The surname BEHARIE derives from the name Balharrie which comes from the name of a small village called Balhary. It can be found about 11 miles North West of Dundee, Scotland. The name has changed over time probably due to illiteracy and/or not being able to read the hand writing on documents. Some other surnames derived from Balhary are:-
Bahari, Baharie, Balharie, Balharrie, Balharry Ballharie, Ballharrie, Beharrie.
The name Beharie is extremely rare in the UK but it can be found being used worldwide by illiterate people. This has come about through government or church officials interpreting and then spelling peoples names as they sound. After all, there is very little use in asking an illiterate person "how do you spell your name?". Unfortunatly this causes great problems for people, like myself, researching their family tree as it can cause great confusion. Take for example Beharie and Behari. One is Scottish and the other is from the state of Bihar, in India. These, obviously, have completely different origins. In the phone book of Durban, South Africa there are are several Beharie's listed. These people included a Doctor S. Beharie. I asked him how he spelt his name and he replied "B-E-H-A-R-I", the 'e' had been placed on the end by the publishers of the phone book! There are also many Beharie's, Beharry's living in Jamaca. Currently their names origin is unknown to me, though most have told me that they had Indian ancesters.
