“Ethan Crane is my father’s son by Ivy Crane.” Kay explained. “Turns out they dated before my parents met. They were pretty serious too, but her family got in the way. She was forced to call it off and marry Julian. A couple days before the wedding she found out she was pregnant. Ivy was so scared of what they would do to her baby that she passed him off as Julian’s.” “Wow.” Theresa was still in shock. “Guess I win the bad day contest.” Kay said. “Guess so.” “So what do I win Fitz?” Theresa smiled as the used of her old nick name. They both stood up and brushed the sand off. “How about dinner at my house? I know for a fact Miguel is taking Charity out tonight. We could give each other manicures and watch ‘Boys on the Side’.” “You’re on.” ~ The storm finally broke two days later as Sam Bennett moved out of his house and into a small apartment across town. Sam was looking forward to getting to know his son, but wished that he were able to do it while living at home. Once Sam had loaded up the last of his luggage he turned to go back in the house and say good-bye, but Grace had already closed and locked the door. A week later Ethan moved in with him. ~ Kay avoided being at home as much as possible. In six weeks she would leave for college in sunny California, and Theresa would head off to New York. Whitney and Simone had gotten jobs at a summer camp and wouldn’t return until school started at Harmony University in September. In the mean time Kay spent every available moment laughing with Theresa, or getting to know Ethan. A bead of sweat rolled down the side of Kay’s face as she smiled broadly at her friends Chuck and Mike. She and Theresa were beating them soundly at a game volleyball. “Give up?” Kay challenged. “Never!” They both roared back. Kay shook her head and smiled at them. “What do you say we go easy on them Kay?” Theresa teased. “I mean, it’s only fair considering they offered us a five point lead.” “Well I could try serving with my eyes closed, or how about if I-“ “Wipe that grin off your face Bennett and serve already.” Mike shot at her with a lopsided grin on his face. “You asked for it.” Kay warned with a smile. “14 – 7” Kay called as she tossed the ball in the air. Moments later Theresa slammed the ball down, scoring the winning point. “Anyone up for a swim?” Kay asked sweetly. “Sounds good to me.” Theresa answered as she pulled her shirt off revealing her electric blue bikini. “Shall we make the boys take our sweaty things to our towels?” “I think we shall.” Kay tossed her own shirt and shorts at Mike. Mike just shook his head and walked over to the towels with her cloths. Not only did she play a good game, she looked great in her deep green two piece. “You know Mike, I think these girls need a lesson in humility.” Chuck said interrupting Mike’s thoughts. “And just how shall we go about that Chuck.” Mike said in mock seriousness. “Uh-oh.” Theresa said as she started to back away. “Run!” Kay called out as she took off. They both squealed with laughter as Chuck and Mike caught up to them and dropped them into the cold water. Time flew by as the four friends enjoyed one of the few remaining days of summer. Neither girl was over her broken heart, but each was determined to enjoy themselves that day. ~ Kay hated leaving the beach that day but had to hurry if she was going to make it to dinner on time. Ethan was cooking her a good-bye dinner and she didn’t want to disappoint him. They had grown very close in a short period of time and she knew it would be hard to say good-bye tonight. Kay stared at her closet that was now half-filled with clothes borrowed from Theresa. She had two more days before she left for school. Kay smiled at the thought of her old friend. She and Theresa were definitely going to have to sort through their clothes tomorrow. Kay switched on the radio as ‘Everything You Want’ by Vertical Horizon came on. Singing along she finally selected a simple black dress that came down to just above her knees. Dancing as she went into the bathroom, Kay began putting on her make-up. …But under skinned knees and the skid marks Past the places where your used to learn You howl and listen Listen and wait for the Echoes of angels who won’t return He’s everything you want He’s everything you need He’s everything inside of you That you wish you could be He says all the right things At exactly the right time But he means nothing to you And you don’t know why… Kay began to think of Mike and the day they had spent together. She wondered what would have happened if her heart wasn’t still broken. Jessica came into the bathroom as Kay was pulling large curlers out of her hair. “I can’t believe your going over there.” Jessica exclaimed. “He’s your brother too Jessica. Besides, Dad deserves a chance to say good-bye before I go.” You’re waiting for someone To put you together You’re waiting for someone to push you away There’s always another wound to discover There’s always something more you wish he’d say He’s everything you want He’s everything you need He’s everything inside of you That you wish you could be He says all the right things At exactly the right time But he means nothing to you And you don’t know why… “But mom-“ “Is cooking dinner tomorrow night and Theresa, Whitney, Simone and I are going out the next night.” “That’s not the point.” “I’m not going to cut my dad and brother out of my life just because mom did.” Kay pushed passed her sister into their room. She sat down on her bed to put her shoes and sighed as she realized Jessica wasn’t finished. …Out of the island Into the highway Past the places where you might have turned You never did notice But you still hide away The anger of angels who won’t return “Dad lied to her.” “About what? About having another son? He didn’t know about Ethan. About dating Ivy years before they met? What does it matter who he dated? For all we know mom was married before she met dad. She could have other kids that she doesn’t know about.” He’s everything you want He’s everything you need He’s everything inside of you That you wish you could be He says all the right things At exactly the right time But he means nothing to you And you don’t know why… “But-“ “No buts Jessica. Mom’s not being fair, and neither are you. You haven’t even talked to dad on the phone since he moved out. He misses you.” Kay ran her fingers through the waves in her long dark hair. “It may not be logical but she’s still hurting.” “I know, but we have a great brother and you won’t even give him a chance. He had no control over what happened. All he wants is to get to know his family.” Kay gave herself one last look in the mirror before turning to go. “You could come tonight.” “Mom, Charity and I planned a movie night tonight.” Kay simple shook her head and headed downstairs. She had to call Ethan to tell him she was ready to be picked up. After doing so she headed outside to wait for him. Miguel and Charity reached the front door just as Kay opened it. I am everything you want I am everything you need I am everything inside of you That you wish you could be I say all the right things At exactly the right time But I mean nothing to you And I don’t know why… Quickly brushing past them Kay prayed Ethan would hurry. It had been this way all summer. The three of them were constantly running into each other and quickly parting before anything was said. Kay stood at the end of the driveway lost in her memories of Miguel. The way he once could read her thoughts, the way he once finished her sentences, and especially how once they had meant so much to each other. She still didn’t understand why his feelings hadn’t grown beyond friendship, and mostly why he had stopped caring about her at all. “Kay?” At the sound of Miguel’s voice Kay tensed up. She turned and faced him. For a moment they stood there looking at each other. “You look great Kay.” “Thanks.” “Where you going?” “Ethan is making dinner for me and my dad. Sort of a bon voyage party for three.” “When do you leave?” “What do you care Miguel?” The pain in Kay’s chest had her fighting back tears. She turned to look down the street, hoping to see Ethan’s car. Miguel couldn’t take his eyes off her. There was still so much to say and he was beginning to realize how much he missed her friendship. “Just wondering.” Was all he could think to say. “I have two more days” “Why so far away?” Miguel wondered if her eyes had always been so deep. “I wanted a change. To see what it was like to go a winter without snow.” Kay caught sight of her brothers car out of the corner of her eye. She stood there for another brief moment drinking in the sight of Miguel. As she turned to open the car door, Miguel reached out and caught her hand. “I’ll miss you.” He told her. Kay pulled her hand away without turning around. “Why Miguel, when you haven’t missed our friendship at all this past year?” Kay got in the car and drove away. Miguel simple stood there watching the taillights disappear into the night, with an ache in his heart he was afraid to explain.
