Maeve looked up to her Dad, who had been watching TV the whole evening. This was beginning to irritate her. The way he sometimes seemed to just don’t care. He was sitting there, in his favourite chair, not really watching the base-ball game, not really sleeping, just in this position that Maeve knew so well. She suddenly sighed, got up from the couch, and waved a good-night to her father, before heading upstairs to her room.
She slowly opened the door, as if she expected something, or someone, to go out as she did so. Sometimes she found that room so depressing. The walls were painted in a strange color, something between white and gold, and they always looked as if they were sick, which made Maeve even more depressive. She walked to her small desk, looking at the files so perfectly sorted. She really did not feel like working tonight. This job was ‘very interessant’, of course, but somehow she knew she wasn’t meant to be a simple secretary.
She almost threw herself on her bed, sighing loudly as she put her head on the pillow. She didn’t really want to sleep, she knew too well that those dreams were going to drive her crazy if she did. There were no nightmares, just…odd dreams. And there was always this man, this man she had never seen before, this man that made her feel so comfortable when she was sleeping. He was just there, holding her, or taking her hand, leading her to a better life. But every morning, when she woke up, the day she was facing seemed more and more difficult to hold as the nights and dreams went on. She just couldn’t accept that they were only dreams, and that he was only an illusion her mind had formed in order to hang on to something.
You're only just a dream boat
Sailing in my head
You swim my secret ocean
Of coral blue and red
Your smell is incense burning
Your touch is silken yet
It reaches trough my skin
Moving from within
And clutches at my breast
"Maeve?" The voice was warm and soft, invitating.
The red-headed woman turned to look at him, to look into those beautiful blue orbs. She extended her hand to catch his, a smile forming on her lips.
"Oh Sinbad…I’ve been waiting all day long to see you…to feel you…" her voice seemed weak, unsure of what she was saying.
He laughed softly. "But I’m here now…We’ll always be together."
Maeve shook her head sadly. "No,we won’t. I know that when I’ll wake up, you won’t be there, by my side… You’re just living in my head…"
But it's only when I sleep
See you in my dreams
Got me spining round and round
Turning upside down
But I only hear you breathe
Somewhere in my sleep
Got me spinning round and round
Turning upside down
But it's olnly when I sleep
He slowly lead her to a ship, a ship which seemed to come out from an old epic that talked about lengendary heroes like Hercule, Jason…Sinbad the sailor… That was when it hit her. She turned her eyes to him, looking him from head to toe. He was wearing a simple white shirt, with a blue jacket and blue pants. His waist was circled by a red belt, and his hair was 'tied' with a headband, red too. Her eyes widened in surprise, never the thought had crossed her mind before.
"You are…Sinbad…" she murmured, frowning.
He gently smiled.
"Yeah… But I thought I already told you my name, didn’t I?"
Maeve shook her head in amazement.
"Well… Yeah, you told me your name was Sinbad…You didn’t tell me you were THAT Sinbad, you know, Sinbad the sailor, Master of the seven Seas… as in The Thousand and One Nights…." She was so amazed, knowing that it was her mind that had formed him, and wondering where she got this idea about that old book she had once read when she was eleven… This dream was so weird, weird because she actually knew she was dreaming…weird because that man was strange… Because her life was strange…
His grin only grew bigger as he saw her hesitating.
"What ?? You created me, didn’t you ? So why do you seem so surprised?"
He held her hand tigher, and brought her in his arms, gently. She came without even thinking about it, droving into the warmth embrace. She loved it so much when he held her like this. It felt like being held by her mother, with something more she had never known before…
After a few minutes, or maybe a few hours, in fact it didn’t matter since it was a dream, he gently broke off and looked her in the eye. His face suddenly lit up like a little boy’s as a thought crossed his mind.
"Come on, Maeve ! I’m going to take you somewhere you will be safe. We’ll take my ship, and we’ll sail so far away that you won’t have to stop dreaming tomorrow, and when you’ll wake up, we’ll still be together!"
She let him leading her to the ship with a smile, knowing that anyway she would wake up the next day, alone. ‘Come on, Maeve.’ She told herself. ‘Your life’s depressing. If you can have a great one in your dreams, then let that happiness come to you.’
And when I wake from slumber
Your shadow’s disapearred
Your breathe is just a sea mist
Surrounding my body
I’m working through the day time
But when it’s time to rest
I’m lying in my bed
Listening to my breath
Falling from the edge
Maeve moaned tiredly as rays of sun pierced through the curtains, waking her from her dream, again. She slowly opened her eyes, almost expecting to feel something warm next to her ; but the feeling was gone again, he was gone.
She sat in her bed, blinking her eyes. And then, suddenly, no even knowing why, she burst out in tears, hiding her face in her hands. Everything was over again…like every morning…and like each day, she would have to get up, to wash herself, to have her breakfast downstairs with her father’s shadow, who would be listening to the news on the radio, not even bothering to greet her. She fell back in the sweet warmth of her sheets, still crying, holding on her pillow, sobbing, murmuring his name softly.
‘Just a dream. He’s just a dream. A dream.’ Maeve felt lost the whole day, repeating those words in her head, while sorting some uninteressant files for her boss. She hated that man, he was always watching her with a glint in his eyes, that meant that he would like to enter a relationship more…personal…with her. But Maeve didn’t really care. She was accustomed of that kind of gazes from men. After all, she was quite a beautiful woman, she admitted it to herself, but for some reason, no one had ever really liked her for who she was…and not for her looks. ‘Men are so strange…so complicated…Sinbad is a simple man…he has the touch and the care of man, but his mind is as innocent as a child’s…’
She shook her head, forcing those thoughts to go out from her confused mind.
But it's only when I sleep
See you in my dreams
Got me spining round and round
Turning upside down
But I only hear you breathe
Somewhere in my sleep
Got me spinning round and round
Turning upside down
But it's olnly when I sleep
"Follow me…" he said, his voice as soft as the gentle wind surrounding them.
She took his hand, a smile illuminating her face, a fiery light shining in her eyes. Somewhere deep in her mind, she knew this was Friday night, and that she could sleep late in the morning…She would be with him…
He lead her to a beautiful and small beach, filled with white sand, and they ran, laughing in the bright sunlight. They stopped running when they reached the water, still laughing, and tried to regain their breathe.
"Maeve?" he said softly, still winded.
"Yeah?"she asked, her eyes devouring his.
"Do you love me?" He demanded in a childish tone of voice, glaring at her with his puppy dog look.
Maeve was surprised by such a question. She didn’t know what to answer. He was HER dream, of course she loved him ! She had invented him, and he was exactly what she searched in a man…He was as beautiful as a greek god, charming, nice, caring, touching…he was perfect.
"Of course I love you! You’re the only reason I get up in the morning, because I know dusk will come, and that I’ll be with you again…You’re my only hope, my only love…" her voice was trembling a bit.
He smiled like a little boy. She loved that look on his face. He seemed touched by her words, and Maeve was almost sure that a single tear was forming in the corner of his eye.
"Oh Maeve…I love you too," he said, smiling warmly.
But Maeve lost her smile. "No. She said. "You cannot love me…you don’t really exist…you cannot love. You can pretend to care, to be nice, you’re beautiful, you’re great…but you cannot love me." She seemed so sure of what she was saying that Sinbad did not try to argue back.
"Well…it doesn’t matter." He said. "If you wanna think that I don’t love you…that’s your problem…But I know that I do."
He paused, and then smiled again, pulling her closer into his arms. "Let me show you…let me show you my love."
Maeve grinned. He was so great. She knew she wouldn’t really be living the emotions she was going to experience…but why resisting?
He leaned closer, brushing his lips with hers. The kiss was tender, gentle… but then it became more passionate, as she opened her mouth to him, allowing him to slide his tongue in it. He moaned softly as he gently broke the kiss, descending from her mouth to her neck, sending waves of excitement in her as he began to explore her body with his tongue. She ran her long fingers through his silky hair, enjoying the feeling of his body against hers. He descended again, burying his head in her chest.
"Sinbad." She slowly called. "Sinbad? What are you doing?"
He stopped tickling her with his tongue and lifted his head to look in her eyes. His gaze was seductive.
"Don’t you like it? He asked, flashing her his killer grin.
Maeve blushed a little, and then answered :
"Well…yes, I do, but…I…"she seemed to hesitate.
He was waiting patiently for her to say it. He knew it already, but she seemed to want to say it, so he was listening. She cleared her throat. " I…I have…never..um…been with a man."
He smiled softly. "Well…you missed a lot of things…" he said evily, joking.
She made a face, pretending to be angry at him. But soon he laughed and she joined him.
"Come on, Maeve, the night is too short to be wasted…"
Saying this he moved his hands to her neck, and began kissing her full mouth again, showing her his desire…and his love, for the rest of the night.
Up to the sky
Where angels fly
I'll never die
Hawaïn high
In bed I lie
No need to dry
My sleeping cry
Hawaïn high
Maeve woke up again, the next morning, in her bed still warm and filled with the soft smell of musk. She sighed happily, remembering being in his arms just a few minutes before. Her life was beginning to change…she did not right know why…but she could sense it. As if spending her night with him made her stronger this day, instead of leaving her feeling sleepy and miserable. Alright, this had only been a dream, again…but she knew somehow that it was taking a way…a strange way that would lead her to real happiness…Soon, he wouldn’t only be a dream…she knew it for sure…
But it's only when I sleep
See you in my dreams
Got me spining round and round
Turning upside down
But I only hear you breathe
Somewhere in my sleep
Got me spinning round and round
Turning upside down
But it's olnly when I sleep
‘She’s so beautiful’ I think as she passes by me, not seeing me as everyday. I smile as she sits down in her chair, pulling a strand of red curls behind her ear. God ! I feel my heart shaking only by watching her there, typing on the keyboard of her computer some letters given by the boss. I would give anything, only to spend a moment alone with her, to get the time to talk to her…But she always seems to be dreaming…She doesn’t greet anyone here, she never eats with us… she seems to be so shy…I wonder why. I know this can seem crazy, I don’t know much about that woman, but I think I’m falling madly in love with her.
And I sit there, spending all my day looking at her between two files, my sea-blue eyes filled with desire, until my brother calls me back to reality, holding out another file to me. "Steve ! You’re never gonna get this promotion if you aren’t more concentrated on your work!"
And as always, I sigh, nod at him, wondering why my life is so depressing. If only she could notice me…
You're only just a dream boat
Sailing in my head
You swim my secret ocean
Of coral blue and red
Your smell is incense burning
Your touch is silken yet
It reaches trough my skin
Moving from within
And clutches at my breast
"Maeve!" He exclaimed, as cheerful as he usually was.
She ran to him and threw herself into his arms, resting her head on his shoulder.
"…I thought of you only once today…but it lasted all the day…" Maeve said with a smile.
"Oh god!" she sighed. "I cannot take this…I mean, I need you…"
He looked at her, his sea-blue eyes full of warmth and love. She hesitated to go on, but she did.
"I…I want you to be a part of my life…" She paused. "Well, you’re already the most important part of it," she added with a faint smile, "but I want you to be there…near me…in my reality, not only in my dreams."
He smiled again, gently, but did not seem to understand what was bothering her. He saw her every night, and he lived only at night, so he did not understand what she was talking about : his life was only with her, because she had created him. He gently reached out his hand to brush a strand of her beautiful red hair.
"You’re beautiful…like an angel." He whispered, before leaning forward to kiss her. He wanted to taste her, he needed to.
She smiled sadly as he broke away for a second, looking her in the eye. Her eyes were shining, and she knew she couldn’t hold her tears back for long, so she let the roll on her cheeks as he frowned, wondering why she seemed so sad.
"What? Why are you crying? Maeve?"
But she couldn’t answer, for the tears in her throat were holding back the words she wanted to pronounce. So she burst out crying, sobbing uncontrolably in his neck.
Sinbad frowned again, stroking her hair to calm her down.
"Shh…it’s alright…" he mumured. He wanted her to stop, he couldn’t bear to see her suffer like this. What the hell was bothering her? She seemed so happy the night before…
She finally calmed down a bit, enough for her voice to pronouce a few words.
"You don’t understand…you just live at night, when my body’s asleep and when my mind frees itself. You don’t know what it is to face each day like the previous one, to have nothing real to hold on to…" She sighed and burried her face in his chest again. She wanted to beat herself for what she had just said. She was so bright when she woke up the day before. She did not understand why she was cracking up now. She sniffled and lifted her head to look at him. All she needed was to feel him loving her, to feel his warmth surrounding her. She decided to let it come to her.
"Love me…" she whispered.
And he did so, leading her to a new place again, where the sky was made of a soft pink, and where the moon caressed them with her blue light as they tasted each other in a bed of roses.
Up to the sky
Where angels fly
I'll never die
Hawaïn high
In bed I lie
No need to dry
My sleeping cry
Hawaïn high
I got this idea when I woke up this morning. Nothing will ever be the same. I know I love that woman, even if I don’t know what she likes, what she dreams of, even if I don’t even know her name. She’s got an aura I never met before. She’s like a magnet, and I’m the fridge.
But today I made my decision. When she arrives at work at 9, I’ll go to her and I’ll speak to her. At least I’ll try. She’s so marvellous. I’m sure she’s a very nice person. I’m sure she’ll listen to me.
"Steve! Come on, Little Brother, your breakfast’s waiting!"
I sigh as I straighten my tie.
"I’m coming, Dave, I’m coming."
I look up at the miror. ‘I’m not that bad-looking’ I thought as I do my shiny brown hair, wondering if I’m worth such a woman. Sometimes I just can’t bear those blue eyes of mine. They are so…so piercing. I hope that people don’t think I’m a serial killer or something when they meet me. I’ve never been very appreciated. If only this could change. And I sigh again as I take my attaché case before heading downstairs.
But it's only when I sleep
See you in my dreams
Got me spining round and round
Turning upside down
But I only hear you breathe
Somewhere in my sleep
Got me spinning round and round
Turning upside down
But it's olnly when I sleep
Maeve woke up with that feeling of joy again. Why? What made her so happy every morning? She knew he was just a dream, she knew it too well. So why this impression that she was going to meet him, to meet the REAL him… No. He did not exist. He was just an illusion.
She slowly got up and headed downstairs, where her father was already having his breakfast. She greeted him faintly, and surprisingly, he greeted her back. ‘Wow…this day is probably going to be strange’ she thought. Strange…well this word was not bad after all. Her life was made of strangeness. But if a single day in this strange life of hers was actually strange, something was surely going to happen. Something different, something new.
The tall red-haired woman looked one last time to the mirror, and deciding she looked smart enough, she left the house.
Your breathe is just a sea mist
Surrounding my body
That’s her! Oh my God she’s coming. I have to get up. I have to react. Alright Steve, let’s go. I walk towards her but she doesn’t see me. She seems to be lost deep in thought, as always. No. I have to do it. I move forward, I clear my throat to get her attention.
"Excuse me?"
She lifts her head and looks right through me. But what’s happening? She looks so surprised. No, it’s more than that. She looks amazed, but not horrified. As if she had known me before and hadn’t seen me for at least twenty years. Her eyes are so deep and she’s looking right into mine, she doen’t leave them for a second, as if she’s trying to recognize someone in me. Oh God, I don’t know what I actually expected, but I surely did not think she would react like this. Hey what’s the matter?
"Oh my God…" are all the words that escape her lips.
Oh no! She faints! I catch her before she hits the ground. What’s wrong? I sit down on the floor, still holding her. Now all the people working here are there, surrounding me, surrounding us, wondering what I’ve done to her to make her collapse. No! Don’t you all come around her! She needs some air, some space! Leave us alone!
I suddenly stop those negative thoughts from blurring my mind as she opens her eyes. Surprising me again, she smiles at me as she reaches my cheek with her fingertips.
"I can’t believe it… "she whispers. "You’re real, I’m not dreaming…"
I smile back at her, even if I have absolutely no idea of what she’s talking about. Maybe she’s ill, maybe she’s delirous? But I don’t know what’s happening, and my words are not under my control.
"Yeah I am," I smile again. "You’re so beautiful." I stroke her hair gently.
But then she grabs my neck and brings her lips furiously to mine. I’m so surprised that I don’t react. Everyone’s around, wondering what’s happening. They all know too well that she’s THE mysterious girl who never speaks to anyone, and they know too well that we don’t know each other. But I don’t care. I feel her warm lips pressing against mine, and everything disappears. She’s amazing.
Your smell is incense burning
Your touch is silken yet
It reaches trough my skin
Moving from within
Maeve sat down on her bed, feeling incredibly odd. Never she had experienced such a day. Sinbad...Sinbad was real. Sinbad…Sinbad had kissed her back, with such passion…this kiss was so different from the ones she had experienced with him in her dreams. This one had been real. She had realized that everyone was staring at them only 1 or 2 minutes later, when they had broke their embrace gently. And then she had looked at each person there, seeing them truly for the first time. They all had a big smile curving their lips, all except maybe that petite brunette over there, and they had broke up cheering, saying things like ‘Wow, Steve, I never thought you would be able to do such a thing’. Steve? That was only now that she realised it. Steve. His name was Steve. Not Sinbad. But why did he look so much like him? And why was he so afraid that he had almost run away after their kiss? WHO was he?
All those questions were hurting in her mind like hell. And she slowly let her body slide in deep slumber.
But it's only when I sleep
"Maeve!" Sinbad greeted her as he ran towards the beautiful woman.
Maeve took a step back, hesitating.
"Steve?" she whispered.
Sinbad immediately stopped running and stood there, a few inches away from her.
"What? What did you call me?"
She swallowed. Obviously, there were now two different persons in her life. But they were also one. One face, one body, one smell.
"I…I can’t!" Maeve cried slowly, lost in deep confusion.
"Maeve!" Sinbad tried to reach out to her, to grab her hand.
But she was already slipping away.
Maeve suddenly woke up, breathing heavily. She slowly sat up, touching her forehead, moist with sweat.
"Oh God" she fell back in her pillows.
But it's only when I sleep
See you in my dreams
Got me spining round and round
Turning upside down
But I only hear you breathe
Somewhere in my sleep
Got me spinning round and round
Turning upside down
But it's olnly when I sleep
I can’t believe it. Today is our first month together anniversary. Maeve is such a great woman. Our meeting was pretty weird, I must admit. But we’ve been going out with each other for a month now, and I can tell how madly I fell for her. The most amazing thing is that she actually told me she felt the same way. This is so unbelievable. I am Steve Cambell, a simple secretary, and I’m going out with the most beautiful, the most clever, the most amazing woman in the world. My life has never been that happy before. And I guess without Maeve, this life of mine would be nothing, absolutely nothing. She’s my all, my everything, I couldn’t live anymore without her. I love her.
Up to the sky
Where angels fly
I'll never die
Maeve looked back at her boyfriend who was parking his car. She smiled as she watched his angry expression, he couldn’t bear those too small parking spaces. He finally got out of the car and walked to her. He smiled back as she took his hand. Maeve was feeling so good. Today was their first month anniversary, and never in her life she had felt so alive. He loved her, she loved him, and her dream had finally come true. Sinbad did not exist anymore. Her past, present and future were only Steve.
They hurried to the restaurant as the rain started falling.
I'll never die
We laugh as she smacks my arm gently. Alright I deserve it, I shoudn’t have said that stupid joke. But she doesn’t seem that angry. And I know how to get forgiven. I stop her in the street and suddenly kiss her passionnately, as if we had to be apart for a long time. But I know we’ll never be. We’re crazy, I guess, but tonight we decided to get married next month. I’ve never felt that good before. Oh God…My life’s perfect.
I took her hand and lead her to the car, but then I go back to the restaurant, because she just remembered that she forgot her purse there. I hurry as I cross the road. But I don’t see it, I don’t see that big car coming so fast. And I feel my body hurting like hell as it sends me flying in the air.
"NOOOO!!!! STEVE!!!" I hear her cry from a far, far distance.
I feel her surrounding me, I feel her warmth, her love.
"Steve" she whispers, carressing my cheek. "Don’t you dare dying on me! I need you!".
I hear her crying, I hear her calling out my name, I feel her arms around me as everything grows darker and darker. Her voice is now just like the wind, filling my mind. I see her beautiful brown orbs engraved in my head, in my heart and soul, and I know everything’s over as I feel my flesh slipping away. My love. I’ll never really die.
You're only just a dream boat
Sailing in my head
You swim my secret ocean
Of coral blue and red
Your smell is incense burning
Your touch is silken yet
It reaches trough my skin
Moving from within
And clutches at my breast
"Sinbad" she murmured as she took his soft hands in hers. "Thanks God you’re here."
He smiled as he stroked her cheek.
"I will always be there…just chose this reality and we’ll always be together"
