But I thought she was going to call me ..." Screams from Sheridan's cottage broke the silence of the air outside. Luis got worried. He ran up to her door. "Sheridan? Sheridan, you okay?" Luis said through the door. There was no answer. Luis tried to open the door and found that it was unlocked. Luis opened the door slowly. "Sheridan? Where are you Sheridan?" Luis called out again. "Help me! I'm drowning! Somebody help me! I didn't mean to do it! I didn't mean to do it! I'm sorry!" Sheridan screamed from her couch. Luis ran over to her to find her dreaming again. "It must be that dream again and now she's added her nearly drowning too" Luis thought. "Sheridan ... wake up!" Luis called. "It's you, you're my mystery man! My one true love. The man that will love me for me and not care about what I might have done" Sheridan said out of the blue. "What?" Luis asked. He turned and looked at Sheridan, but she was still asleep and apparently dreaming. "Sheridan, you're dreaming again ... come on and wake up" Luis shook her gently. Sheridan slowly opened her eyes. "Luis! What are you doing in my cottage?" She asked. She looked at him and the look on his face. "Let me guess ... I was dreaming again? But that doesn't explain why you are here." Sheridan said still a little groggy. "I waited for you to call after you got home. I waited for a half hour or so and I didn't hear from you. So ... I came over to check on you. I guess I was ... I was worried okay!" Luis said really fast. "And then I heard you scream and when I came in, you were screaming in you sleep again. And you said something about that mystery man." Luis continued. Sheridan thought back to what she was dreaming. She dreamt that she was drowning in the creek in New Mexico again. Then she flashed back to the incident of 'that night', which she thought she had put behind her. Then, her mystery man came and pulled her from the murky water and saved her life yet again. He knew what she may have done 'that night', but he didn't care ... he loved her for what she was. Then she remembered she saw the mystery man's face this time. But she couldn't remember what he looked like. "I was dreaming about almost drowning in new Mexico again, Luis. I don't know why. Then my mystery man came and rescued me." Sheridan finally said. "Yeah, you thought I was that mystery man again." Luis said. "That's ridiculous, how could you be my mystery man." Sheridan said. Although that was what she hoped. "Sheridan, I don't know. But now since I know you're all right, I guess I should get going. I told momma I wouldn't be long." Luis looked and Sheridan and then got off the couch, where he was sitting next to her, and started to walk out the door. "Luis, wait." Sheridan started. Do you think you could ... um ... spend the night?" Sheridan stammered out. "Sheridan? Why?" Luis said confusedly. "It's just that ... after dreaming of drowning again, I'm scared and I don't want to be here alone." Sheridan said. "Sheridan, why are you scared?" Luis asked. "I'm not sure ... but I just feel safer if you're here" Sheridan said. "Well ... I would if I could, but momma's waiting for me and I really should get home". Luis wanted to leave her cottage as soon as he could. He was afraid what would happen if he spent more time there with Sheridan. A person whom he grew very close to during their trip. She was there for him when he needed her and visa versa. Had the New Mexico trip put an end to the good ole Crane/Lopez-Fitzgerald feud? Sheridan looked upset. "Well ... if you need to, go ahead, I'll see you tomorrow morning, bright and early." She then sat back down on her couch. Luis hated to see Sheridan upset. But he had to wonder why all this emotional distress was being caused by him. "Wait, you have a phone, right?" Luis said ... realizing how much he sounded like a moron, corrected himself "Wait, can I use your phone?" He said. "Yeah, it's in the kitchen." Sheridan said and pointed to the door. "Thanks ... I'll be right back". Luis slipped through the door and dialed Pilar. "Momma? It's Luis. Listen, I won't be back home tonight. Something came up. I'll explain it later. I just didn't want you to worry about me. I'm safe and I'll see you tomorrow. Night momma" could be heard from Luis' side of the conversation. Luis came back out from the kitchen to the living room. He sat down on the couch next to Sheridan. "What was that about?" Sheridan asked. "Nothing ... I just called momma and told her that something came up and that I'd see her tomorrow." Luis responded. "So? You will stay then?" Sheridan asked trying to hide the happiness in her voice. "Sure ... why not ... I haven't been to a sleep over since high school." Luis joked. "Thank you Luis! You have no idea how much I appreciate this." Sheridan said as she reached over and gave Luis a hug. Then she jumped back realizing what she had done "I'm sorry." Um ... shall I make up the couch for you?" Sheridan continued. "But where would you sleep, Sheridan?" Luis replied. "I do have a bedroom Luis. I just fell asleep out here, I guess I was really tired" Sheridan said as she got up and got a blanket and an extra pillow for Luis. "Here you go." She said. "And thanks again." Sheridan went in her bedroom and shut the door. It didn't take either of them long to fall asleep. Both dreaming. In Luis' dream he was dreaming about their trip to New Mexico. The time the waiter called them a cute couple, the time the motel manager thought they were a couple, the adjoining door, the comb, Sheridan's screaming, their accident, when they walked in the rain, when Sheridan got swept away, when he rescued Sheridan, when Sheridan kissed him, when the fire went out, when Luis had to share his body heat, when she asked him to make love to her, when Sheridan came to and realized what had happened, when he let his father go to save Sheridan, when they ran into Julian, when he realized he was wrong about what he thought about Sheridan all along. His dreams were happy dreams. Sheridan's dream was so happy though. She was dreaming of 'that night'. Then the mystery man came back and told her he understood and that he loved her no matter what. His face was shown in the dream this time also. Sheridan still couldn't quite make it out. Then she dreamt about the flood and her mystery man saving her again. And then, she dreamt that she was at Martin's cabin in New Mexico. When she woke up from her feverish unconsciousness she was laying next to her mystery man. Sheridan shot up in her bed! "Oh my god!" She screamed. Then she realized she wasn't alone in her house. She had asked Luis to spend the night! She walked over to her door and opened it. She peaked out at Luis ... he was still sound a sleep with a big grin on his face. "Wonder what he could be dreaming about?" She thought. Sheridan returned to her bedroom only to be hit with the full impact of what her dream had meant. Luis was her mystery man! Luis woke up at 6 o'clock the next morning. He walked in to Sheridan's kitchen to make coffee. To his surprise, Sheridan was sitting at the table starring into space and drinking a cup of coffee. "Sheridan? Hello? You there?" Luis called. "Huh? what? Oh ... hey Luis. How did you sleep?" Sheridan said coming back for la-la-land. "I slept okay. Best I have since finding out the truth about my father." Luis said. "Knowing that the only reason he moved to New Mexico was because he learned something he wasn't supposed to and it was the only way he could save his life. Really hurt at first. I mean, if he would have told the family what had happened. That he had walked in on the murdering of an employee of Crane Industries maybe they could have helped. He just wanted to save himself. But after you think about it, I guess it's the best thing to do." Luis said. "But ... I thought I heard you scream one time early this morning, Sheridan? What happened?" Sheridan thought back to the dream that made her realize who her mystery man was. "Oh ... I was just dreaming about my mystery man again. I found out who he was this time" Sheridan said. "Oh really?" Luis asked. "Who was he?" He was hoping that she'd say his name. He was really starting to fall for her and had no clue what to do. "Nobody you know." Sheridan said. She couldn't let him know. He'd hate her forever if he found out that she had fallen for him. "Oh." Luis said with disappointment in his voice. "What's wrong Luis? You looked disappointed?" Sheridan said. Then she realized ... maybe he wanted her to say it was him. "Oh ... nothing." Luis said. "Well ... I ... we ... better get to the Youth Center." Luis said. "Yeah, I guess you're right." Sheridan said. Sheridan and Luis walked into the Youth Center together chatting and laughing. Then they ran into Hank. "Well ... there you two are! I was starting to wonder if you two ran off and eloped or something." Hank joked. Luis and Sheridan both looked uncomfortable at that comment. "What's with this? Did New Mexico take away your sense of humor?" Hank joked again. Neither of their expressions change. "Okay ... tough room this morning I see." Hank said. Then focused his attention on Sheridan "So, what do you say I treat you to a welcome back dinner tonight?" Hank asked. Luis got an expression of jealousy on his face. But managed to hide it. "I'd love to Hank, but after being away, I have some other matters to turn to. Maybe some other time." Sheridan said as politely as she could. A look of relief came over Luis' face. "Oh ... okay then. Well ... I have some stuff to do. I'll see you two later." Hank said as he walked out. "So, I guess Hank wasn't your mystery man then, huh, Sheridan?" Luis asked. "Yeah, I guess you could say he was one of the last people on my mind." Sheridan said. "Well ... I have some stuff I have to do in the office." Luis said. "Okay ... I'm going to run next door to Beth's coffee shop place and get a bagel, do you want anything?" Sheridan asked. "No thanks." Luis said. "Okay then." Sheridan said as she walked out the door. Luis thought to himself after she left. "What I wouldn't give to be the mystery man that she's dreaming about. I can't believe I've fallen for her! A Crane!" He walked into the office and sat down to do the paper work that he had to do. Ten minutes later Luis realized that Sheridan hadn't come back yet. "I hope nothing's happened." He thought. Just then he heard the door shut. "Now get me your purse" and unidentified voice said. "Okay ... okay ... it's in the office let me get it." Sheridan said. Luis noticed that he voice was shaky. Luis opened the desk drawer and pulled out his gun. He walked over to the door and opened it slowly. Before he knew it he was face to face with the mugger ... again. "Drop the gun." Luis ordered the mugger. "Don't take another step toward me or she's a goner." the mugger said holding his gun to Sheridan's head. "Okay ... I'm not gonna move. But please, just put the gun down." Luis tried to persuade the mugger. "No way. Not until she gets me her purse and you two let me get a clean get away." The mugger stated. "Luis ... just let me get my purse and give it to him! That's all he wants." Sheridan said. "That's right." Said the mugger. "That's all I want." He said as he pushed Sheridan into the office. As soon as the mugger's back was turned to Luis, he pulled the trigger on his gun. Luis had never shot anyone before, but needed to save Sheridan and wasn't letting the mugger get away this time. Sheridan screamed at the sound of the gun shot. The mugger let her go as soon as he was hit. Sheridan ran and pushed the silent alarm button. Luis' bullet only hit the mugger in the arm. He turned around and retaliated with a shot at Luis. It hit Luis in the left leg. Luis fell to the ground. "Oh my God!" Sheridan screamed as she ran toward Luis. "Get back Sheridan!" Luis said as he pulled the trigger on his gun once more. This time the mugger was hit in the chest. "Luis! Are you okay?" Sheridan asked, as the ambulance and cop cars pulled up. "I'm fine." Luis told her and they loaded him into the ambulance. "Watch over the Youth Center for me while I'm at the emergency room, okay?" Luis said as they closed the doors to the ambulance. Soon after the chaos was cleared up, Hank arrived back at the Youth Center. "Where's Luis at, Sheridan?" Hank asked upon his return. "He's in the hospital. It's a long story. Listen, can you watch over the Center while I go and check on him please?" Sheridan pleaded. "Yeah, okay." Hank replied. "Thanks." Sheridan said as she grabbed her stuff and ran out the door. Once at the hospital Sheridan found out what room Luis was in. She went in and talked to him. "Sheridan? What are you doing here? I thought I told you to stay and look after the Youth Center?" Luis asked. "You did. But Hank came back. I asked him to stay. I needed to come find out how you were ... and I really needed to talk to you." Sheridan said. "What is it that's SO important Sheridan?" Luis asked. "Well, you saved my life again, Luis. And I just wanted to thank you." Sheridan said. "Well, your welcome." Luis responded. "Wait!" Sheridan said. "I didn't thank you yet?" "You didn't?" Luis asked. "No ... I didn't." Sheridan replied as she leaned forward and kissed him. "Now, I'm thanking you." Luis kissed her back. "And now I'm thanking you for thanking me." He said but he couldn't help laughing at his own comment. Luis and Sheridan gazed into each other's eyes and then kissed each other, again, but more passionately. A passion that neither of them had ever felt before. Sheridan was the first to pull away. "I ... um ... I think I'm going to go tell everyone that you're all right." Sheridan said a little flustered. "Okay." Luis said. "I'll see you later." A few hours later Sheridan returned. Luis was lying in his bed a sleep. Sheridan couldn't help but think how cute he looked. She walked over to him and sat down beside him. Even though he was asleep, she still spoke to him. "You saved my life numerous times. You are my mystery man, Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald." She said and she grabbed a hold of his hand. Luis tightened his grip on her hand and replied "I was hoping I was, Sheridan Crane. Ever since that time in New Mexico when you first told me about him. I wanted it to be me." Sheridan and he gazed into each other eyes again. They kissed passionately, again. "I wanted it to be you too, Luis" Sheridan managed to say between kisses.

The End.
