Chapter 1:
Sheridan glanced at Luis from across the crowded room. He hadn’t noticed her yet. He looked so handsome in his tux, Sheridan thought. She couldn’t take her eyes off him. Sheridan was so glad she had decided to attend the Policeman’s Benefit. Ethan had convinced her to go. Although Sheridan knew, she hadn’t needed much convincing. She knew Luis would be there, and she wanted to be in the same room with him.
Sheridan had taken extra care in getting ready. She wore a strapless, form-fitting red gown – sure to get the man of her dream’s attention. She knew she looked fabulous, she only regretted the occurrences of earlier that day at the Youth Center.
***FLASHBACK***
She had gone to the Youth Center to talk to Luis, but instead, had run into Hank. Does he plan these things, she wondered. Every time I am about to be alone with Luis, Hank shows up.
“Sheridan! How’s my favorite girl?”
Why does he always refer to me as his girl? “Oh, hi Hank, have you seen Luis?” “What! Aren’t you happy to see me?”
“Sure, I’m sorry. How are you, Hank?”
“Well, I have the best news! I’ve been offered a temporary position in Europe.”
“Wow, Hank that sounds great.” Maybe with Hank gone, Luis and I can actually be alone, Sheridan thought. “I thought that maybe you might like to join me.” “What? Uh… that sure is nice of you to think of me Hank, but …I can’t.”
“Why not Sheridan? You love Europe and you haven’t been there in months. And wouldn’t it be great to share the experience with someone?”
Sure Hank, but I …I’m not done with my community service yet and I can’t disappoint the kids here. And…, with Ethan being engaged now, I want to be here for him.”
“I’m not going to take no that easily. Why don’t we talk over dinner tonight? Say 7:00 at the Lobster Shack?
“I don’t ... I don’t think I can make it tonight.”
“Alright, Sheridan well, if you change your mind you can call me. How about a hug from my good luck charm?” Before Sheridan could open her mouth, Hank had wrapped his arms around her in a tight embrace.
At that moment, Luis walked in holding a bouquet of wildflowers he had bought for Sheridan. Luis looked stunned for a moment, and then mumbled I’m sorry and turned and hurriedly left the room. Sheridan broke free from Hank and ran after him. “Luis! Wait….” Sheridan opened the door of the Youth Center and stepped outside. Luis was nowhere in sight, but she did notice the wildflowers lying on the ground. Oh, Luis, she thought to herself, why does this always happen.
Luis noticed the striking blonde in the tight red dress and knew immediately that it was Sheridan, even though he could not see her face. A smile slowly spread across his face. The memory of what happened earlier faded from his mind. He couldn’t take his eyes off her.
After a moment, Sheridan turned around and instantly her eyes traveled to Luis’ side of the room. Their eyes met. Luis grinned and lifted his hand to wave at Sheridan. She started to walk towards him. Her heart fluttered as he rose from his chair. Their attraction was like a magnet pulling them together from across opposite sides of the room. They met in the middle of the room, huge grins on their faces. They both tried to say hi at the same moment.
“Sheridan what are you doing here? I mean, it’s a pleasant surprise, but…” “Well, the Crane family has to be represented at every function, you know…,” she stopped when she noticed the disappointed look on his face, “...but, I wanted to see you Luis.” “Why don’t you come join me at my table?”
“I’d love to!” Sheridan blushed slightly. That may have sounded a little too excited, she thought.
Luis offered her his arm and Sheridan gladly accepted. When they reached Luis’ table, the benefit speaker was just about to begin. While the speaker was droning on about the future of the police force, Luis could barley pay attention. He kept sneaking glances at Sheridan. He thought to himself, she is so beautiful, so unlike any woman he had ever had feelings for before.
Sheridan’s thoughts were somewhere else entirely. She seemed to be staring off into space, a dreamy look on her face. She was imagining herself in Luis’ strong arms. She knew she was having more and more of these same daydreams, but she had realized why – she was falling for Luis. And why not, she thought, Luis is a wonderful, honest guy.
“Sheridan…Sheridan…” Luis interrupted her thoughts.
“Oh… what…”
Luis laughed. “I was wondering if you wanted something from the bar?”
“Yes…could you get me a glass of chardonnay?”
“Sure thing, Miss Crane.”
She smiled and watched as he walked towards the bar, stopping occasionally to speak with some of the other guests. He is so thoughtful. I shouldn’t hide my feelings or be so nervous around him. Music had started to play and some of the other guests were heading towards the dance floor.
At the bar, the bartender asked Luis, “Is that Sheridan Crane sitting next to you at your table?”
Luis looked back at his table, only to be met with the adoring gaze of Sheridan. “Yeah, who’d have thought,” he said sheepishly.
“Are you two dating?” “Uhh…no, but maybe,…..I just saw her sitting alone and asked her to join me.” The bartender smiled and nodded, and handed Luis the drinks. “Thanks,” Luis mumbled, his back turned and his glance already focused on Sheridan as he crossed the room. When he got back to the table, Sheridan stood up confidently. “Luis, would you like to dance with me?”
“Yes,” Luis smiled. He set the drinks on the table.
Sheridan slipped her hand into Luis’ and he led her to the dance floor. Luis turned around and pulled her close to him. Sheridan instantly smiled. Her bright blue eyes sparkled. Luis couldn’t help but smile back at her. He thought to himself, she is the most beautiful, amazing woman I have ever seen. That is all he wanted to do when she was around – smile and hold her and kiss her. No words were exchanged between them, as Sheridan rested her head on Luis’ chest. There was not an inch of space between the two of them. Both of them had their eyes closed, just enjoying the moment. They both thought to themselves, this felt right.
The song had ended and a fast song had begun; yet Sheridan and Luis were still wrapped up in each other’s arms, still swaying. After a moment, they both pulled apart slightly, realizing what had happened. The smile had never left either of their faces. They continued dancing the rest of the evening, paying attention only to each other.
A few minutes after 1:00 a.m., the lights flickered on in the banquet hall.
“I’m so glad I saw you here tonight, Sheridan. You made my this stuffy, boring benefit so much more enjoyable,” Luis grinned as they headed back to the table. “Well, I’m glad that I got to spend the evening with you, dancing. Unfortunately for me, I don’t know if I will be able to walk tomorrow! My feet are killing me!” “We’ll just have to do something that doesn’t involve you on your feet.” Luis said with a sexy smile. He immediately reddened and couldn’t believe he had said that thought aloud. He glanced at Sheridan. She had her head down and she was blushing. “I mean … like going to a movie… or something…” Luis stuttered. Sheridan raised her head, still blushing, but she was smiling.
“Luis, do you think that you could give me a ride home? My driver was supposed to pick me up at 11:00, and I called him and told him I wasn’t ready to leave?” “Of course, Sheridan,” Luis grinned, taking her by the arm and leading her to his Jeep. They rode to Sheridan’s cottage mostly in silence, occasionally stealing glances at one another when they thought the other was not looking. Luis was still slightly embarrassed for letting his thought come out. Luis stopped the car in front of the cottage and turned to Sheridan.
“Sheridan, I’m sorry…”
“Thank you for driving me home,” Sheridan interrupted. “Maybe, ... if you would like, we could…go see a movie tomorrow.”
Luis grinned at her, making her heart beat faster in her chest. “I would really like that Sheridan.” He started to get out of the car to walk her to her door.
“You don’t have to, Luis. I’ll be fine.”
“I want to,” Luis said softly as he got out of the car and hurried around to open Sheridan’s door. He had a warm feeling inside as she slid her hand down his arm to his hand. He thought to himself, God her skin is so silky, I just want to hold her in my arms all night. They arrived at her door and Sheridan turned to Luis.
“Thank you for showing me such a nice time at the benefit and for the ride home. Would you like to come in?” she inquired, rather hopefully.
“No, thanks for the offer though. I better get home. Momma worries when she knows I am not home,” Luis smiled, inwardly regretting his response. Inside, he knew that he wanted to stay with her longer.
“I guess then, … I will see you in the morning,” she said as she turned and unlocked her cottage door. Luis hesitated, growing somewhat nervous around her.
“Goodnight, Sheridan,” he said softly.
She paused for a moment, and then Sheridan turned quickly and stepped towards him. She felt her heart jump and she knew that before she lost her nerve she had to kiss him. Quickly she reached up and kissed him lightly on the lips. He returned her advance equally as lightly. Sheridan pulled apart and looked at him directly into his dark, sparkling eyes and smiled.
“Good night Luis,” she whispered as she turned and entered her cottage, but not before giving him one more smile. Luis turned and headed back towards his Jeep. He had this wonderful feeling that they were about to start something amazing, and he couldn’t wait to get home to go to sleep, so he could dream about her. Then, he thought to himself, when I wake up I will see her again. He got in his Jeep and headed to his family’s house.
On the other side of the door, Sheridan walked towards her bedroom. Almost in a trance from her happiness, she took off her gown, laid it on a chair and climbed into bed. She wanted the morning to come as quickly as possible so she could once again be with the man of her dreams.

Chapter 2:
Early morning rays of sunlight peeked through the curtains and into Sheridan’s bedroom. She was still lying in bed, half asleep, with a slight smile on her face. I just had the most wonderful dreams, Sheridan thought to herself. She had dreamt of Luis holding her in his arms and waking up next to her.
“Maybe, my dreams will come true,” Sheridan whispered, as she recalled her encounter with Luis last night. “I wonder when he will call,” she smiled.
Sheridan climbed out of bed and headed for the shower, taking the phone with her, not wanting to miss a call from Luis.
At almost the exact time, across town, Luis was getting out of the shower. He had lie awake most of the night, trying to think of something special to do with Sheridan. He knew that things had changed between them last night, both seemed willing to take the next step towards a relationship. I get the most wonderful feeling inside whenever I am around her, he thought. Suddenly, he had the best idea of how to spend their day together, but it would take a little planning. He hurriedly dried himself off, got dressed, and picked up the phone.
Sheridan had just stepped into the shower when she heard the phone ring. She jumped out and grabbed the phone.
“Hello,” she said softly.
“Hey, it’s Luis. Good morning. Did you sleep okay?”
Sheridan’s heartbeat quickened at the sound of his voice.
“Oh, I slept wonderfully. It was the best sleep I’ve had in quite some time,” Sheridan answered. Because of you, she silently added.
“Me too,” Luis replied. “Are we still on for today?”
“Well, I guess I can free up some of my day for you,” she teased.
“If you’re sure,” Luis laughed. “How about I stop by and pick you up in an hour or so?”
“That sounds perfect, but where are we going this afternoon?” Sheridan asked.
“What do you mean afternoon?” Luis questioned, “I have the whole day planned out for us. It’s a surprise.”
“Really!?” Sheridan exclaimed. Her voice was filled with excitement. He is so sweet, she thought. In her mind Luis was getting more and more perfect by the minute.
“Is that okay?” Luis asked hesitantly.
“Of course,” Sheridan replied happily.
“Okay then, I’ll be there in an hour and a half.”
“See you then,” Sheridan smiled, as she hung up the telephone. Closing her eyes, she pictured his gorgeous face smiling at her. She couldn’t wait to see Luis. She opened her eyes, realizing the short amount of time she had to get make herself look perfect, and hopped back into the shower.
As soon as Luis hung up the phone, he gathered a few things from the house and rushed out to his Jeep. He only had a little over an hour to get his surprise ready for Sheridan, and he wanted everything to be perfect. Luis pulled out of his driveway and headed towards town, anxiously awaiting the day.
Sheridan leaned against the wall of her shower, letting the stream of water run over her body, and closed her eyes. She smiled to herself. In her mind she pictured Luis standing there in the shower with her, his muscular body glistening under the water. She imagined his arms reaching towards her, grabbing her, and pulling her close to him. Sheridan inhaled sharply, as if she could actually feel his hands touching her.
She opened her eyes, almost expecting to see Luis right in front of her. Well, she thought, you never know what might happen later. A little frown took the place of her smile, as she started washing her hair. If only people would quit getting in the way – Julian, my father, Hank, Beth – Luis and I could be together without any problems, Sheridan thought, and continued with her shower.
Sheridan had already chosen the perfect outfit for the day. She had decided late last night as she had been trying to fall asleep. She stepped into a pair of khaki capri pants, with small dangling turquoise beads at the bottom, and a knit turquoise halter-top. She checked her appearance in the mirror and slid on her sandals. Her look, as usual, was sexy, yet sophisticated. Those extra hours she had spent with her personal trainer had paid off. Her halter-top accentuated her perfectly toned arms and back. Her tan also enhanced her physical form and her pale blonde hair. The turquoise in her top made her blue eyes seem even brighter. She smiled, pleased with her reflection.
Noticing that she only had 15 minutes to finish getting ready, Sheridan rushed to her vanity and began applying her make-up. Not needing much, she was finished quickly and began expertly styling her hair. Just as she was adding one last swipe of pale pink blush to her already perfect face, Sheridan heard a knock at her door.
“Luis,” she smiled setting down her makeup and running over to the door. She paused, smoothing her hair and checking her reflection in the mirror one last time, before opening the door. Satisfied with her appearance, Sheridan threw open the door.
“Hey…,” Sheridan started, “Hank?”
“Hi gorgeous,” Hank gushed.
“What are you doing here?” Sheridan asked, looking mildly disappointed.
“I came to say good-bye. You know, I’m leaving for Europe tomorrow and I wanted to see you before I left. Possibly to convince you to come with me?” Hank questioned hopefully.
Sheridan turned her head slightly and rolled her eyes, irritated by his cocky attitude. “Hank, you know I can’t leave…”
“Because of Ethan’s wedding,” Hank interrupted.
“Not only that, but I…”Sheridan paused, exasperated. She took a deep breath, she knew she had to get this over with at some point. “I consider you my friend, but that’s where it stops. I’m sorry, but I just don’t feel anything else towards you.”
Sheridan noticed the smile fading from Hank’s face as she said the words she knew would disappoint him.
“Hank, you’ll have a great time in Europe,” Sheridan smiled, putting her hand on Hank’s arm. “And, who knows, you might meet someone interesting while you’re there.”
“No way, you’re the only one for…,” Hank began.
“What’s going on?” a voice questioned from the doorway.
Sheridan dropped her hand from Hank’s arm. She turned, words escaping her momentarily, as she stared at the handsome man before her.
“Luis,” she smiled, “you’re late. Hank just stopped by to say good-bye. He’s going out of town for a while.”
“Sorry,” Luis apologized for his lateness, “I had a few last minute things to take care of before I picked you up.”
Luis smiled at her, almost forgetting that Hank was in the room. God, she looks absolutely amazing, he thought.
“Shall we leave,” Sheridan said, grabbing her purse. “I’m so excited to find out where we’re going.”
“Hey!…What’s going on here?” Hank demanded.
“Oh Hank, I’m sorry, have a great trip. Drop me a line or something, while you’re there,” Sheridan said as she pushed him towards the door.
Luis stood back grinning to himself.
“Bye Hank, have a good trip buddy,” Luis said as he followed Sheridan and Hank out the cottage door.
“Well Hank, we’d love to see you off, but Luis and I have plans,” Sheridan explained. She was so happy to say that to Hank. Maybe now he’ll get the clue, she thought. She gave him one last wave and then grabbed Luis’ hand.
Luis led Sheridan to his Jeep, opened the door and helped her up into it. He walked around to the other side and climbed up, a huge grin on his face the entire time. He honked the horn at Hank and drove away.
Hank stood by the cottage in absolute awe. Inside he was seething. My best buddy, yeah whatever, he thought.
“I can’t believe that bastard is trying to steal MY woman. He knows that Sheridan and I belong together. Maybe I won’t be going to Europe after all. Let’s see if Luis can handle a little manly competition,” Hank laughed as he spoke.
“He will never know what hit him and in no time, Sheridan will be all mine,” Hank smirked, with an eerie look in his eyes, as he headed towards his car.

Chapter 3:
“What are you smiling about?” Luis asked.
Sheridan laughed, recalling the shocked expression on Hank’s face, “Oh,… nothing much. …So, where are we going?”
“You’ll find out soon enough,” Luis started. “I’m sorry I forgot to tell you earlier, but… you look… amazing.” Luis finished, searching for the most appropriate word to describe her.
Sheridan blushed, “Thank you, I was thinking the same thing about you.”
Luis did look extremely sexy, but then when didn’t he? He had on a tight, black short-sleeved shirt and a pair of lightweight gray pants. His defined body was evident through his clothing, causing Sheridan’s eyes to continually wander towards him.
Sheridan turned in her seat, glancing in the back. She noticed a large blanket spread out over the backseat of the Jeep, which caused her to grin. She had a feeling today’s surprise was going to be romantic.
For 30 minutes, they drove listening only to the radio. Sheridan began to get increasingly curious as to where their destination was.
“How much longer?” Sheridan whined, not really impatient, but hoping he would tell her where they were going.
Luis laughed at her with a sparkle in his eye, “We’ll be there in about 10 minutes.”
Harmony’s neighboring town, Midlands, was home to one of the most beautiful parks in the state. Luis drove thru the entrance to the park and parked the Jeep near the top of a hill overlooking a lake. He got out and reached into the back and began unloading the Jeep.
“Would you like any help?” Sheridan asked as she got out of the Jeep.
“Actually, all I need you to do is take this blanket, spread it out under that tree over there and sit down,” Luis said while continuing to unload the Jeep.
Sheridan did as Luis asked and after a few moments Luis joined her, his arms full.
“What’s all this!” Sheridan exclaimed.
“We are going to have a picnic lunch. I hope you are hungry!” Luis grinned.
“Actually, I am kind of hungry. What did you bring?” Sheridan questioned eagerly.
Luis handed her the picnic basket with a sexy smile. She opened the basket and peered inside. Inside the basket was a fruit salad, sandwiches, potato salad, homemade chocolate chip cookies, and a large container of lemonade.
“Wow! You thought of everything! How did you know all of my favorite foods?” Sheridan asked.
“I got a little help from someone who knows you well,” Luis admitted.
“Your mother?” Sheridan guessed. “Well, you chose a good helper. Pilar knows all of my favorites.”
Sheridan opened the container of fruit salad and started eating.
“This is delicious Luis. Did your mother put this together?”
Luis looked at her with a hurt expression on his face.
“Don’t you think I can make a few sandwiches and a fruit salad on my own?” he teased her. “I cleaned and cut that fruit all by myself, I’ll have you know.”
Sheridan glanced up at him through her thick eyelashes with her lips slightly parted.
“I think…that this is the most wonderful lunch I have ever had. It’s perfect.”
Luis could barely pay attention to what he was eating. He was affected by her the way he never had been by any other woman. He couldn’t take his eyes off her, and he nearly spilled his lemonade down the front of his shirt. After the two of them had finished their meal and Luis had cleaned up the leftovers, he cleared his throat.
“You know,…I’ve been meaning to ask you…” Luis stalled.
“Ask me what?” Sheridan inquired.
“Never mind.” Luis said softly.
“No, go on, ask me.” Sheridan insisted.
“Well, I … overheard you talking to Hank, right before I interrupted you two…,” Luis started.
“Which I’m glad you did.” Sheridan added with a laugh.
The nervous look on Luis’ face turned into a grin.
“I was just wondering if you meant what you said about only considering Hank…just a friend? I mean…do you…” Luis questioned.
Sheridan sighed with relief, so happy that Luis had figured out the truth, along with Hank.
“Yes, Hank is only my friend. He could never be anything more.” Sheridan said, hoping that she had emphasized “never” enough.
“Well, I’ve seen… uhh…I’ve seen you and Hank in some situations that made me believe you felt something for him,” Luis stammered.
Sheridan laughed lightly, “Those were all just misunderstandings, and trust me, very bad timing.”
“So… you don’t feel anything more than friendship towards Hank,” Luis repeated with a sigh of relief.
“ Nothing more than friends,” Sheridan confirmed. She smiled at his nervousness. She thought his behavior was extremely cute.
Luis felt like bursting inside. He was shocked at the wave of relief he felt, knowing that Sheridan only considered Hank a friend, and all those awkward moments he had witnessed were simply mistakes. Luis suddenly stood up and pulled Sheridan up off the ground. “Let’s go for a walk,” he said still holding her hand.
The two of them headed down the hill towards the path that surrounded a lake. The path merged away from the lake and the two headed in that direction, which ended up near a small playground.
“You know, I don’t think I’ve ever been to a public playground before,” Sheridan mentioned.
“What! What kind of childhood did you have?” Luis teased her. “Come on,” he said grabbing her hand, not noticing the sad, distant look on Sheridan’s face, as he pulled her towards the playground.
They spent the remainder of the afternoon pushing each other on the swings, feeding the ducks by the lake, and sharing an ice cream cone.
“I don’t know when’s the last time I had so much fun,” Sheridan exclaimed, her face slightly flushed.
“It feels good to just let loose and act like a kid again, doesn’t it?” Luis asked.
Sheridan’s face suddenly became sad again.
“My childhood was so much different than yours. I didn’t really get to be a child. I was always expected to be so reserved and mature,” she explained, her voice getting more upset. “I wish I could have just had a normal childhood. If only…”
“Hey,” Luis interrupted softly, touching her arm, “don’t get upset. Anytime you want to go to the playground and run around, you let me know. I’ll be happy to take you,” he smiled, hoping to cheer her up.
Sheridan looked at him and smiled, “Thanks Luis.”
“Now hurry up! We don’t want to miss the show.”
When they reached the blanket, they both sat down facing the lake. The sun had already set and it was just beginning to get dark. Suddenly, the sounds of Mozart’s piano classic, “Turkish Rondo,” filled the nighttime air. The fountain in the middle of the lake came to life and the lights surrounding the fountain caused it’s cascading streams to change colors.
Luis had situated himself to be more comfortable, leaning back on his elbows. Sheridan had also noticed he had edged closer to her, and she felt the warm tingle on her skin as their arms brushed against each other. They sat and watched the remainder of the fountain show.
After the fountain show was over, Sheridan lay down on her back and stared up at the star-filled sky.
“Wow, I feel so relaxed and peaceful,” she sighed.
“Haven’t you ever come up here? They have this every night of the week during the summer.” Luis mentioned.
“Is this where you bring all your dates Luis?” Sheridan teased.
“No,” Luis insisted. “This is where I used to come with my family all of the time. Mama loves to come here.” Luis turned to lie on his side, bringing himself closer to Sheridan. “To tell you the truth, you’re the first date that I’ve ever brought here.”
Sheridan held her breath, while he stared into her eyes for a brief, but intense moment. Suddenly, Sheridan shivered and goose bumps formed on her bare arms, as a cool breeze rustled through the trees.
“Are you cold?” Luis asked her.
“No,…not really,” Sheridan said hesitantly, inwardly aching to be in his arms.
“Come here,” Luis said as he leaned back on his back and pulled her near him. He put his arm around her and she rested her head on his shoulder.
“That’s much better,” Sheridan whispered.
The two of them stayed in that position, just enjoying the close proximity of each other.
It was almost two in the morning when Luis parked his Jeep in front of Sheridan’s cottage. He got out and opened her door. He gave her his hand to help her out and she intertwined her fingers with his as they walked to the porch.
“I know today wasn’t very fancy, but I hope you had a good time,” Luis said in a low voice. “I know I did.”
“Luis, it was better than good, it was absolutely perfect. No one has ever shown me a better time,” Sheridan said, her eyes sparkling. I never want it to end, she added silently.
“You know,” Sheridan continued softly, “I don’t need an expensive evening to make me happy. All I need is to be with someone I really care about.” She stared up at him, her blue eyes filled with passion.
He returned her gaze ever so intensely, and raised his hand to her face. Luis gently ran his fingers along her jaw line and up to her mouth. Sheridan parted her mouth slightly and kissed his fingers.
“Sheridan, any day would be perfect, if I spent it with you,” Luis whispered, sliding his hand to the back of her neck.
Never taking their eyes off one another, their faces slowly moved closer together. Sheridan tilted her head up to meet Luis’, their mouths less than an inch apart.
“Kiss me,” Sheridan mouthed.
Within a second their mouths met. Sheridan slid her hands up Luis’ arms, her entire body tingling with pleasure from this one intense kiss. It only lasted for a minute, but both felt something they had never felt before. It was the most amazing kiss either of them had ever experienced.
When they parted, Luis let out a sigh of contentment, and rested his forehead against Sheridan’s. His arms had dropped to her waist, their bodies pressed closely together. Sheridan’s arms were now wrapped around Luis’ neck and they stood in this position for a moment, starring into each other’s eyes. Neither one knew exactly what to say, but suddenly Sheridan’s face broke into a huge smile.
“Wow! That was …” she started, but Luis never let her finish, as he reached down to touch his lips to hers. Luis was the one to part the kiss, and he reluctantly let go of Sheridan and stepped back.
“I hate to tell you this, but I have to be at the station in about… four hours, so I need to go home and catch a few hours of sleep,” Luis said regretfully.
“Well, okay, if you have to go,” Sheridan responded in a husky voice. “Call me tomorrow?”
“You bet. Sweet dreams,” he murmured as he reached in to give her one more quick kiss.
With that he turned and walked to his Jeep. He watched as she opened her cottage door and went inside. As he pulled away, he turned to catch a glimpse of her once more, and saw her standing at the window watching him leave.
As Luis was driving home, he touched his lips, remembering their kisses and the day they spent together. Luis had no idea how he was going to be able to get through the workday, when all he wanted to do was spend his time with Sheridan.

Chapter 4:
Luis sat at his desk at the police station, staring into his coffee cup and then glanced at the telephone. He wondered if Sheridan was still asleep. His hand moved towards the phone, but then stopped. She’s probably still in bed, Luis thought. Luis grinned at that thought. Just as he was imagining himself in bed with Sheridan, Sam interrupted his thoughts.
“What has you in such a good mood, this morning?” Sam asked.
Luis’ grin got even bigger. “I was just thinking about…” Luis started.
“Let me guess,” Sam interrupted, “Sheridan Crane.”
“Is it that obvious?” Luis asked, a little surprised that his thoughts were that readable. Sam laughed. “You know Luis, you have absent-mindedly mentioned Sheridan to me about ten times already this morning, and I’ve only been here for an hour.” Sam explained, his amusement showing.
Luis chuckled. “Sheridan and I spent all day yesterday together, and it was amazing. I didn’t even want to leave her last night and…” Luis paused as he looked up at Sam, who had a mischievous grin on his face. “And not for the reason that your thinking of Sam,” Luis continued with a laugh. “Well, not only that reason. I have never been so happy just being with someone in my whole life.” “Well then, I’m sure this is going to make you even happier,” Sam said as he handed Luis a manila envelope.
Luis ripped open the envelope and pulled out a picture. It was of himself and Sheridan dancing at the Policeman’s Benefit.
“Wow, doesn’t she look beautiful?” Luis said softly as he ran his finger over the picture.
Sam grinned, shook his head and turned around to go back to his office. Luis stared at the picture for a few more minutes before sitting it up next to his computer. He then attempted to turn his attention to the mound of paperwork that littered his desk. Luis couldn’t keep his mind on the work and after a few minutes of mindlessly shifting through the papers, he smiled and picked up the phone.
Over at the cottage, Sheridan was lounging on her bed flipping through the latest issue of Cosmopolitan.
“That would look good on me,” she said aloud, as she stared at an outfit on one of the pages. “And, Luis would definitely think it is sexy.”
She made a mental note to look for something similar the next time she was in New York. Sheridan turned the page and laughed as she read the title of the article.
“Guaranteed Ways to Please Your Man.” Well, I have a pretty good idea of how to please Luis,” Sheridan said with a smirk.
Sheridan’s images of pleasing Luis were interrupted when she heard a knock at the door. She groaned at the thought of having to entertain any visitors this morning. She knew that she wouldn’t be able to be a very good host when all her thoughts were of Luis. She hesitated for a moment, hoping whoever was at the door would leave. Maybe it’s Luis, she thought, and jumped off the bed and rushed to the door. She pushed the curtains aside to look out the window, but couldn’t see anyone standing at her door.
Sheridan sighed and opened the door. No one was in sight. Just as she was about to shut the door, she glanced down. A vase of wildflowers was on her welcome mat. With a smile, Sheridan bent down to pick them up. She noticed a card in the middle. It read:
Sheridan,
Thanks for an amazing day yesterday. I can’t wait to see you
again.
- Luis
Sheridan lowered her head to the flowers and slowly inhaled. She closed her eyes and smiled. He is the most thoughtful, wonderful man I have ever met, she thought. Sheridan went back inside and put the flowers on the small table in her foyer, and picked up the phone to call Luis. I should thank him for the flowers, and invite him over tonight, she thought as she dialed the number for the police station.
“Harmony Police Department.”
“May I please speak with Officer Lopez-Fitzgerald?” Sheridan asked.
“Sorry, he’s out on patrol. Can I take a message?”
“No, thank you,” Sheridan sighed and hung up the phone.
She paused for a moment, staring at the flowers. Suddenly, a smile lit up her face.
“I suddenly have the urge to go for a jog down town,” Sheridan exclaimed.
Sheridan rushed off to change her clothes. She got ready in less than five minutes and hurried out the door.
Luis had just finished his patrol of the wharf and was about to go back to the station to finish the mound of paperwork on his desk, when he realized what an absolutely gorgeous day it was. Wanting to stay outside a little while longer, he turned and walked toward the park.
Luis had walked around the park for about fifteen minutes, pausing occasionally to greet some of the townspeople. He had just reluctantly decided to return to the station when he heard a familiar voice behind him.
“Excuse me Officer.”
I would recognize that beautiful voice anywhere, Luis thought. A huge grin spread across his face as he turned to greet Sheridan. She had come to a stop right behind him, and when he saw her his heart stopped. She was dressed in a lavender spandex running suit that hugged her curves. Her grin widened when Luis turned to face her.
“Aren’t you supposed to be at the station working?” Sheridan teased.
“Well I was at work, but… I had trouble concentrating,” Luis said, as he took as step closer to her.
“And can I ask what you were thinking about?” Sheridan replied, her blue eyes sparkling as she took a step closer to him.
They were only inches away from each other. His full attention was on Sheridan’s mouth, as her smile was captivating him.
“You,” Luis whispered. He couldn’t resist her anymore, and he knew he had to feel her soft, full lips on his. He pulled her towards him and cupped his hands on either side of her face as he leaned towards her. Sheridan reached up to meet his mouth. The kiss started out soft and innocent, but when Sheridan let out a little sigh against his mouth, Luis deepened the kiss. Sheridan wrapped her arms tightly around his waist.
Time seemed to stand still as they stood together, wrapped up in each other’s arms and sensuous kisses. When Luis eventually pulled away, he grinned at Sheridan, his fingers running through her hair, his body not willing to let go of her.
“I’ve been thinking about you all morning,” Luis murmured, lightly brushing his lips against hers.
“I can’t stop thinking about you either,” Sheridan admitted.
His deep brown eyes were staring so intensely into her eyes that she lost her train of thought. Suddenly, Sheridan blushed, very aware of the stares of the other people in the park. She took a step back from Luis, grabbing hold of his hand.
“I had to come find you to tell you thank you for the gorgeous flowers,” Sheridan said.
“Well, I had wanted to give you flowers the other day, but I saw…I mean, I misunderstood when I saw you and Hank at the Youth Center,” Luis stammered.
“I know,” Sheridan replied. “I saw them on the ground outside after you ran off.”
“I’m sorry,” Luis said sheepishly.
“Don’t be sorry. You are the only man whose arms I want wrapped around me.” Sheridan said coyly, as she stepped towards Luis once again and ran her hands up his arms to his neck.
Her statement caused Luis to smile. Again, their mouths met in an intense kiss. When they broke apart, Sheridan saw the warmth and passion in Luis’ eyes.
“Come over to my place tonight after you’re done working,” Sheridan insisted. “We can order Chinese and watch a movie.”
“That sounds great,” Luis replied. “I’ll be there around 6:00.”
“I guess you should get back to work,” Sheridan sighed.
“Yeah…the sooner I get done, the sooner I can come be with you.” Luis said.
“Mmmm…I can’t wait,” Sheridan said seductively.
Luis leaned down for one last kiss. He was slow to let go of Sheridan.
“I’ll see you later,” Luis said, as he turned to leave.
Sheridan simply nodded good-bye to him, for she couldn’t seem to find her voice. She watched as he walked back towards the police station. In a state of absolute euphoria, Sheridan turned and jogged off in the direction of her cottage.
When Sheridan returned to the cottage, she found her front door partially opened. She hesitantly stopped near the porch, trying to recall whether or not she had shut the front door all the way. Dismissing her concerns as carelessness on her part, she went inside. She flipped the switch to turn on the lamp in the living room, but the light didn’t turn on.
“The bulb must be burnt out,” Sheridan quietly muttered.
She started down the steps, when she heard a loud crunch beneath her feet. Sheridan inhaled sharply as a loud gasp escaped from her mouth. There at her feet was the vase that had previously held her beautiful wildflowers, shattered to pieces. The flowers lay nearby in a trampled heap. She instinctively grabbed for the phone on the nearby table and began dialing the police station. It took her a few seconds to realize that there was no dial tone. Sheridan’s hand started shaking as she dropped the phone to the floor.
She reached for her cell phone on the coffee table and ran out the front door, already dialing the police station number.
“I need to speak with Luis,” Sheridan blurted out before the person on the receiving end of the call could say anything. “Who’s calling?”
“This is Sheridan Crane.”
“One moment.”
Luis grabbed the phone as soon as he knew it was Sheridan.
“Sheridan, are you okay?” Luis asked, his concern apparent.
“Yes, I’m fine. I am a little scared though. I think that someone might have broken into the cottage,” she explained, her voice trembled slightly.
Luis felt as if his heart had jumped to his throat.
“I’ll be right there, Sheridan. Stay outside.” Luis ordered and hung up the phone.
He yelled to his partner, Officer Mike Lewis, to come with him, and the two of them ran outside to the nearest squad car.
How could my day go from absolutely wonderful and perfect to a complete nightmare in such a short amount of time, Sheridan thought. Calm down, she told herself. Everything will be fine as soon as Luis gets here. She tried to slow her breathing, as she paced around in front of her cottage. She was completely oblivious to the figure behind the bushes backing away from her cottage.
Luis sped towards Sheridan’s cottage, his heart pounding inside his chest. His knuckles were turning white due to his death grasp on the steering wheel. He knew she was okay, but when he was on the phone with her, he could by her voice tell she was upset.
“As soon as we get there, I want you to check the cottage and the surrounding area for any evidence of an intruder,” Luis demanded to Mike.
“You got it,” Mike responded, shocked by his normally calm partner’s rigid behavior.
A few short minutes later, Luis skidded to a halt in front of Sheridan’s cottage, and both he and Mike jumped out of the vehicle. While Mike headed toward the front door of Sheridan’s cottage, Luis ran towards Sheridan.
“Oh, Luis. Thank God you’re here!” she cried as soon as she saw him.
She ran to him and threw herself into his open arms. Luis wrapped his arms around her and hugged her tightly against him.
“It’s okay, I’m here.” Luis soothed her. “Tell me what happened.”
Sheridan took a deep breath and lifted her head away from Luis’ chest to look up at him. With her arms still wrapped around Luis, she started to explain.
“I came right home after I left you in the park, and the front door of the cottage was open. I thought I had shut the door when I had left, but when I saw it open…” she paused and shuddered at the thought of some stranger in her home.
“Anyways,” Sheridan continued, “I tried to turn on the lights and they didn’t work. And then, worst of all, the beautiful flowers you sent me were destroyed.”
As she was giving her explanation, a solitary tear made it’s way down her cheek. Luis reached up and wiped it away with his thumb.
“Who do you think did this?” Sheridan asked.
“I’m not sure, but I intend to find out.” Luis answered her as he gently kissed the top of her head.
A few possibilities were floating through Luis’ mind, but he thought it best to keep them to himself for the time being.
“Do you have any ideas?” Sheridan questioned.
Their conversation was interrupted by Mike, who had just finished up his search of the area. He looked a little surprised, as he had witnessed the couples’ embrace. However, he masked his initial reaction and recounted his findings.
“Well, I didn’t find anything unusual, and nothing appears to have been moved or damaged, other than the vase of flowers. Now, I checked the breaker box in the basement and it appears that someone flipped the power off, which is why the light switch and the phone didn’t work. And, I’m guessing the intruder heard Miss Crane returning and panicked, knocking over the vase,” Mike explained.
Luis nodded, although inwardly he was not satisfied with the explanation. It could be possible, but he had a gut feeling that this was something else.
“Thanks for your help Mike. I’m going to stay here with Sheridan, so why don’t you go back to the station and fill out a report.” Luis asked.
“Sure thing,” Mike replied.
Luis grabbed Sheridan’s hand and headed toward the front door of the cottage. Suddenly he turned back to Mike.
“Tell Sam that I’m not coming back into the office this afternoon,” Luis said.
Mike nodded in response, as he got in the patrol car.
As soon as Luis and Sheridan were inside the house, Luis locked the door. Then he went downstairs to the breaker box and turned the power back on. When he came back upstairs he saw Sheridan cleaning the glass and flowers off the floor.
“Let me help you with that,” Luis insisted.
“Oh, that’s okay. I’m almost finished,” Sheridan replied.
“Are you hungry?” Luis asked. “Would you like me to order us some dinner?”
Sheridan stood up and smiled at Luis. “That would be great. I’m starving.”
“Well, I’ll order that Chinese you wanted earlier.” Luis suggested.
Luis called the Sun Garden and ordered some dinner for the two of them, while Sheridan changed out of her running clothes. There’s no need not to look good for Luis, even if we are just sitting around the cottage, Sheridan thought. When she returned to the living room, Luis was sitting on the couch flipping through the channels on the television. She noticed he had partially unbuttoned his uniform shirt and she could see his muscular, bronzed chest underneath. He motioned for Sheridan to join him and she sat down next to him, as he continued flipping through the channels.
“You don’t mind me being here with you, do you?” Luis asked after a few minutes. “I thought you might not want to be alone.”
“Now that you mention it…” Sheridan teased with a smile, as she scooted closer to him.
Luis could tell by her light tone that she was joking. He reached over and brushed his hand against her cheek. His light touch sent a shiver through her body. She closed her eyes and brought her hand up to meet his. The deliveryman chose that moment to knock at the door. Luis got up to get the food, while Sheridan went into the kitchen to get some drinks.
“Have you ever seen ‘Liar Liar’?” Sheridan asked after they were situated on the floor with their dinner.
“No. I’m not really a big Jim Carrey fan.” Luis replied.
“This isn’t your typical Jim Carrey movie,” Sheridan explained as she started the movie. “It’s hilarious. Trust me you’ll love it.”
For the next two hours, the two of them ate their dinner, watched the movie, and just enjoyed each other’s company. Sheridan could tell by Luis’ laughter that he was enjoying the movie.
When the movie was over, Luis helped Sheridan clean up the living room, and he took the leftover food to the kitchen. While he was in the kitchen, Sheridan took the opportunity to dim the lights in the living room, and positioned herself seductively on the couch. When Luis came back into the room, he sat down next to Sheridan and pulled her into his arms.
Sheridan’s back was pressed up against Luis’ chest and she could feel his warm breath on her neck. She draped her arms across his, which were holding her tightly against him.
“Luis, I am so glad that you are here,” Sheridan said with a sigh of contentment.
Luis rubbed his face against her hair, inhaling her feminine scent.
“Are you still shaken up by the break-in?” Luis asked, his voice full of concern.
“A little,” Sheridan admitted. “I am afraid that whoever it was might come back, since I might have interrupted him.”
“I won’t let anything happen to you.” Luis told her.
“I know you won’t, Luis.” Sheridan replied. “Do you think the break-in was a random act?”
“I’m not sure.” Luis paused and took a deep breath. “To tell you the truth, I don’t think this was random. I have this gut feeling that tells me it wasn’t.”
“Then why…” Sheridan started.
“Sweetheart, I don’t want you to be scared, but I think that is what someone was trying to do – scare you.” Luis explained.
Sheridan hadn’t heard a work after he had called her ‘sweetheart.’ She smiled into the darkness, and snuggled closer to him.
“This feels so nice Luis,” Sheridan said in a soft voice.
“It does,” Luis replied. “It feels right.”
“I’m so tired,” Sheridan said with a yawn.
“Me too,” Luis agreed. “It has been a long day, for both of us.”
Sheridan nodded. She was lightly tracing her fingers along Luis’ arm.
“Sheridan, are you going to be okay to stay here? Would you like me to take you somewhere else for tonight?” Luis asked after several minutes of silence.
“Please stay here with me,” Sheridan whispered. “I don’t want to be alone and you make me feel so safe.”
“Of course I’ll stay here. You know Sheridan, I’d do anything to keep you safe,” Luis said as he tightened his arms around her.
Sheridan looked up at Luis and smiled, then she rested her head against his chest. Sheridan closed her eyes. A combination of the dark room and the warmth radiating from Luis, made her fall asleep within a few minutes.
“Sheridan?” Luis whispered, checking to see if she was asleep.
When she didn’t answer, Luis gathered her in his arms and stood up. He walked into her bedroom and laid her on the bed. Luis smiled when Sheridan made a soft sigh. He covered her with a blanket and then leaned down to lightly kiss her forehead. After checking to make sure all the windows were locked, he turned and quietly walked out to the living room. He checked the windows and doors throughout the rest of the cottage and then grabbed a blanket and headed back to Sheridan’s room. Luis settled down in the oversized chair across the room from Sheridan’s bed. He dozed off and on throughout the night, while his concern about Sheridan consumed his dreams and his thoughts.

Chapter 5:
Sheridan bolted up in bed, beads of sweat having formed on her delicate face. Her breathing was heavy as she frantically glanced around her bedroom, expecting to see a masked attacker standing over her. It must have all been a terrible nightmare, she thought. Yet, for some reason she couldn’t seem to calm her racing heartbeat. Then her gaze settled on the chair across from her bed and she felt a rush of relief. There was Luis sound asleep, tangled up in a blanket.
With a sudden urge to feel Luis’ strong arms wrapped around her, Sheridan climbed out of bed and silently crossed her room. Smiling to herself, she thought, what an absolute vision of perfection.
“Luis,” she whispered, lightly touching his arm. She repeated her soft whisper. No response. Sheridan lowered her head and gently pressed her lips against Luis’. Without even opening his eyes, Luis deepened the kiss Sheridan had started. Pulling her onto his lap, Luis wrapped his arms around Sheridan.
“I’ve been dreaming about you all night,” Luis murmured, finally opening his eyes and resting his forehead against Sheridan’s.
“I’m so glad you stayed with me,” Sheridan smiled, deciding not to tell him about her intruder nightmare. “I could stay like this all night,” she added, snuggling closer to him.
“Me too,” Luis agreed, closing his eyes. Within minutes, both of them were asleep, once again consumed with their dreams of each other.
A figure dressed in dark clothing, stood behind a bush outside Sheridan’s bedroom window watching the entire encounter. Silently, he reached for his cell phone.
“This appears to be a little more serious than we had originally anticipated,” the man’s harsh voice rasped into the phone. “I think it’s time we stepped this plan up a notch,” he continued, “whether you are ready to or not.” Shutting off his phone, the man moved stealthily across the yard and headed towards the looming Crane mansion in the distance.
Luis had a horrible knot in his neck, but forgot the annoying little pain when he opened his eyes and realized Sheridan was cradled in his arms. Glancing across the room at the clock on the nightstand, Luis groaned as he realized he had to be at the station in less than an hour.
“Babe,” he said softly rubbing Sheridan’s arm.
“Mmmmmm, Luis…you were….amazing…” Sheridan mumbled with a grin on her face. Luis chuckled as Sheridan opened her eyes, instantly blushing.
“Dreaming?” Luis questioned.
“Sadly,…it was a dream,” Sheridan replied, a slight hint of disappointment in her voice.
“Well, maybe we could make it a reality…” Luis whispered as he bent down to kiss her. Sheridan decided to be bold as she equally matched his kiss in intensity and turned in Luis’ arms, straddling him. Luis started making a line of kisses down Sheridan’s neck, running his mouth along her collarbone.
“You’re getting warmer,” she said with a sigh of pleasure, as Luis slowly slid the straps of Sheridan’s top off her shoulders. Luis brought his mouth back up to Sheridan’s as she pulled herself closer to his muscular frame.
I have got to be the luckiest man in the world, Luis thought. This incredibly perfect woman wants me, Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald, lowly Harmony police officer. Suddenly his responsibilities re-entered his mind, as he realized he wouldn’t be able to continue their passionate encounter, as he so badly wanted to.
“Damn,” Luis moaned as he abruptly pulled back from Sheridan. “I have really got to go. I’ve got to be at work in…,” glancing at the clock again, he continued, “…25 minutes. I really don’t want to go, but….”
“Luis,” Sheridan purred looking at him seductively, “I’ll be right here waiting for you when you are finished with your shift, and we can finish making that dream of mine come true.” She climbed off his lap and straightened her clothing.
“There is nothing I would rather do,” Luis said as he stood up, “then come back here and be with you.” He pulled her towards him, engulfing her in his arms. “Do you mind if I get a quick shower,” he asked.
“It’ll cost you,” Sheridan teased.
“Hmmm, what’s the cost?” Luis inquired, inwardly hoping they had the same thing in mind.
“Only that you stay here again with me tonight…” Sheridan couldn’t believe how bold she was being.
“Now that doesn’t sound like a hefty price to pay. If that’s all you’re charging for a shower, maybe I’ll just come get one here every morning,” Luis offered as he gave her a quick kiss and headed towards the bathroom.
Luis quickly showered and put his uniform back on. Sheridan, dressed in her robe, was stretched out on her plush living room couch, aimlessly flipping through a magazine. Luis paused on his way out the door, giving Sheridan a quick kiss and promising he would call in a few hours.
Luis was trying extremely hard to pay attention to the City Prosecutor, Alicia Kramer, who was prepping him for his morning in court, but thoughts of Sheridan and their time together kept flooding his mind.
“So, I think you’ve been brought up to date on the situation,” Alicia paused, “Any questions?”
“Uh, no…I think I’ve got it,” Luis responded, abruptly brought back to the present by the prosecutor’s irritated look.
“Well then, let’s get in there,” Alicia suggested rather authoritatively. Luis followed her through the door of the courtroom, knowing he had to pay attention to his surroundings for the next few hours, which was going to be difficult.
Around 11:00, Sheridan decided to go outside and enjoy the hot weather Harmony had been having lately. Grabbing her cell phone and a beach towel, she stepped out onto her patio. She lay down and was quickly lost in her daydreams of Luis.
“She must be out,” Luis said to himself, setting down the phone after about 15 rings and no answer at Sheridan’s cottage. He had just gotten back to his desk after 3 hours of courtroom drama and had started sorting through the mound of paperwork on his desk. However, none of his thoughts were of the business in front of him, only of Sheridan. Didn’t she say she was going to be home all day? A wave a panic washed over him as he recalled the break-in that occurred yesterday. Cell phone, Luis thought, and grabbed the phone off of his desk, dialing Sheridan’s number.
“Hello,” answered a sleepy voice.
“Sheridan,” Luis said, partially relieved he had found her. “Where are you?”
Sheridan smiled, realizing he had been worried about her. “I’m in my back yard, sunning myself,” she replied. “And I’d bet anything you wish you could be here right now,” she teased.
“And why is that?” Luis questioned lightly.
“Well, I decided I would take advantage of the privacy of my backyard, and get a more thorough tan,” she hesitated, seeing if he would catch on. His silence meant it hadn’t registered with him. “I thought I’d sunbathe nude,” she finished.
Luis inhaled sharply, as the very thought of that was enough to send him over the edge. “Good God, Sheridan, and I thought I couldn’t concentrate earlier. Now I am never going to be able to think about anything except your toned, tanned, naked….,” he stopped suddenly realizing there other people in the station listening to his conversation. Blushing, Luis put his head down on his desk.
“It’s just too bad I don’t have to patrol over near your cottage, or you would be in some serious trouble,” Luis teased, partially regaining his composure.
Sheridan was really enjoying how this conversation was progressing. “Well, that depends on your idea of trouble, officer. What you seem to be suggesting sounds like something I would definitely be interested in.”
“Okay then, how about I dispatch myself to your neighborhood around 6:00 this evening?” Luis offered with a grin.
“Mmm…I’ll be waiting,” Sheridan said as she put down the phone, hoping the anticipation would be bearable.
“Big date tonight?” Mike inquired, breaking Luis’ thoughts. Which was probably a good idea, Luis thought, considering where those images of Sheridan were headed. Luis nodded his head yes.
“Who with?” Mike pressed. “Let me guess. Sheridan Crane?
Luis’ face completely gave himself away as the sly smile on his face grew.
“Man, I knew it! When I saw the two of you together yesterday at her cottage, I knew something was going on. You seem like you’re looking forward to it,” Mike continued, prying for a little more information.
“You could say that,” Luis answered, although the huge grin on his face definitely indicated he was a little more than excited. Luis had absolutely no idea how he was going to make it another 5 hours before he could go be with Sheridan.
