Bo & Hope #57 February 26 - April 29, 2004: 8 hour original edit
DVD #57A 2/26 At the loft, Hope believed the victim had gotten away alive but was convinced Shawn was the killer's target and she realizes he is in grave danger. She points out that the killer thought they had killed him and left him for dead. Hope continues that she felt like someone had walked over her grave, fearing that someone she loves will be the next person to die.
2/27 At the Kiriakis Mansion, Nicole found Bo downstairs and police waiting outside until the safe was opened. When Hope arrived telling Bo about the attack at Shawn's, Bo was quick to tell Nicole that Hope could identify her as the serial killer. Using the evidence they'd gained at Shawn's, Nicole was asked to stand at her bedside over Bo as Marlena had at Shawn`s. Claiming their tactics were illegal, Nicole sent Bo and Hope out of her room.
Meanwhile, Doug went to Celeste for help. Receiving disturbing vibrations, Celeste felt the killer was about to strike again. A window blew open as Celeste announced contact with "the dark side." Asking the spirits if his suspicion about the killer was correct, Doug saw Marlena's face appear within a circle of crystals confirming his suspicions. Celeste shivers as she somberly warns Doug that he is in grave danger.
Julie decided to make a call she believed Doug would never make. "...It's a matter of life and death. Doug thinks he knows who the Salem Stalker is, and we need some advice. So, can I please come and see you, Marlena?"
Reading the Tarot cards, Celeste found Doug had chosen an unusual combination of three cards from the deck. The first was the Wheel of Fortune, signifying the circle of life, and the next was the Judgment card, signifying Doug was answerable for his actions and inactions. When Doug turned over the third card, Celeste gasped at the sight of the Death card. At that moment, the window blew open, and the angel candle's light flickered once more.
3/1 Bo is anxiously awaiting the locksmith to finally open the safe at Victor’s. Hope gets off the phone and tells Bo about Jennifer letting the stranger, Patrick, stay with her. Bo suggests Hope go over to her cousin's and check on her, as well as run a background check on this Patrick guy. Hope calls Jennifer to let her know she's coming over, and that she doesn't like this situation one bit.
3/2 Doug decides to visit Addie’s grave on this darkened night. He looks up to see Marlena watching him in the distance. He tells her she is the person he was looking for as he has some hard questions for her to answer. She observes that she was looking for him too! He tells her that he saw her with Tony the night he was murdered, she was holding a syringe in her hand. He confronts her that the killer had to have patient access and knowledge of medication and how to use it. He says she must have had a breakdown but it has to end tonight!
At Jen's, Hope had just assured Jennifer she would do a background check on Patrick, when they learned he was Bonnie Lockhart's son. More suspicious than ever, Hope asked why Patrick wouldn't be staying with his family. Saying there was a family misunderstanding, Patrick impressed Jen by calling his mother.
At the Lockhart’s, a suspicious Hope stopped in to check on Patrick's story. Hope picked up on Bonnie's matchmaking plans for her son and Jen.
At the Kiriakis Mansion, Nicole nervously watched the locksmith work on the safe. Waiting to arrest Nicole for murder, Bo was confident that she had an accomplice. Nicole's attempts to distract or stop them were unsuccessful, and the safe was opened. But Victor's Will and the file on Nicole were missing. Denying Bo's accusations that she stole them, Nicole sat on a sofa where the missing items were hidden.
3/3 Bo, Brady, and John question Nicole about Victor's missing will and incriminating evidence against her. Brady almost finds the hidden stash of evidence but Nicole is able to distract them all. Bo is convinced Nicole got into the safe somehow but she defends that she doesn't know the safe combination.
Marlena admits to Doug that she is the serial killer and she feigns that she needs help. She sobs as he goes through all the gruesome murders from Abe, Jack, Maggie (she really sobs on that one), Caroline, and Roman. He assures her that they will go to the police together and turn her in. Marlena pulls out her knife and tells him that Celeste’s prediction of his death is about to come true!
Julie and Hope meet up with Alice at her house. Hope puts out a police manhunt bulletin for Doug and contacts Bo at the Kiriakis mansion to fill him in. Celeste calls Hope with the eerie premonition that Doug is in a cemetery, surrounded by swirling fog.
After Hope’s desperate phone call, Bo and John race to help Doug.
At St. Luke's Cemetery, Marlena had Doug in a chokehold when distracted by police sirens. Saying, "Your killing spree is over," Doug overtook Marlena momentarily. But she grabbed him again just before hearing John's voice commanding to, "Hold it, right there."
Roman's ghost appears to help Celeste. Celeste realizes Doug is with the killer and his life is in mortal danger.
3/4 Though not superstitious, Hope went to Celeste's for any information the psychic could offer. As Celeste recounted Doug's knowledge of the killer, Hope became frustrated that she had not asked for a name. Saying she was cursed with the visions, Celeste admitted her fear to know the killer's identity. As Celeste lit the angel candle, a disbelieving Hope was shocked as the tiny light burst into explosive flames. A vision showed Celeste that Doug was near Tom Horton's tombstone, sending Hope to St. Luke's.
As Bo and John arrive, Julie yells out to them not to shoot that it is her. During the distraction, Doug struggled to break away from Marlena. As Doug fell into an open grave, Marlena jumped in after him. Doug's attempt to answer Julie's cries was muted by Marlena's hand. Just feet away, Julie prayed at Tom's grave and then left with Bo and John. Inside the grave, Marlena told Doug, "I couldn't have planned this better. A couple of little stabs here, and you'll be dead and buried."
Crawling out of the grave, Doug desperately sought help outside the locked door of St. Luke's Chapel, where Marlena soon reached him. Marlena struck a brutal blow at Doug. But before she could strike again, Doug punched Marlena and ran. Hiding behind a tombstone, Doug wrote the name, Marlena, on a piece of paper, scrawled in his blood. Bo, John, and Julie return and weakened Doug heard Julie's voice but couldn’t call out without alerting the nearby hiding Marlena.
Hope soon arrives and begs to know if they have found her father yet? Julie worries that with Celeste’s vision that Doug is already gone. Unknowingly, John stood inches away from his wife hiding behind a gravestone. Preparing the bloodstained blade, Marlena thought, "Don't make me do this to you, John."
Bo found blood on the ground, as they searched by flashlight. Losing strength fast, Doug inched his way to a gravestone, placing the paper against it. As Hope prayed to Tom, she screamed when Doug's hand reached out from behind the stone and grabbed her ankle.
Celeste was having a vision of a gravestone with Doug's name on it next to Tom's. Bo called for help and Hope begged her unconscious father not to die. Marlena watched, thinking, "Your Daddy's dying, Hope. Now's my chance." As Marlena ran into the darkness, John's flashlight caught sight of her, as he astonishingly whispered, "Doc?"
3/5 At St. Luke's Cemetery, Marlena still clutched the bloody blade as she watched Bo's desperate attempts to revive Doug. But Doug couldn't speak as Hope asked for the Killer's identity. Watching his strength fade, a hysterical Hope cried, "Daddy, no don't leave. Daddy please come on, fight!" As she begged her father to hang on for the sake of his grandchildren, Doug struggled to respond, "..and for you, my little girl."
When Bo asked who his assailant was, Doug moved his head to one side, perhaps pointing toward the nearby paper with Marlena's name; perhaps to Marlena herself hiding behind a gravestone. Assuring her father the ambulance was near, Hope begged, "Just don't leave me. Please, don't leave me." But before the EMT's arrived, Doug said his last words. "Never. You're my baby, Hope. You always will be."
As Hope screamed, the candle inside St. Luke's went out, and Julie saw the chapel door open revealing the spirit of her husband. As Julie embraced him for the last time, Doug sang "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" to his "Fair Lady." As Doug's spirit faded, Julie found Hope standing in place of her father. In tears, the two embraced.
As Celeste's vision of Doug faded away she decided to get inside the killer’s mind. Retrieving a book, but realizing the danger, Celeste began chanting in a foreign language. As Marlena was about to leave the crypt, Marlena felt the force of someone trying to get inside her mind. Fighting it, Marlena forced Celeste out of her mind sending Celeste collapsing to the floor.
Returning to Doug's side, John discussed the evidence with Bo. Bo asked if there was anything John recognized about the person he saw. Recalling Marlena escaping, John definitively answered, "No. Not at all."
3/8 Shawn arrives and learns that his grandpa Doug is the killer's latest victim. Shawn vows that he is going to stop the killer before she can hurt anyone else.
Bo wants to know whom John pursued in the graveyard. We see John fears it could be Marlena but he decides to keep his suspicions to himself. Julie tells Shawn and Bo that Doug knew the identity of the killer and says he was supposed to go to the police but went to Celeste instead. Bo and Hope want to know if Julie told anyone that Doug knew who the killer was? Julie admits that she told Alice and Marlena.
3/10 Hope and Julie say emotional goodbyes to Doug. Bo and Tek search for clues. Doug's spirit materializes but no one sees him. Doug futilely points to the hidden slip of paper with the killer's name upon it.
3/11 At Alice's, Julie blamed herself for leaving the cemetery before finding Doug. Hope thought the killer had overheard Julie's discussion with Marlena. Asking how to go on, Julie was advised by Alice that Doug would live through her, just as Tom lived on through Alice, in her heart.
3/12 Arriving at the Kiriakis Mansion, Bo was an unwelcome guest for Nicole. Still determined there was evidence to convict Nicole, Bo advised minus the Will, Victor's Estate would be decided in Probate Court. His attorney, Briscoe, was prepared to reveal the contents detailing Victor's plans to divorce Nicole. Threatening Nicole with prison and even execution for Victor's murder, Bo warned she would be forbidden to profit from her crimes.
Brady took Nicole's side until there was proof of her guilt, but Bo was convinced Nicole had an accomplice. When Bo criticized Nicole's family and her past, he also warned her to stay away from Shawn. Later, Bo would tell Brady that Nicole had the eyes of a killer, something he had seen before.
Alice prayed that Tom would help an inconsolable Julie. Touching his photo, Alice sensed Tom sending a message. "Oh, yes, Tom, I hear you Darling, and I'm coming to you now." Leaving alone, Alice went to visit Tom's grave.
3/15 Desperate for a lead, Hope urges John to think back to the night Doug was killed. John remembers seeing the figure fleeing the scene of the crime but he refuses to believe it could've been his beloved. Thinking John might be suppressing the killer's ID in his mind, Hope wants him to talk to Marlena. John refuses and Hope brings in Tek to put John under hypnosis. John's fears are confirmed as he remembers seeing Marlena.
3/16 At the Salem PD, Hope and Tek panicked, as John was unable to come out of the hypnosis. As his subconscious recalled Marlena in the cemetery, John went into convulsions. As Hope feared they were losing him, John saw himself in a small, white room with two doors. Asking where he was John heard a voice saying, "the point of no return. Which door will you choose?" Torn between the two doors, John pulled away challenging the voice. "Who are you?" To which the voice replied, "You can return to your life and confront the fact that your wife is the Killer”.
John angrily reacted, "Doc is not the Salem Slasher! There's no way she could have murdered all those people. There's just no way!" But the voice continued, "Or, if you choose the other door, you can stay silent forever." Against a wall, John cried out that the choice was impossible. "No way I could send the woman I love to prison."
As Hope and Tek watched John's head drop lifelessly, the voice continued, "Which door will you choose? Choose, John." John said, “Marlena is the mother of my child. She can't be the killer." Seeing the light coming from beyond each door, John heard once more, "Choose!" And with that, John came out of the hypnotic state.
Tek believed that John's mind had shut down due to ISA training, but John added that was strictly for classified information during torture. When Hope asked if he'd seen the Killer's face, John recalled Marlena's face, but he said nothing. Tek prepared to view surveillance photos from cameras set at the cemetery in hopes the killer returned to the scene of the crime.
As the file downloaded, John's mind began putting the clues together. From the saleswoman identifying Marlena, to Shawn's frantic accusations about the designer suit button to John seeing Marlena's flight and her muddy prints at home. The camera's results showed three women at the cemetery after Doug's death. Alice, Celeste, and Marlena. John watched Marlena's picture in silence, as Hope asked, "Who is it? Who is the serial killer?"
3/17 At the police station, John wrestles with the incomprehensible notion that all signs point to his wife as the serial killer. Marlena calls John, trying to feel out whether he remains convinced of her innocence. She tells him she loves him and he says the same but Marlena remains wary, terrified that she will have to kill the man she loves.
Tek, aware John seems to be protecting someone, begins to hone in on Marlena. Hope remains skeptical and Brady tells Hope and Tek that Marlena has an alibi she was with Belle when Doug was killed. John reveals to Brady that this is a lie and Brady is flabbergasted. John says he doesn't know who the murderer is but he vows to stop her.
3/18 Hope arrived home finding a tired Bo determined not to rest until the Killer was found. Begging him not to go, Hope argued that Bo might end up dead as well. Leaving a sleeping Bo at the Brady House, Hope left alone in the night. "I won't let the killer destroy the man I love or anyone else in my family. Whoever you are, I am coming after you."
3/19 At Alice's, Julie mourned her husband together with Alice, but recalling happy years as Hope grew up complete with young Hope flash backs.
3/22 Tek and Hope compare why they each think Marlena could or couldn't be the killer. When John arrives at the police station he goes head to head with Tek. Hope tells John if he vouches for Marlena, she'll believe him and stop investigating. John tells Hope he's sure Marlena's innocent and he'd stake his life on it.
Alice hears Tom's spirit whispering to her again, telling her to go back to his grave.
3/23 Visiting Celeste, Hope asked why she went to the cemetery after Doug's death. Explaining that Tom had summoned her with a message, Celeste spoke of her vision, telling Hope another Horton would die. Hope left, worried for her grandmother's safety, while Alice was returning to the cemetery.
At Tom's grave, Alice's question to him was answered as Doug's note toppled over. Stunned at finding Marlena's name in blood, Alice believed it was a sign that Marlena would be the next victim. But she couldn't hear Doug's ghost saying he died for refusing to believe in Marlena's guilt. Doug pleaded, "Look at the note, Alice. Know the truth."
Alice struggled to understand the note's significance, as Doug continued his warnings. "Do not trust, Marlena. She is evil. Alice, please hear me. Your life is in danger. Do whatever you have to do to protect yourself. Once Marlena knows you have that note, you are a dead woman."
John paid an unusual visit to Celeste looking for answers. Warning him to "Beware and Prepare", she cautioned, "The killer could be one step ahead of us." As John asked Celeste if there was any chance his wife was the killer, Marlena was at the Penthouse. Accessing the surveillance files on John's computer, she deleted evidence of her most recent visit to Tom's grave. Searching for other visitors, Marlena asked, 'who will be my next victim?' as she saw the note held by Alice Horton.
Meanwhile, Alice sat at home realizing the incredibly shocking truth. "Is it possible? Marlena is the killer." But as she tried to call for someone, Alice had an attack, dropping the note and the phone.
3/24 Hope is at the station thinking about one of her family members being in danger. Hope calls Shawn, remembering he had his own theory about the killer. Shawn comes down to the station and, reluctant to break his promise to Belle, Shawn finally gives in and tells his mom he believes it to be Marlena. Hope considers this news and informs Shawn that Tek thought the same thing. Hope lays out the evidence and it appears that Hope finally believes Marlena could be the killer. Tek realizes that someone has broken into the Salem PD mainframe and he believes it's the killer.
Alice recovers from her momentary dizziness with the help of Tom's ghost. She studies the clue she found at the graveyard and Doug's ghost urges her to call Hope. Alice finally makes the call to Hope but her message ends up buried on a PD desk. Alice is about to turn in when Doug urges Tom to keep her there. Tom's picture grabs Alice's attention and she hears "She's here." Just then, the clue with Marlena's name on it glows and we see Marlena has arrived outside Alice's house.
John has gone to see Celeste to ask her to use her powers to confirm or deny if his wife is the serial killer. Celeste points out that she will have to talk to the dark side. Skeptical John agrees and Celeste summons the sprits and a wind blows through.
3/25 At the Salem PD, Hope left Shawn behind answering a page to come to Jen's Without getting Alice's message, Hope instructed Shawn not to disturb his great-grandmother. As they compared notes, Shawn admitted to Tek that Belle wasn't with Marlena the night of Doug's murder. But he was furious learning that Tek had confronted Marlena.
Hope arrived at Jennifer’s and mentions her fear the murders weren't over. Realizing that Patrick could be of help to Jen, Hope suggested changing his mind about leaving.
At Celeste's, candles turned into fiery torches, as she chanted to summon "dark forces." In search of answers about Marlena, Celeste was overtaken by an evil spirit. Addressing John, the spirit said that while not capable of evil, Marlena had once been capable of hosting it. As John recalled Marlena's possession, and her exorcism, the spirit spoke of an evil that remained in Marlena waiting to return stronger and more deadly.
When John demanded to know if Marlena was the Killer, the evil replied, "You have the answers, Priest. You already know!" And with that the evil spirit left Celeste's body. Telling a recovering Celeste that Marlena had similarly addressed him as "Priest" when possessed, Celeste warned to "prepare for the fight of your life."
After John left, Celeste recalled her own confrontation with a once-possessed Marlena. As the "Horton" name appeared in red on a mirror, she realized it was too late. "It's already begun."
At Alice's, Tom's voice warned, "She's here", as Doug's bloodstained "Marlena" note was shown to her. Once inside, Marlena whispered her regrets about killing Alice. "Salem isn't going to be the same without you. But, you know what they say like sands through the hourglass. Eventually, our time runs out."
Consulting the Tarot cards for the next victim's name, Celeste was surprised finding previous victims, Abe, Jack Maggie, Roman. As she drew the last card with Alice's picture, Marlena had already entered Mrs. Horton's bedroom. Tom's ghost watched, as Marlena stopped short for a moment, and then frantically stabbed the blanketed form on the bed. Realizing she had been outfoxed, Marlena headed downstairs to a dark room, surprised when a light went on. Calmly, Alice Horton greeted her. "Hello, Marlena. I've been expecting you."
3/26 Celeste's Tarot cards foretold the next victim as Alice's picture changed to the Death card. Attempting to leave to warn Alice, Celeste was stopped as the lights flickered. One by one, Caroline, Maggie and Roman appeared. Desperately, Celeste cried, "we have to stop the killer before she kills our beloved Alice!" But the ghosts were unable to stop the dark forces at work. Exasperated they couldn't help, Celeste started to call John when an evil voice cried out, "No!" A lightning bolt through the window struck Celeste to the floor. Unable to revive her, Caroline's ghost said Celeste would be unable to remember anything.
At the Horton House, Alice greeted Marlena acknowledging her as the killer. Admitting she was the Salem Stalker, Marlena said, "now that you know my little secret, you must die." Speaking as a loving grandmother, rather than one in fear for her life, Alice told Marlena to think of her family. Laughing at Alice's advice, Marlena was confident that no one was on to her, but referred to one piece of incriminating evidence. Producing the bloodstained note, Alice asked, "You mean this?"
Marlena demands that Alice give it to her, but Alice says no. Impatient with what she called Alice's negotiations, Marlena demanded, "Alice, give me the paper." Alice stood firm as she told Marlena she doesn't have to do this anymore. Marlena screamed, "Oh, shut up! Come on, Alice. Give me the paper, Old Woman!" Pulling the paper further away from Marlena and clutching it, Alice's anger emerged on her face and in her words. "My Tom will not let you have it! He will not let you take it from me!"
Marlena poised the letter opener to attack Alice as she had Roman, when she heard Tom Horton call her name. As a stunned Marlena saw Tom's ghost and called his name, Alice questioned what was going on. As Marlena tried to strike again, Alice warned her to stay away. But when Marlena said, "Not if your life depended on it," three other ghosts appeared.
Maggie: "Get away from her you bitch!"
Roman: "You heard Maggie. Isn't it time you took responsibility for your actions?"
Maggie: "And to think, you were my friend."
Caroline: "Friend? I treated you as a daughter, and you poisoned me."
Roman: "You heard them, Doc. You've reached the end of the line. And to think I ever loved you."
Marlena pleaded, "Caroline, no, no." Looking lovingly at Roman as he accused her, Marlena said, "Roman, you don't understand."
Tom's voice screamed, "Get out, Marlena! Get out of this house!" And as Marlena ran in terror, Tom's ghost chased her to the door. Alice immediately phoned John. "It's about your wife. John, Marlena is the serial killer, and she's about to kill me."
3/30 At the Horton household, Alice was cornered in a pantry. Courageously, she told Marlena, "Surely, you must know that you will never get away with this." Laughing, Marlena replied, "That's what they all said every single person you are about to join in Eternity." Seated before a plate of her own doughnuts, Alice grew nervous as Marlena stroked her arms, refusing Marlena's sarcastically ominous offer. "How 'bout some nice cold milk to go with those doughnuts? I'm not completely heartless. I do think that the condemned has a right to enjoy their last meal or snack as the case may be. And your homemade deep fried donuts are perfect."
Alice continued when Marlena said she had no choice. "Marlena, dear, you don't want to do this. You have a choice, you still have brain don't you? Think of all the happy times we shared right here in this house. You've been like a part of the family, another daughter to me and my dear Tommy. He thought so much of you." Agreeing Marlena called herself, "practically perfect in every way. Good friend, loving wife, great mother and so much more." Alice reasoned with her. "No, you're just very sick, that's all. But we still love you."
Pensively changing moods, Marlena asked, "How can you? How can you love me after the awful things that I've done?" Alice replied, "Because we know that this isn't you. You know it, and we know it, too. So, just stop. Stop all the madness. Let us help you now before it's too late." But leaving Alice's, Marlena stood outside the door thinking, "My dear sweet Alice. What an amazing person. Cup of tea, some words of wisdom and a promise of hope even in the darkest of times." Licking some sugar from her thumb she added, "And the most delicious doughnuts. They really are to die for."
John called the Brady house sending Bo to Alice’s after he sees Marlena drive by. Hope had just mentioned Celeste's premonition when Bo had to tell her, "John thinks it's your Grandma, Mrs. 'H'."
In her car Marlena plotted her next attacks. Planning to deal with Shawn, then John, then "all the people who know I've been a very bad girl." Tasting one of Alice's doughnuts she'd brought with her she cried, "Oh, my gosh, these are fabulous! I should have gotten the recipe."
3/31 Bo and Hope arrive at the Horton house and find Alice sitting on a chair at her kitchen table, peaceful, her eyes closed and surrounded by donuts. A shocked Hope buried her heard in Bo's shoulder from what she saw. Hope is beside herself; Bo finds a weak pulse. Alice opens her eyes briefly but is unable to name the killer. Hope sobs for her Gram. Lexie arrives and Hope begs her to help Alice. Hope screams how could Marlena do this!
Dvd #57B Hope asks Shawn to come over to his grandmother’s now. He comes in and asks if she is going to make it? Heartbreakingly it is too late, Lexi reports that Alice has passed away. Bo and Hope mourn the passing of the original Horton matriarch. Alice is at peace as she joyfully reunites with the great love of her life, Tom.
Shawn defends Marlena; still believing the alibi Belle gave her. Bo and Hope are painfully aware Belle is lying about her alibi for Marlena. Hope fears that when Shawn finds out that Belle's lie made it possible for Alice to be killed, it will end their relationship forever.
John confronts Marlena, now convinced she is the serial killer. Clever Marlena tries to cover but John has heard the truth from Alice Horton. When Bo calls John, he stalls for more time with Marlena. John searches Marlena’s purse and finds evidence in her gloves that she killed Alice. Marlena finally confesses.
In tears, she falls into John's arms sobbing begging for his help. She then grabs his gun and smirks that Alice won’t be the only one to die tonight. She refuses to let him arrest her and plans to send him off the terrace balcony. There is a struggle and it is Marlena who falls off the penthouse terrace. Sami, on the street below, sees John fighting with Marlena. Sami screams as Marlena's body hurtles toward her.
4/1 John told Bo and Hope about Marlena's confession. Hope was stunned as he explained the powdered sugar in Marlena's glove. “She is the monster" was Bo's reaction, as John suggested Marlena suffered a breakdown. But Bo angrily said, "She's not getting away with this on some kind of insanity plea." Recalling Caroline, Roman and Victor's deaths, Bo said, ”She killed them all, and she's going to pay! I'm sending her to death row where she belongs." Appealing to Bo as a father John asked for time to tell his daughter. Hope found it inconceivable that Marlena could be the killer. As she wondered how the news would affect Belle, Bo was confident that his son would never forgive the girl who gave an alibi for a murderer.
A vengeful Bo surprised Hope saying, "If I was Marlena's doctor, I'd put her out of her misery."
4/2 Alice was already being memorialized at University Hospital by photo flanked by flowers. Stopping by, Hope told Bo that if Marlena was guilty, the nightmare still wasn't over. Marlena's condition was stable and expected to recover because of landing on the awning. Bo was eager to read Marlena her rights and get her behind bars as soon as she regained consciousness. Bo had found John's gun with Marlena's fingerprints on it. Although this corroborated John's story, Sami said she would defend her mother.
Hope shocked the family when she told Jenn, Mickey, and Julie about Alice’s murder. Now, in tears herself, Hope blamed herself for not calling Alice. Julie blamed herself for going to Marlena before Doug's death. Naming Marlena as the Killer, the screams and disbelief were too much. A few moments later, Jen went into premature labor and was rushed to University Hospital.
4/5 Bo, Hope, Sami, and John stand around Marlena's bed. Sami asks her to tell them she is innocent and Marlena does just that. As John takes Marlena's hand, her heart monitor goes crazy and Marlena falls unconscious. Belle and Shawn enter as the doctor stabilizes Marlena. John and the doctor tell Shawn and Belle to come back in the morning.
In the hallway, John and Bo argue over Marlena's innocence. John thinks "I'm innocent" means that she is legally innocent because she wasn't in her right mind. Sami jumps in to plead her mother's case once again but Bo says he doesn't really want to listen to "Salem's biggest liar." Sami vows, "I will do anything to protect my mother."
Father Tim Jensen shows up to do a check-up on Marlena's soul. Marlena tosses in her sleep, dreaming of being attacked by a tiger. Soon after, the group enters her hospital room and Father Jensen makes a cross on Marlena's forehead with holy water. When there is no reaction, Sami snips at John. Father Jensen warns that there is more than one way to check on the status of a soul. However, once Bo, Hope, and Father Jensen leave the room, Marlena wipes the holy water off her forehead in front of a confused Sami and John.
While checking in on Jen, Hope tells Lexie that Marlena said she was innocent. Because of the conflicting stories, Hope says she is going to take grams' advice to not pass judgment and wait for the facts.
Marlena wakes up again. She flashes back to Father Jensen and the holy water and says, "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." A weepy Marlena gasps, "I should have known." "I told him I was innocent and then he pushed me." A satisfied Sami grins at her mother who fixes her gaze on a horrified and hurt John.
4/6 While Sami continued fighting in her mother's defense, others at University Hospital began to have doubts. As she regained consciousness, Marlena insisted she had never confessed to being the serial killer. With few witnesses to corroborate Marlena's claim that John had pushed her off the balcony, Bo refused to arrest John as there is a lack of evidence. Still unaware of Mrs. Horton's message for her, Hope questioned why Alice called John when in danger speculating John made the story up.
Outside Marlena's room, John told her that Alice had called him identifying Marlena. Sami's accusation that only John could kill Alice was confirmed by Marlena who left her bed to say, "It's John. John is the serial killer." With those words, Marlena collapsed. Hope warned Bo, "Either you arrest him, or I will."
Shawn told Hope about Belle's lie giving Marlena a false alibi. Bo calls that another strike against Marlena.
4/7 John is at Marlena's bedside when Lexie arrives with Celeste has a way to reach Marlena and learn the truth. She believes if she makes physical contact with Marlena, she might get some insight into what she's done and her motive for doing it. Celeste takes Marlena's hand and reacts with a powerful vibe. She gasps, Marlena is innocent! John is suddenly struck, of course Marlena's innocent! John knows who the killer is and he's going to get them now!
At home, Bo and Hope are still at odds over whether to believe John's statement that Marlena is the killer or Marlena's statement that she is innocent and John tried to kill her. Bo hears from Tek that Alice's phone records corroborate that she did call John. Hope is devastated when she hears Alice's voice message to call her right away, that it is urgent.
Shawn arrives, and their attention goes to their son. Shawn is reeling that Belle lied to him. He tells his parents he wants to spend the night in his old room. Hope shocks him by saying he can't stay there. She tells Shawn that she knows he still loves Belle. He has to try to make things right with her. Love is the only thing that really matters and Shawn leaves. Bo and Hope put aside their differences and come together, reaffirming their love in the face of all this horror, grief and sadness.
4/8 Hope wondered why she, Bo and Shawn were spared when so many family members died. Still not convinced about Marlena's guilt, Hope disagreed with Bo about Shawn and Belle's relationship. She tells him that Shawn and Belle are meant to be together, they are soul mates just as her and Bo are (this triggers a cute childhood flashback). They wind up in bed again kissing until a call comes in from John advised them to join everybody at the hospital. John was "bringing in the killer."
4/9 At the Brady’s, Bo and Hope were curious at John's claim to have the killer. Intent on sending the killer to the death chamber, Bo's concern was that John wasn't doing things by the book. Hope called to give Shawn with John's news.
John brought a woman with a scarf over her head into University Hospital. "I was right. Marlena didn't murder our loved ones. This monster did." Pulling off the scarf left everyone disbelief over what they saw.
4/12 John reveals his new suspect and it is none other than Hattie Adams. Bo wonders if it is a clone and Sami thinks it is her Aunt Samantha. John informs the group who she is and Bo points out that Marlena was the one that confessed. Desperate to free Marlena, John explains that Marlena must have just told him what he wanted to hear. When Sami starts to act up, John blames Marlena's head injury and Sami's screaming as the reason for Marlena accusing John of pushing her off the balcony. John believes based on the look-a-like history in Salem, that this is the work of Stefano DiMera.
Trusting this hunch, John brings back Bart, Stefano's "Guy Friday" henchman. Bart happily fills in the plot holes for the group, that Stefano met Hattie at the Hudson Street Diner and paid for Hattie's physical transformation into a Marlena double. Alas, Bart admits that he had no idea what the big plan for Hattie was. Bart merely followed Stefano's last order to finish the transformation. He adds that he was not aware of Hattie's involvement in the murders and did not come forward. Now that John got him to talk he wants to leave town to save his life.
Shocked by the implication that Stefano could still be alive, Lexie confronts him. Still fearful of all angry DiMeras, Bart explains that Stefano is the Phoenix and he will always operate under the assumption that he could come back even though he has not heard from Stefano since he "died." Now up to date on whom Hattie is no one lets Bart say another word. After mourning the deaths of Roman and Abe, two of her best tippers at the diner, Hattie gorges herself on Alice's donuts and nearly chokes to death.
Without being able to talk to Marlena, Bo starts to read Hattie her Miranda rights. Realizing that this is not a reality show but an actual arrest, Hattie proclaims her innocence shouting that Marlena is the killer and that she can prove it.
4/13 At University Hospital, Bart assisted in defending Hattie's innocence. During Abe and Jack's murders, Hattie was in Europe for cosmetic surgery. Suffering an infection from that surgery, Hattie was then hospitalized from Halloween through Thanksgiving once again. A shoplifting charge put Hattie in jail from before Christmas until Valentine's Day. Confirming this, Bo was forced to release Hattie instructing her not to leave town. Hattie left with a tray of what she thought were Alice's last batch of donuts, now worth "a bundle" on EBay.
In preparation for her arrest, Bo handcuffed a sleeping Marlena to her hospital bed. When she awoke, John couldn't answer when Marlena asked, "why did you do this to me?" As he held her hand, Marlena helplessly watched Bo and Hope together outside.
4/14 It is a dark day as Salem prepares to bury its beloved matriarch, Alice Horton and Doug Williams. Alone with John, Marlena begs him to intercede with the cops and take her to the funeral. Earlier at home, Bo and Hope check on their son and are stunned to hear he's thinking about leaving town. Shawn explains he needs to get away to clear his head. He still loves Belle, but it's hard to see a future with her now that they know Marlena was the killer and Belle lied to give her an alibi. Hope doesn't want Shawn to leave and is upset when Bo tells Shawn he thinks he should go and gives Shawn the keys to his motorcycle. Shawn says he's thinking about joining the merchant marines like his dad.
At the church, Hope asks Shawn if he is going to talk to Belle. He ignores her and sits with his parents. Bo and Hope each make a loving tribute to Alice, including flashbacks with each of them. Ghost Alice portends doom for the residents of Salem and tells Celeste that one more will die. Jennifer movingly remembers Alice and Doug with memories and tributes. When John wheels Marlena into the church as the services are over, the mourners react in shock and horror.
4/15 At St. Luke's, Bo asks Hope what is she doing here? Screaming, "Murderess!" Julie accused, "She killed my husband! She killed my grandmother! How dare you come into this House of God!” Mickey and Bo restrained Julie as she attacked and started strangling Marlena. John assured that Marlena posed no threat, to which Julie continued, "She won't be satisfied until every last Horton is dead! She's a killer. She doesn't belong in the House of the Lord!" Addressing Marlena she cursed her saying, "May God strike you dead!"
As Julie sobbed hysterically, Bo was furious with John. Saying she asked John to bring her, Marlena said, "I didn't kill Doug or Alice. I loved them." Hope still gave Marlena benefit of the doubt, against Bo's argument not to delude herself. As John promised to prove her innocence, a grateful Marlena said her family meant everything to her. Bitterly, Julie replied, "Then you'll excuse us while we bury ours. Your last two victims are lying in their coffins. Unless you want to join them, I suggest you keep your distance, Marlena."
Hope at Doug's gravesite, says a simple "I love you, Daddy", as she placed a rose on his casket. As family members consoled one another, Hope reminded Shawn Douglas that her father was proud of his namesake. Leaving the gravesite, Bo fired Officer Pirelli for allowing Marlena to leave the hospital.
While John took responsibility Marlena insisted on her desire to pay her respects. Bo coldly asked, "Do you get some kind of perverse pleasure out of seeing your victims buried on the very spot you killed Doug?" Marlena declared her innocence based on her whereabouts during the first murder. But Bo confirmed that discussions with Eric as well as airline records proved she had left earlier. As they left, Marlena questioned Bo's remarks while John reminded her that Eric nor airline records wouldn't lie. Leaving Marlena to wonder, "Oh, well maybe it's true. Maybe I did it. Maybe I'm the killer."
4/16 At St. Luke’s, Julie summoned Bo when she found Celeste unconscious on the floor. As she came to, Celeste said, "It was Alice." Bo said premonitions wouldn't convict a killer and left. But Celeste told Hope, Julie and Mickey that the killings would not stop. Alice's news, "Before the suffering is over, one more death will come to Salem" was met by a promise from Julie to kill Marlena herself.
Outside the chapel stopped by Bo, Nicole and Marlena listened as he asked which one of them had the motive to kill Victor. As Julie interrupted, asking Bo to jail Marlena, Nicole rushed away. While Hope warned about Alice's news, Bo called Lexie, learning that John never had authorization to take Marlena from the Hospital. Advising Lexie that Marlena was returning, Bo asked that she be treated as a prisoner under 24-hour guard.
4/19 Bo tells Hope as Police Commissioner that he will avenge her family’s deaths. Hope continues to tell him that it doesn’t make any sense for Marlena to be the serial killer. They are at odds over Shawn's decision to leave town. Bo says that Mrs. H was killed because Belle gave Marlena an alibi and he doesn’t blame Shawn if he never talks to Belle again. Bo thinks it means he is growing up and to let him go. Hope thinks Shawn is running away.
At "Alice's," Bo gets a call that John has removed Marlena from her hospital room so Bo, Hope, Shawn, and Belle race to the hospital chapel. Marlena and John meet with Father Jansen in the chapel for the exorcism. Bo thinks it is a set-up but Hope remains open minded. Their son doesn't weigh in on the matter but silently comforts Belle. A tearful Marlena says she is ready. Father Jansen puts a cross up to her forehead and Marlena violently flinches away from it.
4/20 At the hospital chapel, Father Tim began the first words of exorcism, "Behold the Cross of the Lord", as Marlena jumped at the site of the crucifix. When a cold breeze blew, Bo, Hope, Belle, Shawn and John remained present despite the father’s warning. Marlena grew tremulous rattling her handcuffs as the priest continued the Latin invocations. With a wind now blowing in the chapel, Marlena's eyes opened, now green, as the evil within her greeted the priest.
Growls changed to benevolence briefly at Belle's voice but the evil within Marlena caused her to grab Belle by the throat. As Bo and Hope aimed their pistols at Marlena, the evil threatened to take Belle with it. Father Tim loudly cried out his prayers, as John tried to reach Marlena saying she wouldn't want to hurt her daughter. The prayers ended as he touched the crucifix to Marlena's forehead.
As she went limp, he said, "The evil is gone." To which John replied, "and so is she." But Marlena had only passed out as the evil light left her eyes. Father Tim explained that he had used an invocation inviting an evil force to use Marlena as a host, claiming the new evil would challenge one already present. But according to him, Marlena was not possessed and now the newly invited evil was exorcised from her.
Confirming that Marlena was not possessed, Bo said she was now responsible for nine murders. As Marlena denied it, John tried to intervene on his wife's behalf. As Hope begged Bo to show some mercy he replied, "Did she show any mercy when she butchered your father, or my mother or brother or Mrs. H.? No. Why should any of us show her mercy?" John begs Bo not to do this, but Bo retorts that he has no choice.
Emotionally accentuating some victims' names, Bo arrested Marlena while she wept helplessly. "Marlena Evans Black, you're under arrest for the murder of Alice Horton, Doug Williams, Anthony Dimmer, ROMAN Brady, Cassie DiMera, CAROLINE Brady, Maggie Horton, Jack Deveraux and Abe Carver. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be held against you in a court of law!"
At the Salem PD, John and Marlena said their goodbyes, as Bo said, "It's time. In fact, it's long past due."
4/21 With no resistance and tearful silence, Marlena was booked, fingerprinted and had her "mug shot" taken by Acting Commander In Chief Bo Brady with Evans listed as her last name on the sign held in front of her. With just a moment alone with John before being transported to the county lockup facility, she cried and begged him to help her, declaring she has no memory of any of the killings. Then goes on to question her own innocence and admits she should pay the ultimate price if she is guilty. John kissed and hugged her, professing his undying love and swore that he "will move heaven and earth" to help her.
Bo delivered Marlena to county lockup, where she was made to change into the standard orange prison jumpsuit. Assured she would be watched by extra security and also that she was on suicide watch.
Bo received a call from the county lock-up alerting him to the fight in the holding cell. Bo relayed to Hope and John that there had been not just a fight, but also a stabbing and a death. As the show ended, on the jail cell floor, were all the female prisoners but it was not possible to tell what had happened.
4/22 When Bo, Hope and John arrive at the Holding Cell, Marlena appeared beaten up and frightened. She denied accusations that she killed fellow prisoner, Tina. Hope noted that the knife, fashioned from a spoon, could not have been made in the time Marlena was there. Bo questioned the inmates, but not recognizing their answers as lies. The guards claimed Marlena resisted them after threatening prisoners. But Marlena's recollections were of waking up on the floor with bloody hands as a hand swept something from the floor. Using the sharpened spoon, she tried to fend off intimidating prisoners until the guards brutally cuffed her. John suggested, Marlena be tested for any neurological disorder that might affect her behavior. Against Bo's judgment Marlena was sent to be tested by Lexie.
At University Hospital, Shawn was unable to get through to Belle who was now too distraught over her mother. Hope began to believe in Marlena's guilt, and Bo personally guarded Marlena as Lexie ran tests. Bo assured John that his refusal to testify was not needed since he considered the prison inmates "star witnesses" to a murder. Outside Marlena's room, John watched and whispered, "You're no killer, Doc. I know that in my heart, and now I gotta prove it. I don't know just how I'm going to do that but I will.
4/23 At University Hospital, Marlena waited for test results. Bo's grudge strengthened for Marlena and for John who was protecting her. But despite her own grief and conflict, Hope tried to encourage Shawn and John, while suggesting that John come to terms that Marlena could be the Killer. Lexie announced that test results showed no medical reason to explain Marlena's violent behavior.
Psychiatric examination showed that Marlena's knowledge of right from wrong might have traumatized her to suppress memories of her deeds. But Lexie told a distressed John, "But she definitely knew exactly what she was doing." As Bo arranged for Marlena's transport to isolation in prison, John refused to let her go. Head to head in the hospital hall, Bo threatened to arrest John. Before walking away, a desperate John cried, "What do you guys expect from me? This is my wife."
Mimi's suggestion to use sodium pentothal, a truth serum, on Marlena was agreed upon even by Bo. While John argued that a truth serum could railroad Marlena into the gas chamber, Marlena agreed. "I'll take the serum. I have no idea if I have brutally murdered nine of our closest friends. But I really want to know the truth. I want to know what I've done."
4/26 Bo and Hope go over the case and discuss the ramifications of using the truth serum. Hope insists that Marlena seemed more desperate to know the truth than a criminal normally would and in addition is showing extreme remorse. Conflicted, Hope talks to Marlena alone. Hope says that if after all this she can forgive Marlena that would really tick off Stefano. A weepy Marlena appreciates her support but believes that with no sign of a chip in her body and the fact that Stefano is most definitely dead, only the truth can heal. Though Hope tells her not to take the serum, Marlena says she has to.
4/27 Lexie speculated with Hope. Lexie believed the truth serum might be the only way to learn if there is connection to Stefano.
Avoiding any loopholes, Bo arranged for Judge Fitzpatrick and a court stenographer to be present for Marlena's questioning. Marlena signed the consent form telling John, "If it's good bye, please remember, I love you." As John still begged her to change her mind, Marlena addressed those in her room. "Whatever I say I want you to know that if I did those unspeakable things, I'm deeply sorry. As Shawn and Belle came in, Marlena added, "Whatever I say is going to impact all of our lives. I just pray that it is what you need to hear. And with that, Lexie prepared the sodium pentothal injection.
4/28 At the hospital, Marlena was about to submit to the truth serum as John begged her not to do it. Judge Fitzpatrick and Bo reminded John that Marlena had no choice since she waived her rights. Shawn, Bo, Hope, Belle, Lexie, and John watched as the time for the questioning began.
Marlena remembered the attack on Bo and Hope at the fashion show. She then told of how she had returned from Colorado early, and when she arrived at home and opened her bag and she saw the killer's mask. She explained that it was then she knew Abe must die.
Judge Fitzpatrick told Bo she knew how hard this must be for him but they must follow proper procedure. Bo agreed, saying he intended to lock up the killer today. Bo stared hard at Nicole as she entered and said that maybe he'd be lucky and could lock up the woman who murdered his father as well. Bo angrily confronted Nicole and told her that soon enough they would know if Marlena killed Victor. He ordered a police officer to let the other officers know that widow Kiriakis was not to leave the building.
4/29 As the questioning began, Marlena described finding the mask, as she unpacked. "I knew I had to kill Abe." Hope had to restrain a hysterical Lexie, "That was my husband, That was Abe!" Watching Abe leave for Theo's Christening, Marlena recounted, "I knew Abe would never suspect me. It was perfect." Surprised to see her, Abe mentioned his vest and gun. "Yeah, I got my gun, too," Marlena replied. "I knew this would take you by surprise." Abe watched in sickened astonishment as she pointed the gun, "Then I shot him. I killed Abe Carver." Bo was riveted as he listened, but Lexie, John and Belle wept as Marlena continued as if she was gossiping. "Abe was my first, my first victim."
Marlena relayed a message from Abe before she pulled the trigger. "Tell Theo and Lexie how much I love them." Detailing her careful aim because of his bullet-proof vest, Marlena watched a bleeding Abe struggle to ask, "Why, Marlena, why?" "And then I left him to die." Bo announced he would get confessions first and seek motives later, while a stunned Belle observed it could only get worse from here.
Jen listened as Marlena spoke of Jack cutting through the alley making it easy to sneak up on him. Marlena had watched as Jack stopped to set his watch. "Little did Jack know that time was running out for him." He never even knew what hit him. I just felt that freedom. I'd killed twice and nobody ever would suspect it was me." As Marlena knelt over him, taunting him as Jack tried to speak. "You're trying to say something? Ah, spit it out. From the looks of things you don't have too long to live."
Jennifer asked, "What did he say, tell me." "He said, 'Jennifer's waiting for me. I can't be late.' So, I said to him 'your little Jennifer is just going to have a long wait.'" Chuckling, Marlena continued, "She's going to have to wait until Hell freezes over." After Jen tried to attack her, Marlena appeared annoyed when Jennifer was removed screaming, "You killed my husband."
