Dreams Can Come True
Chapter 27: Confrontation
“Excuse me sir,” the flight attendant said, waking Luis up, “we’re about to land.”
“Oh, thanks,” Luis said groggily. He looked over at Sheridan. She was still sleeping soundly with a hint of a smile on her lips. Luis wondered what she was dreaming about. He brushed her hair off her forehead and planted light kisses on her forehead and cheek.
“Hey baby, it’s time to wake up,” Luis whispered in her ear and she began to stir.
“Hey,” she whispered squinting at Luis through her still half-closed eyes. ‘Did Luis just call me baby!’ Sheridan thought as her smile grew and she opened her eyes fully.
“Were about to land, so we have to put our seats up.”
“Ok,” she answered.
“What were you dreaming about?” Luis asked.
Sheridan blushed slightly. “You.”
“What was I doing? Something good I hope,” he teased.
“I’m not telling, but if you’re lucky, I’ll show you sometime,” She flirted, leaning across the seat to give Luis a kiss.
“I’m going to make sure all of your dreams come true Sheridan.”
After the plane landed Luis and Sheridan waited at baggage claim for her luggage.
“Luis did you notice that a couple of people were staring at us?” Sheridan asked.
“Yeah, sort of,” Luis answered, “but I just figured they could see how happy and in love with you I am.”
“You are so wonderful,” she gushed as she hugged Luis and kissed him. “So do you want to go to your house first?”
“What time is it here?”
“It’s almost two.”
“I’m not going to go to my house. Miguel and Theresa are still at school and mama is at work, so I think I should go to the youth center and see what kind of trouble Hank’s gotten in to.”
“Then we’ll drop you off first and I’ll go by my cottage and drop the bags off and go see Ethan. Plus I want to have a little chat with my brother.”
“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” Luis asked, “I don’t trust Julian.”
“Don’t worry, I don’t trust him either,” she said, “I’ll be fine.” They got the bags and took a cab to the youth center.
“Are you sure you don’t want me to go with you?” Luis asked.
“I’m sure. I can handle Julian.”
“Ok,” Luis said. He hugged Sheridan and gave her a long kiss. Then he started to get out of the cab. Sheridan grabbed him and pulled him back in for another kiss.
“I miss you already,” she said softly.
“Why don’t you come back here in a few hours and we’ll go do something fun,” he said. “Ok, sounds good. I love you.”
“I love you too.”
The cab arrived at Sheridan’s cottage and the driver carried her luggage inside. She looked around her living room. Everything was packed up in boxes. She didn’t really feel like dealing with that yet so she decided to walk up to the main house to talk to Julian.
RING, RING
“Hello, Crane residence,” Pilar answered.
“Hi Mama,” Luis said.
“Luis, did you just get back?”
“Yeah, I’m at the youth center and I wanted to call and let you know that I was here,” he said.
“Is Sheridan with you?” Pilar asked.
No she is on her way over there. She wanted to see Ethan and Julian. Keep an eye on her for me though, she is pretty mad at Julian.”
Just then Pilar heard the front door slam. “I think she just came in Luis, I have to go,” she said.
“Ok Mama, I’ll see you later.”
Sheridan walked into the living room as Pilar hung up the phone. “Sheridan, I’m so glad you’re home,” she said giving Sheridan a hug. “I just got off the phone with Luis and he said you were coming. He said you are upset with your brother, but you look so happy.”
“Well, I am mad at Julian, but overall I am very happy.”
“Is it because of my son?” Pilar asked.
“Yeah,” Sheridan blushed, “he’s so wonderful. I’ve never known anyone like him before. I hope you’re not mad. I know you didn’t want us to get involved.”
“Of course I’m not mad at you. I just worry about both of you,’ Pilar stated. “All I really want is for the two of you to be happy.”
“We are,” Sheridan said, “I better go see Julian now. I want to get this over as soon as possible.”
“Sheridan you’re back,” Ivy exclaimed as she walked into the room, “and you’re looking for Julian.”
Sheridan walked up to Ivy and gave her a hug.
“Don’t worry. I won’t tell,” she whispered in Ivy’s ear.
“I’m glad you’re home,” Ivy said, “Julian’s in his study.
“Thanks Ivy. I’ll see you later.”
When Sheridan walked into the study Julian was having a glass of brandy. Sheridan could tell he was well on his way to being drunk and it was only three in the afternoon. “Hello, brother dear,” Sheridan said as she closed the door behind her. When Julian saw her standing there he choked on his brandy. “What’s the matter Julian aren’t you glad to see me?”
Once Julian regained his composure he began. “Of course I’m glad to see you. I’ve heard all about your latest exploits in Paris. In fact Father has been trying to reach you all morning. I think I’ll give him a call so he can speak with you.”
“No you’re not,” Sheridan said forcefully, “I don’t care about what Father has to say and I’m sure you’ll tell him exactly what I said as soon as I’m gone.”
“You shouldn’t ignore Father Sheridan. He’s very upset that Luis was in Paris with you, especially after you found out he was using you.”
“Luis never used me Julian,” Sheridan said choosing her words carefully, “it was all just a misunderstanding and now we are together. In fact, I think that somehow you and Father were responsible for me thinking Luis was just using me.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Julian said, feigning innocence, “I never did anything.”
“Save your breath Julian,” Sheridan yelled, “Luis and I are in love and there is nothing you can do about it.”
“You’re in love with the maid’s son,” Julian scoffed, “what are you planning on doing, becoming a little housewife living in the trailer park where a big night out is the drive thru at Burger Barn.” Julian started laughing, “Officer Lowlife is only after your money. He is only using you, just like everyone else.”
Sheridan was furious now. “You’re the only one getting used around here Julian. You have never been your own man, you were always Father’s little puppet. At least I have my own life and someone who actually loves me for who I am. You are just Father’s little maid, cleaning up his messes and doing his dirty work.”
She opened her mouth to say something else, but before she could get the words out Julian slapped her hard across the face.

Chapter 28: Unconscious
Sheridan just stood there stunned for a second not quite sure what just happened. Without even thinking she swung at Julian. Her fist connected squarely with the side of Julian’s face and he fell back onto the floor unconscious. Sheridan just stood there looking down at Julian. He was out cold but he was still breathing. She touched her face. It stung where Julian had hit her. She sighed and a tear rolled down her cheek. She walked out of the study and went back into the living room.
Ivy and Pilar looked up as she walked into the room. She was crying and still had her hand on her face.
Pilar gasped, “Sheridan what happened?”
“He hit me,” she said quietly.
“That little bastard,” Ivy yelled, “I’m going to give him a piece of my mind.”
“Ivy wait, I hit him back. He’s unconscious.”
Ivy started to laugh. ‘This is great. I’ll be able to taunt him for a while that his little sister knocked him out,’ Ivy thought. “I have got to go see this for myself,” Ivy said and she headed for the study.
“I have to get out of here,” Sheridan told Pilar and she ran out of the house. She went back over to her cottage and took off in her car.
At the youth center Luis was in the gym playing basketball. Hank wasn’t at the youth center when Luis got there and there was no answer when he called Hank’s cell phone.
“Hey buddy,” Hank called as he walked in the gym, “you’re back already.”
“Yeah I just got back and I was looking for you,” Luis said, “where were you?”
“Just running a few errands,” Hank said, “I saw Sam this morning and he didn’t mention that you were coming back.”
“He doesn’t know yet. I still need to talk to him. I’m going to the police station in a few minutes.”
“Don’t bother,” Hank said, “he and Grace are off somewhere this afternoon, but he will be here tonight.”
“Why is Sam coming to the youth center tonight?”
“I thought you would still be out of town so I asked him to help me chaperone the dance tonight.”
“What dance?” Luis asked confused, “there’s not supposed to be a dance tonight.”
“The kids are all excited about the big basketball game today and they wanted to have a dance afterward to celebrate the victory or dance away their sorrows, whatever the case may be.”
“I thought I told you to watch the place and make sure nothing went wrong, not organize a dance,” Luis said a little irritated.
“Come on Luis, it’s only a dance.”
Then Beth walked in the youth center. “Hey Hank I’m here to help you decorate,” she called as she entered the gym, “oh Luis, I didn’t know you were back.” She walked toward Luis like she was going to hug him but Luis put his hand on her arm to keep her from getting too close.
“Hi Beth, how are you,” Luis said patting her on the arm and then walking away a little.
Beth gave Hank a worried look. “I’m so glad you’re back Luis, now you will be here for the dance tonight,” she said trying to hint that she wanted to go with him.
“Uh yeah I guess so. I should really check in at the station though,” Luis said trying to change the subject.
“I told you that Sam isn’t there right now buddy,” Hank said, “besides you never told me how the case went. Did you catch the bad guys?” “Well I did catch the bad guys,” Luis said and he turned away from them and threw the basketball through the hoop, trying to decide what to say to them, “but..”
Just then Sheridan walked in the gym. “Sheridan,” Hank said surprised to see her. But she just walked past Hank and Beth not really even noticing them. When Luis heard her name he turned around. Sheridan threw her arms around Luis’ neck and he instinctively wrapped his arms tightly across her back. She buried her face into the side of his neck and he could feel her warm tears against his skin.
“It’s okay baby, what’s wrong?” Luis asked, “did something happen with Julian.
‘Baby,” Hank mouthed to Beth with a look of desperate confusion on both their faces. “Julian and I just got into it.” Sheridan said sighing her hot breath across Luis’ neck,” but I’m fine. I just really needed to be with you.”
“Don’t worry Sheridan everything will be fine,” Luis said rubbing his hands across her back.
“When did you get back from Paris Sheridan?” Hank asked trying to find out what was going on.
“Hank,” Sheridan said startled, just now realizing that there were other people in the room. She pulled back a little from Luis and looked over at Hank and Beth. When she turned her head Luis saw that her cheek was a little red. His entire body tensed up and he gritted his teeth.
“Oh my god Sheridan,” Luis said, “did Julian hit you?”
“It’s nothing,” she said touching her face, “I’m fine, really.”
Luis let go of Sheridan. “How dare he lay a hand on you,” Luis yelled as he started for the door, “I’ll kill him.”
“Luis wait,” Sheridan called after him.
He stopped and looked at her, “that bastard’s gonna pay for this,” he said and started to walk out again.
“Luis,” Sheridan yelled, but he didn’t stop. “LUIS LOPEZ-FITZGERALD,” she screamed, “come back here right now.”

Chapter 29: The Front Page
Beth leaned over to Hank and whispered, “oh good they’re going to fight.”
Luis stopped and turned around and walked back towards Sheridan. “I’m not going to let him get away with hurting you.”
“You can’t go see him right now Luis.”
“Why not?”
“Because he’s unconscious.”
“He’s unconscious!” Luis said in disbelief, “what in the hell happened.”
“Well, he hit me first,” Sheridan said quietly, “so I hit him back.”
“With what?” Beth added sarcastically.
“My fist,” Sheridan said dryly, not even bothering to look at Beth.
“You knocked him out?” Luis asked, still a little surprised. Sheridan nodded yes and a grin spread across Luis’ face. He was proud of her for standing up to Julian and defending herself.
“I told you I could handle Julian,” Sheridan smiled.
“And you certainly did, didn’t you,” Luis said leaning in and giving her a sweet kiss. Beth and Hank’s jaws dropped as they watched them kiss.
“Are you sure you’re ok?” Luis asked.
“My cheek is fine, he just slapped me,” Sheridan answered, “but my hand is kind of sore. Julian’s jaw is like a rock.”
“I’ll go get you some ice,” Luis said and he walked out of the gym.
As soon as Luis was out of earshot Beth walked over to Sheridan, “What the hell is going on here Sheridan!”
“I thought you were in Paris,” Hank added, “when did you get back?”
“It’s kind of a long story,” Sheridan said, unsure of what Luis had already told them, “but I just got back a couple of hours ago.”
Luis came back with the ice and interrupted the conversation. “How’s that?” he asked putting the ice on her hand.
“It’s fine Luis,” Sheridan answered, “I don’t think I hurt it, it’s just a little stiff.”
“This should never have happened,” Luis said running his fingertips across her cheek, “I should have insisted on going with you.”
“You can’t be with me 24 hours a day Luis, and I think I have proven that every so often I can take care of myself.”
“Yes you have,” Luis laughed, “I just hope you don’t get mad at me again.” He rubbed his jaw pretending like she just hit him.
“Cute officer,” Sheridan said. “After all this happened with Julian all I could think about was getting away form that house and anything that has to do with Julian or my father.” Luis slipped his arms around her waist. They were in their own little world, once again forgetting about Beth and Hank. Sheridan looked into Luis’ eyes, “when I was driving over here I made a decision. I’m going to move out of the cottage.”
Are you sure you want to do that?” Luis asked concerned, “your father and brother will be really angry if you do that.”
“I don’t care what they think about it. I’m tired of them trying to control my life. They can take all of their fake concern and money and their scheming behind my back and shove it. After what they did to us and everything that happened in Paris I know what is really important to me and I’ll never have it if I allow them to have a hold over me.”
“Just remember what I said in Paris, I’m never going to let them hurt you again,” Luis said, “and no matter what you decide to do I will always be here to help you.”
“Wait a minute,” Hank said stepping up to them, “you were in Paris with Sheridan? I thought you two weren’t even speaking to each other and Luis, you said you were working on a case.”
“Well Hank,” Luis started, but he never finished because he heard his name.
“Luis, Luis,” Theresa yelled walking through the youth center and into the gym. “Oh Luis, thank goodness.” Theresa threw her arms around Luis and hugged him tightly. “Mama told me about Sheridan,” she said letting go of Luis, “but she didn’t say anything about you getting shot.”
“It’s ok Theresa, I’m fine, “Luis said trying to calm her down.
“But in the picture there was blood all over your shirt and Sheridan was unconscious,” Theresa said. “What picture?” Sheridan asked, “how did you find out that Luis got shot?”
“I went by the newsstand after school got out to buy a magazine and I saw this,” Theresa said holding up a tabloid magazine. The guy there said they delivered it late this morning because they held the presses waiting for the cover story. He had already sold half his copies.”
“Oh my god,” Sheridan gasped as Luis grabbed the magazine form Theresa. On the front page there were two big pictures. The first one was of Luis carrying Sheridan to the ambulance after he had rescued her. Sheridan’s eyes were closed and the shoulder of Luis’ shirt was covered in blood. The second picture was of Luis and Sheridan standing on the balcony this morning. Sheridan was wearing her silvery gray nightgown and she was smiling. Luis was standing behind her wearing only his silk burgundy pajama pants. He had his arms around her waist and his chin was resting on her shoulder. It was almost like they were looking strait at the camera. The white curtains blew in the breeze behind them making the picture look like something off the cover of a romance novel. The headline read, “Cop Rescues Crane Heiress, But Did He Steal Her Heart?”
“I can’t believe this,” Luis said shaking his head.
“There’s more inside Luis,” Theresa said. Luis opened it and found an article with details all about Sheridan being kidnapped and Luis rescuing her and getting shot. It also talked about Luis arresting Sheridan last summer and being in charge of her community service. Then it said that Luis was staying at her house and they had been seen in several places around Paris together. The last line of the article said, “Has Sheridan Crane finally found true love, or will she be heart broken once again.” There were more pictures of Luis and Sheridan too. There was a shot from the back of Sheridan laying her head on Luis’ shoulder in the back of the police car, a picture of them holding hand in front of the Louvre, and walking by the Eiffel Tower. The last picture was from the video surveillance camera in the elevator at the Eiffel Tower of Sheridan and Luis kissing passionately.

Chapter 30: Parisian Presents
“What is it?” Hank asked. He grabbed the tabloid out of Luis’ hands and he and Beth looked through it, their eyes wide and their jaws dropped.
“I’m so sorry,” Sheridan said to Luis.
“It’s not your fault Sheridan.”
“But I should have been more careful. I know that there are always photographers following me in Paris.”
“I just don’t understand how they managed to get that picture of us from this morning in there,” Luis said.
“The marvels of modern technology,” Sheridan said sarcastically, “if it was a digital picture all they had to do was e-mail it to the magazine and in a few minutes it is ready for the presses. Plus with the time difference between here and Paris, when that picture was taken this morning in Paris it was really late last night here. But I should have thought about there being security cameras in the elevator.”
“Hey now that was my fault, I started it after all. It is a little embarrassing having pictures of us for everyone to see, but I don’t care if the whole world knows that I’m in love with you. A grin spread across Sheridan’s face and she kissed Luis on the cheek.
“Aww, you guys are so cute,” Theresa said, “I knew you two were in love. Well, I probably better go now, I want to go buy a new dress for the dance tonight. Are you guys going?”
“What dance?” Sheridan asked.
“Hank decided to plan a dance while I was gone,” Luis answered, “and I did say we were going to do something fun tonight, so if you don’t mind spending the evening dancing with me we can go.”
“There is almost nothing I would rather do than spend tonight wrapped in your arms on the dance floor,” Sheridan replied.
“Ok, stop being so cute, you’re making me depressed that I don’t have a date for the dance tonight,” Theresa sighed. “So big bro, since you’re the only man in my life right now, did you bring me back anything from Paris?”
“I’m sor…..”
“Of course we brought you something,” Sheridan interrupted, giving Luis a wink, “and you’re going to love it, but it is still packed at my cottage. In fact, I think you should skip going shopping and come home with me and get it.”
“But Sheridan, I still have to get a dress for the… Did you get me a dress?” Theresa asked excitedly.
“Maybe,” Sheridan said smiling.
“It is a dress,” Theresa said, talking quickly, “What does it look like? What color is it? Where did you get it?”
“Well you’ll just have to wait and see what it looks like, but I will tell you that the dress is made by Roberto Duranté and it’s a one of a kind.”
“Oh my god, I can’t believe it,” Theresa gasped, “me wearing a Roberto Duranté dress. This is so exciting; I have to call Whitney. I almost forgot, I am supposed to go to Whitney’s to get ready for the dance.”
“Why don’t we pick her up and we’ll get ready at my house,” Sheridan suggested.
“Ok,” Theresa replied and she called Whitney on her cell phone.
“Sheridan I didn’t buy Theresa a dress,” Luis said.
“I know, but I did,” Sheridan said.
“When?”
“When I went shopping for you. I saw the dress when I was getting mine and I knew it was perfect for Theresa. And I got something for Miguel and Pilar too.”
“Sheridan you didn’t need to do that.”
“I know but I wanted to. When I was a kid my father and brother would travel places and I always hoped they would bring me back something, but they never did. I just know how happy it would have made me, so I wanted to do it and I didn’t know if you would remember to get anything since you spent all your time in Paris with me.”
“Thank you Sheridan, that was very nice of you. You made Theresa so happy. I just wish I had thought about getting them presents myself. But next time you think there is something I should be doing, tell me about it ok.” Luis said.
“Ok I will.”
“Are you sure you want to go back home,” Luis asked concerned, “what if Julian comes looking for you?”
“I’ll be fine,” Sheridan answered, “I’ll lock all the doors and if Julian comes by I wont let him in and I’ll call you.”
“Maybe I should just come with you,” Luis said.
“Stop worrying Luis. It’ll only be for a couple of hours and then I’ll never have to go back there again, ok.”
“Ok, but I’m going to call and check on you,” Luis said.
Theresa came back over to Luis and Sheridan, “ I called Whitney and she is going to get her stuff ready and we can pick her up. I’m so excited.”
“I think you ladies better get going before Theresa explodes,” Luis laughed.
“Ok, we’ll meet you back here for the dance,” Sheridan said. She hugged Luis and gave him a quick kiss. Then she started to turn and walk away but Luis grabbed her and pulled her back to him.
“I can’t wait to dance with you again,” Luis whispered in her ear and then kissed her softly. Sheridan walked to the door and gave Luis a little wave before she left.
“I can’t believe that little slut stole my man,” Beth muttered under her breath.
“What’s with you Luis,” Hank yelled, “first you lie to me about where you are going and then you steal my girl. I thought you were my friend.”
“Sheridan isn’t your girl, she never was and I told you it would be Sheridan’s decision who she wanted to be with,” Luis said annoyed, “and I’m sorry I lied to you but I had to make sure that her father and brother didn’t know I was going to Paris.”
“But you and Sheridan weren’t even speaking to each other,” Beth said, “why would you fly all the way to Paris to see her?”
“We just had a misunderstanding and I went to work it out and now everything is fine,” Luis said, “He was getting tired of all their questions and accusations. “I’d better go now.”
“But Luis don’t you want to stay and help me decorate for the dance?” Beth said, trying unsuccessfully to flirt with Luis.
“Sorry, I need to go find Miguel and Mama and I have to change for the dance. But since this dance was Hank’s idea I’m sure he can help you.” Luis said and he quickly left before they could say anything else.

Chapter 31: Dresses
“Oh Sheridan, it’s beautiful,” Theresa gushed, holding the lavender dress up to her chest, “thank you so much.” Theresa hugged Sheridan and then turned to Whitney. “Isn’t it the most beautiful dress you’ve ever seen Whit!”
“Yeah, it’s beautiful,” Whitney said, “it’s going to look great on you.”
Theresa leaned up to Whitney’s ear and whispered, “I know Ethan is going to realize he loves me when he sees me in this dress.” Whitney just sighed.
“So Sheridan do you know what you are going to wear tonight?” Theresa asked.
“I have no idea. Do you want to help me pick something?” She asked.
“Sure,” Whitney and Theresa answered and they went into Sheridan’s bedroom. Sheridan opened a couple of suitcases on her bed and then took some dresses out of the garment bag.
Theresa looked in one of the suitcases and noticed some men’s clothes in it. Theresa picked up the pajama pants. “Sheridan, since when does Luis wear silk pajamas?” she teased.
Sheridan’s cheeks turned a deep pink. “Um, well, Luis’ bag got stolen when he was saving me from those French thugs and he didn’t have any clothes so I bought him some new ones.”
“And Luis picked these?” Theresa questioned.
“No I picked them out. He was still asleep while I went shopping.”
“He looked really good in them,” Whitney said and Sheridan stared at her confused. “I saw the pictures too. By now everyone has probably seen or heard about you and Luis.”
“Oh god, I almost forgot about that. How am I going to face all those people at the dance tonight.”
“Don’t worry about it Sheridan. Just remember what Luis said, he doesn’t care if the whole world knows you are in love and neither should you,” Theresa said.
“You’re right,” Sheridan agreed, “now lets get back to the dresses. It’s going to have to be something that I took to Paris because all of my other dresses are packed in the boxes and I don’t want to open those since I’m not staying.”
“Why? Are you going back to Paris?” Theresa asked, “You and Luis looked so happy together, I thought it meant you had come back to Harmony for good.”
“I’m staying in Harmony,” Sheridan explained, “I’m just not going to be living at the cottage anymore.”
“Where are you going to live?” Whitney asked.
“I don’t know yet. Tonight I’m going to stay at a hotel and then tomorrow I’ll start looking for an apartment or a house or something. So which one of these should I wear?” Sheridan asked laying the dresses on the bed.
“I think you should wear the black one,” Whitney suggested.
“I can’t, I wore that last night when Luis and I went to dinner. I’m kind of thinking either the blue or the red.”
“Luis’ favorite color is blue,” Whitney noted.
“Yeah but Luis really likes you in red,” Theresa said, “I remember him saying something about you wearing a red dress to dinner and being the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen.”
“On our first date I wore a red dress,” Sheridan blushed, “he really said that about me?”
“Well, he didn’t actually tell me,” Theresa laughed, “ I overheard him talking to himself after he came home. But, I definitely think you should wear the red, and it will be better for dancing.” The red dress was almost full length and it had two long slits, one on either side that ran up to just above the knee.
“The red it is then,” Sheridan said.
A short time later Sheridan was in the bathroom fixing her hair while Theresa and Whitney did their makeup. There was a knock at the door and Sheridan went to answer it. She peeked out the window to make sure it wasn’t Julian but it was Ethan. She opened the door and he rushed in and hugged her.
“Are you ok? Mother just told me what happened,” Ethan said.
“Yes I’m fine Ethan.”
“I can’t believe Father hit you.” Ethan said in disbelief.
“Mr. Crane hit you?” Theresa gasped as she walked into the room, “no wonder Luis didn’t want you to come back here alone.”
Ethan just stared at Theresa for a moment, amazed by how beautiful she looked. Finally he snapped out of his trance. “Don’t worry Theresa, Sheridan gave him a lesson he’ll never forget, and if he does, Mother will be happy to remind him.”
“Mr. Crane is such a jerk.” Sheridan and Ethan looked at each other and then looked back at Theresa, surprised by her comment. “What?” Theresa said,” just because I’m always polite to him doesn’t mean that I don’t hear the things people say he does. Besides, the way he looks at me sometimes, ughh, it makes me want to throw up.”
Sheridan just laughed. “Well, don’t worry about Father,” Ethan said in a very protective tone, “I already warned him to stay away from you. Plus he knows Luis would kill him if he came anywhere near you. Speaking of Luis, he isn’t coming over here is he? Because if he sees me here with Theresa, I’m the one he’s going to kill.”
“Don’t worry Luis isn’t coming over, we are meeting at the dance,” Sheridan said, “and I’m working on convincing him that you are a good guy.”
“Well, I don’t think Mr. Crane hitting you is going to help any,” Theresa sighed, “is that why you are moving Sheridan?”
“Wait a minute? Where are you moving?” Ethan asked.
“I don’t know yet, but don’t worry, I’m staying in Harmony,” Sheridan answered. “I’d better finish getting ready for the dance, it’s almost time to go.” Sheridan went back into the bedroom.
“You look really beautiful,” Ethan told Theresa, “I bet all the guys will be lined up to dance with you.” Ethan felt a pang of jealousy at the thought of other guys dancing with Theresa but he pushed it aside.
“I don’t think so,” Theresa said quietly, and there’s only one guy I really want to dance with and he won’t be there.”
“He has no idea what he is missing,” Ethan said, once again mesmerized by Theresa.
Sheridan stepped back into the room and she noticed the way Ethan and Theresa were looking at each other. “Ethan can you help me put my bags in the car?” she asked.
“Sure,” Ethan answered, breaking his gaze from Theresa. Ethan put Sheridan’s luggage in the car and Sheridan, Theresa and Whitney left for the dance.
When they got to the youth center Sam stopped Sheridan just as they came in the front door. “Sheridan can I speak to you for a minute?” Sam asked.
“Sure, you guys go on in, I’ll be there in a minute,” Sheridan said, “what did you need to talk to me about Chief Bennett?”
“It’s about Luis.”

Chapter 32: The Dance
“What about Luis?” Sheridan asked, “did something happen?”
“No, everything is fine,” Sam said, “great in fact. I wanted to talk to you about what happened in Paris. The police commissioner saw the article about you and Luis in that tabloid.”
“Oh, no,” Sheridan said, “ Luis is going to be really upset.”
“He definitely won’t be upset,” Sam said, “the commissioner called the Paris police and Interpol to get the full story on Luis rescuing you and catching those French drug lords and he decided to promote Luis to detective.” Sheridan’s eyes widened, “Luis made detective! He must be so happy.”
“Actually he doesn’t know yet,” Sam smiled, “I thought maybe you’d like to be the one to tell him.”
“I’d love to,” Sheridan said, a grin spreading across her face, “I can’t wait to see the look on Luis’ face. Thank you Sam.” Sheridan walked into the gym to look for Luis. There were a lot of people at the dance already and Sheridan didn’t see Luis right away. She was about to walk to the other side of the room to see if Luis was over there, but Hank came up to her.
“Hey Sheridan, how about a dance with my favorite girl?” Hank asked.
“I’m sorry Hank,” Sheridan answered, “I need to find Luis,” and she walked off leaving Hank seething.
She finally found Luis talking to Miguel. Luis had his back turned to Sheridan, so he didn’t see her coming. She walked up behind Luis and wrapped her arms around his waist.
“Would you care to dance Detective Lopez-Fitzgerald?” Sheridan said.
Luis turned around and smiled at Sheridan. I would love to dance with…..what did you say?”
“I said would you like to dance with me Detective?”
“But…”
“Apparently I’m not the only one who thinks you’re a hero,” Sheridan said giving Luis a big grin. “Congratulations you deserve it Luis.” She kissed Luis on the cheek.
“You’re serious?” Luis asked in shock, “I really made detective?”
“Yes, Sam just told me,” Sheridan said.
An excited Luis picked Sheridan up off her feet and twirled her around in the air. Then he pulled her into a passionate kiss. All eyes at the dance were on them.
“I can’t believe this is really happening,” Luis said.
“Believe it,” Sam said as he walked up to the couple. “Congratulations Luis. You’re gonna be the best detective this department has ever had.”
“Thanks Sam,” Luis said, grinning from eat to ear, “When did this happen?”
“Today actually,” Sam answered, “the commissioner heard about your daring rescue of Sheridan and decided that Harmony’s finest police officer should be promoted to detective.”
“This is so great Sam,” Luis said excitedly, “tomorrow will be my first day as a detective.”
“Actually, since tomorrow was already scheduled to be your day off before you took off for Paris, you just sleep in and I’ll see you at work on Thursday.” Sam said and then he left to find Grace.
“I guess it turned out good for me that you always manage to wind up in some kind of trouble,” Luis teased Sheridan.
“At least I’ll always know that you’ll be here to rescue me,” Sheridan said, “now how about that dance detective?”
“Anything you want,” Luis said and he led her on to the dance floor. And that’s where they stayed for most of the night, wrapped in each other’s arms dancing to song after song. They took an occasional break to catch their breath and get something to drink. They didn’t even notice Hank and Beth standing in the corner watching them jealously.
As Luis poured Sheridan a glass of punch she let out a big yawn. “I’m getting kind of sleepy too. I think the jet lag is finally catching up with us,” Luis said.
“Yeah, I don’t think I can dance another dance. I better get going because I haven’t even checked into a hotel yet,” Sheridan said.
“You don’t need a hotel Sheridan.”
“But Luis, I told you I don’t want to stay at the cottage not even for one more night.”
“I don’t want you staying there either. What I meant was that you don’t need a hotel room because I want you to come and stay with me.”
“I don’t want to impose Luis. Pilar already has her hands full with the three of you.”
“I spoke to Mama before I came here and she would love to have you stay with us and so would I. But if you don’t want to I understand. It’s not exactly what you are used to.”
“Luis, I would love to stay with you. Just because it isn’t what I’m used to doesn’t mean it isn’t what I want. I always wanted to live in a real house with a real family and now I’ll finally get to see what it’s really like. Plus, it will give me a chance to find out everything about you,” Sheridan said giving Luis a wink.
“Well then lets get going, but first I want to say goodbye to Theresa.” Theresa was talking with some friends when Luis and Sheridan came over.
“Hey sis,” Luis said tapping Theresa on the shoulder, “Sheridan and I are gonna head out. She’s going to stay at our house for a while.”
“That’s great Sheridan,” Theresa said, giving her a hug, “it’s going to be so much fun with you around.”
“Hey, aren’t I fun?” Luis protested.
“Of course Luis, I just mean it will be nice to have another woman in the house,” Theresa said. “Mama said I could spend the night at Whitney’s, so I’ll be home in the morning.”
“Ok here you can use my car,” Luis said handing her the keys, “but don’t you dare touch that siren.”
“Who me?” Theresa said feigning innocence, “why would you even think such a thing.”
“Don’t play innocent with me.”
“Look it was just that one time and I was late for a test an that old guy was driving way under the speed limit. I promise it will never happen again.”
“Ok fine, see you in the morning,” Luis said and he and Sheridan left the youth center.

Chapter 33: Bad Dreams
“Welcome to my home,” Luis said as he and Sheridan walked through the front door of the Lopez-Fitzgerald house, “ I know it’s not much but…”
“Stop that,” Sheridan said, “your house is great and it has the most important thing in it, you.” Luis wrapped his arms around Sheridan’s waist and gave her a soft kiss. Sheridan looked around the living room and when she noticed the blankets and pillows sitting on the couch she let out a big yawn. “I guess I’d better get comfy on the couch before I fall asleep standing up,” Sheridan laughed.
“You’re not sleeping on the couch,” Luis said, “you’re sleeping in my room.”
“Then what are the blankets for?”
“Mama must have left them out for me as a reminder that I need to set a good example for Theresa and Miguel.”
“Does that mean you’re not going to sleep in your room with me?” Sheridan asked.
“I’m sorry, I can’t.”
“But Luis I don’t want you to have to sleep on the couch because of me. It’s your room, I should be the one to sleep on the couch.”
“Don’t be silly Sheridan. You’re a guest here and you are staying in my room. Besides, just the thought of you sleeping in my bed will give me plenty to dream about while I’m out here on the couch. Come on, I’ll take you to my room.” Luis picked up Sheridan’s bags and led her through the house and into his bedroom. “So what do you think?” Luis asked as he put the suitcases down on the floor.
“I like it,” Sheridan said. The room had blue walls and dark wood furniture. “It’s definitely you.” She looked around and noticed the shelves on the walls that were full of trophies and awards. “Wow. I thought Hank was exaggerating when he said you won just about everything in school.”
“Well, not exactly everything. But you know what the most important prize I’ve ever one is?”
“What?”
“Your heart.”
“Oooo Luis, keep talking like that and you’ll never make it down to the couch,” Sheridan teased and she sat down on the bed. She noticed something sitting on the pillow. There was a plate with three chocolate chip cookies and a note. “Look Luis, Pilar left us cookies.” Sheridan read the note out loud, “I’m so glad you are here and I hope you feel at home with us. Love, Pilar.”
“She must be worried that you’re still upset about what happened with Julian this afternoon so she left you cookies to cheer you up,” Luis said.
“Why don’t you get us some milk so we can share them and I’ll get ready for bed,” Sheridan suggested and Luis headed for the kitchen. When he got back they began their ritual of sharing the cookies. Luis fed Sheridan her half of the last cookies and she kissed some leftover chocolate off his lips. “You better stop that before we get in trouble,” Sheridan whispered when Luis started kissing her neck.
“I just can’t help myself,” Luis groaned, “especially with you wearing that to bed,” Luis motioned to Sheridan silk nightgown and he kissed her again. “I’m definitely going to be having good dreams about you down there on the couch.”
“I’ll make it up to you. When we have a little privacy I’ll make all your dreams come true,” Sheridan whispered in Luis’ ear. Luis tucked Sheridan under the covers and gave her a very long goodnight kiss. Luis went into the living room and fell asleep on the couch having sweet dreams of Sheridan.
Around three in the morning a noise woke Luis. He opened his eyes and then he heard it again.
“LUIS! Noooo! Luis!
It was Sheridan. Luis jumped off the couch and ran to his room. He closed the door behind him so Sheridan’s cries wouldn’t wake Miguel or Pilar.
“Luis, nooo, don’t die. Please don’t leave me,” Sheridan cried out in her sleep.
“It’s ok Sheridan, wake up,” Luis said softly as he slid down onto the bed next to her, “it’s only a dream baby, I’m right here. I’m okay and I’m not leaving you.”
Suddenly Sheridan’s eyes shot open and she grabbed onto Luis tightly. “Oh Luis, thank god. They shot you and there was blood everywhere and you wouldn’t wake up,” Sheridan rambled.
“It’s ok baby, it’s only a dream,” Luis said trying to comfort her, “I’m ok.”
“Oh Luis, it was so real. I was so scared that you were dead. I love you so much Luis. I don’t know what I’d do if I lost you,” Sheridan cried, her arms still tightly wrapped around Luis neck.
“You’re never going to lose me. I love you and I’ll always be here with you,” Luis said rubbing her back, “why don’t you lay back down and try to go back to sleep.”
Sheridan lay back down on the pillow but her eyes were still wide with fear. “Can you please stay with me,” Sheridan pleaded.
“Of course I can,” Luis said and he slipped under the covers with Sheridan. She snuggled up against his chest and he wrapped his arms around her protectively and they both fell asleep.

Chapter 34: The Letter
As Sheridan’s eyes slowly opened she realized she was nestled in Luis’ strong arms with her head lying on his chest. Once Luis had come to comfort her in the middle of the night, the nightmares stopped and she slept peacefully the rest of the night. Sheridan looked up at Luis, he was still sound asleep. She started waking him up by planting soft kisses across his chest.
“Mmm,” Luis moaned as he began to stir out of unconsciousness. As their lips met, Luis flipped Sheridan onto her back and he opened his eyes and looked down at her. “Hello beautiful,” Luis said and he started kissing on Sheridan’s neck.
Sheridan giggled as Luis’ kisses tickled behind her ear. “Are you always this playful in the morning?”
“Ohh no, it’s morning,” Luis suddenly realized, “I wasn’t supposed to sleep in here with you last night and Mama’s probably already gotten up and left for work. What time is it?”
Sheridan peeked around Luis’ arm to see the clock. “It’s 9:30.”
I’d better see if anyone is still home,” Luis said and he climbed out of the bed and put some pants on. He poked his head out into the hallway. “Someone’s in the kitchen. I’m going to go see who it is,” Luis said.
“Ok,” Sheridan answered, “I think I’ll take a quick shower. I’ll be out in a minute.”
Luis walked into the kitchen and found his mother standing at the stove cooking. “Morning Mama,” Luis said and he kissed Pilar on the cheek, “what are you still doing home? I thought you’d be at work already.”
“Mrs. Crane gave me the morning off because I wanted to talk to you and Sheridan. Is she still asleep?” Pilar asked.
“No, she’s taking a shower. Listen Mama, I’m sorry about sleeping in my room with Sheridan last night. I know you didn’t want me to, but she had a nightmare last night and she really needed me to stay with her.”
“It’s ok Luis. I heard Sheridan crying out in her sleep for you. I’m glad you were able to comfort her,” Pilar said, “you and Sheridan are adults Luis. What you choose to do is your business, but Miguel and Theresa are still young and impressionable and they look up to you.”
“I know Mama,” Luis replied, “and I’ll do my best to set a good example for them.”
“Good Morning Pilar,” Sheridan said as she walked into the kitchen, “something smells wonderful.”
“I thought you and Luis would like a hot breakfast,” Pilar answered.
“You didn’t have to do that Pilar.”
“Nonsense, I wanted to. Now go sit down at the table and I’ll get your food.”
Sheridan sat down at the table next to Luis and leaned over to his ear. “Are we in trouble?” she whispered.
“Nope,” Luis answered. Pilar served them their breakfast and while they ate they recounted the tale of their trip to Paris to Pilar. After they finished eating Luis put the dirty dishes in the sink.
“So what are you two planning on doing today?” Pilar asked.
“I don’t know Mama,” Luis answered, “Sam gave me the day off.”
“I suppose I better start looking for a job,” Sheridan said.
“A job?” Luis asked, “why?”
“Once my father finds out that we’re together and I’ve left the estate he will probably cut me off to try to force me to come back.”
“Can he do that?” Luis asked.
“It’s his money. He can do whatever he wants with it. In fact almost everything I’ve ever had belonged to my father. The only things that are really mine are my clothes and things and my car that Ethan bought me as a gift to cheer me up after I, uh, crashed into a very handsome police officer,” Sheridan laughed, “so at least I’ll have my car. But I don’t care about the rest of it. I don’t want to have anything to do with my father and that includes his money.”
“I agree that Mr. Crane will be very angry when he finds out that you are staying here with us, but I don’t think you need to look for a job,” Pilar said, “there is something I want to show you Sheridan. You and Luis go sit in the living room and I’ll go get it.”
“Pilar went off to her room and Sheridan and Luis sat down on the couch.
“I’m very proud of you for wanting to make it on your own without your fathers money, but are you sure that you want to get a job?” Luis asked.
“You just don’t think I can get a job do you?”
“That’s not what I said,” Luis protested, but then Pilar came back into the room.
“You should read this letter Sheridan,” Pilar said and she handed her an envelope.
Sheridan took the paper out of the envelope, “its from my mother,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper and she read the letter silently.
‘My Darling Sheridan, I am sitting in your nursery right now watching you sleep knowing that I will not live long enough to see you grow up into the beautiful woman I know you will become. I want you to grow up and have a happy life full of love, but I worry that may not happen. Your father is a very controlling man and doesn’t like it when things don’t go his way. I’ve seen how unhappy Ivy is in her marriage to your brother and my own marriage has been filled with many unpleasant memories as well and that is not what I want for you. That is why I have left this for you. It will give you the freedom to make your own choices, to live the life that you want without having to worry about your father. Pilar has promised to do her best to look out for you and help you grow into a strong woman with the morals and integrity that have been lacking in this family. I will miss you little one. Know that I have always and will always love you. Love, Mother.’
As Sheridan finished reading the letter tears were slowly rolling down her cheeks. “What is it Pilar? What did she leave for me?”
“This,” Pilar said and she handed Sheridan a small leather book. Sheridan opened it and her jaw dropped.

Chapter 35: The Books
“What is it?” Luis asked. Sheridan turned the book towards Luis so he could see it. It was a small leather account book. “Where did you get this Mama? There’s over a million dollars in there.”
“Shortly after you were born Sheridan your grandfather died in a car accident. Your mother took the money he left her and the life insurance money and hid it in this account for you. Your father never new about it.”
“You’ve had this all these years?” Luis asked.
“Yes,” Pilar answered, “Sheridan’s mother asked me to keep it hidden so Mr. Crane wouldn’t find out about it.”
“But you should have used this money to take care of your family Pilar,” Sheridan said.
“No Sheridan, this is your money. Your mother thought that you would need it one day and she was right,” Pilar said. “Now that you have this money you can do whatever you want but I hope you’ll consider staying here with us and taking your time to find a place that you really want to live in.”
“I’d love to keep staying here Pilar, but at least let me pay for myself while I’m here.”
“No Sheridan,” Luis said, “you’re not paying us anything. We love you and as far as I’m concerned you are part of our family. Besides, we don’t need the money, I just got a raise remember.”
“You got a raise?” Pilar asked.
“Oh Mama, I forgot to tell you,” Luis said, “you are looking at the Harmony Police Department’s newest detective.”
“Luis that’s wonderful. I’m so proud of you,” Pilar exclaimed, “tonight we’ll have a special dinner to celebrate, but now I really have to get to work. I’ll see you later.”
“Well now that you don’t have to look for a job, what do you want to do today?” Luis asked.
“I don’t really care what we do as long as I get to do it with you,” Sheridan answered.
“I do kind of need to go to the youth center for a little bit, do you mind?”
“That sounds great Luis, let’s go.”
Sheridan sat on the corner of Luis’ desk, the only spot on it that wasn’t covered
with papers. “What’s with all the mess Luis? You usually keep everything so organized.”
Luis sank down into the chair. “After you got mad at me I guess I kind of got distracted and let things pile up. All this paperwork needs to be filled out for the youth centers government funding and grants, and something is wrong with the books. For some reason I can’t get the accounts to balance,” he sighed, “and I can’t believe that Hank didn’t finish cleaning up after the dance. I guess I’d better go get started.”
“Ok, I’ll help you,” Sheridan said.
“No that’s ok, I think I tortured you enough while you were working off your community service hours. Plus, you look a little tired, you didn’t exactly sleep too well last night,” Luis said, “why don’t you just sit here at my desk and rest.”
“I’m fine Luis. I can help.”
“It’s ok Sheridan, I just have to put up tables and chairs and stuff. After that you can help me get out the sports equipment if you want.”
“Ok, maybe I’ll call the realtor and let them know that I’m looking for a new place to live.” Luis went into the gym and Sheridan picked up the phone.
About an hour later Luis came back into the office and was surprised by what he saw. All the papers on his desk were stacked in neat piles and Sheridan was leaned back in Luis’ chair with her feet up on his desk. “What did you do?” Luis asked.
“I sorted out all the forms that need to be filled out and I filed the stuff that was finished,” Sheridan answered grinning, “oh, and I balanced the books. You made one of the entries in the wrong account.” Luis just stared at her with a look of surprise on his face. “I knew you didn’t think I could get a job,” she said, “I tried to tell you when I started my community service that I could do more than just sweep floors and pick up basketballs but you wouldn’t listen.”
Luis picked Sheridan up out of his chair, sat down in the chair and pulled her down onto his lap. “I am very sorry I ever doubted you baby and I promise I’ll make it up to you,” Luis said and he kissed her passionately. “So where did you learn about accounting?”
“I had a double major in college one of which was International Business,” Sheridan answered.
“You don’t really seem like the business type to me.”
“Well it wasn’t my choice, it’s what my father wanted me to do.”
“Oh, was he planning on having you work at Crane Industries?”
“Hardly. He just wanted me to be able to hold up my end of the conversation when he married me off to some rich snobby business man in one of his business alliances,” Sheridan said sharply.
“I’m sorry,” Luis said, tightening his grip around her, “so what was your other major?”
“Foreign Language and Literature,” Sheridan answered, “I speak seven languages fluently.”
“Which ones?”
“English, French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish.”
“That’s only six Sheridan, I thought you said seven.”
“The last one I want to demonstrate for you,” she grinned.
“Oh really, what is it?” Luis asked.
“The language of love,” Sheridan said and she pulled Luis into a long steamy kiss.

Chapter 36: A Visitor
After Sheridan and Luis left the youth center they stopped by the realtor’s office to pick up some photos of houses that were for sale. When they got home Luis decided to take a shower and Sheridan went into the kitchen to help Pilar with dinner. When Luis got out of the shower he stood in the doorway to the kitchen watching unnoticed as Sheridan helped Pilar prepare dinner.
“What are you looking at Luis?” Theresa whispered from behind Luis.
“I was just watching Sheridan.”
“Why? She’s just making a salad,” Theresa said, “what’s so interesting about that?”
“I don’t know it’s just that…”
“That you were afraid Sheridan wouldn’t be happy here,” Theresa interrupted, “but she is. She loves you and she would be happy anywhere as long as she is with you.”
“I know but she is used to having maids and chauffeurs and cooks, thing that I can’t offer her.”
“She doesn’t care about all that stuff Luis, she cares about you.” Pilar turned around and saw Luis standing in the doorway. He walked into the kitchen.
“Dinner smells great Mama.” Luis went over to Sheridan and gave her a kiss on the cheek. “Can I do anything to help,” he asked.
“No Luis, this is a special dinner to celebrate your promotion. Sheridan and I have everything under control. You just have a seat,” Pilar said, “Theresita, will you please set the table.”
“Sure Mama,” Theresa answered. Theresa set the table and Sheridan, Luis, Pilar, Theresa and Miguel all ate dinner. After dinner Luis and Sheridan went to the living room to look at the pictures of the houses the realtor gave to Sheridan.
“Are you sure these are the kind of houses you want to live in?” Luis asked.
“Yeah I’m sure. What’s wrong with them?”
“Nothing,” Luis said, “it’s just that they’re not exactly the fancy mansion on the hill that you’re used to.”
“Luis, the only reason I lived in fancy place is because that’s what we had. That’s where I was told to live. But I just want a nice little house, nothing too fancy, just something where I can be happy and comfortable and start a new life.”
“Look at this one baby. I always loved this house, I can’t believe it’s for sale,” Luis said, “when I was in junior high a kid on my baseball team lived there. It’s only a couple of blocks away.”
“What does it look like inside?” Sheridan asked, but before Luis could answer Pilar came in through the kitchen.
“Sheridan you have a visitor,” Pilar said and Ethan came in from behind Pilar with a glum look on his face.
“What’s wrong Ethan?” Sheridan asked.
“Nothing’s wrong, I just wanted to come and see you,” Ethan answered.
“Don’t lie to me Ethan, I can tell something is bothering you. Now come sit down and tell me what happened.”
Ethan slumped into a chair, “I just got into an argument with Father that’s all.”
“What was it about?”
“Nothing really.”
“It was about me wasn’t it?” she asked.
Ethan nodded his head in agreement. “He wanted me to convince you to come back home.”
“Is that what you’re doing here?” Luis asked in a protective tone, “trying to talk Sheridan into going back.”
Ethan sighed and looked at Luis. “I know you hate the Cranes and I suppose now you have pretty good reason to, but I love my aunt and I only want what’s best for her. And I don’t think I’ve ever seen her happier. So no, I don’t think she should come back and that’s what I told my father.”
“Thank you for supporting me Ethan.”
“Speaking of which, I know you said you were going to look for a new place to live, do you need any money?” Ethan asked.
“I think I’ll go clean out my closet and let you two talk in private,” Luis said and he went into his bedroom.
“I don’t need any money Ethan, but thank you.”
“But Sheridan this morning I heard Grandfather yelling at Father to make sure that all your accounts were closed so you would have to come home.”
“It doesn’t matter what they do. I’ll still have money. Pilar told me this morning that my mother hid some money for me before she died. It’s a million dollars Ethan.”
“Grandfather has no idea does he?”
“No, but it doesn’t matter if he finds out. The money is in my name and there is no way he can touch it.”
“So do you like living here?” Ethan asked.
“Yeah, it’s great except for one thing, Pilar is making Luis sleep on the couch,” Sheridan laughed, “but that wont be a problem once I find my own place.”
“So does that mean you’re looking for a place big enough for more than one person,” Ethan hinted.
“Maybe,” Sheridan said and quickly changed the subject, “so how are the wedding plans going?”
“Fine I suppose,” Ethan sighed, “I just wish the bride would take some interest in planning her own wedding.”
“When is Gwen coming back from her business trip?” Sheridan asked.
“I have no idea,” Ethan said, “I guess I better get going. I’ll call you tomorrow.”
“Okay, goodnight,” Sheridan said and Ethan left. Sheridan was thirsty so she decided to get a drink. When she went into the kitchen she looked out the window and saw Ethan and Theresa talking at the end of the driveway. After a few minutes Theresa came back into the house wiping her eye like she had been crying.
“Is everything ok Theresa?” Sheridan asked.
“Um, fine.”
“What were you and Ethan talking about?”
“Just wedding stuff. Luis didn’t see us did he?” Theresa asked nervously.
“No, he’s in his room,” Sheridan answered, “Luis still doesn’t know that you work for Ivy or that you know Ethan does he.”
“No, are you going to tell him?”
“I can’t lie to Luis about this,” Sheridan answered, “I think you should tell him. Since I am staying here Ethan will be around sometimes and it would be better of you tell him yourself than if he catches you with Ethan.”
“I promise I’ll tell him soon, just not right now,” Theresa said, “I’m gonna go to my room now.”
Sheridan went back into the living room and found Luis sitting on the couch. “How’d the closet cleaning go?”
“I made a little progress,” Luis answered, “did Ethan leave?”
“Yeah, you’re not mad that he came over are you?”
“No,” Luis said, “he’s your family and if you want to see him them he can come over here whenever you want him to. Besides, I guess he’s not that bad. I mean he does really seem to care about you.
“Thanks Luis,”
Sheridan said and she kissed him on the cheek. “I’m going to go talk to Theresa.”
“What about?”
“Just girl stuff, I’ll be back in a little bit,” Sheridan said and she went to Theresa’s room. The door was open and Theresa was lying on her bed. Sheridan knocked lightly. “Can I come in?”
“Sure,” Theresa said sitting up.
“Do you want to talk about why you’re upset?” Sheridan asked as she came into the room and shut the door behind her. She sat down on the bed and asked, “it’s Ethan isn’t it?”
“Why would you say that?”
“I’ve seen the way you look at him. You’re in love with Ethan aren’t you?”

Chapter 37: Confessions of the Heart
“I uh, uh,” Theresa stammered, not knowing what to say but then she finally gave up on trying to think of something to say. “Yes,” she cried, “I’ve been in love with him for as long as I can remember. Mama used to come home from work and tell me stories about what she did with Ethan and I fell in love with him. Then when I got to know him it made me love him even more. He is so nice to me and sweet, he even tells me things he doesn’t tell Gwen. But now here I am planning his wedding to another woman.” Tears were streaming down Theresa’s cheeks and Sheridan gave him a comforting hug.
“Does Ethan know how you feel?” Sheridan asked.
“No,” Theresa said, pulling out of the hug, “please don’t tell him.”
“I won’t say anything,” Sheridan answered, “but I think you should be honest about your feelings and tell him. Look at the mess that that happened when I didn’t talk to Luis about what was going on.”
“But that was different, Luis loves you and as much as I wish Ethan loved me he doesn’t, he loves Gwen. If I tell him he’ll hate me for lying to him.”
“You’ll never know how he really feels until you tell him the truth,” Sheridan said, remembering the way she had seen Ethan looking at Theresa yesterday at her cottage. “Think about what I said and we’ll talk about this more later.” Sheridan left Theresa’s room and went into Luis’ bedroom and changed into her nightgown. Then she went back into the living room.
Luis was sitting on the couch, which he had already made into a bed with blankets and pillows, and he started laughing when Sheridan walked into the room.
She started to frown, “Why are you laughing at me?”
“I’m not laughing at you baby, it’s just your nightgown.”
“What’s wrong with it? You don’t like it?”
“Of course I like it, but look at me,” Luis said. He was wearing the burgundy silk pajama pants she had bought for him in Paris and her silk nightgown was the same color. “We match,” he laughed, and pulled Sheridan onto the couch with him. “So how many of these nightgowns do you have? Every time I see you in one it is a different color.”
Sheridan snuggled up to Luis on the couch. “Ivy got them for me for Christmas. I think I have about thirty and they are all different. Ivy has a tendency to go overboard. It took me forever to unwrap them all.” Sheridan started planting little kisses all over Luis’ face and neck. “Have I told you how sexy you look in your pajamas,” Sheridan whispered in his ear and moved her kisses down to his shoulder.
“Don’t forget that my mother is just down the hall,” Luis said. Sheridan looked up at Luis and gave him a sexy pout. “How about some cookies,” Luis offered and the smile returned to her face and they started to share their cookies.
“I wanted to talk to you about something Luis,” Sheridan said nervously.
“Is something wrong?’ Luis asked concerned.
“No nothings wrong,” Sheridan answered, “it’s just that I was thinking that you’ll be spending most of your time during the day at the police station now that you are a detective and you won’t have as much time to spend at the youth center. So I thought maybe I could help at the youth center and do some of the work there while you are working.”
‘You really want to do that?” Luis asked and Sheridan nodded yes. “I think that would be great. I know you’ll do a great job. Just when I think things can’t get any better you do something that makes me love you even more.” Luis kissed her and then sighed, “it’s getting late, I’d better get to sleep. I have to go to work in the morning.’
“Ok,” Sheridan said but she didn’t get up, “dinner was really great tonight huh.”
“Yes it was wonderful,” Luis said, “is something wrong baby, you’re acting like you don’t want to go to bed.”
“I’m just afraid that if I go to sleep I’ll have those nightmares about you getting shot again.”
“Just remember that I’ll always be right here for you of you need me. Now come over here,” Luis said and he pulled Sheridan down so she was laying on the pillow and he lay down on the couch next to her. “Close your eyes and try to go to sleep. I’ll be right here with you and when you fall asleep I’ll carry you to bed.” Luis pulled the blankets up around them and Sheridan snuggled up against his chest.
“Thank you for taking such good care of me Luis,’ Sheridan whispered in his ear as she drifted off to sleep.
Early the next morning Theresa was sitting at the kitchen table eating a bowl of cereal when there was a knock at the back door. When Theresa opened the door Hank came barging into the house.
“Is Luis up yet, I really need to talk to him?” Hank asked anxiously.
“Is something wrong Hank?” Theresa asked.
“I can’t find Sheridan. I went by her cottage to take her to breakfast and she wasn’t there and her stuff is gone. I have to find out if Luis knows where she went. So, is Luis awake?”
“No,’ Theresa answered, “he is still asleep on the couch.”
“Oh,” Hank said, “I’ll just go wake him up.”
“No Hank don’t,” Theresa called as Hank pushed open the door to the living room.
Luis yawned as his eyes adjusted to the sunlight streaming in through the windows. He and Sheridan were still curled up on the couch together. Once again he had fallen asleep with her, but she had slept soundly all night long. He looked over at the clock. It was still pretty early and he had a little bit longer before his mother would be awake.
Luis decided to wake Sheridan up the same way she had woken him up the day before and he started kissing her lightly on her cheeks and all over her neck. She moaned softly as Luis kissed her and she arched her neck up a little towards him. He continued his kissing, trailing them up her neck to her mouth and as their lips met she awoke fully and returned his kiss passionately. Then the door from the kitchen swung open and hank walked in. “Hey Luis, wake up. Have you seen……..Sheridan!”

Luis and Sheridan broke away from their kiss and looked up at Hank. “What the hell is going on here Luis? I thought you were my best friend but you stole my girl out from behind my back,” Hank yelled and he turned back towards the kitchen.
“Hank wait,” Sheridan called but Hank didn’t stop, he just kept walking and stormed out the back door slamming it behind him.
“Just let him go Sheridan. We need to give him time to cool off before we talk to him.”
“I’m really sorry about that,” Theresa said, “I tried to stop him.”
“It’s ok Theresa,” Luis said, “it’s not your fault.”
“Well you two better get up soon, Mama will be getting up in a few minutes. Oh by the way, I like the matching pajamas. That’s really cute,” Theresa laughed and she went back into the kitchen to finish her breakfast.
Luis sat up and started folding up his blanket. “I’m really sorry about that Luis,” Sheridan apologized, “it’s all my fault that Hank is mad at you.”
“Don’t be sorry. It’s not your fault that Hank is having a delusion that you’re his girlfriend. You told me yourself that from the very beginning you told Hank that you weren’t interested in having a serious relationship with him.”
“Yeah I told him that more than once, but I think I accidentally gave him the impression that I was more interested in him that I really was.”
“How?”
“You remember when I asked Hank to go to the New Year’s Eve party at the Seascape?” Sheridan asked and Luis nodded yes, “well I wanted to ask you, but I was afraid you’d say no and I thought you were in the storage closet so I asked from behind the door and I accidentally asked Hank and not you. Then after our first date I found those roses with the card asking me out but there was no signature and I thought they from you. I said yes out loud but I didn’t know that Hank was standing behind me and that he was the one that I was saying yes to. I should have just told him that I really didn’t want to go out with him but I didn’t want to hurt his feelings,” Sheridan rambled.
“I can’t believe we had such bad luck getting together, and I would have loved to be your date for New Year’s Eve. Although I guess we ended up together that night eventually. Theresa would say it was fate,” Luis laughed, “in fact I was a little jealous that you were going out with hank both of those times. But you shouldn’t blame yourself for Hank being angry with me. After you got mad at me because of that whole imposter thing I told Hank that I had no interest in you and I didn’t care if he got involved with you, but that was far from the truth. Then I lied to him about where I was going and what I was doing when I went to see you in Paris.
I should have told him that we were together as soon as I saw him but I wasn’t sure exactly what to say to him because I knew he would be upset.” Luis got up and put away the bedding from the couch.
“I feel much better now that I told you what really happened when I went out with Hank,” Sheridan said, “I want you to know how much I wanted to be with you for so long.”
“Actually I have a little confession of my own to make,” Luis said as he sat in a chair across from Sheridan.
“About Hank?” she asked.
“No, not about Hank, about you,” Luis said nervously. He was worried that she would be angry with him when she heard what he had to say. “Do you remember the day you came to the youth center and asked me abut how many hours you had left to work for your community service. The day that we danced the tango for Kay.”
“Yeah, of course I remember,” Sheridan said, “I loved dancing with you and that was when you asked me out on our first date.
“Well, when I told you that you had twenty hours left to work it wasn’t true. You only had three hours left to work,” Luis confessed.
“I don’t believe it, you lied about my hours,” Sheridan said in surprise, “why did you make me work more hours?”
“I thought that I would never get to see you after you finished your hours, so I said you had twenty left so you would have to keep coming to the youth center and I would have a reason to see you.”
Sheridan smiled brightly, “I thought I had less than ten hours to go and I was really happy when you said it was twenty because I really wanted to be able to spend some more time with you.”
Luis moved back over to the couch and sat next to Sheridan. “I’m sorry I lied to you and made you work all those extra hours.”
“It’s ok Luis, I didn’t mind,” Sheridan said, happy to know that he had wanted to spend time with her as much as she had wanted to be with him, and she pulled him into a long soft kiss.
I’d better go get in the shower, I have to leave for work soon,” Luis said and he reluctantly left Sheridan alone on the couch and went into the bathroom. When Luis got out of the shower he quickly dressed in his uniform and went into the kitchen. He found Sheridan sitting at the kitchen table. She had prepared him a breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon and toast.
“Wow, this looks delicious,” Luis said and he kissed Sheridan on the cheek and sat down at the table, “but you didn’t have to make me breakfast.”
“I know, but I wanted to. It’s your first day as a detective and I want you to have a good breakfast before you go to work,” Sheridan said.
“Well it’s delicious baby, thank you,” Luis said. “So what are you planning on doing today?”
“I was thinking about going to the youth center and doing some of the paper work for the grants if that’s ok with you. And I told Ethan I would meet him for coffee after he gets done with his meetings. I should be home around dinner time.”
“Well then I guess I’ll see you at dinner then. If you have any questions about stuff at the youth center just call me at the station. I have to go to work now. I love you baby,” Luis said and he gave Sheridan a soft goodbye kiss.
“I love you too Luis. Have a good day,” Sheridan called as Luis walked out the door.
~~~~ Later that evening ~~~~
Sheridan turned the key that Luis had given her to open the door to the Lopez-Fitzgerald house. As soon as she walked into the house she smelled a wonderful scent wafting through the air from the kitchen. Luis came through the kitchen door into the living room.
“Hello beautiful. How was your day?” Luis asked as he greeted Sheridan with a kiss.
“It was great. How was your first day as a detective?”
“Wonderful, except I missed you,” Luis said and he pulled Sheridan into a passionate kiss. They pulled apart when Sheridan’s stomach growled.
Sheridan giggled, “I’m starving. What is Pilar cooking that smells so delicious?”
“Actually Mama isn’t here, she went to visit my aunt and she won’t be back until tomorrow afternoon. I’m cooking dinner for us.” Luis led Sheridan into the kitchen. The table was set for two and decorated with candles and flowers.
“Isn’t anyone else having dinner with us?”
“Nope, Theresa is spending the night at Whitney’s again and Miguel is having dinner at the Bennett’s with Charity, so it’s just the two of us.” Sheridan sat down at the table and Luis put a plate full of food in front of her. She looked at the food with a look of surprise on her face.
“Luis these are all my favorite foods!”
“I know, I lost that bet in Paris remember. I was supposed to cook you all your favorite foods.”
“I had forgotten,” Sheridan said, “but how did you know what I like?”
“I just asked Mama,” Luis said and he and Sheridan enjoyed their romantic dinner. After dinner Luis washed the dishes and Sheridan sat on the counter next to the sink and dried. As Luis finished washing the last dish the phone rang. He handed the dish to Sheridan and went to answer the phone. When Luis got off the phone he walked over to Sheridan who was still sitting on the counter.
“Who was that?” she asked.
“That was Miguel. He and Charity are going to a late movie so he won’t be home until late.”
“So that means we have the house all to ourselves for a while huh,” Sheridan said seductively as she took Luis’ hands in hers and pulled him closer to her.
“Uh huh,” Luis answered and he started kissing her neck.
Sheridan wrapped her legs around Luis’ waist and ran her fingers through his thick hair. “I’ve never made love to a detective before,” Sheridan whispered in his ear. Luis looked up into her eyes and saw a desire in them that ran deep into her soul. They began kissing passionately and Luis picked Sheridan up off the counter and carried her to his bedroom.
Chapter 39: The Jersey
Sheridan and Luis lay in Luis’ bed wrapped in each other’s arms. Sheridan sighed, “I wish we could stay like this forever.”
“Me too, but it’s almost time for Miguel to get home from the movies,” Luis said, “I’d better get out of here before he gets here.” Luis reluctantly got out of bed and pulled on his boxers.
“I think I’m going to read for a while,” Sheridan said. She sat up with the sheet draped across her chest. “Will you come back in a little bit and say goodnight to me?”
“Of course I will,” Luis said and he kissed Sheridan on the forehead. “I’ll be back soon.” After Luis had left the room Sheridan slid out of bed and picked up Luis’ police shirt off the chair. She put on his shirt and sank into the chair. Sheridan breathed deeply to inhale Luis’ scent that was left on the shirt. She opened her book and began to read, but her mind quickly drifted off to thoughts of Luis.
As soon as Luis had pulled his blankets and pillows out of the hall closet Miguel came in the front door. “Hey little brother, how was the movie?”
“It was ok. Where’s Sheridan?” Miguel asked.
“She’s in my room reading.”
“How’d dinner go? Theresa told me you were making a special romantic dinner for Sheridan since no one was going to be home. That’s why I decided to take Charity to the movies, to give you two some more time alone.”
“Thanks Miguel, and dinner went fine,” Luis said.
“From the grin plastered on your face I’d say that tonight’s activities were more than just fine,” Miguel teased.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Good night Luis,” Miguel laughed as he walked down the hall to his bedroom.
When Luis walked back into his bedroom Sheridan was standing at the window, looking up at the night sky. Luis just stood there staring at her until she turned around. “Luis, why are you staring at me?”
“You look so sexy wearing my shirt I can’t help myself,” Luis said and he wrapped his arms around her. “You are making it so hard for me to resist you.”
“I wish you didn’t have to resist,” Sheridan whispered as she kissed his ear.
“So do I, but Miguel is home,” Luis said, “I just came back to say goodnight. Are you planning on sleeping in my shirt?”
“Yeah, it smells like you,” Sheridan said, “I don’t know how I’m going to get to sleep without you.”
“Actually I had an idea that I think will help you sleep better,” Luis said, you get in bed.” Sheridan climbed under the covers and Luis went over to the closet and pulled something from the top shelf and gave it to Sheridan. It was an old brown teddy bear. “I thought maybe he could keep my place warm for me since I can’t be in here with you.”
“He’s so cute, what’s his name?”
“His name is Dexter and Mama said I used to sleep with him every night when I was a little kid. And I’m sure he’ll take good care of you tonight.”
“Thanks Luis, I don’t know what I ever did to deserve you.”
“I could say the same thing,” Luis said and he gave Sheridan a goodnight kiss and left to sleep on the couch.
Sheridan woke the next morning with a smile on her face. She had slept all night long with no nightmares, only sweet dreams of Luis. Sheridan sat Dexter the teddy bear on the pillow and slid out of bed. She pulled her robe on over Luis’ police shirt and tied it securely around her waist. Sheridan went into the kitchen.
Good morning Miguel,” Sheridan said, “where’s Luis?”
“Good morning Sheridan. Luis went running.”
“Why didn’t he wake me up? I would’ve gone with him.”
“I think he just wanted to let you get some more sleep.”
“Oh,” Sheridan said, “I hope I didn’t disturb you the other night when I had those nightmares.”
“No, you didn’t bother me,” Miguel laughed, “Mama says I could sleep through a hurricane.”
Sheridan noticed a couple of boxes full of stuff sitting by the back door. “What’s in the boxes?” she asked Miguel.
“Some stuff Luis took out of his closet to make room for you,” Miguel answered.
Sheridan looked in the top of one of the boxes and picked up a basketball jersey. “Is this from when Luis played in high school?”
“Yep, he was the captain of the Harmony High Basketball team. You know, it’s a good thing Hank didn’t decide to burst in this morning. He’d really be jealous if he saw you with that.” “Why?”
“Uh, never mind, I don’t think I should say anything.”
“What is it Miguel?”
“I don’t think Luis would want me to tell you.”
“If it’s about me I have a right to know,” Sheridan said.
“Well a while back I heard Hank saying something to Luis about when they were in high school,” Miguel said, “apparently all the guys on the basketball team, except for Luis because he hated the Cranes, used to joke that if you ever came back to Harmony, well, uh, are you sure you want to know this?”
“Yes I’m sure,” Sheridan answered, “don’t worry, whatever it is I won’t get upset.”
“They used to joke about which one of them would be the first to, uh, see you wearing nothing but their basketball jersey.”
Sheridan blushed, “they really talked about me like that in high school? But they didn’t even know me.”
“I guess they had seen your picture in magazines and the newspaper and everybody in Harmony knows who the Cranes are,” Miguel said, “it was after you had first gone out with Hank that I heard him tell Luis that he was finally going to be the one to win.”
“I guess Hank’s more delusional than I thought,” Sheridan said sarcastically and Miguel tried not to laugh. “Hey Miguel, do you have any film left in that Polaroid camera you and Charity were using the other day?”
“Yeah, there should be a few pictures left.”
“Do you mind if I use it?”
“No, go ahead, it’s on the coffee table in the living room,” Miguel said, “well, I’m going over to Charity’s. I’ll see you later.” Miguel left and Sheridan took Luis’ basketball jersey and Miguel’s Polaroid camera into the bedroom with her.
Chapter 40: Surprise for Lunch
Sheridan walked back into the kitchen just as Luis was coming in the back door and she quickly hid something behind her back.
“Hey, you’re up,” Luis said, “how did you sleep?”
“I slept great, but it would have been better with you there. How was your run?”
“It was good. I thought about waking you up to see if you wanted to come with me but you were sleeping so peacefully that I didn’t want to wake you and I thought you could use some more rest.”
“That’s ok, but I want to go with you next time.”
“I promise,” Luis said, “I better take a quick shower and get ready for work. I’d kiss you but I’m all sweaty.”
“Well then you’ll just have to make it up to me when you get out of the shower,” Sheridan teased.
“You can count on it.”
Once Luis left the room Sheridan took some food out of the refrigerator and packed a lunch for Luis. When she was done putting the food into the bag Sheridan picked up what she had been hiding from Luis, a Polaroid photo, and put it into the bag.
“Ok, I’m ready for that kiss now,” Luis said as he came back into the kitchen and he grabbed Sheridan and pulled her into a passionate kiss. Luis pulled away from Sheridan’s moist lips and trailed kisses across her neck.
Sheridan moaned in delight and Luis slid his hands down Sheridan’s arms. When he reached her left hand he laced his fingers with hers and his kisses returned to her lips once more. His other hand continued to trail down her arm, his fingers absorbing the feel of her silky skin, but when his fingers reached her hand he felt something in it. He tore himself away from Sheridan and looked down at what she was holding. Luis spoke breathlessly, “What’s in the bag?”
“I made your lunch for you to take to work,” Sheridan answered quietly, still trying to compose herself after such a fiery kiss.
“Thank you baby. So what did you make me?” Luis asked as he tried to take the bag from her hand.
“No you don’t,” Sheridan said pulling the bag away, “I put a special surprise in there for you, but I want you to promise that you won’t look at it until lunch.”
“Do I at least get a hint?”
“No, but I think you’ll like it,” Sheridan said giving Luis a teasing kiss.
“Oops, sorry,” Theresa said as she walked in the back door. “I didn’t mean to interrupt.”
“That’s ok,” Luis said, “how come you’re back from Whitney’s so early?”
“Whit had to go to an early tennis practice and I have a bunch of things I need to get done today. I was actually hoping I could borrow your car Luis,” Theresa asked.
“Sorry, but I have to work today and I’m going to need my car.”
“That’s ok Luis, I’ll just take the bus.”
“Why don’t you take my car,” Sheridan offered.
“Really, are you sure?” Theresa asked, excited at the thought of driving Sheridan’s red convertible around town.
“Sure, as long as Luis doesn’t mind dropping me off at the youth center and picking me up after work.”
“Of course I don’t mind,” Luis said.
“Ok then, here are the keys Theresa. Just remember, don’t speed or Luis will throw you in jail,” Sheridan laughed and she and Luis left.
It was noon and Luis had been waiting anxiously all day for lunchtime to arrive. He couldn’t keep his mind from wondering what the surprise was that Sheridan had packed into his lunch. Sam came into the break room and sat down next to Luis just as he was about to open the bag.
“You must be starving Luis,” Sam said, “the way you sprinted from your desk in here to eat your lunch.”
“Actually Sheridan said she put some kind of surprise in my lunch but she made me promise not to look at it until lunch.”
“Whenever Grace says there is a surprise in my lunch it’s usually a piece of that horrible tomato soup cake,” Sam said, shuddering at the thought.
Luis reached inside the bag and took out all the food until he came upon his surprise. Luis pulled out the Polaroid and his jaw dropped when he looked at the picture.
Chapter 41: The Photo
Hank walked into the youth center not expecting to find anyone there since there were no cars in the parking lot and it was the middle of a school day, but the lights were on in Luis office.
“Hey Luis,” Hank called out as he walked into the office, “oh Sheridan, I didn’t expect to see you here. What a pleasant surprise.”
“Hi Hank.”
“Why are you at the youth center?”
“Since Luis is going to be working mostly during the day at the station now that he was promoted to detective I am going to be doing some of the work at the youth center.”
“But Sheridan, you completed your community service. Why is Luis still making you work here?”
“He isn’t making me work here Hank,” Sheridan said, “I want to. In fact it was my idea. I like helping the kids and I have plenty of spare time.”
“But you should be able to spend your time having fun and being pampered, not stuck in here working all day. I know,” Hank said, “why don’t you let me take my best girl out to lunch.”
“No thank you Hank. I have a lot of work to do.”
“Please Sheridan, we haven’t had a chance to spend any quality time together since you came home form Paris.”
“Look Hank, I’ve been wanting to talk to you since I got back home.”
“If this is about Luis, don’t worry about it. I can handle a little competition,” Hank said, “just give me a chance and I’ll show you how happy I can make you.”
“Hank the reason I came back to Harmony is to be with Luis. I’m in love with him.”
“But I thought we had something Sheridan.”
“I told you from the beginning that I wasn’t interested in having a serious relationship with you.”
“I know you said that at first, but then you asked me out for New Years Eve and then you went out with me again right after your date with Luis. I thought you wanted to be with me.”
“I’m sorry Hank. But when I asked you out for New Years Eve and when you gave me the flowers and I said I’d go out with you, well, both times I thought I was talking to Luis. I didn’t realize it was you until it was too late. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you the truth sooner, but I didn’t want to hurt your feelings.”
Hank scowled at Sheridan. “You and Luis will never last. You are both too different. You come from different worlds. You’ll never be happy with him. He can’t give you the life you deserve; the kind of life you are used to. But don’t worry, when it ends I’ll be here waiting for you,” Hank said gruffly and he stormed out of the youth center.
“What is it Luis?” Sam asked.
Luis didn’t answer; he just stared at the picture. In the photo Sheridan was wearing nothing but Luis’ basketball jersey. Luis had grown considerably after high school and the jersey was a little small. It came down to just past Sheridan’s underwear and was tight across her chest. She was lying on her side on Luis’ bed with one arm holding her head up and a basketball was resting on her hip underneath her other arm.
On the bottom of the picture Sheridan had written:
‘How about a rematch? ♥ S’
“Don’t keep me in suspense any longer,” Sam said and he grabbed the picture. “Oh my. Luis you are a lucky man.”
“Oh yeah, what’s so lucky about him?” Hank growled as he walked up behind Sam and snatched the picture from him. Hank took one look at the picture and the anger on his face increased. He threw the photo on the floor and he stomped out of the room.
“Hank wait,” Luis called, “Hank I want to talk to you.”
“Just let him go Luis,” Sam said, “he is being irrational. Hank’s always been a sore loser, especially when it comes to you. I’m sure he’ll get over it eventually.” Sam picked the photo up off the floor and handed it to Luis. “Don’t let Hank spoil your good mood. You and Sheridan belong together. I don’t think I have ever seen you this happy before. After everything that you and Sheridan have been through you deserve to be happy.”
Luis ate his lunch and food never tasted so good to him because with every bite he took he thought of how sexy Sheridan looked in that picture. After lunch he continued working the rest of his shift but his mind kept wandering off to thoughts of Sheridan. Several times throughout the afternoon he had pulled the picture out of his desk drawer to look at it. When there was about half an hour left on his shift Sam went over to Luis’ desk.
“Why don’t you go ahead and take off Luis,” Sam said.
“But I still have half an hour left on my shift,” Luis protested.
“I know, but you aren’t really getting much work done anyway since you keep thinking about Sheridan, so just go ahead and go see her.”
“Thanks Sam,” Luis said and he raced out of the station and headed over to the youth center. The parking lot at the youth center was empty when Luis pulled up. The youth center had just closed and Sheridan was the only one who was still there. Luis walked in and everything was quiet but he could hear water running in the girl’s locker room. Sheridan was taking a shower.
‘I think it’s my turn to surprise Sheridan,’ Luis thought. He locked the front door to the youth center and quietly crept into the girl’s locker room.
Chapter 42: The Shower
Luis took off all his clothes as silently as he could and laid them down on a bench. He crept through the locker room into the shower area. There was a small space between the shower curtain and the wall of the shower stall and Luis could see Sheridan standing under the spray of warm water. Her back was to him so she didn’t see him standing there. Luis just watched, mesmerized as drops of water ran down her body. To him she was a goddess, perfect in every way, and he couldn’t get enough of her.
The warm water rained across Sheridan’s face washing away some of the tension she still felt from Hank’s visit earlier in the day. She couldn’t stop thinking about all the anger she heard in Hank’s voice when he said she and Luis would never last. Somewhere deep inside she had those fears, that they were too different, but she had faith that they could overcome the obstacles they would be faced with.
Sheridan was afraid that she would be responsible for Luis losing his best friend though. Hank was angry that she wanted to be with Luis and not with him and Sheridan was worried that Hank’s anger would end his and Luis’ friendship. Sheridan turned around to let the water gently massage her back. As she turned she saw an arm move outside the shower curtain. Sheridan screamed and Luis yanked the shower curtain open.
“Sheridan what’s wrong?” Luis asked, “are you ok?”
“Oh my god, Luis,” Sheridan wrapped her arms around Luis’ neck and hugged him as tight as she could, instantly soaking him as the water dripped off her body onto his.
“What happened Baby? Why did you scream?”
“I saw your arm move outside the shower, but I didn’t know that it was you. What are you doing here so early? I thought you’d still be at work.”
“I got off a little early and I thought I’d surprise you,” Luis said.
“We’ll you certainly surprised me, you scared the hell out of me.”
“I’m sorry Baby. I didn’t mean to scare you,” Luis apologized, “why are you taking a shower anyway?” “I was helping some of the younger kids paint in the art room and one of them accidentally got paint in my hair,” Sheridan answered. She backed away from Luis slightly and looked down at his naked body. She raised her eyebrows and asked, “so exactly what kind of surprise did you have in mind Detective Lopez-Fitzgerald?”
Luis grinned, “I thought I’d take you up on that rematch.”
“Oh, so you want to go work up a sweat on the basketball court then,” Sheridan teased. “I definitely plan on working up a sweat, but it has nothing to do with basketball.” Luis put hands on Sheridan’s hips and began kissing her gently as he backed her up against the shower wall. As their kisses intensified Luis slid his hands up her body into her damp hair. Sheridan broke their burning kiss.
“What if someone comes in?” she asked breathlessly.
“I locked the door,” Luis whispered as he nibbled on her earlobe. Returning her attention to Luis Sheridan began kissing his chest and running her hands up and down his back as the warm water from the shower washed over them. Luis lifted Sheridan’s face up until he caught her eyes in his gaze. He saw a desire in them that burned with a fiery intensity.
“I love you so much,” Luis said in a husky whisper and he began kissing her neck.
Sheridan leaned her head back and moaned, “oh Luis, I love you too.” Luis moved down her neck and forged a trail of kisses across her body. As Luis’ mouth completed its journey and found it’s way back to Sheridan’s waiting lips their desire for each other completely engulfed them.
Chapter 43: Completely Clean
br>
Luis grinned at Sheridan; “you never cease to amaze me Baby.”
“I try my best,” Sheridan laughed.
“Come here,” Luis said and he pulled Sheridan back into the spray of warm water. He picked up the soap, rubbed it through his hands into a lather and ran his hands over every inch of Sheridan’s body. Then he squeezed some shampoo into his hands and washed her hair. Sheridan did the same to Luis, thoroughly washing every inch of his body and once they were both completely clean Sheridan turned off the water and Luis pulled the shower curtain open.
He stepped out and grabbed a towel, running it quickly across his head and then fastening it securely around his waist. Sheridan stepped out of the shower and Luis grabbed another towel and started drying her off. He ran the towel down her arm planting soft kisses along her skin as it was dried. He continued this process until her entire body was dry. Luis dropped the towel to the floor as Sheridan wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him intensely.
She ran her fingers down his still damp back and tugged at the towel around his waist until it fell to the floor. Sheridan moved in closer to Luis, eliminating any space that remained between their bodies, but Luis broke off their kiss and looked down into her eyes. They were so full of passion and desire that it made him regret even more what he was about to say.
“As much as I like where this is headed baby, we can’t.”
Sheridan gave Luis a sexy pout, “and why not?”
“Because I told Mama that I’d pick her up after she got off work and I don’t like to make her wait,” Luis said, “I’m sorry.”
“That’s ok,” Sheridan said and she flashed Luis a sexy smile, “I’ll just have to think of a way that you can make it up to me.”
Luis picked his clothes up off the bench and proceeded to put his clothes on, but he never broke his gaze from Sheridan. She had turned her back to him and Luis watched her intently as she dressed. “I almost forgot to tell you,” Sheridan said and she turned around to face Luis and caught him watching her. A smile played across her lips. “Theresa called and wanted me to tell you that she won’t be home for dinner tonight. She’s having dinner at the Russell’s because she and Whitney are working on a school project.”
Luis gave Sheridan a puzzled look. “Why did she call you and not me?”
“Because she took my car remember. She just wanted to make sure that it was ok for her to keep my car until she gets home form Whitney’s.”
“Oh, well I guess it’s better that she won’t home tonight,” Luis said, “I invited someone over for dinner.”
“Who?”
“Ethan was at the station today to see Sam about something for the police board and I thought that you might like to see him so I asked him to come for dinner.”
“Oh Luis, “ Sheridan said enthusiastically, “thank you. I know how much you hate my family.”
“I know I’ve said before that I hate all the Cranes,” Luis began, “but I love you and you are a Crane. I know it’s important to you to have Ethan in your life and you keep telling me what a good person he is so I suppose I could give him a chance.”
“How did you get to be so wonderful,” Sheridan said and she kissed Luis on the cheek. “I’m sure that once you get to know Ethan you’ll really like him.”
“We’ll see,” Luis said, “are you ready to go?”
“Yeah, just let me grab my purse.” Sheridan picked up her purse and turned back to Luis. “Oh by the way, I just want you to know that was the best shower I’ve ever had.”
Luis grinned at Sheridan and they left the youth center hand in hand.
A short time later at the Lopez-Fitzgerald house Sheridan and Luis were playing basketball in the backyard. “Something happened at the youth center today,” Sheridan said bouncing the ball slowly. “Hank came by.” “When?” “About 11:30.” Luis was relieved that it had been before Hank had been at the station. “What did he want?” He wanted me to go out to lunch with him,” Sheridan sighed, “I told him I didn’t want to go and that I was in love with you and I didn’t want to go out with him anymore. I tried to explain about the mix-ups with the flowers and New Years Eve and he got really mad. He started yelling at me that we would never be happy and he stormed off.”
“That explains why he was already upset.” “You saw him too?” Sheridan asked.
“Yeah, he came to the station while Sam and I were having lunch. Probably right after he left the youth center,” Luis said, “he saw the picture of you and he left. He wouldn’t even talk to me.”
“I’m sorry. I guess taking that picture wasn’t such a good idea. I never meant to rub it in Hank’s face that he lost. You’re losing your best friend and it’s all because of me.”
“None of this is your fault. If Hank is really my friend then he’ll get over it and be happy for us and if he can’t do that then that’s his own problem.”
“But seeing me wearing your jersey in that picture must have been the last straw for him, since he was apparently so sure that he was going to win that stupid high school bet.”
“You are not a prize to be won, especially not like that. How did you know about that anyway?”
“I have my sources.”
“Miguel told you.”
“Okay Detective, but he didn’t want to tell me. I found the jersey in that box of stuff from your closet and he said that Hank would be mad if he saw me with it and I made him tell me why. So did you like the picture?” “I loved it,” Luis said. He walked around behind Sheridan and slipped his arms around her waist. “I hardly got any work done after lunch today because I kept thinking about you. In fact, seeing you with that basketball is making me have some good thoughts right now.” Luis started kissing the back of Sheridan’s neck causing shivers to run up and down her spine. Sheridan turned around to face Luis when they were interrupted.
“Hey Sheridan,” Ethan said glumly as he walked up the driveway.
Sheridan tossed the ball to Luis and gave Ethan a hug.
“What’s wrong?”
“Father’s home from his business trip,” Ethan answered.
“Did you two get into a fight?”
“Not exactly, but every time I see him it makes me angry because I think about how he hit you. We can’t even have a conversation anymore. He always acts like such jerk and he only cares about himself and the mighty Crane Empire. Before I left he was ranting and raving about you and Luis and how you betrayed the family.”
“What else did he say?” Sheridan asked.
“Oh I’m sure it’s nothing you haven’t heard before. You know Father, he tends to repeat himself.” Ethan sighed, “do you mind if I stay at your cottage for a while?”
“Of course, you can stay there as long as you want.”
“If you don’t want to be around Julian why don’t you just move off the estate?” Luis asked.
“I don’t’ want to leave Mother there all by herself. Father’s been drinking a lot more and he and Mother always fought before, but after what happened with you I’m afraid that she might push him too far.”
“I’m sorry Ethan.”
“It’s not your fault Sheridan. But enough of all this depressing stuff. If anything can cheer me up it’s Pilar's cooking and whatever it is it smells great.”
“There’s still a few more minutes left until dinner’s ready,” Sheridan said, “you guys stay out here and play. I’m going to see if Pilar needs any help.”
“So Ethan do you play basketball?” Luis asked.
“Yeah sometimes,” Ethan laughed, “but you better watch out because Sheridan taught me everything I know.”
“Funny,” Luis said and he tossed the ball to Ethan. They played a friendly game until Sheridan came back outside.
“Who’s winning?” she asked.
“Actually it’s tied,” Luis said.
“Well I guess you’ll have to continue this game another time because dinner is ready.”
“Great, I’m starving,” Ethan said and he went into the house leaving Sheridan and Luis outside alone.
“So how did it go?”
“I suppose he’s ok,” Luis said.
“See, I told you.”
Sheridan and Luis went inside and had a nice dinner with Ethan and Pilar. After dinner Ethan went home, Luis went to sleep on the couch and Sheridan was lying in Luis’ bed reading a book. When Theresa got home she tiptoed through the living room so she wouldn’t wake Luis. She saw the light under the door to Luis’ room and she k
“Is something wrong?” Theresa asked.
“No actually something good happened. Luis invited Ethan over for dinner tonight.”
“You’re kidding!” Theresa said excitedly, “I can’t believe I wasn’t home. Did they get along?”
“Uh huh, they played basketball and we had dinner. Luis said that Ethan is ‘ok’.”
“This is great. Now Ethan and Luis will be friends and he won’t be mad at me for being friends with Ethan.”
“Don’t get too excited,” Sheridan said, “they’re not quite friends yet. And Luis did say that he was glad you wouldn’t be home for dinner. But I think you need to tell Luis about Ethan and Ivy very soon, before he catches you together or he asks me about it. The longer you wait the worse it will be for all of us.”
“Ok, I promise I’ll tell him soon. I just want to talk to Ethan about it first and give him a warning in case Luis gets really upset,” Theresa said and she got up to leave, “Goodnight Sheridan.”
“Goodnight Theresa.”
Chapter 44: On the Run
A couple days later Sheridan woke up early. She stretched as she climbed out of bed. She put on her running clothes and brushed her hair before leaving the bedroom. Sheridan went into the living room and Luis was still asleep on the couch. She kneeled down next to him.
“Wake up sleepyhead,” she whispered in his ear, “it’s time to wake up.” Luis stirred a little bit but he didn’t wake up. Sheridan stood up a little so she was leaning over Luis and she kissed him lightly on the lips. “Wake up,” she said again, “it’s time to go running.” Luis suddenly grabbed Sheridan and pulled her down on top of him. He slid his arms around her body, holding her tightly so her couldn’t get up.
“Wouldn’t you rather just lay down here with me?”
“No, I want to go running and you said you wanted to go with me, so get your lazy butt up.”
“Okay, okay, I’m up,” Luis said. He sat up pulling Sheridan up with him and went to get dressed. When Luis came back into the living room Sheridan was on the floor stretching and Luis just stood there and stared at her.
Sheridan looked up and noticed Luis watching her. “What?” she asked.
“Nothing. I was just admiring your flexibility,” Luis said raising his eyebrows playfully at her.
Sheridan pulled herself up off the floor. “Come on, let’s go,” she said and she grabbed Luis’ arm and pulled him out the door.
“You certainly are in a hurry to go running this morning,” Luis said, “how come?”
“I just feel like running that’s all.”
“I think there’s more to it than that,” Luis said, but Sheridan didn’t answer. She just picked up the pace. They ran through the neighborhood, through Lighthouse Park, and then towards downtown Harmony.
“I think we better start back home. I have to get ready for work,” Luis told Sheridan.
“Ok,” she said and she ran faster moving ahead of Luis.
“Sheridan you’re going the wrong way,” Luis called but Sheridan didn’t stop. Luis tried to catch up to her but every time he got close to her she sped up again.
“Sheridan if we don’t get home I’m going to be late for work.” She finally slowed down enough to let Luis catch her. He grabbed her hand and held on so she couldn’t get away again and they slowed their pace to a jog. Sheridan looked up at Luis with a mischievous grin on her face.
“What are you up to?” Luis asked, realizing that Sheridan knew exactly where she was going. “Where are we going?”
“The youth center.”
“Why are we going there? I have to get home and get ready for work.”
“I thought you could just get ready at the youth center.”
“But my uniform is at home.”
“Actually it’s at the youth center. Pilar asked me to pick it up at the cleaners yesterday since I was going to be over there anyway and I left it there.”
“On purpose?” Luis asked.
“Well,” Sheridan began as they stopped at the corner and waited for the light to change, “it is still early and the youth center is closed. And I figured we would both need a nice long shower after all this running,” Sheridan wrapped her arms around Luis’ neck and looked into his eyes. “And I seem to recall that you have something to make up to me from the other day.”
“What am I going to do with you,” Luis laughed.
“I have a few ideas,” Sheridan teased. The light changed and Luis took Sheridan’s hand and they crossed the street towards the youth center.
“So that’s why you were so eager to go running this morning.” Sheridan didn’t answer; she just gave Luis a sexy grin. “So are we planning on running home after work too, because neither one of us has a car.”
“Actually I remembered that you said you have to be in court most of the morning so you won’t need you car until the afternoon. Theresa only has a half-day at school today and she is meeting me here for lunch and shopping, so I told her to take your car to school and she is going to drop it off at the station. Then she and I are going to have lunch at the Book Café and walk around to shop at the stores by there.”
“The case I have to testify in got pushed to the afternoon, but I have to do paperwork all morning anyway so I won’t need my car at all. Why don’t you and Theresa just keep my car so you don’t have to walk around with all your stuff while you are shopping and then you can pick me up after work.”
Sheridan took out her keys and opened the door to the youth center. They went inside and locked the door behind them. Sheridan led Luis into the girls’ locker room.
“I think I’m spending way too much time in here,” Luis laughed. He looked over by the lockers and saw his uniform hanging up along with his shoes. Next to that was Sheridan’s dress with matching shoes and a matching purse. “Exactly how long have you been masterminding this little seduction plan of yours baby?”
“Luis,” Sheridan purred as she wrapped her arms around his neck, “why don’t you save those great detective skills until you get to work. Right now I plan to take full advantage of some of your other special skills.”
Luis didn’t need to be told twice. He engaged Sheridan in an explosive kiss. As their passions ignited Luis began kissing her neck vigorously.
“I had a dream kind of like this once,” Sheridan whispered, “only we were in the men’s locker room and you were wearing a lot less clothing.”
Luis pulled back from Sheridan, took off his shirt and threw it on the floor. “I plan on making all your dreams come true,” he said and he proceeded to bring her fantasy to life.
Chapter 45: Hunger
Luis rushed into the station and grabbed a cup of coffee before he sat down at his desk.
“Running a little late huh?” Sam said.
“Yeah,” Luis answered taking a sip of coffee.
“You look kind of tired Luis. I guess Sheridan really wore you out this morning.”
Luis choked on his coffee, “excuse me?”
I saw you two run by my house this morning.”
“Oh right. Well Sheridan has lots of energy,” Luis smiled thinking about the reason he was late. Luis sat at his desk filling out paperwork until it was almost lunchtime.
“Hey Luis, you want to go grab a bite at the Book Café?” Sam asked.
“Sure,” Luis replied, thinking that they might run into Sheridan and Theresa there. But as soon as they got up to leave a deliveryman from a Chinese restaurant walked into the station.
“I’m looking for Detective Lopez-Fitzgerald,” the deliveryman said.
“That’s me, but I didn’t order any food.”
“Ms. Crane ordered it for you. She wanted me to give you this too,” he handed an envelope to Luis, “where should I put this?”
“Just sit it on the table,” Luis said and the deliveryman sat the large box full of assorted dishes of Chinese food on the table. “How much do I owe you?”
“Nothing, Ms. Crane took care of everything, including the tip,” the deliveryman said and he left.
Luis opened the card. It read:
‘I thought you might have worked up a pretty big appetite this morning. Enjoy your lunch. Love S’
Luis picked up the phone and called the youth center.
Sheridan answered the phone, “Harmony Youth Center.”
“Hi baby,” Luis said, “I just wanted to thank you for lunch.”
“You’re welcome. I thought you might be kind of hungry because I’m starving. I wish Theresa would hurry up and get here so we can go eat.”
“I definitely worked up an appetite, but I’m not that hungry. You ordered enough food to feed the entire force.”
“I guess I went a little overboard, but I was in such a good mood and I thought you might want to share.”
“That was sweet of you baby. In fact I think everyone can smell the food because they are all wandering over here.”
“I knew it was a good idea,” Sheridan said.
“Yes it was. In fact, I have a good idea of my own.”
“Oh really, what’s that?”
“I want to take you out on a date tonight. We haven’t gone out since we got home from Paris.”
“That sounds great Luis. What did you have in mind?”
“I thought that after you pick me up from work we could go to the Lobster Shack and then maybe take a walk on the beach,” Luis said, “but I better go now before the guys eat all my food. I love you Baby.”
“I love you too,” Sheridan said and she hung up the phone.
“I certainly hope that was my brother you were talking to,” Theresa teased form the doorway.
“Oh Theresa,” Sheridan gasped, “I didn’t hear you come in. Yeah, that was Luis. He wants to take me to the Lobster Shack after work tonight. So are you ready to go? I’m starving.”
“Just give me a sec I have to go to the bathroom.”
While she waited for Theresa, Sheridan turned around in the high back desk chair to look over some papers that were spread out on the table behind the desk.
Beth walked through the youth center parking lot. She was expecting to find Luis there because his car was the only one in the parking lot.
Sheridan had called Theresa before she left for school to let her know to come straight to the youth center instead of dropping Luis’ car off at the station. She was going to have Theresa drive her car instead of Luis’ but Sheridan had the keys with her so Theresa had to take Luis’ car anyway.
When Beth walked into Luis’ office at the youth center his chair was turned around backwards. She couldn’t see who was in it, but she knew someone was because it moved slightly and she thought it was Luis.
“Hi Luis.” Beth said, “I wanted to talk to you about Sheridan.” Sheridan started to turn around to let Beth know she wasn’t Luis, but she stopped when she heard her name. “I know you and Sheridan seem to have gotten over your differences and grown closer lately, but she is just using you. She is a Crane and you know how the Cranes are. They are always trying to take everything away from us regular people.
I’ve seen the way Sheridan’s been prancing around here acting like she’s running the youth center now. She doesn’t really care about you, she just wants to take the youth center away from you.” Sheridan clinched her hands on the arms of the chair trying to keep herself from exploding while Beth continued to rant on to ‘Luis’. “Why don’t you get rid of Sheridan and I’ll help you run the youth center. I’ll do anything you want me to. I could do a much better job than she could.”
Sheridan slowly turned the chair around. “Oh you think so do you.”
Beth was shocked when she saw that she had been talking to Sheridan. “Where, where’s Luis,” she stammered. “I thought he was here.” “Clearly you didn’t think you were talking to me,” Sheridan said, “Luis is working, but I’m sure if you really fell the need to trash me to him you can go see him at the station.” Sheridan sighed, “why did you act like you were my friend Beth. From what you just said you clearly don’t like me. What did I do to make you hate me?”
“You’re trying to steal Luis from me,” Beth wined, “you act all sweet and innocent with Luis, but I know you’re just a spoiled rich bitch who thinks she can have what ever and whoever she wants. But you don’t know how to please a man like Luis, not the way I do. Luis doesn’t care about your money and he hates your entire family and it won’t be long before he’ll go back to hating you too and then he’ll come back to me where he belongs.”
“You’re delusional,” Theresa laughed form the doorway, “Luis is never going to come back to you Beth. When are you just going to accept it and move on? And if you knew how to please Luis he never would have dumped you. Luis didn’t want you then, he doesn’t want you now, and he won’t want you ever! The only woman my brother wants to be with is Sheridan. That’s why he asked her to come live with us and that’s why she sleeps in his bed every night. Luis loves Sheridan and as soon as Luis hears the way you just treated her, he probably won’t even want to be your friend.”
Beth’s face grew red with anger and she stomped out of the youth center. Sheridan wanted to laugh at the way Theresa had turned the tables on Beth, but she also felt a little sorry for her as well.
“Thanks Theresa.”
“Ugh, I can’t stand her,” Theresa said.
“I kind of feel sorry for her. I know when I thought Luis and I wouldn’t be together I was miserable.” “Don’t fell sorry for her Sheridan. Beth may seem nice and sweet, but she’s really a two-faced back stabber. Everyone could see how crazy you and Luis were about each other and I overheard Beth and Hank once talking about ways that they could try to keep the two of you from getting together.
And when Luis and Beth dated in high school she was always nice to Miguel and I in front of Luis, but if he wasn’t around she was mean. She is very selfish. Luis always took care of us when we were kids but she didn’t like it when he spent time with us instead of with her. “Does Luis know any of this?”
“No, but it doesn’t really matter because Luis wants you and only you. Now lets go eat.” “Okay,” Sheridan said, “but definitely not at the Book Café.”
Chapter 46: Caught!
Theresa was sitting on the couch reading a magazine when there was a knock on the door. She was excited to see Ethan on the other side of the door.
“Hi Ethan, what are you doing here?” Theresa asked.
“Is Luis here?”
“No, did you come to see Sheridan?”
“Actually I’m here to see you.”
“Really,” Theresa said excitedly, but her smile faded a bit when she saw the serious look on his face. “Is something wrong Ethan?”
“There is just something I want to talk to you about.”
“You look upset Ethan. I know what will make you feel better, Chocolate!”
“What?” Ethan asked confused.
“Whenever I’m upset about anything chocolate always makes me feel better,” Theresa said, “come in the kitchen and we’ll make some brownies.”
“But Theresa I really need to talk to you about something.”
“First we’ll mix up the brownies and then we can talk while they’re in the oven.”
“What if Luis comes home?”
“Don’t worry. Sheridan said that she and Luis were going to the Lobster Shack after Luis gets off work so they won’t be home for a while.”
“Ok, but I’ve never made brownies before.”
“It’s really easy, I’ll show you how.” Theresa and Ethan went into the kitchen. They mixed up the brownies and put them in the oven.
“So what did you want to talk about?” Theresa asked.
“Well I just wanted to tell you that I don’t think you should come to work at the house anymore.”
“You, you don’t want me to come to work anymore. Why? Am I fired? Did I do something wrong? Is Mrs. Crane angry with me?” Theresa looked up at Ethan and tears were streaming down her face. He hated to see her cry and he took her in his arms and hugged her.
“Please don’t cry Theresa, you didn’t do anything wrong. You’re not fired,” Ethan said rubbing her back, trying to stop her tears. “I’m sorry. I’m saying this all wrong. The reason I don’t want you to come to the house is because of my father. He is so angry with Sheridan and Luis that I don’t want to take the chance that he’ll say or do anything that would upset or hurt you. Mother and I agreed that it would be better if you came to Sheridan’s cottage or to my office, or we could meet somewhere else when you’re working, that’s all.”
Theresa lifted her head off Ethan’s chest and looked up at him. “Really, I’m not fired?”
“Of course not,” Ethan said. Theresa had stopped crying but Ethan still had his arms around her.
Luis parked his car in the driveway at the Lopez-Fitzgerald house. He and Sheridan got out and headed for the house. “I’ll just change out of my uniform real quick and then we can go to dinner,” Luis said.
“Ok, maybe I’ll change too.”
“Why Baby. You look absolutely breathtaking already,” Luis said as he opened the back door and they walked into the kitchen. “What the hell!”
Theresa quickly pulled away from Ethan and turned to face her brother. “Luis, I, um, let me explain.”
“What in the hell are you doing with him? Have you been crying? Did he do something to you?” Luis shouted, “what did you do to my sister Crane?”
Sheridan put her hand on Luis’ shoulder. “Please calm down Luis.”
“Ethan didn’t do anything Luis. I was upset and he was just trying to make me feel better. That’s all.”
“Theresa is my friend. I would never hurt her,” Ethan said.
“Your friend?” Luis asked skeptically, “how do you two even know each other?”
Theresa looked back nervously at Ethan and he gave her a reassuring look. “Um Luis, I’ve been working for Ivy Crane as her personal assistant.”
“You what? You’re working for the Cranes? Since when?”
“Since last summer,” Theresa said nervously, looking down at her hands.
Luis just stared at her for a second. “You’ve been lying to me. All this time you’ve been working for Ivy Crane.” Luis couldn’t believe it. He looked back at Sheridan. “You knew about this the whole time didn’t you?”
“Don’t blame Sheridan,” Theresa said, “she wanted me to tell you the truth myself.”
“And why didn’t you?”
“I was afraid of how you’d react.”
“So you thought I’d be happier if you lied to me for a year and then I found out.”
“I’m sorry, I just know how much you hate the Cranes and I really like working for Mrs. Crane.”
Luis stood there for a second thinking. “I’d really like to speak to Ethan alone,” Luis said. Sheridan put her hand on Luis’ shoulder but he didn’t acknowledge her, he just stared at Ethan. Sheridan gave up and turned and walked out the back door.
“But Luis..”
“No buts Theresa, I want to speak to Ethan now.” Theresa walked away slowly, turning back to look at Ethan before she stepped out the back door.
“Sheridan, where are you?” Theresa called.
“I’m over here.” Sheridan was out in the middle of the backyard in the grass looking up at the stars. Theresa walked over and sat down next to her.
“I’m really sorry that Luis is mad at you,” Theresa said.
“Don’t worry, everything is going to work out ok.”
“But you saw how angry Luis is. You don’t think he’ll hurt Ethan do you?”
“No he won’t hurt him. Luis is only angry because he loves you so much. He just wants to protect you. I’m sure he’s going to be upset with all of us for a while, but we’ll get past it.”
After Theresa left Luis continued to stand there staring at Ethan without saying anything. Finally Ethan spoke. “Luis I know you didn’t want Theresa to be around me. You hate my family and you have good reason. After the way they treated Sheridan I don’t like them very much either. That’s why Theresa was crying. I told her not to come to the house anymore and she thought I was firing her, but I really just don’t want her to be around my father. He is furious about you and Sheridan and I don’t think it’s a good idea for Theresa to be around him.” Luis maintained his stare without saying a word but some of his anger had begun to dissipate.
“You seem to think that I’m going to take advantage of Theresa. I know my father always cheats on my mother and he doesn’t seem to care about her or any of those women, but I’m not like that. I am getting married to Gwen and I would never hurt her like that or Theresa. Theresa is the best friend I’ve ever had and I’m not going to do anything to hurt her.” Ethan stopped and looked at Luis, “aren’t you going to say anything?”
“What would you do if I told you never to see Theresa again?” Luis asked.
“If Theresa made the decision that she didn’t want to see me then I would respect that. But I don’t have any intention of ending my friendship with Theresa just because you don’t like me. You wouldn’t stop seeing Sheridan just because my father and grandfather don’t want you to be together would you?”
Luis smiled slightly, “good point.”
“You’re not going to do that are you?”
“No.”
“Are you going to make Theresa quit her job?”
“What kind of work is she doing?” Luis asked.
“Usually she works for my mother planning parties and charity events, she looks at all the latest collections from top fashion designers and places the orders for my mothers wardrobe. She also helps me put together memos and proposals and things. But lately she has just been working on the wedding. Gwen has been out of town on business and Theresa has planned our entire wedding. She even designed all the dresses and the flower arrangements.”
“You’re really going to use Theresa’s designs for your wedding,” Luis asked.
“Of course. Theresa’s a wonderful designer and I think that the wedding and all the people she’s met working for my mother will really help her break into the fashion industry.”
“I’m glad she’s getting the chance to try and make her dream come true. She always wanted to be a designer but I never really thought she’d get the chance.”
“Does this mean you’re going to let her keep working for us?”
“Yes I guess so.”
“And you’re not going to kill me?”
Luis laughed, “no, I’m not going to kill you. Mama and Sheridan keep telling me that you’re a good guy, so I guess I can give you a chance. But I will be keeping an eye on you, so you better be good to her.” The timer on the oven beeped. “What is that?”
“Theresa and I are making brownies.”
“Oh, well you get the brownies and I’ll go find Theresa.”
Luis looked around the back yard and saw Theresa and Sheridan in the grass. “Theresa come here.” Theresa got up and walked over to Luis.
“You’re not going to send me to a convent are you?” she asked.
Luis laughed and hugged Theresa, “of course not. I’d miss you too much.”
“Are you going to make me quit my job?”
“No, but Ethan is right, you should stay away form Julian. And tomorrow I want to see the designs you made for the wedding and hear all about the work you’ve been doing. Now go inside, your brownies are done and Ethan is waiting for you.” Theresa was so excited she practically ran into the house. Luis went over to Sheridan and lay down in the grass with her.
“I’m really sorry I didn’t tell you Luis,” Sheridan said trying to keep herself form crying. She had stayed calm for Theresa, but she really was worried that Luis would be angry with her.
“You don’t have anything to be sorry for. It’s my fault that Theresa didn’t tell me the truth. I was so judgmental about you and Ethan that I made Theresa afraid to tell me.”
“So are you ok with them being friends?”
“I guess so. He says he won’t do anything to hurt her, but I know she’s gong to get hurt anyway.”
“You mean when Ethan marries Gwen?”
“You know huh, does Ethan know she’s in love with him?”
“No, but Theresa believes in fate remember. Look at the way things turned out for us. One day Theresa will find the love of her life. In the end things will turn out exactly the day they are supposed to.”
“I guess you’re right, I just wish she didn’t have to suffer, that’s all.”
“It will all be worth it once she has the happiness that we do,” Sheridan said and she pulled Luis into a kiss.
Chapter 47: Secret Surprises
Sheridan was sitting at the kitchen table late on Saturday morning when Theresa finally wandered into the kitchen in her pajamas.
“Oh good, you’re finally up,” Sheridan said, “I thought you were going to sleep till noon.”
“Well it is Saturday. What’s going on? You look all excited.”
“I am excited. I want you to help me with something.”
“Ok what.”
“Well, before I tell you I want you to promise that you won’t tell Luis.”
“I don’t know Sheridan. Luis hates secrets. You saw how upset he got that I had lied to him.”
“Theresa it isn’t a secret, It’s a surprise.”
“Oh well in that case I’m in,” Theresa said excitedly, “what’s the surprise?”
“I bought a house,” Sheridan said.
“Wow, which house did you decide on?”
“Here,” Sheridan handed Theresa a picture. “It’s a few blocks away. It’s actually just down the street from Whitney’s house.”
“Oh my god Sheridan,” Theresa gasped, “Luis loves this house. It’s like his dream house.”
“I know,” Sheridan smiled, “and I want to get everything ready and then surprise Luis. If you’re not busy today I was hoping you would go with me and Ethan to look at furniture and decide how to decorate and stuff.”
“Sure, I’d love to,” Theresa said, perking up at the thought of spending the day with Ethan.
“Ok, go get ready then because Ethan will be here to pick us up in half an hour.
Many hours later Ethan collapsed on a couch at the Book Café. “I don’t know what I was thinking,” Ethan mumbled, “spending my day shopping with two women.”
“You offered,” Sheridan laughed and she sat down on one side of Ethan and Theresa sat on the other.
“I just didn’t know it would take so long to pick out furniture.”
“Oh come on, it wasn’t that bad,” Theresa said, “why don’t I go get you some coffee and a muffin or something. You need to keep your strength up for when you have to move all that furniture Sheridan just bought.”
Ethan’s eyes got really big. “What? Sheridan, you’re not really gonna make me move furniture are you?”
“Sheridan just laughed. “No, I told the guys at the furniture store that I’d pay them extra to move and set up everything when they deliver it tomorrow. Theresa’s just teasing you.”
Ethan grabbed Theresa playfully and tickled her. “Say you’re sorry for teasing me.”
“Ok, I’m sorry,” Theresa said between giggles and Ethan stopped tickling her but he didn’t quite let go of her.
“Alright you two,” Sheridan laughed, “we better get going. We don’t want to be late for dinner.”
“Ok, why don’t you have dinner with us Ethan,” Theresa said.
“I don’t want to intrude.”
“Don’t be silly Ethan, you wouldn’t be intruding,” Theresa said, “Miguel is even bringing Charity to dinner and I’m sure Mama would love to have you.”
“Theresa’s right Ethan, you should come.”
“Ok, let’s go.”
After dinner Theresa, Ethan, Sheridan and Luis were out in the backyard playing basketball when Ethan’s cell phone rang.
“Hello.”
“Hi Ethan darling, it’s Gwen.”
“Oh hi Gwen.”
“What’s wrong Ethan, you sound like you’re out of breath.”
“I’m playing basketball at Theresa’s,” Ethan said.
“What are you doing at Theresa’s?” Gwen asked.
“Sheridan and Theresa invited me for dinner.”
“Uh, you had to have dinner over there. I wish Sheridan hadn’t started living there so you weren’t forced to keep going over there.”
Ethan stepped further away so no one would hear. “What is that supposed to mean Gwen?”
“I just feel bad that you’re so lonely without me there that you have to go spend time at that tiny little house and play basketball of all things,” Gwen said snottily, “and I really don’t know what’s the matter with Sheridan. I mean Luis is good looking and all, but to lower herself like that and even give up everything she had to go live in Luis’ room in that little house. I mean she doesn’t even have a maid, well unless you count Pilar,” Gwen laughed, “poor Sheridan, she doesn’t deserve to have to live like that. She is supposed to have fine things and be waited on just like we are.”
Ethan was so disturbed by what Gwen said that he couldn’t even think of anything to say to her. “I have to go Gwen,” he managed to get out and he hung up the phone and went back to the basketball game.
A few days later Luis had just gotten home from work. “Sheridan, are you here?” Luis called.
“Hi son,” Pilar said, coming out of the kitchen, “Sheridan isn’t home. She told me to tell you she had to do something and she’d be home soon. Can you do something for me Luis?”
“Sure Mama, what is it?”
“Well, I was supposed to deliver this welcome basket for the ladies church group to someone who just moved into the neighborhood but I have to go to a PTA meeting at the school, so would you mind taking it for me.”
“Anything for you Mama.”
Thank you Luis. Here’s the address and here is the basket.” Luis left the house to deliver the basket and a big smile spread across Pilar’s face.
