Chapters 9-10: If These Walls Could Talk

Chapter 9:

Theresa tiredly walked into her house after her long day at work. Since she took the afternoon off yesterday, she had a lot of catching up to do. She hadn't talked to Ethan since yesterday when she stormed out of the car. For the last 36 hours, all she had done was think about what was going on with them and what she was going to do. She still had no clue. Theresa decided she really should call Ethan because he was probably completely clueless as to what was going on with her. She didn't know what she was going to say, but she wanted to at least get a few things out in the open. She slowly picked up the phone and dialed his number.

"Hello?" Ethan answered.

"Hey, it's me."

"Theresa! Are you feeling better? I was worried about you," he asked, concerned.

"Yes, thank you." She didn't really want to talk to him on the phone. "Do you want to go somewhere and talk?"

"Yeah, sweetie, that's fine. Do you want me to pick you up and we can go for a walk?"

"Sounds good, Ethan. I'll see you soon."

"Okay. Bye."

"Bye." She hung up the phone and went to change her clothes.

As Theresa walked into her bedroom, she felt the sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach return. She honestly had no idea what she was going to say to Ethan when he arrived. She just decided to play it by ear…she would know when she saw him. She changed out of her dress and put on jean shorts, a pink tank top and sandals. She looked at her reflection in the mirror and noticed the sad look in her eyes. 'Come on Theresa, pull it together.' She sprayed some of the perfume that Ethan bought her for her birthday and fastened the necklace he bought her for Christmas around her neck. She walked into the kitchen and left a note for her mother and she heard a knock at the door which startled her.

She opened the door and found Ethan standing there with the same sad look on his face that she had just seen on her own face not five minutes earlier. She forced a smile at him.

"Hi."

"Hi," he replied quietly. "Are you ready to go?"

"Yeah." She followed him out of the door and locked it behind her. 'This is going to be a long night.'

They walked in silence for quite awhile and Theresa couldn't take it anymore. "I told Mama the truth about everything yesterday." Ethan stopped in his tracks and turned to look at her.

"You did? What did she say?"

"She wasn't too happy, but then again, the manner in which I told her wasn't the best either. I was mad at you and I took it out on her." Ethan shut his eyes and sighed.

"Theresa, you have no idea how sorry I am and how bad I felt yesterday after I said that."

Theresa just nodded her head. "I'm sorry too." She looked down at her feet and felt the tears begin to well up. She willed them away because she couldn't start crying now. She just knew what was coming and it felt like someone was ripping her heart out.

"Theresa?" Ethan said quietly. Theresa walked over to the park bench and sat down because she was afraid that she would fall down otherwise. She rested her elbows on her knees and put her head in her hands and tried to find the right words. Ethan sat down beside her. "Baby, what's wrong?" He now had a sinking feeling in his stomach like somewhere in the back of his mind he knew what was coming, but he didn't want to admit it.

"Yesterday when I stormed out of your car angry, I really began to think about things. I've done nothing but think about you and me, our relationship…EVERYTHING for the last 36 hours. I had and still have every kind of emotion possible running through me at once…" her voice trailed off.

"What's happening, Theresa?" Ethan asked barely above a whisper. Theresa shook her head and felt tears forming again.

"For so long, I wanted to be with you. I wanted to be the one that you loved and the one that loved you more than anyone could. That was my dream. I finally got my dream and it was unbelievable. I thought I loved you before I truly knew who you were, but when I got to know you, I realized that the reality was so much better than the dream ever was. You are the most special man I have ever met, and you make me feel so loved." A few tears escaped her eyes and Ethan reached up to wipe them away and she continued.

"Lately though, it seems like all we do is fight and then make up without truly making up. Between you, Mama, and Luis, I feel like I'm being pulled in every different direction and a lot of the time, I still feel like I'm treated like that 17 year old girl that I was when I first met you."

"Theresa, I don't mean to…" he began, but was cut off by Theresa.

"Ethan, please let me finish or else I may never be able to." She looked up at him and saw his blue eyes looking at her with a mixture of emotions…love, confusion, and sadness. Ethan just nodded and allowed her to continue.

"I'm almost 20 years old, and sometimes I don't think people remember that. I've changed so much in the last few years. With Mama and Luis, they still see me as a little girl that can't make decisions for herself. And with you…" she let her voice trail off again and looked down at the ground. "With you, I think you forget that I'm 19 and that sometimes I have a tendency to want to behave like a 19 year old and do things that 19 year old college students do. I know that everyone worries about me because they love me and want what's best for me, but right now I need to be the one making the decisions about what is best for me. I need to know that if I make a mistake I'm strong enough to fix it without the help of someone else. I need to find out what other dreams I have besides being with you. As trite as this sounds, I need to find myself, Ethan."

"Theresa, I know that I smother you sometimes, and I'm sorry. I do forget that you are only 19 because you're so mature. I love you so much and I just want to protect you. I promise I will work on that and give you the space you need to make your own decisions. I will do whatever it takes, I just want us to stop fighting." Theresa felt the tears falling from her eyes. He just didn't get it and he was making this harder than it already was.

"No, Ethan, you don't understand what I'm saying."

Ethan swallowed hard. "What are you saying then?" he asked nervously.

"I'm saying I need a break from us," Theresa choked out as the tears streamed down her face.

"Theresa, no." Ethan felt the tears in his own eyes coming at a rapid rate. He felt like he had been kicked in the stomach. "Baby, please don't say that."

"I have to Ethan. It's not fair to you if I stay with you because I don't want to hurt you. It'll only end up hurting you more in the long run."

"Don't you love me anymore?" Ethan asked, dumbfounded by the situation.

"Ethan, I love you more than anything, and it's because I love you that I have to do this. I kept thinking that I have loved you for as long as I can remember, and I don't know how to not love you…and that scares me."

"How can loving me scare you?"

"It's not the loving you that scares me, Ethan. It's the fact that I don't know anything else but how to love you that scares me. I can't go on making others happy without making myself happy first."

"Theresa please. Tell me what to do and I will do it. I will do anything just please don't leave me," he begged as the tears fell. Theresa looked up at him and felt her heart shatter into a million pieces. It killed her to be the one doing this, but she had to. She didn't want to end up resenting him or her life with him…she loved him too much to let that happen.

"If you will do anything for me, please, please Ethan, let me go. I just need time to figure things out before we can move forward in our relationship."

"I'm afraid that if I let you go you'll find someone else that makes you happy and you won't come back to me. Theresa, there is no one else for me but you. Don't you know that?"

Theresa nodded. "I know that Ethan, but I have to do this. I love you so much and I do want to be with you someday. I just can't do it right now. I need time." Theresa was trying to keep herself from sobbing but it wasn't easy. She reached up to wipe away his tears.

"I don't want this to happen, but if it means that you'll come back to me one day, I will. I love you more than anything and I want you to be happy." He returned the favor and gently brushed the tears away from her face. "Can I ask one more thing before we leave it like this?"

"Yes Ethan."

"Can I kiss you goodbye?" he asked as he felt his own sobs begin.

Theresa nodded sadly. Ethan pushed a piece of stray hair out of her eyes and ran his thumb lightly over her cheek. He slowly leaned in and gently pressed his lips to hers. Both got lost in the moment and Theresa realized she couldn't do this. She pushed Ethan away.

"I'm sorry Ethan. I have to go." She stood up and ran away from him sobbing freely. Ethan watched his love run from him and he put his head in his hands and cried.

Theresa ran to the other side of the park until she felt like her legs were going to give out on her. She sat on a bench and hugged her knees to her chest and continued to cry.

What ravages of spirit
Conjure this temptuous rage
Created you a monster
Broken by the rules of love
And fate has led you through it
You do what you have to do
And fate has led you through it
You do what you have to do…

And I have the sense to recognize that
I don't know how to let you go
Every moment marked
With apparitions of your soul
I'm ever swiftly moving
Trying to escape this desire
The yearning to be near you
I do what I have to do
The yearning to be near you
I do what I have to do
But I have the sense to recognize

That I don't know how
To let you go
I don't know how
To let you go

A glowing ember
Burning hot
Burning slow
Deep within I'm shaken by the violence
Of existing only for you

I know I can't be with you
I do what I have to do
I know I can't be with you
I do what I have to do
And I have the sense to recognize that
I don't know how to let you go
I don't know how to let you go

Chapter 10:

It was Wednesday evening and Sheridan walked into the apartment upon returning home from work. She was so happy to be done with work for awhile. There were three more days until the wedding and she still had a million things to do yet the only thing she really wanted to do was see Luis. They hadn't spent anytime together this week because he was working nights and the only moments she saw him were sleepy ones. Either she was sleeping when he got home or he was sleeping when she was leaving. But not tonight. She'd finally get to see him since she didn't have to get up early in the morning. She smiled as she looked at the picture of the two of them on the refrigerator. Sheridan fixed herself something to eat and went into the bedroom to start packing for Spain. She was so excited to leave for their honeymoon she was about to burst.

After she had packed a lot of what they were taking to Spain, she showered and put on her favorite pajamas. They were bright pink satin pajamas that had both cropped pants and a fitted crop top that went off her shoulders and bared most of her midriff. Luis called them her genie PJs because he said she looked like 'I Dream of Jeanie.' She dried her hair and went to watch a movie. She put "Ever After" into the VCR and got comfy on the couch and excitedly waited for Luis to come home.

Meanwhile, Luis was at the station closing up some cases. He really wanted to get out of there and go see Sheridan. He missed her like crazy because he hadn't seen her much at all this week. He was just glad that this was his last night of work until after they returned from Spain and after that he wouldn't have to work as many nights. He put his pen down and rubbed his eyes. He looked at the picture of her on his desk and picked it up. It was his favorite picture of her. Luis smiled remembering the day it was taken.

**Flashback**

It was the annual summer beach festival in Harmony and practically the whole town attended. During the day there were things to do at the beach and at night there was a luau. Luis picked up Sheridan at her apartment early in the day so they could head to the beach. It was the perfect summer day and he was ecstatic about spending the entire day with the woman he loved.

When they arrived at the beach, they discovered a hefty crowd already participating in the activities. Sheridan found a spot on the beach she liked and spread her blanket out on the sand. Luis put down the bags and the sand chairs he was carrying. Sheridan took off her tank top and jean shorts and threw them in her bag. Luis stood and admired her as she worked to get herself ready for a day of fun and sun. He noticed how beautifully tan her skin was and the way she looked in her red bikini made his heart beat fast. He whistled at her and she looked up with a smirk.

"Are you whistling at me, Lopez-Fitzgerald?" she asked cunningly as she stood up and put her hands on her hips.

"Mmm hmm. I am."

"Is that any way for an officer of the law to behave? Do you whistle at all the girls when you're on the job?"

Luis grinned at her. "Nope, just you. Have I told you lately how beautiful you are?" He saw her trying to be serious but soon a big smile spread across her face. He loved how cute she was.

"Where's your mother, Luis? I want to thank her for raising you the way she did. You're so sweet." She stepped closer to him and kissed him sweetly. He gave her another boyish grin and she felt her heart flutter.

She laid down on the blanket to get some sun and Luis took off his shirt and laid down beside her and propped himself up on one elbow. Sheridan sat up quickly and fumbled through her bag and pulled out a bottle of tanning lotion. She began to apply it, but Luis took it from her.

"Let me." Sheridan smiled at him and rolled over onto her stomach so he could rub the lotion on her back. He put some lotion in his hands and slowly and gently began to apply it to her skin. His hands glided up and down her back rubbing the lotion in and he felt her relax under his touch.

"You know, you're really good at that Luis. I may have to keep you around after all," Sheridan said playfully.

"Good, because I'm not going anywhere." Luis leaned down and kissed her on the cheek.

"I'm glad, but sweetie, I mean this in the nicest possible way…GET OUT OF MY SUN!" Luis just laughed and laid back down beside her.

About a half hour later, Sheridan was getting ready to flip over to get some sun on her stomach. She looked over at Luis and saw him sleeping. She quietly reached for her water bottle and opened it. She stood up and poured some of the ice cold water on his chest. His eyes shot open and he jumped up to a sitting position. "SHERIDAN! THAT'S FREEZING!" Sheridan giggled at him and shrugged her shoulders.

"You looked hot," she said innocently. Luis pretended to be mad.

"I'm going to get you for that."

"Yeah? I'd like to see you try." Sheridan smiled at him and then took off running.

Luis sprung to his feet and chased after her. In no time he caught up to her and picked her up and tossed her over his shoulder. She was laughing and squealing. "Luiiiis! Put me down!"

"No way." He walked towards the ocean carrying her over his shoulder. "It looks like you need some cooling off too, missy."

Sheridan kept laughing and begged him not to throw her in, but she realized it was no use. She was going in the ocean. Luis walked out and tossed her in and watched the small wave wash over her. He stood and laughed as she fumbled to get her balance and stand up. He turned to walk away when he heard her call out.

"Luis! I twisted my ankle." He turned around and saw her standing on one leg and a pained expression on her face."

Luis felt terrible. "Sheridan, I'm so sorry." He rushed out to her to carry her back in, but when he reached her she swung her leg behind his knees and pushed him into the water. She stood and watched him get knocked over by the wave. When he came up he saw her smirking at him.

"God you're easy," she said laughing at him.

"No fair. You played the injured card," Luis said as he began to pout. Sheridan kneeled down in the water to be eye level with him.

"Aww, poor baby. I'm sorry." She leaned towards him to kiss him but he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her down into the water with him.

"Now who's easy?"

Sheridan and Luis both started laughing and he kissed her. They stood up and walked hand in hand back to their blanket. "Hey, I have something for you," Sheridan told Luis.

"You do?"

"Yep. Close your eyes." Luis did as he was told. Sheridan got in her bag and found the small box that had his present inside. "Hold out your hands." Luis stuck his hands out and Sheridan placed the box in them.

Luis opened his eyes and saw the small box in his hands. He smiled and opened it up. Inside he found a fake tattoo. He looked up and had a confused look on his face.

"Look more closely at it."

He looked at it and read what it said. It was a heart shaped tattoo and inside it said 'Property of Sheridan Crane. Please return in good condition.' He started laughing. "What's this for, Sherry?"

"It's for the Harmony Hunk Auction. If for some unseen reason I should lose the bidding, whoever does buy you will know that you belong to me!"

"Harmony Hunk Auction? No way! I'm not doing that."

"Come on Luis. It's for charity. I think that some of the proceeds are going to the Youth Center. You wouldn't want those kids to suffer now would you…all because you didn't want to be someone's slave for a day?" Sheridan batted her eyes at him and he found it terribly hard to resist.

"Of course I don't." He was still reluctant to agree to anything yet.

"I plan on winning you and I promise I won't be too hard of a slave driver," she said with a playful smile.

"Oh alright. I'll do it." He was powerless to say no to her.

Sheridan jumped up and down excitedly and hugged him. She kissed his cheek and whispered in his ear, "I'll make it worth your while tonight." Luis smiled and wrapped his arms tighter around her.

They made their way over to the booth to get Luis entered in the auction. Grace was running the booth and was glad to see him entering. She handed Luis his number and Sheridan grabbed him by the hand and led him over to where the other "slaves" were standing. She had applied his tattoo to his left shoulder. She kissed his cheek. "Knock 'em dead, baby!" She smiled at him and left to go stand with Theresa who was amazed that she got Luis to do something like this.

Luis looked over and saw Theresa and Sheridan giggling about something and he felt like a schmuck…but he looked around and saw that Miguel and Ethan were entered as well and he didn't feel so bad. He made his way over to them and they talked about how stupid they felt knowing they were being sold to their girlfriends. Miguel noticed his tattoo and started laughing.
"What?" Luis asked, knowing full well he wasn't going to hear the end of this.

"You are SO whipped. I can't believe you let her put that thing on you!" Miguel was rolling and Ethan joined in on the fun.

"Oh shut up!" Luis spit out.

The auction was about to begin and the men were led onto the stage. There was an abundance of applause and yells from the women in the audience and Luis felt like an ass. 'It's a good thing I love her so much, because there is no way in hell I'd be up here otherwise.' He took his place on stage and tried not to laugh at this whole spectacle. Sam Bennett was the first one being auctioned off and he drew lots of cheers and he cost Grace a lot of money to win him. A few more were auctioned off and then Theresa bought Ethan and Kay bought Miguel. It was his turn and as he walked to the front of the stage, he searched the audience for Sheridan, but he couldn't find her anywhere.

'Where are you Sheridan?' he thought nervously. The auctioneer began the bidding and the price for him was rising rapidly and her familiar blonde head was nowhere to be found. He noticed that the bidding was now between two women…Beth, which alone made his skin crawl, and a redhead he didn't recognize. 'Damn, Sheridan…where are you?' The redhead ended up bidding $500 for him and Luis did one last frantic search for his girlfriend in hopes that she would outbid this complete stranger. He didn't see her and he heard the auctioneer shout "SOLD!" Luis faked a smile as the redheaded woman walked over to claim her "prize." Luis felt nauseous and he was going to have a long talk with Sheridan the first chance he had. He saw the woman stop at the auctioneer and whisper something in his ear.

He looked up and made an announcement. "Ladies and gentlemen, this lovely little lady here just made a request to kiss her slave." Luis felt his eyes get as big as saucers and started shaking his head.

"No way! Sheridan will kill me!" He heard a lot of 'Just do it!' and 'It's for charity.' Luis sighed heavily. He reluctantly walked over to her and she leaned in closely to him. She pulled down her sunglasses and he saw her eyes. They were her eyes.

"Ponch, you didn't really think I'd let a total stranger buy you and then proceed to kiss you now did you?" Sheridan asked grinning. Luis felt his lips turn up into a huge smile and he decided to give the crowd something to talk about. He wrapped his arms around her, leaned her back and gave her one hell of a kiss. When they stood up they saw everyone standing with their mouths gaping open. They laughed and Luis pulled off Sheridan's red wig. The crowd started clapping and she grabbed his hand and led him off the stage.

They walked away from the crowd and Luis was grinning from ear to ear. He stopped and turned her to face him. "You never cease to amaze me you know that?" He saw a bashful smile playing on her face and she glanced down. "To think that I was mad because you made me do this and you weren't anywhere to be found…it was you all along."

"I told you that I'd win. I just didn't say how," she said coyly, tilting her head to the side.

He wrapped his arms around her and picked her up and spun her around in circles. She was giggling at him. "I love you so much, Sheridan."

"I love you too." He put her down and looked into her eyes. "Now, where's the rest of that kiss? You are my slave after all." Luis smiled widely at her.

"I'm happy to oblige!" He placed a tender kiss on her mouth and it quickly turned passionate. Realizing they were on a public beach, they reluctantly pulled away from each other.

"That was some kiss, Luis." Sheridan looked up at him and smiled. "I think as my slave you'll be doing lots of that. I hope you don't mind."

Luis chuckled at her. "Not at all."

They spent the rest of the day on the beach getting some sun and playing in the water. It was almost time for the luau to start and Sheridan left to get ready while Luis helped set things up. He grabbed a beer out of the cooler and sat down at a table. He was thinking about how wonderful the day had been, and knowing Sheridan like he did, he was sure there were more wonderful surprises in store for him. Miguel and Ethan came over to the table and had a seat as they couldn't find their girlfriends either.

"Luis, I can't believe what Sheridan did today. She's something else isn't she?" Miguel asked.

"You got that right," he said with a laugh. "That woman is always full of surprises."

The three of them continued to talk when they heard the music start up and an announcement was made that it was time to get the luau underway. They looked around for their girlfriends, but they weren't anywhere to be found. Miguel saw them up front and nudged Ethan and Luis. Luis looked up and saw Sheridan and the others dancing the hula. His mouth dropped open upon seeing what she was wearing. She had on a white bikini top and a red and white Hawaiian sarong that tied around her waist. She also had several flower leis around her neck and a small flower in her hair. She was gorgeous and Luis was captivated by her presence as usual. Watching her dance was driving him crazy. He caught her eye and she smiled at him. He was sure he was beaming at her and she slowly danced her way over to him as did Theresa and Kay to their respective dates.

Sheridan continued her dance and took one of her leis from around her neck and placed it on Luis. When the song was over, everyone was clapping and Luis couldn't stop staring at her. She kissed his cheek and sat in the chair next to him. "Hey you."

"Hey," Luis replied. "You look unbelievable!" Sheridan raised her eyebrows.

"Yeah?" Luis nodded excitedly which made her giggle.

"You don't look so bad yourself. I am willing to bet you didn't know we were dancing tonight…am I right?"

"That's right. As usual, you managed to surprise me. I'm so lucky to have you for a girlfriend. Stay here, I'll be right back." Sheridan agreed and waited on him to return.

Luis came back a few minutes later carrying a drink in a coconut shell for her in one hand and a camera in the other. He handed the drink to her. "Here you go."

"Thank you." Sheridan sipped the fruity drink and looked up to find Luis staring at her again. She laughed. "What?"

"Smile," he said playfully as he held up the camera. Sheridan rolled her eyes but indulged him. She brushed a stray piece of hair from her eyes and smiled sweetly at him as he snapped the picture. "Perfect. Thanks honey."

"Sure. You know what? I think it's time we got out of here."

"Why?"

Sheridan gave him a devilish grin. "I think it's time I got some return on my investment." She stood up and held out her hands for Luis. Luis blushed and gave her a quick smile. He grabbed her hands and they walked away from the luau. They found a secluded part of the beach and stopped. "This looks good."

"Oh it does. And what might you have in mind, Miss Crane?" Luis asked knowingly.

"This." She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him in for a deep kiss. Luis wrapped his arms around her and rubbed her back. She lifted her head and looked him in the eyes. "I love you, Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald…so much." Luis felt like he could explode from the amount of happiness he had in him.

"Sheridan Crane, I love you more than anything in this world." She kissed him again and pulled him down to the sand where they made love.

**End Flashback**

Luis smiled at her picture and ran his hand across her face. He knew he would never forget that day. He looked at his watch and decided that he had worked enough for the night. He wasn't getting anything accomplished anyway because his thoughts were consumed with her. All he wanted to do was see his beautiful bride-to-be. Luis packed up some of his belongings and bid farewell to the guys at the station and told them he would see them at the wedding.

Sheridan had watched the movie and she loved it so much that she rewound the tape and started to watch it again. The movie made her think about how Luis was her prince and he rescued her from the evil grip of her family. She looked at the clock and realized that Luis wouldn't be home for another hour or so. She yawned and decided she could catch a quick nap on the couch while she waited.

Luis turned the key in the door and walked into the apartment. He saw 'Ever After' on the TV and smiled. He knew how much Sheridan loved that movie. He threw his keys on the counter and walked into the living room where he saw Sheridan sleeping peacefully on the couch. He noticed that she was wearing her genie PJs. A small smiled crept up on his face. He teased her at first but secretly he loved when she wore those to bed. He hated to wake her, but he hadn't seen her all week. 'At least she doesn't have to work in the morning.' Luis kneeled down beside her and lightly brushed her face with his finger. She didn't respond at first so he did it again. Still sleeping, she reached up and rubbed her face where Luis had ran his finger. Luis tried not to laugh. He did it one more time and Sheridan opened her eyes.

"Luis?" She whispered sleepily.

"Hi."

Sheridan stretched out on the couch and yawned. "I'm so glad you're home. I was watching a movie and didn't think you'd be home so early, so I decided to catch a quick nap."

"I had to see you. I couldn't wait any longer." Luis was tracing lines on her stomach with his index finger. "I see you're Jeanie tonight," he said smiling.

"Mmm hmm. How was work?" she asked running her fingers through his hair.

"Good. I'm just glad I get to spend some time with you tonight."

"Me too baby…me too. You have no idea how much I missed you this week." Luis smiled and kissed her.

"Yeah? How much?" Sheridan gave him a sly smile.

"Come here and I'll show you."

Luis gently laid his body on top of hers and she kissed him. He lifted his head to look at her. "Hey Sheridan?"

"Yeah?"

"Will you sing 'Genie in a Bottle' for me?" he asked with a stifled grin. She smacked him playfully on the arm and started laughing.

"You're so cute, Ponch. It's no wonder I love you so much." She pulled him back down to her and they resumed their quality time together.
