The
In Laws (NBC,
Tuesday 8pm. Premieres September 24th)
What It's
About: This
is what NBC says: "Newlywed Matt (Comedian Elon Gold, The Dana Carvey
Show),
with the support of his wife Alex (Bonnie Somerville, Friends), has
quit
his job to go to culinary school. But in order to make ends meet in the
meantime, they've grudgingly moved in with Alex's parents, Victor
(Dennis
Farina, Snatch) and Marlene (Jean Smart, Frasier). Since Marlene is
caught
up in her real estate job and Alex is busy working double shifts,
Victor
and Matt have plenty of "alone" time. Unfortunately, Matt is terrified
of Victor and Victor isn't thrilled to have an "outsider" on his turf.
Luckily, Matt and Victor have one thing in common that just might make
this awkward situation work: their love for Alex." Like "Hidden Hills"
at 9:30pm, it's produced by NBC studios, which explains why it got on
the
air.
Who's Behind
It: Jean
Smart has just about turned everythign she touches into gold in the
last
few seasons. Last year, she got supporting emmys nods for both
"Frasier"
and "The District." Dannis Farina has been around forever as well,
though
nowhere, really.
Unfair Grade
Even Before Watching:
C-
Premiere
Prediction: 9.2mil
The Reason: NBC
has has so much trouble filling the Tuesday at 8om hole that it's
resorted
to shows like "Emeril" and "Imagine That." Every one has failed. This
will
be no exception.
Just
Shoot Me
(NBC,
Tuesday 8:30pm. Premieres October 1st)
What's
Happening: Rena
Sofer comes on board. Was she one of the "Melrose" bitches? Other than
that, who cares?
Where It's
Been: Up
and down almost every season its been on the air, it found stability
during
the last two seasons on Thursday night. Unfortunately, that was a
sliding
stability, and now it's here, again.
Last Season's
High: 19.0mil
(February 7, 2002)
Premiere
Prediction: 10.4mil
The Reason: Don't
let last season's high fool you- "Will & Grace" before it drew a
series
high 25.4mil viewers. Behind "The In Laws," numbers will likely only
decrease
into oblivion. Last season calling...
Frasier
(NBC,
Tuesday 9pm. Premieres September 24th)
What's
Happening: To
start with, Daphne and Niles get married in the season premiere, which
should boost ratings for about one week. Other than that, expect more
dates
for Frasier. I'm told Frasier and Roz hooked up at the end of last
season.
Yuck. Why not Frasier and Jean Smart's hilarious recurring character?
Right,
she's got her own show now.
Where It's
Been:
A hit since the beginning, its aired on Tuesday and Thursdays. all to
high
ratings. But lately those ratings have been slipping, and fans are
becoming
disgruntled with the show.
Last Season's
High: 19.3mil
(November 13, 2001)
Premiere
Prediction: 17.3mil
The Reason: "Frasier,"
sadly enough, is becoming one of those shows that opens big and closes
big, but dips in between. Nevertheless, the penultimate season of this
show will still land in the top 20.
Hidden
Hills
(NBC,
Tuesday 9:30pm. Premieres October 1st)
What It's
About: This
is what NBC says "It's not your normal tree-lined American
neighborhood.
Or maybe it is. Hidden Hills follows the eye-opening adventures of
suburban
couples Doug & Janine and Zack & Sarah. This decidedly
different
relationship comedy explores the wild, sexy and funny side of the
'burbs
— where apparently everyone has a lot more to reveal than what first
meets
the eye. It's the kind of place where the fantasies of one husband (OK,
it's Doug) take on a delirious life of their own. At least he doesn't
have
an exotic past that's wound up on the Internet (unlike one of their
neighbors).
Seems everybody has secrets to hide in Hidden Hills, even if everybody
else on the block seems to know what those secrets are!" Smells like a
real winner to me. You know it's bad when the network uses an
exclamation
point at the end of their own description.
Who's Behind
It: The
stars are TV's equivalent of small potatoes. Paula Marshall was in the
first season of "Spin City," as well as the first and only season od
"Cupid."
Dondre T. Whitfield was a player on ABC's "Ally My Children" for years.
It's produced by NBC Studios, which explains why it actually got on the
air.
Unfair Grade
Even Before Watching:
D
Premiere
Prediction: 13.4mil
The Reason: Will
open solidly behind "Frasier," but will fall fast. Advance buzz on this
show is very bad, and it will likely die an appropriate quick death,
"Hidden"
from viewers eyes.
