Bloodshed and a bombshell at the Salem Dance
Soap Opera Weekly - July 18, 2000 (Cover Story)

The Last Blast Dance The fun, anticipation and excitement of the Last Blast Dance culminate in chaos this week on Days of Our Lives. Chloe is targeted for an evil prank, Philip unwittingly falls victim to it and Mimi's humiliating secret is finally revealed.

Chloe, who has undergone a dramatic transformation for the bash and is basking in the glory of being popular for the first time in her life, is actually daring to enjoy the dance. "She overwhelmed by all the attention she's getting," Nadia Bjorlin (Chloe) says, not only from all the guys who have suddenly expressed interest in her but, specifically, from her escort, Philip. "All of a sudden he's going, 'Hey, this is my date.'"

Jay Kennth Johnson (Philip) notes that his character experiences a twinge of jealousy. "Guys are coming up and asking Chloe to dance. Philip's like, 'Get the hell away.' I think Philip likes Chloe, although he doesn't know it. He's intrigued by her mysteriousness."

Shawn, who has always appreciated the real Chloe, is truly thrilled about his friend's metamorphosis, which doesn't go unnoticed by Belle. "I don't think Belle is jealous until Shawn starts paying a little more attention to Chloe, and Belle's kind of standing in the background," Kirsten Storms (Belle) says.

Chloe, however, clearly only has eyes for the attentive Philip. "She's impressed by all the nice little things he's been doing - asking her to the dance, bringing her flowers, renting a limo. She doesn't know he only did all this because he had to," Bjorlin says, referring to the bet Philip lost with Shawn that forced him to escort Chloe to the dance.

Later, Chloe and Philip share a slow dance, and their attraction for each other surfaces. "Chloe totally starts melting for him," Bjorlin says. "They kind of connect." Johnson says, adding that Chloe and Philip almost kiss. "But the music gets faster all of a sudden, and it kind of breaks the mood."

Belle and Shawn also dance, but much to her chagrin, romance is the furthest thing from his mind. He's far more concerned with the nasty plan Jason and Jan have up their sleeves. "Shawn overheard them talking about a couple of things: their major plan, the main event, and how they're going to screw Chloe over," Jason Cook (Shawn) says. "Although they keep telling Shawn they're not going to do anything. Shawn can see right through their b.s. He warns them that if they do anything to Chloe, they're going to have to answer to him."

Needless to say, Shawn's preoccupation with the plan "is distracting him from the whole dance," Cook says. "Shawn's focusing more on that and everyone else's well-being than having fun."

That doesn't sit well with Belle. "She thinks Jan and Jason are just being stupid as usual. She keeps telling Shawn to enjoy himself, that he's supposed to be having fun," Storms says. Belle's please fall on deaf ears, "which kind of upsets her. Shawn's not paying as much attention to Belle as she would have liked, because he's so busy trying to find out when Jan and Jason are planning."

Later, Mimi assures Belle and Shawn that they're a shoo-in for the dance king and queen, but neither of them is very interested. "That just wouldn't faze Shawn. He's not that type of guy," Cook says. Storms concurs: "We're just at the dance celebrating the end of the school year together. We're supposed to be having a good time with friends. That's it."

Soon, the tally is read, and to everyone's surprise Philip and Chloe are announced king and queen. As the couple approach the stage to receive their crowns, a suspicious Shawn can't help but sense that something is amiss.

"Shawn's happy for Chloe and Philip for, like, a minute, then he looks around and see Jan and Jason sneak off," Cook says. When Shawn sees Jan walk by and glance up at the ceiling, he notices a bucket hanging precariously overhead. Shawn turns his attention back to Jason and sees him pull a rope attached to the bucket. As Chloe and Philip embrace, Shawn figures out exactly what's going on. "That's when he tries to save the day," Cook says. "Shawn runs up to the stage and knocks Chloe out of the way."

Belle and Shawn stick by ChloeAs the bucket - filled with blood - lands on Philip instead, a shocked Chloe watches from the sidelines and realizes the horrific prank was meant for her. "Chloe's whole little dream night is crushed. Ruined," Bjorlin says.

Philip, meanwhile, is seething. "He knows Jason set up the whole thing," Johnson says. "Philip runs after him screaming, 'You're not going to get away with this.' He chases Jason out to the hallway, and Philip punches him."

Another scuffle erupts when Jan starts taunting Mimi. "Jan starts telling Mimi off and making fun of her. She says something like, 'We should have dumped a bucket of soapy water on you," Farah Fath (Mimi) says, alluding to the fact that her character's hygiene leaves something to be desired. "We kind of get into a little catfight. It's really cool." The school principal separates the two girls, but Mimi ends up running out of the dance hall. Upon witnessing Mimi's hasty exit, Belle decides to go after her friend. Shawn opts to join her, as does Chloe, which infuriates Philip. "I have a line like, 'I take a bucket of chicken blood for you and you're running after Mimi?" Johnson adds.

As Belle, Chloe and Shawn tail Mimi, Belle can't hide her anxiety. "She's worried about her best friend," Storms explains. "First, they see Mimi outside talking to a drug dealer, and Belle thinks Mimi really is on drugs. She gets all emotional about that."

But Mimi promptly tells off the dealer and hurries away as Belle, Chloe and Shawn continue to secretly follow her. To their surprise, Mimi runs right past her house. That's when the trio notices a foreclosure sign on the front door. But what they discover next is even more shocking: Mimi's current "home" is a box under a bridge. Mimi enters and presents her family with food she took from the dance hall. Her brother is coughing and obviously very ill. When Mimi's mother insists that they need to get him to a hospital immediately, Mimi is torn. She knows it means everyone will learn the truth about her living conditions. To Mimi's horror, Belle arrives, and announces that they already know.

Downtime At The Dance
While Chloe is the center of attention at the prom, behind the scenes, the actresses eyed a prop table filled with treats, and an extra named Kaven, who plays the disc jockey. "All the girls were totally eating off the prop tables," Kirsten Storms (Belle) says. "Cookies, pretzels, brownies, chips. By the end of the prom, we had eaten everything. We had to keep checking our teeth in a mirror to make sure our smiles were OK." With their gorgeous smiles intact, the girls kept busy flirting with Kaven. "He was absolutely gorgeous. During rehearsal, Nadia (Bjorlin, Chloe) and I would always change out lines. Like, 'I'm going to go after Mimi. Chloe, will you be OK?' She'd say, 'Yeah, I'm taking Kaven with me.'"

Jason Cook and Jay Kenneth Johnson (Shawn and Philip) spent their downtime perfecting their moves. "I can't dance that well," Johnson admitted. "I kept stepping on Nadia's feet, tripping over my own feet. I couldn't get it right. It was so frustrating. But the whole thing has inspired me to take dance lessons."

For Cook, learning the steps to his numbers was a lot easier than the Saturday Night Fever routine he performed at the last high school dance. "I like Latin dancing," he says. "I know how to merengue and salsa. The choreographer even worked some of my moves in."

Unfortunately, Cooks' graceful footwork didn't carry over to the scene where he had to shove Chloe out of the way of the blood. "The floor was really slippery, and I had on these slick shoes," he says. "When I ran toward Nadia, I ended up slipping and tackling her. I looked like a defensive lineman hitting a quarterback."

It was during that rescue scene that poor Johnson began an eight-hour stint covered in faux blood. "It was only corn syrup mixed with food coloring, but it was disgusting," he says. "It was poured on my head at 10 in the morning, and we didn't finish taping until 6:30 that night, I took a shower at lunch time so I could go out and get some food, then makeup painted more blood on when I got back."
