Bo & Hope #72 December 20, 2007 - April 7, 2008: 8 hour original edit
DVD #72A 2/18 At the crash site, Shawn was able to revive Hope and Kayla, but Bo was barely alive and was unconscious. Kayla grieves over her father’s death. Shawn learned that his grandfather, Shawn Sr., gave up his oxygen supply and ultimately sacrificed his life in order to save his children.
Hope told Shawn that Bo was very ill and needed more tests to determine the extent of his medical condition. Bo's condition worsened and he stopped breathing. Hope, Shawn, and Marlena administered CRP and resuscitated him with a defibrillator that Marlena found in the plane.
2/19 Inside the fuselage of John's wrecked plane, Marlena was able to revive Bo using an automatic defibrillator from the plane. Hope and Shawn were very relieved to see Bo breathe again. A confused Bo asked about his Pop, and Hope had to tell him again that Shawn Sr. had given his life so the others could have the oxygen on the plane. Bo made his way up the aisle to where his father's body still sat, and removed the blanket that covered him. Sobbing, a devastated Bo buried his face in his late Pop's chest.
At the police station, Lexie was distraught that she and Abe might never see their friends again. Roman, hanging up the phone, told Lexie and Abe that the FAA didn't think they'd have much luck finding the plane until morning. Frustrated that he couldn't just go find his family himself, he angrily flung an item from his desk across the room. Lexie quietly left the office, and Abe tried to comfort his old partner by reminding him the Bradys and John were survivors. Roman admitted he was worried about John's presence with them.
At the PD, Caroline said she hoped the Saint Christopher medal she'd given Shawn Sr. was protecting him. Max and Roman assured her he was probably protecting everyone else, and looking forward to telling them all about Colleen over a bowl of chowder and a pint. Roman announced to the stunned group that NORAD had called off the search until morning. Victor asked Abe if everything possible was being done, or if they could get more planes and searchers. Abe advised him they were doing all they could.
Marlena checked on Bo, and told Hope to get some sleep. Hope whispered to her sleeping husband that she was going to hold him to the promise they'd made to grow old together.
At Caroline's suggestion, the Bradys' family and friends gathered at the church to pray together. Victor remarked to Kate that though he found comfort in the church, he wasn't as devout as his mother had been. Kate worried what they would do if they lost Philip, and Victor took her hand in comfort. Several family members lit candles, and Caroline led the group in the Lord's Prayer.
Afterward, everyone seemed lost in their own thoughts. Some lit candles, some prayed wordlessly, and some looked to the stained-glass image of Christ as if for guidance. Caroline silently prayed as she fingered her rosary beads, and Roman tried to comfort her.
Bo awoke with a start, and described a frightening dream he'd been having about his Pop disappearing while they were on a fishing trip. Hope agreed they would all miss him very much, and told Bo she was glad he'd finally admitted he was sick. He apologized for not telling her sooner, and she said not to ever do anything like that to try to protect her again. They promised to always be there for each other. As Bo drifted off to sleep, Hope tucked the blanket tighter around him and Claire.
2/20 In the plane wreckage, a shivering Hope curled up next to an unconscious Bo and begged him to fight for his life and his family. Marlena stopped by to check on Bo right as Hope was starting to lose her composure. Seeing that Hope was reaching a breaking point, Marlena tried to comfort her by assuring her that Bo's lowered body temperature meant that the illness attacking his system would slow down as his circulation decreased. Marlena also assured Hope that help was on the way. Belle and Shawn joined the group, and Hope admitted to Shawn that Bo was not doing well. Marlena urged Hope to rest, but Hope refused to sleep or leave Bo.
Back in Salem, at police headquarters, Roman worked to find any new information on the crash. A restless Victor and Caroline walked in to talk to Roman about the search, and Roman begged Victor to wait and let search and rescue do their job first. Roman informed them that the plane dropped quickly before it crashed, but he also told them that the plane did not veer off course toward the nearby airstrip in Greenland.
John and Shawn rooted around the wreckage looking for flares when suddenly they heard the sounds of a helicopter flying off to the west. They scrambled to find the flares and luckily, found them in time to shoot one off into the air while the helicopter was still hovering nearby. Back at the clearing the group happily hopped up and down, waving at the helicopter flying overhead. Nearby, a tearful but smiling Hope held onto Bo, who still lay in the wreckage unconscious.
While Roman continued to scrounge up details on the crash site, Victor and Caroline stepped outside to talk. They talked about how strong Bo was and joked about how Bo was likely going to save everyone single-handedly. As the two began to discuss Shawn Sr., Victor let Caroline know how pleased he was with how Shawn Sr. raised Bo. "He raised him well. I'm gonna tell him that as soon as he gets back," Victor laughed.
Abe pulled everyone into his office to give them the update. Roman informed the group that the crash site was found and that someone at the site set off a flare. Kate informed Chelsea that the crash site had been found and that someone shot off a flare there. Ecstatic, Chelsea hung up the phone and told Max, Stephanie, and Nick that the plane had been found and that, "They're alive!"
2/21 At the hospital, everyone anxiously awaited the arrival of their loved ones. Shawn, Belle and Claire were the first to arrive. Everybody was relieved to see them. Two bodies arrived covered by white sheets. Fear appeared on the faces of everyone. They were relieved to learn it was the pilots. Caroline was relieved to see that nobody was seriously injured. Marlena told Caroline that she was so sorry. Caroline did not understand what she meant. Each time somebody tried to tell Caroline about (Grandpa) Shawn, other people arrived to interrupt.
Then Bo arrived on a stretcher. Caroline thought this was why people were trying to comfort her. She was very concerned about her son. Bo, Kayla and Steve were all taken to be examined. Caroline was anxious to see her husband. As she was beginning to realize what all of the apologies were about, another body covered with a white sheet arrived. Caroline was in a state of shock. She could not believe it was her husband. Shawn told her grandmother that his grandfather died a hero. He explained how (Grandpa) Shawn refused to take oxygen.
Everybody was visibly shaken by the death and proud of Grandpa Shawn's heroics. Caroline wanted to see her husband. Roman tried to discourage his mother from looking under the sheet, but she insisted. The sheet was removed and Caroline said goodbye to her husband. John, at Marlena's urging, told Caroline that he wished Shawn had been his father. These words meant a great deal to Caroline. Maggie comforted Caroline and took her friend back to the pub.
Hope comforted Bo. Chelsea arrived by Bo's bedside. She was concerned about her father. Bo told her that the doctors did not know what was going on. Bo and Hope made light of the situation, but Chelsea did not believe they were sincere. Just then Victor arrived to see his biological son. Victor expressed sympathy at the death of Shawn. Bo told Victor that Shawn was a great father. Victor agreed. Victor offered the best possible medical care for Bo, if the doctors in Salem were unable to diagnose and cure his condition.
2/25 Roman visited Bo in the hospital and questioned him about the plane crash. Shawn, Belle, Claire, and Caroline arrived at Bo's room to try to cheer him up. Bo was feeling upset and guilty about being the cause of Shawn Sr.'s death. Caroline asked Bo to tell her about Shawn's last moments. Bo was very emotional as he told his mother what happened. Bo explained that there was not enough oxygen for everyone to survive. Shawn Sr. knew Bo was ill and refused to take the oxygen.
Bo later passed out from his injuries and symptoms of his illness. When Bo regained consciousness he learned that Shawn Sr. gave his life to save his family. Bo felt he might die anyway and that maybe Shawn ended up giving his life for nothing. Lexie walked into the room and told Bo that no one was going to die on her watch. She ordered more tests to find out exactly what was wrong with him.
Caroline told Bo never to apologize again about his father's death. Caroline was proud that her husband died a hero for his family. She told Bo to follow the doctor's orders and get well. After everyone left Bo's hospital room, Lexie promised Bo that she would tell him the truth as soon as she knew the test results.
Caroline later returned to check on Bo. They reminisced about all the wonderful times they shared with Shawn and the family. Caroline told Bo that even when Shawn learned that Victor was Bo's biological father, Shawn remained loyal and hardworking and never changed his feelings toward Bo. Caroline said that Shawn was angry about her affair with Victor, but he remained a faithful husband and devoted father. Shawn always told Caroline that his job was to remain true to those ideals forever. Caroline comforted Bo and reminded him that Shawn lived and died by those words and that he would be with them forever.
2/27 It's the day of Grandpa Shawn's funeral. Bo, who's still undiagnosed, is being released from the hospital to attend his father's funeral. He's weak and in a lot of pain.
At the Brady pub, Kimberly arrives and greets her mother, sister, and Steve.
Everyone is at the church waiting for the service to begin. Before the service begins, the four original Brady children gather around their father's coffin and pray. Caroline sits next to her two sons. During the funeral, each of Shawn's children gives a eulogy to their father. Flashbacks for scenes of Shawn Sr. with Bo, Kayla, and Caroline. So amazing that all of the original actors are playing these characters. Chloe sings an Irish funeral song as the congregation passes by the coffin to pay their respects. The funeral ends with Caroline resting her cheek on top of her beloved husband's coffin as she tells him a final goodbye.
2/28 Grandpa Shawn's wake is takes place at the pub. The Bradys continually mention that the wake is supposed to be fun, but nobody is enjoying themselves. Shawn's children, grandchildren, and Abe take turns giving tear-jerking speeches. Kimberly is reluctant to leave early, but everybody encourages her to get back to her life and her husband. Hope is concerned about a visibly ill Bo. She wants to take him to the hospital, but he refuses. After a while, Bo can longer carry on the act and must be taken to the hospital.
Outside the pub, Steve helps take Bo to the car. Bo asks Hope to stay at the pub for his mother. Hope reluctantly agrees. Hope thanks Steve for his helps and gives him a hug. Ava, who is lurking about, takes a picture of Hope hugging Steve.
Back inside the pub, Hope tells Lexie that Bo has gone to the hospital, and Lexie leaves to check on him. Kimberly says goodbye to her family. She has a plane to catch. Hope decides to check on Bo. While Hope is standing outside the pub, Ava approaches her. Ava wants to know if Hope loves Steve. Hope tells Ava that she does love Steve. Hope asks who Ava is, but Ava simply walks away. Max gives another speech for his father. Then, everybody drinks and takes turns telling Irish jokes, Belle, Roman, EJ, Victor, and Caroline. The wake seems to have turned into what Shawn would have wanted. They all toast his portrait. Everybody seemed to be enjoying themselves.
At the hospital, Bo urges Steve to leave to take care of Kayla. Steve eventually agrees. After Steve leaves Bo's room, he asks a nurse to take good care of Bo. She says that she is going to connect Bo to the monitors. When the nurse enters Bo's room, he is unresponsive-he has no pulse and is not breathing. The nurse calls for Lexie. Lexie begins CPR and sends the nurse to retrieve the crash cart. When the nurse arrives, Bo begins breathing. Hope, Shawn D, and Chelsea arrive and are concerned about Bo. Lexie tells them she has the test results. Bo's pancreas is slowing shutting down. If his pancreas continues to shut down, Bo will die.
2/29 Bo awakened in his hospital room to find Hope sitting at his bedside. After she told him she'd slept in the chair next to him the night before, he asked about his test results. Later, he worried that he might die, and bemoaned how his father had refused oxygen on the plane so the others could live. Hope wouldn't hear it. "You are going to get well, end of story," she said, and told him not to argue with her about it.
In the hallway outside, Victor demanded that Lexie tell him what is going on with Bo! She assured him that it isn’t cancer but they still didn't know why Bo's pancreas was failing. Victor angrily accused Lexie and the hospital of incompetence, and said he'd bring in every expert in the world if he had to. Caroline arrived and overheard Victor declaring that he would not lose Bo! Caroline chimes in that neither will she! Lexie didn't mince words telling her about Bo's condition, that his pancreas is failing. Lexie admits that there is nothing they can do at the moment but the are working on it. Victor promised Caroline he wouldn't let their son die. "I know you mean well, Victor," she sighed, "but you're not God, and it would seem that Bo's life is in His hands right now."
Victor and Caroline joined Bo and Hope in Bo's room, and when he alluded to not being around much longer, Caroline stopped him. "Beauregard Aurelius Brady, I never want to hear you talk that way again. Do you understand me?" she said firmly, shaking a finger at him. "Yes, Ma," Bo replied with a weak smile. Lexie advised them all that, since Isabella had had pancreatic cancer, it might mean the family had a genetic predisposition to disorders of the pancreas. She said if they knew what was causing Bo's problems, it would help them treat it better. If they couldn't, his pancreas would continue to lose function until it eventually shut down.
"So, I got a chance of beating this, right?" Bo asked. Lexie was fairly confident they could identify and treat the problem, but welcomed Victor's offer to bring in other doctors. Chelsea and Shawn joined them, and Chelsea told her dad they were all going to help him get well. She leaned down and hugged Bo and told him she loved him. "I love you too, kid," he replied.
3/4 Ava has arrived in town, she is Steve’s stalker ex girlfriend. She stares at pictures of Steve and Hope, and believes that Hope (who she comes to believe is Kayla) is Steve’s wife. Ava demands her guard give her all the names of all the women on the plane from Ireland. When she reads the list, she finds the name Kayla Johnson and surmises that is Steve’s wife. She believes Hope is Kayla, after seeing her hug him.
Shawn brought a sailing magazine to the hospital for Bo, over whom Hope was fussing, trying to get him to eat or drink something. When Bo complained about the green gelatin, Hope promised to take him out for a steak dinner when he got out of the hospital. Bo confided wistfully that he'd rather be on the Fancy Face. The three of them reminisced about Shawn's childhood growing up on the boat, and about what a great time they'd had sailing around the world.
Victor arrived just then and promised they'd have a lot more happy times ahead. He explained he'd found a specialist who was a diagnostician, internist, and surgeon-and an expert on the pancreas-who just happened to be in Salem giving a seminar. At Victor's request the doctor was extending his stay to help with Bo's case. Lexie and Chelsea soon joined them, and Victor filled them in about the specialist. Hope told Victor how grateful she was for the additional help, and Lexie, while seemingly hesitant at first, said Bo's welfare was her top priority.
Victor's specialist friend, Dr. Daniel Jonas entered Bo’s room. Victor introduced him to everyone and explained that, in addition to being the son of an old friend, Dr. Jonas was also his godson. When Victor boasted about what a brilliant diagnostician he was, Dr. Jonas modestly said he wasn't a miracle worker, but added to Hope, "I will do my damnedest to make sure your husband is around for a long, long time." After Lexie brought him up to speed, Dr. Jonas asked to speak with Bo alone.
In the hallway, Lexie sternly told Victor that, as chief of staff and Bo's friend, she would need to check out Dr. Jonas's credentials. Victor did not object. She added that while the doctor seemed unconventional, if he was as good as promised, she'd welcome working with him. Hope thanked Victor again, and said she hoped the quirky doctor's supposed brilliance was enough to save Bo's life.
Alone in Bo's room, Hope and Bo looked through the sailing magazine and talked about going to some of the beautiful places in it once Bo was well. He told her a little about what he and the doctor had discussed, and said that now, with Dr. Jonas and Lexie both working on his case, he felt like things were looking up.
3/6 Bo is wheeled back to the ICU and Lexie's there. Bo tells her how much he appreciates her-he feels like he's getting the best care. Lexie tells him she checked out Dr. Daniel Jonas and he really is the best. Hope is with Chelsea. The two women bond over their deep love for Bo. Neither of them can stand the thought of losing him. Hope thinks this Dr. Jonas is a bit unconventional, but if he can save Bo's life, that's all she cares about. Chelsea thinks the new doctor is great.
3/10 Hope was sitting by Bo's beside when he woke up and told her that she had to prepare herself for the worst. Hope told Bo to fight and that she didn't want to hear any talk about him dying. Bo and Hope talked about the past and reminisced about their days sailing around the world with Shawn Douglas on the Fancy Face. They counted their blessing and were thankful that they had memories of a life rich with enduring love.
Bo was grimacing with pain that seemed to worsen as they talked. Bo told Hope that he was frightened for himself and the family. He told her that he would fight as hard as he could to stay alive, but that he might not have the time or the strength to make it before the doctors could find a way to save him.
Kayla discovered that the newest, but rarely documented, treatment available was a living donor transplant. Dr. Daniel Jonas, Bo's specialist, was the only doctor to have performed the surgery. There were only a few documented cases, but Kayla and Lexie felt it might be Bo's only chance to survive. Just then, Bo flatlined and had to be shocked back, but was still on the brink of death. Kayla told Hope about the radical procedure and said that she should proceed as it might be Bo's only chance. Hope asked Kayla and Lexie to get more information about the surgery.
While they waited for Dr. Jonas, Lexie asked Hope to gather all the family members together as it might be their last chance to say goodbye to Bo. Family members were on their way to the hospital to rally around Bo and Hope.
3/11 In Bo's room, Hope excitedly told her husband that Lexie and Kayla might have found a way to help him. Bo didn't seem optimistic, because he said if there were any kind of treatment, they would already be doing it.
At the nurses' station, Kayla asked Daniel why he hadn't mentioned the experimental, living-donor procedure before. He informed them that not only was it unlikely to be successful, but it was just as dangerous for the donor as the recipient. Kayla was arguing that it might be the only thing that could save Bo's life just as Victor walked up and overheard. He asked Daniel about it, and Shawn, Chelsea, and Philip started peppering the doctor with questions as well.
Daniel told them that he was not going to let the desperation of Bo's family drive him to do a procedure that might not work and might even make the situation worse. He asked Kayla and Lexie if they could continue their discussion in private, so Victor left to get some air, and Chelsea and Shawn went into Bo's room.
Daniel, Kayla, and Lexie discuss the partial pancreas transplant from a living donor, and the most likely candidates to donate were blood relatives. He also warned them that there are considerable risks as the operation could kill both Bo and the donor. Lexie said they should do the transplant regardless of the risks, but Daniel said since he wasn't on her staff, she couldn't force him to do it. Lexie and Kayla were shocked that he would just let Bo die.
Daniel said of course he wouldn't, but he wanted them to be aware of the drawbacks, stressing the importance of everyone knowing the donor would be at great risk as well. Kayla assured him that anyone in the family would lay their life on the line for Bo. Daniel reminded them that there were many matching criteria that had to be met. Kayla countered that the sooner they got started testing everyone, the sooner they could do the transplant. Daniel finally agreed to do the transplant, as long as Bo and Hope agreed after he'd discussed the dangers with them.
Belle brought Ciara to see Bo, who was happy and surprised to see his daughter. He told his "little princess" how much he loved and missed her, but when it became obvious he was in too much pain, Belle offered to take the toddler back to her great-great-Grandma Alice's. Philip then wanted a moment alone with Bo, so Bo asked Shawn and Chelsea to take Hope to get something to eat.
After they had gone, Philip told his half-brother to fight like hell to get better. When Bo expressed surprise that Philip suddenly wanted to be brothers, Philip said that he was finally beginning to realize that family was more important than anything, even money or power. Bo was skeptical, and Philip seemed to know it was because of his affair with Belle. He told Bo he had been wrong to try to take Belle away from Shawn, but he had backed off because he loved her, and respected Shawn-and Bo. Bo seemed to relax a little, and they enjoyed a little brotherly banter before Philip said goodbye and left.
Marlena arrived just as Hope was leaving Bo's room, and asked if there had been any change. Hope told her he was getting weaker by the minute, and tearfully added, "I think I'm losing him." Marlena took her friend in her arms and tried to comfort her.
Shawn, Belle, Philip, Chelsea, Max, Stephanie, Caroline, and Victor gathered in the hallway outside Bo's room as they waited for a decision from the doctors. Lexie and Daniel returned from the lab, and Daniel informed everyone that going through with the transplant was their best option. Daniel asked Shawn to get Hope so that he could explain everything to her, because he didn't want to raise Bo's hopes unnecessarily if she rejected the idea.
Once Shawn had returned with his mom, Daniel told Hope that the procedure they wanted to try involved a partial pancreas transplant from a living donor. He explained that a person could go on to live a normal life with part of their pancreas, and the part he implanted into Bo could either take over for or jump-start Bo's pancreas-assuming the procedure was successful. He warned that if the operation was not a success, or if Bo's body rejected the pancreas, Bo would die, and the donor could die too if he or she suffered serious health problems as a result of the transplant.
When Hope asked about his previous patients who'd had the operation, Daniel said they were irrelevant, as every case was unique. Lexie assured them that there was a very good chance they would find a match, since Bo had so many relatives in Salem. Daniel cautioned everyone that because there were so many criteria to meet, even someone who matched might not be able to actually donate-but the group all said they wanted to be tested. Hope asked for Lexie's advice, and Lexie warned that anything else they could do to figure out what was wrong with Bo and treat it might take longer than he had-but she said it was Hope and Bo's decision. Hope told her to start the testing, then went inside to tell Bo.
When Bo heard the procedure involved a living donor, he refused. Hope read him the riot act, and Caroline reminded him that his father had sacrificed himself so Bo could live. Bo promised the two women he wouldn't give up. Kayla, Lexie, and Daniel toiled away in the lab, peering through their microscopes in search of a donor match.
Meanwhile, Bo's family and friends gathered in the chapel to pray and wait for news. Shawn lit a candle, Max held Caroline's hand, and Victor sat with his arm around Chelsea. Others sat quietly, lost in their own thoughts, yet all were desperately hoping for the same thing. Bo and Hope lay in his hospital bed, his arms around her and her head on his chest, wordlessly waiting for the news that could save his life.
3/12 Kayla tiptoed into Bo's hospital room, where Hope was sleeping in the chair next to Bo's bed. While Kayla was checking Bo's monitors and I.V. bags, Hope awakened and asked if they had found a donor yet. Bo then woke up, and as he kissed Hope good morning, Chelsea dropped by on her way to class to check on her dad. Bo assured her he was in good hands, so after hugging him and promising to come back later, she left. Bo admitted he was glad he'd gotten to spend time with Chelsea and the rest of his family the day before, because he needed to say goodbye to them. Hope told him it sounded like he was giving up, which she said was not an option.
Kayla gently admonished Bo, too, and declared that they would find a donor. Bo said he knew things didn't look good, and he didn't want anyone putting their life at risk to donate part of their pancreas to him. Kayla and Hope assured him everyone just wanted to help him. Bo admitted he didn't want to leave because he didn't want to let anyone down. "You have never let any of us down," Hope said sternly, her voice breaking, "and I know you're not about to start now."
Bo confessed to Hope that he didn't know what he'd do if their roles were reversed. Hope stroked his beard tenderly, and replied that he'd tell her the same thing she was telling him: that everything was going to be all right. Hope climbed into bed with Bo, and as they snuggled he said he knew he didn't have much time left, and asked her to always remember how much he loved her.
Choking back tears, she told him he was going to get better because he had to teach Ciara how to drive. "And do background checks on all her boyfriends," Bo added. Hope said she never would have thought of that, and asked what she would ever do without him. He said he hoped she never had to find out. Later, as he slept, she kissed him softly and whispered, "You can't leave me. I won't let you."
3/13 Bo was going downhill fast. He knew he was critical and started making preparations. First, he talked to Steve and asked him to be there for Hope and his family. Steve tried to put a positive spin on things but in the end he agreed. Next, Bo talked to Shawn and prepped him for the possibility he might soon be the man of the family.
He wanted confirmation that Shawn would take care of Hope. Shawn agreed, but told Bo he and Belle and Claire were planning to sail the world, just like they did when he was young. His dad had to recover, and not ruin their big plans. Hope figured out what Bo was doing and freaked. She told her husband to stop it, because he wasn't going anywhere.
Daniel and Lexie were busy in the lab trying to find a donor match for Bo. Lexie was thrilled when a match was found but Daniel warned her that the surgery was still experimental and very dangerous. Lexie didn't care as it was their only hope. They needed to inform the family and the donor immediately.
3/14 Hope and Steve waited at Bo's bedside while Bo slept. Hope fretted because Bo was getting weaker, but Steve tried to encourage her to be more positive. When she worried that they hadn't heard any news about the transplant, he calmly assured her that Kayla had told him the doctors had to check and recheck everything during the testing, because the procedure was still so experimental. He promised that he'd be there for her if she needed him, and that he wasn't going to let her or Bo give up. Hope said she wasn't giving up, but admitted she was very scared.
In the lab, Lexie and Daniel reviewed their checklist for everything that had been done to prepare for the transplant surgery. After Daniel made certain they were completely ready, Lexie announced that all they had left to do was get the donor's consent. Kayla brought Shawn into the lab, and the doctors explained it was hospital policy not to release the names of donors until they had been officially notified, in case they had a change of heart.
Kayla continued that they'd called the cell number they had on file but they hadn't been able to reach Bo's donor yet. She said they didn't want to upset the family by announcing they'd found a match, then telling them they couldn't locate the donor. Shawn then understood why they'd wanted to speak to him alone, and agreed to keep the family calm until the donor could be located.
Victor found Caroline sitting alone in the park. She couldn't hold back her tears as she confided that the realization that Bo could die had just hit her. Victor tried to reassure her that they wouldn't lose their son, because Dr. Jonas would do his best to save Bo, and that the odds of finding a donor match for Bo were good. Victor added that while his own heart condition ruled him out as a donor, Philip was being tested and would be a very willing donor. Caroline continued to fret that they might not find a match, or that Bo might reject the transplant, but Victor urged her not to speculate too much. He suggested they go to the hospital together, and she agreed.
An obviously drunk Chelsea sat by herself at the Cheatin' Heart, and ordered another screwdriver from the bartender. Kate rushed in and told Chelsea she'd been looking all over for her, and chided her for not answering her cell phone. Chelsea replied that she didn't want to be found, nor did she feel like talking. She added that she'd been calling the hospital every half-hour, but they still hadn't found a donor for her dad. Kate acknowledged how upset Chelsea must be, but cautioned her that getting drunk wouldn't help.
Chelsea said she was drinking to numb the pain, since she was convinced her father was going to die. "Because I am Chelsea Benson Brady, otherwise known as the kiss of death," she slurred, raising her glass to her grandmother. Kate told her she was being ridiculous, but Chelsea maintained that she was a jinx. She recounted everyone she'd been close to who had died: her adoptive parents, Zack, Ford Decker, Grandpa Shawn-and, before long, her dad. Kate gently said she was going to take Chelsea home with her to sober her up. Chelsea told her grandma to be careful, because loving her too much might be unhealthy.
Chelsea then tried to order another drink, but Kate told the bartender to bring coffee instead, even though Chelsea protested. The bartender agreed with Kate that Chelsea didn't need any more alcohol. When he brought the coffee over, Chelsea angrily insisted she didn't want it, and knocked the cup to the floor. After telling Kate off, Chelsea stormed out. Kate went after her, but the bartender stopped her at the door and informed her Chelsea hadn't paid her tab.
Kayla went into Bo's room, and the gathered family followed her. She informed Hope and Bo they had found a compatible donor, and the surgical teams were ready to go. She repeated what she had told the others, including why she couldn't divulge the donor's name. Caroline assumed that it must be someone in the family, and Kayla acknowledged that it was. Hope asserted that it shouldn't be a problem to tell them first, if the donor was a family member. Finally, after Bo pleaded with her, Kayla reluctantly gave in. "All right. It's Chelsea," she said.
Chelsea stumbled into the park and dropped onto a bench. She remembered how happy she'd been the day Bo had asked her to come live with him and Hope, and how he had told her she was as much a part of his family as Shawn and Zack were. As she lay back on the bench, she turned on her cell phone and looked at the screen. She remarked that she had a lot of voice mails, and then wondered aloud, "What if they found a donor for Dad?" As she closed her eyes, she dropped her phone to the ground, where it immediately began vibrating.
Bo declared he wouldn't let Chelsea donate part of her pancreas to him. He said he didn't want his daughter to risk her life for him, even though the others tried to warn him he would die if he didn't allow the transplant. Lexie and Daniel entered, and Daniel informed them that it wasn't Bo's decision, since Chelsea was of age and had known all the implications when she agreed to be tested. Bo countered that his decision was to refuse to go through with the surgery. Caroline argued that Shawn Sr. hadn't given his life so Bo could just give up, and admonished him that he had to have the transplant. Daniel said that Bo and Chelsea were as close a match as he'd ever seen, but Bo would not be swayed. Finally Kayla asked everyone to step outside.
In the hallway, Lexie told the group how critical it was that they find Chelsea and begin the transplant as soon as possible. Victor said he'd have his men look for her, and Steve went off to search the rest of hospital. Shawn and Belle left to check Chelsea's hangouts. Shawn called Chelsea's cell but got no answer. In the park, her phone vibrated unheeded in the snow next to her.
Steve and Victor returned and reported that they hadn't found Chelsea. Hope came out of Bo's room and asked why Bo wasn't being prepped for surgery. Caroline told her they couldn't find Chelsea. Hope was stunned with disbelief. She then said someone should be with Bo and went back to his room. Kayla urged the others to try to be patient for a bit longer.
Bo remembered consoling a weeping Chelsea, and promising as he hugged her that he would do everything in his power to always be there for her. He resolved aloud that he was not going to let his daughter put her life on the line for him. When Hope returned, he asked her why Chelsea hadn't been in to see him yet. Hope reluctantly told him no one could find her. Bo responded, "Maybe that's God's way of saying she shouldn't go through with this."
Kate finally spotted Chelsea on the park bench, and ran over and tried to wake her. When Chelsea's phone vibrated again, Kate answered it, and a confused Shawn asked why she was answering Chelsea's phone. She informed him that Chelsea had had too much to drink and was passed out, then told him exactly where to find them in the park. Kate hung up and continued shaking Chelsea and calling her name, to no avail.
Shawn called Daniel and filled him in about what was going on with Chelsea. Daniel said he'd be right there, then hung up and told Lexie to keep the operating rooms on standby. He warned her that Chelsea had been drinking, and about what tests they might have to run before they could do her surgery. "What the hell was she thinking?" he said as he rushed out.
Steve and Kayla came in after he'd left, and Lexie brought them up to speed. Kayla explained to Steve that they couldn't operate if Chelsea had alcohol in her system. Lexie advised them the surgical team was prepared to do a "rush detox," but they still might not be able to get the alcohol out of her system in time.
Shawn rushed up to Kate and Chelsea and immediately started trying to rouse Chelsea, swearing and shaking her roughly. Kate asked what his problem was, since Chelsea had been drinking because she was upset about her dad. Shawn snapped that Chelsea's drunkenness was unacceptable, and Kate told him he was overreacting.
As Shawn picked Chelsea up and started carrying her off, Belle reminded him Kate didn't know what was going on. Shawn turned and crossly told Kate, "Chelsea's a match. She's a donor, and she may be the only person who can save my dad's life. We've got to get her to the hospital and sober her up now." Daniel ran up and took Chelsea from Shawn, and told him to call the hospital. "Let them know I'm on my way with the donor, who may or may not be able to save Bo's life," he added as he carried Chelsea out.
3/17 At the hospital, Dr. Jonas was discouraged to learn that Chelsea's blood alcohol level was too high to prep her for transplant surgery. Dr. Jonas was pressured to find a way to flush out the alcohol in Chelsea's body as quickly as possible without using drugs that could interfere with anesthesia.
Dr. Jonas decided on an unorthodox approach and began yelling at Chelsea and told her that if Bo died it would be her fault for being irresponsible. He badgered her until she became so angry that she broke down and started yelling back at him. Shawn and Kate were shocked at Dr. Jonas' behavior and unprofessional manner. Shawn called him on his methods and Dr. Jonas explained that he had to make Chelsea very angry to accelerate her heart rate in order for her body to flush out the alcohol at a faster rate. Shawn told Dr. Jonas about Chelsea's troubled past and her emotional state. Dr. Jonas felt terrible and immediately apologized to Chelsea and told her that if he knew about her past that he would have handled the matter differently and been more sensitive.
Shawn explained to Kate that Dr. Jonas did not intend to upset Chelsea, but the only way he could think of to speed up the detoxification process was by using the human body's adrenaline to cause a natural chemical reaction. Shawn asked Kate to stay with Chelsea. Kate comforted Chelsea and told her not to blame herself and that the family would understand. Kate told Chelsea that it was important for her to stay positive and believe that the transplant surgery would save Bo's life.
Bo told Hope, Caroline and other family members that he would not consent to surgery at the cost of risking Chelsea's life. Bo asked to speak to Chelsea so that he could explain this to her. At that point, everyone was unaware that Chelsea was drunk and Dr. Jonas was trying to get her sobered up in time to prep her for surgery. Hope and Caroline pleaded with Bo to reconsider his decision and agree to the surgery or else he would die. Caroline told Bo that she could not stand to lose her son. Hope told Bo that it was God's will that Chelsea was a donor match.
Bo became so agitated that Lexie decided to sedate him. Lexie and Kayla explained the transplant procedure to Hope and said that it was the only way to save Bo's life. Lexie told Hope that Bo was technically unconscious and as his wife, she could sign the consent forms. At first Hope was hesitant to go against Bo's wishes, but when she understood that surgery was Bo's only chance, she signed the forms. Later Hope whispered to Bo, who was still unconscious, that she knew he would be upset that she disregarded his wishes, but that she had no choice. Hope urged Bo to hang on and fight for his life.
Bo awakened and told Caroline and Victor that he would protect Chelsea and would not change his mind, and then slipped into a deep unconscious state. Victor told Caroline that he could be strong and would be there for her.
Outside Bo's hospital room, Belle told Hope not to be angry at Chelsea because she got drunk, and explained that Chelsea was frightened and depressed at the thought of losing her dad. Hope said that it didn't matter and that she would never forgive Chelsea if Bo didn't survive because of her. Hope was very upset and went off to talk to Chelsea.
When Hope arrived at Chelsea's room, she overheard Chelsea talking to Kate. Chelsea told Kate that Bo meant everything to her and that she would trade her life for his if she could. She was very remorseful about the mistakes in her past, specifically Zach's death. Hope was so moved by Chelsea's unselfishness that she left and decided not to say anything to Chelsea.
Dvd #72B 3/18 At Salem Hospital, Roman helped clear the waiting area outside Bo's room, and he convinced the family and friends to head down to the OR waiting room.
Though Daniel pushed Hope to say her goodbyes to Bo, Hope steadfastly refused. Hope instead asked Daniel to help her keep her promise to Bo to keep him around. With time slipping away, Daniel asked Hope to leave the room so he could talk to Kayla and Lexie alone. Once Hope exited, a frustrated Daniel admitted he had no ideas for how to help Bo hang on any longer. The three doctors then agreed to go to the lab and retest everything and review the pancreatic study that Kayla had found earlier.
With Bo now alone, Chelsea entered his room and crawled into bed beside him, quietly weeping. "I'm so sorry I let you down," Chelsea whispered. Chelsea apologized for her behavior over the previous few years and told Bo that he and Billie were the most amazing parents in the world. Still crying, Chelsea begged Bo to hold on long enough for her to be ready for the surgery.
In the hallway outside Bo's window, Hope and Daniel spotted Chelsea lying next to Bo. Hope was relieved to find Chelsea, and told Daniel that Chelsea would do anything for her dad. Hope and Daniel entered the room, and Chelsea quickly apologized for leaving her room and she explained that she had to see Bo. Daniel gently lectured Chelsea for leaving her I.V. behind since she needed fluids.
Lexie took Chelsea back to her room to do another blood alcohol test, while Daniel injected Bo's I.V. with medication. Bo immediately seemed to improve, and he even woke up just long enough for Hope to beam at him and kiss him. Daniel seemed fairly confident that Bo could hang on long enough to make it to surgery. Down the hall, an elated Lexie rushed into Bo's room to tell Daniel that Chelsea's blood was clear and that she was being prepped for surgery.
3/19 At Salem University Hospital, the Bradys gathered while the surgical teams prepared to transplant a section of Chelsea's pancreas into Bo.
In Bo's room, Kayla added an immunosuppressant to an unconscious Bo's I.V. and told Hope it was so his body wouldn't reject the transplant. Lexie advised Hope she would be assisting Dr. Taylor with Chelsea's surgery, while Kayla would assist Dr. Jonas with Bo's. Hope told them she knew Bo and Chelsea were in good hands.
Kayla and Lexie told Hope someone would be in soon to take Bo to surgery, then left to finish their preparations. Hope leaned in close and told Bo he had to get better because she wasn't finished loving him yet. She reminded him to fight because his family needed him, told him she loved him, and kissed him tenderly on the cheek.
In the waiting area, Caroline and Victor sat together, while the others drank coffee or paced anxiously. Stephanie told Caroline and Victor that Chelsea was relieved to have gotten all the alcohol out of her system. Victor noted how brave Chelsea was, and Caroline added that if anyone could beat the odds, it was Bo and Chelsea, because they came from a family of fighters.
Daniel went over last-minute instructions with the two surgical teams. Dr. Taylor advised everyone that as soon as they made sure Chelsea's pancreas was viable, they'd let Daniel's team know and only then would Daniel start Bo's surgery. Daniel reminded them they were working against the clock, adding, "I want shock and awe, beauty and poetry." He said he wasn't a big believer in luck, but Bo's condition made him the perfect candidate for the surgery. Kayla replied that she thought they needed all the luck they could get.
As the nurses were wheeling Bo's gurney to the operating room, Victor and Caroline assured their son that Shawn and Isabella would be watching over him, and the others uttered words of encouragement.
Hope met Chelsea's gurney in the hallway, and thanked her stepdaughter. Chelsea declared that Hope didn't have to thank her, because she'd do anything for her dad. Hope, choking back tears, took Chelsea's face in her hands and told her she loved her, and that she was proud of her. As the nurses continued on their way with Chelsea, Bo's team was just wheeling him to his operating room.
Chelsea stopped them so she could tell her dad she knew he didn't want her to have the surgery, but she was disobeying him once again. She continued that she couldn't live with herself if she didn't go through with it. She told him they were a team, and asked him to take good care of her pancreas. Chelsea then told her dad she loved him, and the nurses wheeled them both off.
In the operating room, the anesthesiologist introduced himself to Chelsea, and commended her on what she was doing for her dad. He explained that he was going to inject drugs into her I.V. to anesthetize her, and reassured her that everything would be fine. Dr. Taylor announced that Chelsea's pancreas was viable for transplant, and asked the nurse to call the other operating room and let them know.
In Bo's operating room, Daniel announced that they were going to give him heavy sedation, adding that they wouldn't be cutting him open until they absolutely needed to.
Dr. Taylor finished dividing Chelsea's pancreas and gave it to the nurse, who put it in a small cooler to deliver to the other operating room. Dr. Taylor then began closing Chelsea up.
Roman confessed to Hope that he wished his Pop were there, and that it was hard for him to see Victor with Caroline. Hope assured him that Shawn Sr. would be happy that Caroline had Victor to lean on. Roman told her Bo was lucky to be married to such a smart woman.
Steve went to check on Hope. She admitted that, though she was trying to be strong for Bo's parents, inside she was a mess, because she couldn't stop thinking about all the things that could go wrong in the surgery. Steve reminded her she had to stay positive, and said if she couldn't, she should come to him and he'd set her straight. She hugged him and thanked him for being such a good friend to her and Bo.
The nurse came out to announce that Chelsea's pancreas section had been removed successfully and they were closing her up now. Everyone cheered and applauded, and Hope asked how Bo's surgery was going. The nurse said someone would let them know as soon as they had any news. Hope hugged Steve happily, and asked him to pray with her. They closed their eyes, and began to pray aloud. Hope told God she wanted to hear Bo's laugh and feel his arms around her again, while Steve called on the "Big Dude" to help heal Bo.
Lexie told a still-unconscious Chelsea how well she'd done, then went to the other operating room to see how Bo's surgery was going. Daniel told Lexie she and Dr. Taylor had done a great job. When Lexie asked if Daniel needed her help, he replied, "Stick around. This dance is far from over."
3/20 Everyone is waking up after a long night in the waiting area. Steve and Roman worry over Bo’s fate. Steve goes to check on Bo. Hope and Caroline are with Bo, as Kayla and Lexie come in to check on him. Steve tries to pry Kayla and Caroline away just as Bo wakes up. They are all thrilled. Caroline reunites with her son and goes to the chapel to thank God for not taking Bo. Hope is now alone with her beloved husband, so grateful he's still alive. Bo is stunned to learn he had the operation. All in the waiting room are told the surgery went well and both Bo and Chelsea are awake.
3/21 Shawn and Belle next went to check in on Bo, and then announced they were leaving town. Bo and Hope were a little taken aback. Hope said she had thought they wouldn't set sail for at least a couple of weeks, and confessed that the mom in her was reluctant to see them go. Bo said his illness had taught him it was important not to put anything off, and Hope agreed that they should go while they had the chance. When Bo asked what they were going to do for a boat, Belle replied that John had offered to buy them a boat. Hope and Bo were surprised but pleased.
Shawn informed them that the marina had a boat similar to Bo's available, and that it could be ready for them to leave the next morning. When Hope realized it would be a while before she saw them all again, she got teary-eyed. Shawn and Belle promised her they'd be back before long, since both their families were there. Bo also tried to reassure her that things were different since they had sailed off on the Fancy Face years ago, because it was easier to keep in touch thanks to email and satellite phones. Shawn hugged his dad, and told him he loved him and would miss him, and Bo returned the sentiments.
Hope asked her son to give her a "really big hug, 'cause I know it's going to have to last me a really long time." She told Shawn she loved him and was proud of him. Belle told Bo she was glad he was going to get better. Claire climbed into her grandpa's bed so she could hug him goodbye. Belle thanked Hope for her patience and understanding, and Hope made Belle and Shawn promise to take care of each other.
Hope then took Claire in her arms and asked her to make sure her parents called often, and gave her a hug and kiss. As Shawn held the door for Belle and Claire, Bo called out, "Sailor Man." When Shawn stopped, Bo said, "Smooth sailing." Shawn gave his parents a salute, and Hope saluted in return. As the door closed behind her son, Hope broke down in sobs, so Bo put his arm around her and drew her close.
3/24 In Bo's hospital room, Kayla and Hope were chatting about their families. In particular, they discussed Sierra; Kayla's pregnancy; and Shawn, Belle and Claire's sailing trip around the world. Hope told Kayla that she and Bo were sad that the kids were leaving town and they would miss them, but understood how important the trip was for their marriage.
Just then Bo's monitor went off and it appeared that his body was rejecting the transplant. Dr. Jonas had assigned another physician to Bo's case who immediately entered the room and ordered a new medication and dosage for Bo. When Kayla realized what medication the doctor prescribed, she challenged him and forbid him to administer the drug to Bo.
Kayla referenced the treatment plan for Bo's particular type of transplant surgery and pointed out that the medication he recommended could have killed Bo. The doctor was speechless then apologized to Kayla and left the room. Hope was horrified to think what could have happened if Bo had received the medication. Hope was grateful that Kayla was there to step in on Bo's behalf. Kayla told Hope that she was going to recommend disciplinary action against the doctor because he should have reviewed Bo's medical chart before prescribing a new treatment plan.
Steve arrived at the hospital and asked Hope what had happened. She told Steve that Kayla saved Bo's life. Steve hugged Hope just as Ava arrived to see them embrace. Ava still believed that Hope was Kayla. Hope suspected that Steve was worried about something and questioned him. Steve hesitated to burden Hope with his problems but finally told her that someone was out to get Kayla because of him. Steve explained his connection to the Vitale family as well as his personal involvement with Ava during the time when he had no memory of his past life.
Steve revealed that Ava and her people admitted they were responsible for the plane crash that cost Shawn Sr. his life. Steve feared that Ava was mentally disturbed and would do something rash. Hope was shocked and frightened for the safety of Steve's family and urged Steve to go to the police. Steve explained that he needed to handle Ava his own way and Hope understood.
Hope told Steve that she remembered meeting Ava after Shawn's funeral and that Ava asked her if she loved Steve. Hope said she was frightened by the encounter and recalled that Ava acted strange. Steve told Hope he hired bodyguards to protect Kayla and Stephanie and would do anything to protect his family. Hope agreed and told Steve she would keep their conversation confidential.
Bo woke up and asked Kayla how he was doing. Kayla told Bo they had thought his body was rejecting Chelsea's pancreas, but everything was under control and he and Chelsea were both doing fine. She ordered Bo to get plenty of rest. Hope returned to Bo's room just as he fell asleep. Kayla convinced Hope to go home and relax. Before she left, Hope asked Kayla to take care of herself and the baby as Steve was worried about them.
3/25 Down the hall Bo woke up in his bed to find Kayla fussing over him. He joked, "I'm finding it hard to breathe because you are suffocating me. Stop hovering!" Bo gently pleaded with Kayla to go home and rest but Kayla refused, telling Bo that she would not leave him until either Daniel or Lexie checked in. Tired, Bo stopped arguing and thanked Kayla for being a great sister and doctor for him. When Bo asked if he could go see Chelsea, Kayla told him that Chelsea was doing well but that Bo needed to stay in bed to keep from rejecting Chelsea's pancreas.
Changing the subject, Kayla asked Bo about Shawn's sailing trip. Bo admitted he was disappointed that he would not get to see the boat before they left and that he missed sailing on the open seas. Steve walked in the room and again asked Kayla to accompany him home. When Kayla refused, Bo and Steve joked about how stubborn their wives were. Smiling in spite of herself, Kayla asked Bo if there were any of Shawn Sr.'s belongings that he would like. First Bo asked about the fishing poles he used with his dad when he was a kid, but Kayla sheepishly admitted she had already grabbed them to save for her baby some day.
Bo then asked about Shawn Sr.'s pocket watch, but Kayla explained that Roman had already snapped that item up. Finally Bo asked Kayla if he could have the one fishing pole with his initials carved in the handle, and Kayla happily agreed. As the three laughed in Bo's room, Daniel entered to check on Bo. With an edge in his voice, Steve asked Daniel where he had been hiding because another doctor nearly messed up Bo's medications. Kayla explained what had happened with the other doctor, and Daniel promised that it would not happen again.
Daniel examined Bo. Bo admitted to Daniel that he disagreed with Hope's decision to consent to the surgery because he did not wish to endanger his daughter's life. Daniel turned the argument around on Bo and told him that how Bo was feeling about his daughter was exactly what Hope was feeling about him. Grinning, Daniel told Bo that Hope was right and that Bo should stop "bitching and accept Chelsea's gift."
When Bo asked Daniel about visiting his daughter, Daniel had the same assessment as Kayla and told Bo to wait for Chelsea to come visit him since she would be released soon. With the exam concluded, Daniel gave Bo a sedative so that he could rest. However, even when Bo was sleeping he was restless, calling out Hope's name.
In the Salem Hospital parking lot, Hope talked on her cell phone to Caroline, explaining that she would pick up Sierra after she stopped at home to grab some things. As she hung up the phone, Ava snuck up behind her with a chloroformed rag and rendered her unconscious. Ava pulled Hope into the back of the car and took her back to Ava's house. Once back at the house, Angelo carried Hope into Ava's room and put her on the bed. "What the hell did you do?" asked Angelo. "I invited her back for a slumber party," Ava quipped.
As Angelo warned Ava that her father would be furious that she kidnapped someone, a groggy Hope woke up. Ava turned to Hope and said, "I have so much to discuss with you Kayla." Stunned Hope asked her if she just called her Kayla. Misunderstanding, Ava said that she knew exactly who Hope was. When Angelo asked Hope if she was Patch's wife, Hope stared blankly back at him. Ava then corrected Angelo, reminding him that Patch went by the name Steve now, to which Angelo reiterated his contempt for Patch and what he did to Ava.
Hope told Ava that she knew who she was, that she remembered her from the pub, and that Steve had told her they were involved. "He mentioned me?" chirped Ava as her face lit up. When Hope said yes, Ava's face darkened as she questioned Hope as to whether Steve had told her they were once in love. Hope confirmed that Steve had told her as much. Wild-eyed, Ava told Hope that she and Steve would be in love again as soon as they dealt with the situation.
When Hope asked what that was, Ava told her that she knew about the baby. "So you know about the baby?" Hope inquired as she casually rubbed her own stomach. When Ava talked about taking Hope out of the equation, Hope asked if Ava planned to kill her. Coyly, Ava teased that she never said that. Leaning in close, Ava warned Hope, not to get on her bad side. When Ava stated that she would get Steve back baby or not, Hope thought about Steve's plea to keep Kayla in the dark for the sake of the baby. Tilting her head up defiantly Hope agreed to talk to Ava and said, "After all, I am Steve's wife." Hoping to ease the tension, Angelo asked Ava to talk to him in the
hallway.
In the hallway, Angelo told Ava that the kidnapping was a terrible idea. Ava begged him to help her talk terms with Patch's wife. When Angelo seemed reluctant to go along with the plan, Ava started to cry and beg for his help, telling him that she would make the pain stop one way or another. Eventually Angelo agreed but asked her to promise not to hurt herself again. As Angelo and Ava set off to find food for their "guest," Hope snooped around inside the room and found photos of Bo, Steve, and Kayla.
3/26 Bo awakened in his hospital room and asked Lexie where Hope was. Lexie reminded him his wife had gone home to get some rest. He was worried when he couldn't reach Hope by phone, and when he learned that she hadn't picked up Ciara from the pub. Lexie tried to reassure him that Hope had been so tired she probably just hadn't heard the phone ring. A nurse then brought Chelsea by to visit her dad. Though Bo initially protested, Chelsea got out of her wheelchair and sat on the edge of his bed.
With a twinkle in his eye, he asked her to sneak him in a burger as soon as she got out of the hospital, then he took her hand in his. "I could beat you with a stick for what you did," he chided. "But thank you. You saved my life." Chelsea told him it was her way of repaying him after all the trouble she'd caused him. She put her head against his chest and he put his arms around her, and they talked about how glad they both were that the transplant was successful.
When Bo later called and learned Steve and Kayla hadn't heard from Hope either, Chelsea asked if he was worried, but he claimed he wasn't. Then the nurse returned to take Chelsea back to her room, and Chelsea promised to visit her dad every day until he went home.
Hope searched the room where Ava was keeping her prisoner, rifling through drawers until she found something with which she could try to pick the lock. Before she could get the door open, however, Ava entered with a tray of food, and warned Hope not to try to escape. Hope asked why Ava had kidnapped her, and Ava claimed she only wanted to talk. Since Ava believed Hope was Kayla, Hope played along, and asked how long Ava planned to keep her there. Ava told her it would just be until "Patch" got there.
When Hope asked why she'd sabotaged the plane, Ava got defensive and blamed it on her dumb cousins, who she said were only supposed to ground the plane. Hope reminded her that three people had died in the crash. When Ava showed no remorse, insisting she'd only done it to get Patch back, Hope told her she was crazy. Ava became irate and, eyes blazing, grabbed Hope by the arm, then seemed to relax a little when Hope asked how they were going to get Steve to come. Ava smugly said she wouldn't have to force him, and started reminiscing about how in love they'd been. She admitted that when he left her she hadn't handled it very well, and she still wasn't handling it well.
Hope gently asked if she'd be better once Steve came back, but Ava again insisted she was fine. Hope changed tactics and tried to convince Ava she didn't need a man to complete her, but that only caused Ava to swear she and Patch were soul mates and completed each other. She insisted that if given the choice between the two women, Patch would pick Ava. Hope asked again how Ava planned to get Steve there. Ava replied that she'd stolen a cell phone from her guard, and "Kayla" was going to call and tell him that if he ever wanted to see her again, he'd do exactly what Ava said.
3/27 As Bo painstakingly maneuvered from his hospital bed, Lexie entered and scolded Bo. He stated that he was concerned about Hope because her whereabouts were unknown. Lexie assured Bo that Hope was probably home resting. Lexie admonished Bo to stay in bed, for he could do more harm during the recovery process. He had undergone major surgery, and only time would dictate whether the transplant was a success. She told Bo to avoid jeopardizing his health. Finally, she agreed to contact Abe regarding Hope's whereabouts.
Ava directed Hope to call Steve. Hope was hesitant but followed Ava's orders. Steve answered the phone to hear, "Hello darling; it's Kayla." Ava was close enough to hear most of the exchange between Hope and Steve. After a few moments of confusion, Steve realized that Hope was on the phone and was obviously being detained by Ava. He played along with the conversation. All the while, Kayla was still in the room with Steve; however, she could only pick up on sparse pieces of information. Hope told Steve that she would be staying with Ava a while.
Ava snatched the phone from Hope and threatened Steve, "If you do anything stupid, it will put me in a really bad mood, and you know how I get!" She warned Steve that he must not tell anyone about the situation. When the phone conversation ended, a concerned Kayla asked Steve what was going on, and a disturbed Steve began to relate the truth to her. However, before he said more than a few words, Kayla winced in terrible pain, thus abruptly ending the conversation.
Ava reminisced about her time with "Patch" years ago. She shared with Hope the first time she met Patch. They were in the same taxi and shared chemistry from the beginning. Ava and Patch spent an increasing amount of time together. She was intrigued by the mystery that surrounded Patch, as well as his strength. Not long after, Patch began working for "the family business." Hope inquired regarding the type of business, but Ava avoided providing specifics. Ava admitted that her father was not fond of Patch but gave him a job anyway.
Ava and Hope's conversation continued; all the while Hope, using her police skills, questioned Ava's time with Steve. Ava confided to Hope that she and Steve were engaged and that she was planning an elaborate wedding. However, when her father did not approve of the marriage, she and Steve ran away, and found a preacher in the desert to marry them, but Steve left her at the alter. Ava then accused Hope of patronizing her, but she did go on to admit that after being abandoned by Steve, she went home and "got sick." This admission was alarming to Hope, but she tried not to show it.
Bo asked Philip for a favor, if Chelsea could stay at the Kiriakis mansion to recuperate? Philip did not hesitate, "I'll hire a nurse; she'll be in good hands." Bo relayed the message to Chelsea, who was sitting at his bedside. They embraced, and Bo thanked her again for saving his life. Chelsea, escorted by Max and Stephanie, prepared to leave the hospital.
Bo received a call from Steve regarding Hope's whereabouts. He told Bo to avoid contacting the police and that he could find her. Steve went on to reassure Bo that he would look out for Hope. They lost the phone connection, abruptly ending the conversation.
3/28 While Abe was reassuring Bo that he had officers out searching for Hope, Steve called and asked Bo not to involve the cops yet. Bo hung up and tried to convince Abe and Lexie that he'd overreacted, because Hope was probably just out shopping, and to please call off the search. Abe reminded him they hadn't been able to find Hope anywhere, and asked why Bo had suddenly changed his mind.
Bo shared that he'd had a bad dream about not being able to find Hope and claimed he was calmer now that he was more awake. Lexie cautioned him to relax, and after Abe left, she demanded to know what was going on. Bo asked her to just trust him and try to keep Abe out of it, and she warily agreed-but vowed that if Hope hadn't been found by morning, the deal was off.
Steve entered Bo's room, and as soon as Lexie had gone, Bo demanded to know what was going on. Steve began doling out the details slowly, but when he saw how upset Bo was getting, he related the short version of Ava's story. After Steve told him that Ava had kidnapped Hope, Bo wanted to know why. Steve replied, "For some reason, the crazy bitch thinks Hope is Kayla." Bo's eyes widened in shock and fear, then he became furious when Steve said he was waiting for Ava to call him back. Steve assured him that he knew how to handle Ava and that he'd bring Hope home safely.
Meanwhile, the cat and mouse game between Hope and Ava continued, as Hope pleaded with her captor to allow her to make another phone call. Ava refused, and explained that the reason she hadn't told "Patch" to come to them was that he would just call the cops as soon as he knew where they were. Hope asked what Ava's father would do if he found out Steve was back in her life. Ava smugly replied that she could get away with anything while her daddy was out of town, and that, though her guards worked for him, they were family and always protected her from him.
She added that because they blamed Patch for what happened to her, they all wanted him dead. Hope asked why Ava would put Steve in so much danger if she loved him. Ava claimed her father would accept it when he saw that having Patch back made her happy-and well. Hope warned her that it wouldn't be easy to get Steve back, so Ava wanted to know what was so great about "Kayla" and Steve's relationship.
Hope played the role of Kayla beautifully, and described for Ava how she'd almost immediately fallen in love with Steve when they met nearly twenty years before, and how they'd been together despite many obstacles. She continued that the only reason Steve had ever been with Ava was because everyone believed he had died in an explosion, and that he'd had amnesia afterward because he'd been manipulated by Stefano DiMera. Ava was stunned to learn all of this.
When Hope said Steve had come back to her because he'd remembered their love, Ava became enraged and told her to shut up, but Hope stood firm. She apologized for upsetting Ava, but added that she was upset as well. Hope gently suggested that Steve had been with Ava because he hadn't known who he was, and asked Ava to tell her more about her life with him. Ava angrily insisted that Patch had loved her once and would again, and that they would have a future together.
Hope calmly asked her to prove it by getting him there. Ava asked why she was so anxious, and Hope evenly replied that Ava would see how committed Steve was to her and the baby-and that she just wanted to get back to her life. Ava said that's what she wanted too, but they couldn't both have the same thing. Hope agreed, and reminded her they couldn't find out whom Steve would choose until he got there.
When Steve's cell phone rang, he noted that the incoming number was restricted, and told Bo it was probably Ava. He paused for a moment to consider his words, but after some urging from a frustrated Bo, Steve put the phone on speaker and answered it. Once Ava announced herself, Steve asked to speak to Kayla, but Ava refused. She told him to meet her near a roadhouse where they used to meet, in the alley behind the motel next door, in two hours. When Steve asked if Kayla would be there, Ava snapped, "Stop asking questions and do what I tell you to, otherwise you're never going to see your pregnant little wife again."
3/31 Ava told Hope that she was excited about getting back together with Steve. Hope reminded Ava that Steve would never agree to go back to her knowing she was responsible for a plane crash that killed three people. Ava insisted that she only asked her people to delay the flight so that she could have time for her long-awaited reunion with Steve. Unfortunately things went very wrong and Ava told Hope that she was very sorry that people died. Ava asked Hope to tell her about what happened before the crash. Hope, still pretending to be Kayla, explained the events leading up to Shawn's death and how Shawn sacrificed his life for his son, Bo.
Hope seemed surprised that Ava was genuinely remorseful about the crash and the loss of lives, especially about Kayla's father, Shawn. Ava asked Hope for her father's last name. Ava asked Angelo to allow her to leave the grounds as she had something important to do. Angelo was reluctant, but relented to Ava's wishes.
While Ava was out of the house, Hope searched for a way to escape from her room. Hope pried open a window that triggered the alarm system. Angelo entered the room just as Hope was about to climb out the window and warned her never to try to escape again.
4/1 A restless Bo woke up and struggled to get out of bed. After unhooking all the monitoring equipment, Bo slid out of bed and onto his feet. He promptly passed out onto his bed. A short time later Lexie came rushing in with a nurse and roused Bo. Only half awake, Bo muttered that Hope was in trouble. When Lexie asked him what had happened to Hope, Bo remembered his promise to Steve to keep quiet about the Ava situation. Now fully awake, Bo said he was just having a bad dream about Hope.
As Lexie started to lecture Bo for trying to get out of bed, Kayla showed up and chimed in too. Lexie then turned her attention to Kayla and asked why she was out of bed. Kayla claimed that she felt fine. As Steve had told Bo about Kayla earlier, Bo asked her why Stephanie was not still watching her. Turning his question around on him, Kayla asked Bo why Steve was not there with Bo as Steve had said he would be. Bo told her Steve had been there but had left as Bo grew tired. Lexie and Kayla then fussed over Bo, but he continued to reiterate that he felt exactly the same as he did before attempting to get out of bed.
After Lexie left to check on a patient, Kayla turned to Bo and demanded that he tell her what was going on with Steve. Bo resisted giving in, but admitted that he was trying not to upset her. As Kayla began to push harder for answers, her stomach started to cramp again. Bo rang for the nurse, and Lexie rushed back to have Kayla taken to a room to wait for her doctor to examine her. As soon as Lexie left with Kayla, stubborn Bo once again struggled out of bed whispering, "Hang on, Fancy Face. I'm gonna find you."
In Ava's limo, Steve jumped silently into the car. The two looked at one another for a moment, before Steve told her it was good to see her again. Ava growled that he should forget his wife because she was fine. Worried, Steve pressed for details and to see his wife but Ava would only remind him of his promise to marry her. Ava mentioned that things were different with her father, but she would not say any more. As Ava seemed to become more unraveled, Steve quietly told Ava that he still loved her.
Steve then asked how Ava had found him. Dancing around the question, Ava gave a speech about how they were supposed to be married with three kids and happy together. Steve told Ava that he did not see that happening. Angry, Ava warned Steve that she had the power and that if Steve so much as raised his voice to her again, she would take his wife and child away, never to be seen again. Steve again asked her how she found out about his wife, but Ava avoided the subject. Trying another tactic, Steve brought up the plane crash. As Steve talked about the events the night of the crash, Ava protested, begging him to stop talking about the crash.
Ava became increasingly twitchy while Steve spoke until finally she exploded, screaming that he was making her head hurt and that he would not like her when she got mad. When Steve asked her whether she felt any guilt about killing Shawn Brady, Ava looked at him with mild surprise. "You killed him," she said plainly. "You've hurt enough people, Ava," Steve pleaded.
Steve then asked her to work things out and to tell him what she wanted. When Ava offhandedly mentioned Steve's kids, a panicked Steve went rigid until Ava mentioned that she knew he did not have any kids yet. Convinced Ava did not know about Stephanie, Steve tried to play on Ava's affections. "So no one else gets hurt, I can be that man again if you still want," Steve promised. A moony-eyed Ava happily agreed and kissed Steve.
Back in Ava's room, Hope snooped around the bedroom. Underneath the mattress Hope found a scrapbook with clippings about Ava Vitali's rise to power in the corporate world. While Hope wondered aloud what had happened to Ava, Ava and Steve entered the bedroom. Hope started to rush over to Steve, but Ava cautioned her to keep her distance. Steve reminded Ava of her promise not to hurt anyone, and Ava promised not to as long as Steve held up his end of the bargain.
Ava's smile faded and she explained that although she loved Steve, she did not trust him since he was always a bad boy. Steve tried to argue that he was no longer a bad guy, but a disgusted Ava promised to fix him if Kayla had tamed him. Ava started to snuggle up next to Steve but broke away when she noticed her scrapbook sitting out. Taking advantage of Ava's distraction, Steve signaled to Hope to watch him for guidance.
4/3 In the presence of Hope, Ava asked Steve if he wanted to kiss his wife, since they had been apart for a while, but Steve said he didn't like public displays of affection. Ava found that to be ironic because he never minded showing her affection in front of others. He admitted to some "great stuff" with Ava, but he also stated that he mostly remembered trying to stay a step ahead of whoever was after he and Ava. Ava still insisted that Hope and Steve show affection, so the two embraced, but Ava interrupted them disgusted by their affectionate hug. Steve asked Ava what happened next in this kidnapping scenario.
Steve pleaded for Ava to let "Kayla" go. Ava said she could not. Hope, tried to increase her chances of being released, said she would be willing to go on without Patch in her life if Ava would simply release her. Ava did not buy it. She said that she couldn't just "trust him so easily." Hope interjected and said that Steve was a good man and could be trusted. Ava gripped her head as if she had a headache and yelled "shut up" to Hope and Steve. Hope continued that she should not be under stress due to her pregnancy.
Clearly frazzled, Ava began to pace and mentioned that she got migraines. She took a pill and told Steve that he was the reason she got migraines and that he had to pay for it. Steve apologized for hurting Ava so many years ago. She told him that he had to prove it by having dinner with her. Steve mentioned "Kayla" again, and Ava was very upset. She approached Hope saying that she needed rest due to the pregnancy. She placed her hand on Hope's abdomen; Hope swiped it away quickly. However, Ava looked at Hope suspiciously. "Wow! Your stomach is really flat; how far along did you say you were?" Hope brushed it off and said that she was lucky to be having such a great pregnancy: not showing, no morning sickness, etc.
Ava insisted that Hope be examined by a doctor just to make sure all was well with the baby. Hope said it was not necessary. The conversation turned back to the dinner "date" between Ava and Steve. Hope was escorted from the room so that Ava and Steve could have privacy. Without much hesitation, Ava proceeded to passionately kiss Steve. Outside of the room, Hope asked Angelo what was wrong with Ava. Angelo stated, "It's your husband's fault that Ava is the way she is." He admitted that he would have killed him long ago. He warned Hope to stay in Ava's good graces, or Steve would die.
4/4 At Salem Hospital, Chelsea stomped into Bo's room demanding to know why he had tried to get out of bed the night before. Bo cracked a few jokes but a frustrated Chelsea demanded to know why he would put his health in jeopardy. Chelsea told him that he needed to be careful, and Bo redirected the advice back to her by reminding her that she had risked her life to have the surgery against his wishes. Chelsea continued to press for answers about why Bo was trying to get of bed, but Bo continued to make jokes and avoid answering the question honestly. Daniel entered the room and sent Chelsea out in order to examine Bo.
Once the two men were alone, Bo pointed out that Chelsea had an obvious crush on Daniel. Daniel explained that a bond between a doctor and patient was not uncommon but that he was just friends with Chelsea. Returning to his exam, Daniel advised Bo that if he rested and recuperated, he could leave in a few weeks. When Bo protested, Daniel sternly warned him to let his body heal so that he did not screw up Chelsea's sacrifice. Bo agreed and Daniel left to finish his rounds.
A little later Caroline stopped by to see Bo and asked him what had happened the night before. Bo explained that he just missed his family but that the visit from Chelsea that morning reminded him of why he needed to get better. When Caroline joked about how Ciara missed her family too, she asked where Hope was. Bo half-heartedly explained that Hope was probably resting, but Caroline was immediately suspicious and pushed Bo for the truth. Bo admitted her instincts were correct because Hope was in danger. Worried, Bo asked her not to tell Abe or Roman, but instead to trust him and help him find a way out of the hospital.
In Ava's bedroom, Hope paced in front of the window, staring at the sunrise. Angelo entered with Steve. Once alone, Steve told Hope that he had never had dinner with Ava because she had passed out. Worried, Steve cautioned Hope that although Ava had always been wild, she had never been so unstable in the past. While the two talked, Ava crept in the room and asked them whether they were arguing. Acting quickly, Steve told Ava that his wife did not believe that they had not had dinner the previous night.
Taking her cue from Steve, Hope jumped in and argued that since Ava had been so excited to have dinner with Steve, Hope doubted that nothing had happened between the two of them. Hope then asked to talk to Ava privately so that she could hear the truth. Ava asked Angelo to take Steve out of the room and leave her alone with Steve's wife. When Hope again asked what happened, a beaming Ava spun a story about how she and Steve had talked and drank and made love.
Hope pretended to be angry and jealous, and Ava seemed to fall for Hope's ruse. Hope wondered aloud why Steve had not mentioned Ava sooner and concluded that Steve likely still had feelings for Ava since he was still so protective of her. Declaring the situation dysfunctional, Hope announced, "I deserve better than this." "What are you saying?" an excited Ava asked. "I don't want anything to do with that bastard!" Hope yelled.
With victory in sight, Ava asked Angelo to bring Steve back into the room. Hope increased the drama by yelling at Steve who then admitted that his feelings for Ava were complicated. With the words still in the air, Hope smacked Steve across the face and told him that she would not let him raise their child. "You're giving up?" Steve marveled. "It's hard to believe," Hope said quietly. "Yeah. I'll say," said a disbelieving Angelo.
Suspicious of Hope's easy defeat, Angelo suggested to Ava that Hope's performance was a little too convenient. Before Angelo could say any more, Steve's cell phone began to ring. Angelo and Ava were hesitant to answer it, but Steve begged them to let him answer since his brother-in-law was in the hospital. Ava relented, but pointed a gun toward Steve and Hope and warned him to be on his best behavior. Hesitant, Steve answered the phone only to hear Kayla on the other end demanding to know what was going on.
4/7 Kayla called Steve on his cell phone, which rang where Steve and Hope (who Ava thought was Kayla) were being held hostage at the Vitale house. Steve had to take Kayla's call at gunpoint and pretend that Kayla was a realtor. Steve told Kayla not to call him anymore and said that he couldn't talk to her, and then threw the phone on the floor.
Ava didn't believe that Steve was talking to a realtor and threatened Hope at gunpoint if he didn't tell her the truth. She demands to know why he through the phone on the floor? He claims that he doesn’t like to be pushed, not by a real estate agent, not by anyone. Hope said that if Ava hurt her or Steve that Ava would be in more trouble, and would never have the life with Steve that she so desired. To calm Ava, Steve told her that he loved her more than he ever loved Kayla, and that they should make a plan to leave for one of the islands and go to a nice quiet beach. They can forget all about “her”. She asks if they can start over and finally get married. He agrees saying, “Sure” as she gets a big smile on her face.
