DVD #11A 5/19 Jack arrives at the center and introduces his new friends to the gang. Kayla begins her spiel, and the officials are impressed. They aren’t too happy to see that Jack is with them. He points out that the center is in his congressional district. Jack is doing his best to sabotage things. He points out the hostage situation that occurred here. A sobered-up Monty enters just in time to tell them about the day that Raoul was killed, and that what happened to him was bound to happen because of the way he lived. However, he believes the Community Center has been good for his other children, April and Emilio. He now has hope for their future BECAUSE of the Center.

The officials agree that the Center is good for the neighborhood and approve their additional funding. Jack plays one more card in his attempt to close it. Jack raises suspicion about city officials being concerned about the drug problem in Salem and that they feel drug the center could be contributing. The officials agree that Jack has a point. Kayla acknowledges that there is a problem with drugs in the neighborhood but that existed long before the Center. Jack wants to see their drug inventory list and given they proximity to the Emergency Center they could get out onto the street. They look at April, Emilio, and then Steve as potential suspects as Jack points out their access. Suddenly, Steve finds himself a suspect in selling drugs! Steve gets so angry he walks out as Jack smiles with his success.

Kayla finds him moping on the pier. Steve rants about how the big officials listen to Jack because he puts on that Happy Jack smile while wearing his $900 suits while all they see in Steve is a drug dealer. Kayla calms him down, and points out all the people he has helped like Monty. She suggests that he goes back and shows them who he is or is he going to let Jack win? He goes back to the Center and apologizes to the bigwigs. They accept, and say they will give them another chance and be back in another week to inspect, they just need to solve the problem of the missing drugs to get their funding. After they leave, Steve is ticked off after they have worked so hard that they are jerking them around with funding. Kayla is thrilled and optimistic that they can accomplish this and they will get their funding. He softens by her warmth and pulls her close to kiss her and tells her what a ray of sunshine she is.

5/20 Jo is in the hospital after having a lumpectomy. Steve & Kayla are with her when Neil comes in to discharge her. Everyone is thrilled that her prognosis looks good. Jack comes in the room and gives Jo a beautiful bouquet of flowers. She's thrilled, however Steve is less than thrilled. He tells Jack he's not welcome there. Jo disagrees, and asks if she can have a few minutes alone with Jack. They have a wonderfully sweet talk as he really does care about her. He offers to take Jo home in style, he has the limo! Jo finally agrees. Steve has a problem with this, of course. Steve questions Jo about Jack's offer. He doesn't trust Jack. She says it has nothing about choosing a limo over Steve's car, it's an opportunity for her to spend some time with her other son. She wonders if maybe it's time to tell Jack he's Billy. Jo is officially discharged by Neil, and Jack comes in with a wheelchair. Steve still isn't happy.

5/23 Mike takes Diana to the Emergency Center with a burst appendix and Kayla is brought in on the secret surgery. After the surgery, Kayla comforts Roman.

5/24 Poor Steve is having one of his disturbing childhood flashbacks as his father yells at him that he will never amount to anything. Steve has been struck with melancholia. He tells Kayla she works day and night on this project and she deserves better than this and he should be able to give her better than this. He asks her who are they fooling here? Are they really helping anyone? She points out how Steve has helped Emilio. Steve snarks what a great role model he is! Kayla stops him and raves that if these boys turn out to be half the man he is they are pretty darn lucky. He doesn’t buy it. She reminds him of how he turned his life around and how he changed. He tells her that those dudes from Washington only see a street punk in him. She comments on what he is on the inside but he knows that doesn’t count. He warns her they won’t trust funding this place as long as Steve is part of it. He thinks the center would run better without him in the picture and walks out the door as she calls him back yelling after him that he doesn’t really believe that.

Emilio is pushing April to get more "stuff", when Kayla tells them about the emergency meeting they are having about the drug theft. Kayla tells Monty about Steve's funky mood. Steve decided to visit his old friends at The Cheatin' Heart. He ends up shooting some pool with his baby sister and they have a chat. Adrienne mentions finding Billy, and Camby overhears.

Adrienne is beating Steve at pool when Monty interrupts. He wants to know why Steve isn’t at the community center meeting. Steve doesn’t think he is needed. Monty tells him without him, he wouldn’t be involved at all and it has been a long time since Monty has wanted to be responsible for anything. He reports that working there has given him a new lease on life and Steve made that possible. He declares if Steve won’t go then he won’t either, but he really wants to go. Steve agrees and he and Monty head out.

Mike catches April stealing more drugs and grabs her. April tells Mike that she has been stealing morphine for her mother, who is dying of cancer. Mike makes Emilio and April go to the board meeting and confess. Meanwhile, Monty is spilling on of the dirty little secrets about the drug theft.

Jack enters the Cheatin' Heart, annoyed that Canby has summoned him here. Canby tells him that he overheard Steve and Adrienne talking about a missing sibling, Billy. He figures if they can find this missing brother, perhaps they can use him to get back at Steve. Jack approaches Adrienne, who's waitressing there, and smoothly inquires about her mother. He fishes for information about Billy. Adrienne informs him that her mother doesn't want to find Billy, but she admits she would like to find him. Jack tells Adrienne that he would like to work with her to find Billy, in order to help Jo out. Although reluctant to accept help from Jack, she tells him everything she knows about Billy, although it isn't much.

Kayla is happy to see Steve return. He isn’t sure that he belongs there, but he knows he belongs with her! During the meeting, Mike brings Emilio and April in and announces that they were responsible for the drug theft. Steve and Kayla jump up, horrified and in shock at the betrayal. He continues that it is for her mother who has terminal cancer and is in a lot of pain. Both Steve and Kayla tell them that they could have told them. Kayla determines that they won’t press any charges and will help Rosa. After the meeting, Steve thanks Kayla for hanging in there with him today. He vows to just be himself but sometimes he doesn’t fit in with the world but she always makes him feel like he does. She comforts him that they will both be all right if they are together.

Still fishing for more dirt on Steve, Canby approaches Monty at the bar, who tells him that his daughter April was caught stealing drugs from the Center, and those wonderful people, Steve & Kayla, let her go. Canby buys him another drink, hoping to loosen his lips even more. Canby gleefully tells Jack what he learned.

5/25 Steve and Marcus are boxing at the center, when Vanessa interrupts with good news. Charlene has decided to keep her baby (this is the baby that her and Marcus delivered). Marcus clearly doesn't think that this is the best decision as he thinks Vanessa talked her into keeping the baby and eventually she will decide to give the baby up. Steve says that if the baby was given up that there is no guarantee that she wouldn’t wind up to be a spoiled selfish jerk (obviously thinking of Jack). Charlene drops by the center with Vanessa. Marcus tries to explain to Steve why he feels the way he does.

Steve visits Jo and finds her crying. He tries to boost her self-confidence as she is feeling depressed after surgery. He tells her she is a good looking Adrienne and Jack meet in an alley and she is about to show him the picture of Billy when Steve walks up. Whew! Jack leaves and Steve finds the picture. He questions Adrienne what's going on, then finds the picture of Billy. He asks again, what's going on, then takes the picture from her. He tells Adrienne he is going to keep it! Steve tells Jo about what happened, then he gives the photo back to her. Steve tells Jo about Charlene. That opens up a can of worms.

5/26 Steve shows Kayla today's newspaper, with a front page article about them not pressing charges against April. Monty confesses to being the source but didn’t mean to. He tries to explain that he is so proud of the center and so grateful for the compassion they showed his family. He acknowledges that he told too much, and he only meant to tell the good stuff. Steve asks if he has any idea what he has done to this place? Jack arrives with a telegram from Washington notifying them that the funding has apparently been withdrawn. Jack is being obnoxious, and Steve tries to rough him up, but Kayla stops him. Emilio finds out and tears into his father. Monty asks Steve if he can forgive him, but he is silent. Of course Kayla forgives him. Steve is being defeatist and feels it is over but Kayla isn't ready to throw in the towel yet. He tells her to call another board meeting.

At the board meeting, Kayla tries to defend Monty's actions. There is a vote, and Monty is kicked off the board. Steve wants to have another meeting tomorrow. Monty comes back in and begs Kayla and Steve to cancel the meeting tomorrow, because something really bad is going to happen! Kayla wants to listen to him.

5/27 Monty warns Steve and Kayla again about the danger surrounding their up coming meeting about the center. She tells him it was moved to the loft. He says that there is darkness and danger all around and urges them to not have the meeting. Abe calls Steve and tells him there is vandalism at the center. Steve meets Abe down there and Monty arrives as well. Steve says this isn’t as bad as it could have been, some broken glass and spray paint. He says it is nothing that can’t be fixed. Monty tells him that the cards indicated a much bigger disaster and they are never wrong. Kayla is attacked in the laundry room of her building by the knifer. She fights the attacker and knocks over a can of gasoline in the process which starts a fire. She is able to pull off the knifer's mask, and is shocked to see who he is. An explosion takes place that rocks the building and buries her in rubble. Steve hears the explosion and screams her name as he rushes to get to her.

5/30 Steve is yelling Kayla’s name and braves the flames and falling debri to rescue her from certain death. Kayla is rushed into the hospital with Steve and Marcus by her side. Mike joins Marcus to treat her. Steve tries to follow her, crying her name but is stopped by an orderly. Shawn and Caroline come to the hospital. Lexie tells Steve that the explosion was accidental. Marcus and Mike come out and give them an update. She is a lucky lady with no burns but she took a hard knock to her head and has not regained consciousness which concerns Mike. They won’t know the extent of the damage or her concussion until she wakes up. Steve goes to Kayla's bedside. He keeps begging her to wake up so she can HEAR him tell her how much he loves her. Adrienne finds out about Kayla, and comforts her brother. Shawn and Caroline express their gratitude to Steve for rescuing their daughter. Lexie tells Steve that Kayla may have been attacked by the Riverfront Knifer. Steve insists on returning to Kayla's bedside. He wants her to wake up and tell him what happened, if that guy hurt her. He promises not to ever let anyone hurt her again.

6/1 It is the morning after the explosion, Mike convinces Steve to take a break from his bedside vigil. Just as they leave her room, Jack enters telling the security guard that he is her husband. Jack whines at her wanting to know why was she in the basement, why didn’t Steve protect her. He admits there were times when he wished she was gone, wished she was dead. But now he is sorry about that, she is so beautiful. He is upset to see the condition she is in. He whines why didn’t she love HIM, he never would have let this happen to her. He thinks he won and he should be happy but he cries in grief taking no pleasure in her being hurt.

(Not included Abe goes to the Deveraux’s first thing to question Jack. Harper lies and gives Jack an alibi). Harper finds Jack in Kayla's room, and tells him he's a suspect for the attack on Kayla last night, and they think the serial killer attacked her. He tells him he gave Abe an alibi for Jack.

Mike tries to warn Steve about what might happen when Kayla wakes up from a coma. Mike tries to warn him that Kayla may not wake up the same person. Steve returns to her room, and puts the engagement ring back on Kayla's finger and then she wakes up! Steve is happy that she is awake, and he runs to get Mike. Something isn't right, she can’t hear as she holds her hands to her ears. Mike tells Steve that Kayla's eardrums are damaged. Steve doesn’t understand why she can’t talk either and Mike encourages him to give her time. He says perhaps she can regain her hearing with surgery. Steve goes to get paper and pen so she can write a note. Kayla has a flashback of the attack and writes a note to Steve.

6/2 Her note says that she can ID who attacked her. Steve tries to get Kayla to tell him who attacked her. He asks her to write down the name and he is going to go call Shane for help. Steve tells Shane about Kayla’s attack. Kayla tells Steve she can't remember the attacker's face now. At the hospital when Kim arrives, Shane tells her that Kayla won’t be able to hear her. Emilio dons surgical scrubs and sneaks into her room to see for himself that she is going to be all right and says a prayer. He gives her his mother’s Catholic medals for protection. Steve finds Emilio coming out of her room. He goes in to check on her and sees the Medal that he placed in her hand. Kim goes into visit but Kayla never wakes up. The show closes with a montage of couples Shane kissing Kim, Frankie kissing Jennifer, and Steve with flashbacks of saying his unofficial vows to Kayla in the woods.

6/6 At the hospital, Steve tries to help Adrienne see Justin's side of things. Steve tries to convince Adrienne to make compromise with Justin.

At Blondie’s, Jack sees the Private Investigator he hired to find Billy Johnson. Jack tells him all that he knows about Billy. He offers to give him a baby picture, but when Adrienne comes in, she tells him Steve took the baby picture away from him and she doesn't have it anymore. However, she was able to give him the name of the orphanage in Los Angeles. He passes that information on to the PI, who still would like a picture of Billy. Jack arrives at Jo's apartment, bearing a huge bouquet of flowers. His ulterior motive is to search the place for a picture of Baby Billy. Before he gets too far, Steve arrives, bearing a smaller bouquet of flowers. He's not happy to see Jack, and makes no secret of it. Jack makes a hasty retreat, wishing Jo a speedy recovery. After he leaves, Jo tells Steve that she wants Billy to feel at home at her house.

6/7 Kayla has a nightmare dreaming about the attack. Steve comes in bearing yellow roses and is soon joined by Mike who tells them she can go home. She looks horrified as she doesn’t want to as she is still scared. Steve takes Kayla to a sign language class. She gets spooked and runs out, back to her room. The therapist comes to Kayla’s room and teaches them some signs and gives her some support.

6/9 When Kayla gets home, she and Steve try to adjust. Steve is up on the roof listening to “Lady in Red”. He takes her in his arms and they dance to their song and goes into a flashback of the fantasy version with Steve in his tux and no patch.

Jack comes by to see Kayla after Steve has left to pick up food. She doesn’t hear him pounding on the door. She happens to open the door to get her newspaper and sees Jack standing there but can’t hear what he is saying. She tries to shut the door on him. He stops her and tells her he isn’t there to cause trouble. Jack follows her in telling her he just wants to know how she is doing. She turns her back and walks away from him, and not understanding he tries to grab her arm. Steve comes in and yells at him for coming around after he told him to stay away. Jack just wanted to know if Kayla was all right. Steve tells him she lost her hearing and can’t speak. He blames Jack as all the trauma he has put her through, after hurting her, and taking away the funding for the community center.

Jack soon returns with a telegram from Washington that funding is being reviewed on Congressman Deveraux’s recommendation. Steve tells her he thinks they will get the funding. Steve leaves to answer the phone, as Jack tells Kayla to her back that he still loves her and always will. After he leaves, Adrienne calls and invites them to a party that night. Kayla does’t want to go but indicates she wants him to go. Jack tells Melissa that his next plan is to find someone from Steve’s past named Billy. She heads to let Steve know what Jack is up to. She doesn’t want to get in the middle of this but Jack knows about someone from his past, someone named Billy. She suggests that Steve tell Jack about this Billy to diffuse the situation before it gets out of hand and someone gets hurt.

Steve finds Jo at Adrienne’s party and reports that Melissa told him that Jack is going to find Billy in order to find something to hurt Steve. Jo wants to do something to stop him. Steve says to just let Jack do what he is going to do, he doesn’t have time to babysit him. Steve thinks if maybe they ignore him, that Jack will grow up. Steve only has time for Kayla right now. She comes into the party and stands in the doorway. A waiter with a tray of champagne glasses is trying to get by her but she doesn’t hear him. She turns into him and he spills the tray all down the front of her. She is overwhelmed by the sight of all the people looking at her and she can’t hear anything and she runs out.

6/10 Steve asks Kayla where she ran to when she left the party. She tries to turn away but he keeps asking her pointing out that the knifer could have killed her and had already attacked her once. She runs to the window and turns her back on him. He grabs the pad of paper and write her a note as he tells her they have to learn to communicate and begging her not to shut him out. She throws his note down and runs upstairs. Kim arrives in answer to Steve’s plea for help. She reports she is surprised he called her as she is sure he has heard about her life (she is working undercover as a prostitute with Shane to lure out the knifer). He tells her that he knows she is a good woman and they all gotta do what they gotta do. He confides that he is having a problem with Kayla, as it seems like she needs something that he can’t give her. She smiles as she says she finds that hard to believe. He tells her he is reaching out to her but she just shuts him out. Kim says she wouldn’t really do that, she loves him, she is just in a lot of pain right now. He knows she is scared to death but she won’t let him help her.

He asks her to tell him what to do to help Kayla. She doesn’t think he will like to hear what she has to say. Kim suggests that Kayla needs time to herself and if he is honest with himself, he knows exactly what she is trying to tell him. She says he has to give her that time. He asks if she is suggesting that he leave her, how would that help her? He says he can’t leave her there alone, she isn’t ready to take care of herself. Kim offers to stay with her and teach her to sign. Steve is worried that Kayla won’t accept it. She pulls the big sister card and thinks she can talk her into it. Steve takes off for a bit. Kim tells him not to worry that she will take good care of her. When Kayla comes downstairs, Kim startles her. Kim tells her that she needs a place to stay with no questions and says it is only temporary. Kayla rolls her eyes giving her attitude and Kim knows what she is thinking. She says this is for Kim, not charity for Kayla. Kayla gets tears in her eyes as she agrees, relieved to have her sister’s support.

Jo finds Steve at Shenanigan’s and asks if she can talk to him. She wants to talk to Steve about stopping Billy from finding out who he is. Steve doesn’t have time to deal with him, he is too busy with Kayla and has no patience for Jack Deveraux anymore. he has no time to think what is best for Jack. He suggests that he should just tell Jack the truth! Jo wants Steve to go to the orphanage in CA and get the records before Jack’s detective gets to them. Steve can’t believe that she wants him to break into the orphanage’s records. He tells her he has already given Jack too much and he wouldn’t walk across the street for him, much less go to California. Jo asks if she would do it for her? He tells her he can’t, he has to help Kayla right now.

Kim joins them and shares that she got Kayla to agree to her staying there. Kim suggests that this would be a good time for Steve to give her some space (cue SN is taking a short vacation!). Steve looks at Jo and says maybe he will take a trip to California? He goes home and gives Kayla a note asking her if she thinks it is okay for him to go but he won’t if she doesn’t want him too. She agrees with tears in her eyes and goes into his arms as he holds her tight. He tells her how much he loves her and will miss her. Later Steve tells Jo is all set and he is on his way. Kim finds a teary Kayla looking at a picture of Steve. Kim teaches her how to sign, “I am sad”. Kayla cries in her sister’s arms.

6/13 Kayla has another nightmare and remembers seeing a face and saying, “It is you!”. She writes a note to Kim that she saw her attacker’s face but it was blank. Kim begins to teach her words in sign language.

6/15 Kim continues teaching Kayla sign language. Kim gets a call from someone who threatens her to stay off the streets or he will kill her like the other ones (Note: It is Alan, Eve’s friend to keep her away from Shane). Marcus comes by bearing muffins. Kayla is moping because she misses Steve.

6/17 Jo visits Kayla and she asks her where Steve is and why is he avoiding Kayla? Jo hugs her. She assures her that Steve loves her very much, that he is doing a favor for her. He is rearranging the paperwork so Jack won’t find out he is Billy. Kayla writes that she wants to help. She asks Jo to call Jack and have him come over. She leaves a letter for him. Jack stops by and Kayla gives him the letter asking him to stop looking for Billy.

In her letter she reminds Jack of how kind and caring he was when they first met, and he could be that person again. She points out that he put their differences aside to get the community center re-opened. She needs a favor and she knows that somewhere inside is that same gentle man that she first met, she knows he will do this for her. She knows that he is looking for someone from Steve’s past and urges him to stop and let it go or he will just be hurting himself. He tells her that he is sorry, he doesn’t know what she is talking about. He can’t, he is sorry. She grabs the letter back from him and rips it up.

Kayla gets a love letter from Steve, telling her that he will be home tomorrow and how much he misses her and closes it, “I love you sweetness.”

6/20 Kim continues teaching Kayla. Kayla isn't in the mood for her lesson today. Steve's coming home today, and Kayla is frustrated because she feels helpless. Kimberly gives Kayla a pep-talk.

Jack meets with an investigator about finding “Billy" at the airport. Coincidentally, Steve happens to be there too! Steve is returning home from his CA trip and overhears as the detective gives Jack all of the information he needs to find Billy Johnson. As Jack goes to read the file, Steve interrupts teasing that they are there to welcome him home. Steve asks if they have a one way ticket somewhere. Melissa stops him from reading it and urges him to wait until he gets home and can look at it in private.

Steve comes home and reunites with Sweetness. Melissa arrives and tells Steve about Jack's impending discovery, but Steve isn't interested. Kayla wonders why Steve isn't concerned? Steve tells Kayla about he switched documents at the lab and Jack has a fake file. Steve tells Kayla that he doesn't like Jack and doesn’t want him for a brother. He says he hates him, without him they would be married and would be happy! Kayla signs to Steve that he needs to face reality, that she may never hear again. He doesn’t care, he wants to get married. She tells him that she does care and she is in silence and feels isolated and that they can't get married now. Steve gives Kayla a snow globe and she is touched and signs that she loves him and he signs it back. She runs into his arms having gotten through to her, and he hugs her and tells her how much he loves her as she kisses his shoulder.

Dvd #11B 6/21 Monty and Steven are taking a stroll on the pier. Monty worries when he overhears Emilio talking about money with his gang friends. Monty tells Steve that he wishes he could help his children with pocket money. Steve tells Monty about a job opportunity at the Community Center as a janitor. Monty is grateful and accepts. Monty is still worried about Emilio's plans. Steve offers Emilio that if he needs money to let him know, though Emilio gives him attitude about charity. Steve catches Emilio in the middle of a robbery. Steve follows the gang members and tells them they are in trouble, and are under arrest and going to jail! Steve gets through to them and they give him the money he ripped off so he can return it and he won’t turn them in.

Shane goes to see Kim at Kayla’s wanting to know if she has made any progress. Kim reports no that Kayla had a bad nightmare and she doesn’t want to risk damaging her memories. Kayla sees them arguing and wants know what's going on. Shane tells Kim to tell Kayla the truth about them and the case. Kayla wants to help them catch the knifer. Kayla wants to remember the night of the attack. Kim takes Kayla back to the night of the attack. Kayla tries to remember the attacker's face, but gets frustrated when she can’t. Kim assures her she will when she's ready to remember. Steve tries to cheer up his Sweetness. He asks if they can spend some time together? She signs that she is going to her parent’s house, and he asks if he can go with her and she says that would be nice. Kayla is worried that she has changed. He tells her that nothing has changed and she is still the same person. He signs that he loves her and she seems reassured, as they walk and kiss on the docks.

6/23 Marcus drops by Steve's apartment. Steve gives him the low-down on Jack's wild goose chase for Billy Johnson and Steve went to CA and switched the adoption files. Kayla pops in and tells Steve she wants to go to the Community Center and asks him if he wants to go with her? At the center, poor Kayla seems a bit lost. Emilio comes in asking for help as there has been a big knife fight. Kayla stands in the doorway as the gang members are being treated and she can’t hear what is going on. Overwhelmed she goes back out to the front. A gang member comes in demanding to know where his friends are. When Kayla does’t answer, he grabs her and grabs her around the throat demanding that she talk and talk fast. Steve comes out and grabs the guy away from Kayla Melissa goes to the Emergency Center and brings Steve & Kayla up to date on Jack's search for Billy. Melissa pleads with Steve to tell Jack the truth. Kayla gets upset when Steve won't tell her what is going on. Steve comes clean with Kayla about what Melissa said. Kayla admits that she still feels isolated. Jack breaks into Steve's apartment, and finds his baby picture!

6/24 Steve goes home and finds his choo choo train and has a childhood flashback of him and baby Billy. Then he realizes the picture of Billy is missing and says to himself, “This is bad!”. Kayla drops by and Steve tells her somebody has stolen the photo of Billy. Steve & Kayla suspect that Jack took the baby picture. Steve needs to make sure Jack doesn't figure things out but he fears it's too late. Steve & Kayla talk about what would happen if Jack found out he was Billy.

Jack meets Melissa on the pier and shows her the baby picture. He tells her where he got it. He's trying to figure out why Steve would have a baby picture of him. He suspects that Steve is trying to "get" something on him, to get back at him for what happened with Kayla. Melissa visits Steve at his apartment. She tells him that Jack has the baby picture and wants to know why Steve has it. Melissa tells Steve that she knows Jack is Billy. He tries to pretend he doesn't know. She tells him she found the adoption papers. He still pretends he doesn't know. She presents all the evidence and he finally admits it's true. She says she's going to tell him the truth, no matter what! Steve tells Kayla that Melissa is going to tell Jack everything. Jo comes in, very upset. She tells them that she thinks Jack has Billy's baby picture. Steve tells her that Jack broke in and took it. He tells her that Melissa is planning to show Jack his adoption papers. She says that Steve needs to get to the adoption papers before Melissa can show them to Jack. He agrees to try to get the papers out of Melissa's apartment. Steve & Kayla are in the car outside Melissa's apartment. He doesn't want to go in, but he has to. She waits in the car while he goes inside. Steve finds the papers just as Jack and Melissa arrive.

6/27 Steve enters Melissa's apartment with a flashlight. He searches through cabinets and drawers until he finally finds what he's looking for. As he begins to read them, he hears Melissa and Jack coming in. He hurries to the fireplace and throws them in. They come in and pandemonium sets in. Jack gets the papers out of the fire and opens them up. He can't believe his eyes. He realizes that these papers are what Melissa wanted to show him. He doesn't believe the papers are true, that they are just a hoax. Steve tells him that they're true, but Jack thinks it's Steve trying to get back at him. He runs out the door, still holding the adoption papers. Kayla comes in as Jack runs out. Melissa feels oh so guilty. Melissa and Steve talk about how Jack is going to handle this. Melissa blames herself for not telling him sooner. Steve said they are all to blame, for trying to think for Jack.

Steve and Kayla go to see Jo and tell her that Jack saw his adoption papers and knows he is her son. Steve assures Jo that everything will be all right. Jo opens her door to find Jack standing there as Steve and Kayla are in the other room unseen. Jack tells Jo that Steve is trying to make him believe that he's a Johnson. Isn't that ridiculous? As Steve & Kayla look on, Jo tells him it's true, and Jack is crushed. He can't believe this is happening. Jo tells him that she is his mother and that she loves him very much. Jack vehemently denies that he could ever be a part of her family. She shows him a picture of him when he was a baby sitting on her lap. He still doesn't believe it. She shows him the necklace that matches the ring from his mother, proving that she is his mother. He glares at all of them, and tells them he'd rather be DEAD than be Billy Johnson, as he throws the ring across the room. Kayla comforts a heartbroken Jo, as Steve goes after Jack.

Jack is sitting on the steps of the pier, holding his baby picture. He has a flashback of Steve trying to give him his kidney. Steve finds Jack at the pier and tries to explain things to him. He tries to make him see that Jo loved her children and tried to do what was right. Steve tries to convince Jack that he never stopped loving his baby brother. Jack promises Steve that he'll always hate him. Back at Jo's, she's asking Kayla what she's going to do. All she wanted to do was protect her kids, yet she ended up hurting them.

6/29 Kayla comforts Steve on the pier. Steve & Kayla go back to their apartment and talk about things. Steve is upset with himself, and Kayla tries to convince him that he did the right thing. He's angry because everything he did to protect everyone was all for nothing. Everyone still got hurt. Kayla tries to advise Steve to make peace with Jack. Steve remembers back to the orphanage, promising Billy he will never leave him. He has a visit from Adrienne, who tells him she knows about Jack being Billy. She scolds him about keeping the secret from her. Steve tells Kayla he needs to go and try to work things out with Jack, for Jo's sake. She wishes him luck. Steve goes to the Deveraux mansion looking for Jack and he and Harper get into it. Jack arrives home and he's not thrilled to find Steve there. He asks Harper to leave them alone to talk. Steve tries to offer an olive branch to him, but Jack isn't receptive. They argue, and Steve keeps trying to reason with him, but Jack tells him to get out. Steve tells him he'll get out of his house, but he won't get out of his life, and he grabs him in a hug, which Jack breaks. 6/30 Kim tries to get Kayla to remember about night she was attacked and Kayla remembers pulling something small off of him. Steve comforts a frustrated Kayla. Kim and Shane look around the laundry room for what Kayla pulled off the attacker, when he finds a melted piece of something gold. Steve tells Shane that Kayla is out of this. Shane leaves to take it to Abe at the PD to get the piece analyzed.

On the pier, Jack fields questions about the adoption. Steve and Kayla are watching the bogus press conference on T.V. Steve and Kayla are watching it on TV, when she suddenly shuts it off, and looks at Steve in horror. She seems to be remembering something. Kimberly tells Steve that they may have some evidence that could lead them to the killer. He tells her about Kayla's reaction to watching the press conference and that Kayla is upset. Kimberly tells him she will talk to her. Kim recommends that Steve should leave them alone so they can chat. Kim goes over Kayla's memories with her again, and this time she remembers and writes down the attacker's name. Kim is shocked and tells her to lay down as she calls Shane at the police station. Someone sneaks into Kayla's as she is resting. The knifer sneaks downstairs and grabs Kim. Steve finds Jack out walking and tries to make some small talk, but Jack tells him to get lost.

7/4 At Abe's office, Shane tells Steve that they may have a clue in the killings, but Steve tells him to keep Kayla out of the investigation. Shane and Steve argue about involving Kayla. Abe tries to calm Steve down while Shane shows Steve the evidence they have. Steve is in shock, while Shane triumphantly tells him he thinks they've got their man. Shane has a hunch Jack may know who the killer is. Shane tells Steve that Jack bought the gloves, but they were gift-wrapped. Jack arrives for questioning and is he TICKED OFF. Steve tries to tell him to stay cool and don't dig himself into a hole, but Jack doesn't trust him and believes Steve is behind all this. Shane invites Jack to have a seat and shows him the gold buckle off of a riding glove. Jack remembers buying a pair of riding gloves but doesn't see what the big deal is. He tells them he bought them as a gift for Harper. Abe asks where Harper is, and Jack says he and Anjelica are heading over to the July 4th festivities. They coordinate their plan to bring Harper in for questioning, and Jack wants to know what's going on? Jack figures out that they think Harper is the Knifer. Jack can't believe they'd even think it. Abe invites him to go along with them to talk to Harper. Abe and Jack leave, while Steve is on the phone, trying to reach the loft.. Steve wonders why Kim isn't picking up and starts to worry. Steve and Shane head over there. Hurry!

Kim is grabbed from behind, and she screams, while the phone line is still open. She rips off his ski mask, and says "Oh my God, it's you.” Kimberly is screaming bloody murder, but Kayla can't hear her. Kim fights off the knifer and is able to pull off his mask, and reveals him to be Harper. He drags Kim upstairs to the roof, as she throws her cameo on the floor for Shane to find. Harper ties Kimberly up on the roof. Harper continues to terrorize Kimberly, but at least he removes her gag. She tries to reason with him and offers to help him, as she can see he is mad as a hatter. He gets angry. She tells him that Shane is on his way, but he knows she's lying. He says he's going down to get Kayla and says he's going to get rid of both Brady sisters. Harper goes back for Kayla, and when she sees him, with the knife, she remembers the night of the attack. He grabs her and takes her to the roof. Kim asks Harper to untie her so she can sign to Kayla. Harper gets Kim to sign to Kayla what is going to happen, as he rambles on like an insane person. The boys arrive and Shane finds the cameo downstairs and knows she never would have taken it off. They now know something is very wrong.

Up on the roof, Kim continues to get through to Harper but he is ready to throw Kayla off the roof. Kimberly lunges for Harper, but he pushes her down and she's knocked out. Steve finds the door to the roof open. Steve makes it to the roof in time to find Harper ready to toss Kayla off the roof. He's a raving lunatic but Steve keeps trying to reason with him. Shane sneaks up on Harper, but he still manages to push Kayla over the edge. Steve grabs onto her arms to keep her from falling. Steve pulls Kayla to safety, as the police arrive and arrest Harper. It doesn't take Abe long to realize Harper is crazy and treats him a bit kinder. They take Harper away, still claiming he's innocent. Steve comforts Kayla as they watch the fireworks go off.

7/5 Steve and Kayla are asleep, but she's having a nightmare, reliving what happened the night before. She awakes with a start, and Steve comforts her. She tells him she doesn't know if she'll ever feel safe again. He convinces her to go with him to the police station. Steve, Kayla and Roman have a nice moment at the police station. Roman meets Steve and Kayla at the police station. Steve has to remind Roman that his sister is deaf. Steve calls Peggy in so she can counsels Kayla. Kayla tells Peggy that she still feels scared. Peggy tells Kayla that things won't change until she can accept that she's deaf.

Jack finds Steve in Abe's office. He asks him how many lies he had to tell to get Harper into this mess. Steve tries to convince Jack that Harper was trying to kill Kayla all along, but Jack defends Harper. He is so delusional that he actually thinks the whole thing is a setup! Steve asks Abe for his help in convincing Jack of the truth. In an attempt to assist Steve in his plan to prove Harper's guilt to Jack, Abe asks Jack to come into his office for a few questions. He then leaves him there, while he goes off on a phony errand. Steve has gone to visit Harper, who throws a fit and wants him out of there. Steve sits down at the table, and presses a hidden button under the table, which activates a tape recorder up in Abe's office. Jack can now hear everything that Harper says. Steve continues to press Harper for answers and Harper becomes more and more agitated. Steve credits him that it was very creative how he decided how to clean up prostitution. Steve asks why he targeted Kayla? The crazy look comes over Harper’s face as he says she had to die for what she did to Jack, that no one scorns a Deveraux. He admits he tried to kill her with the poison but Steve stopped him. He only wishes he could have killed more of those worthless whores on the waterfront, but says that Kayla would have been his prize.

A devastated Jack hurls the tape recorder across the room. Jack bursts into the interrogation room and blasts Harper for lying to him. He produces the tape and Harper realizes Jack heard everything. He confesses everything. Jack goes back to Abe's office and finds Steve there. Steve apologizes for what Jack's going through and tries to give him a pep talk. Jack tells Steve he doesn't want anything from him, just for him to leave him alone. Steve says okay and leaves. Harper confesses and Jack is horrified as he overhears the confession. Jack busts in and reams Harper. Steve tries to make peace with Jack, but Jack isn't in the mood. Kayla is worried that Jack will never let her go. Steve is convinced otherwise.

7/7 Steve gets mad after a phone conversation with Jack's lawyer. Steve wants to pay a visit to little brother, but Kayla stops him and tells him she needs time before they get married. Steve agrees to give Kayla more time, but he still wants to get married. Jack drops by the loft and wants to talk to Kayla. Steve tells him that isn’t a good idea and he doesn’t want him talking to Kayla. Jack points out that Steve will have to be there to translate. He tells him he will be getting something he has had coming for quite some time. As Jack leaves, Kayla comes downstairs, wanting to know what's going on. Steve doesn't know, but he's not happy about it.

Jack comes back to the loft with his lawyer. Jack is there to end his marriage to Kayla, and the lawyer gets out the papers. Kayla motions to Steve, and an emotional Jack wants to know what she's saying. Jack wants Steve to tell Kayla that her 'husband' is there to give her an uncontested divorce, in due haste. Steve is stunned, and he signs it all to Kayla, who is confused. As Jack turns away his pain from them, Kayla signs the necessary papers. Jack wants Kayla to know that it's a painful moment for him and he had thought they would have been together for a lifetime. Steve doesn't know what to say, and Jack makes a glib remark. Steve tries to express his appreciation, but Jack is doing it for Kayla. Jack tells "Miss Brady" that it's all over and says goodbye.

Steve romantically signs a love song to Kayla and proposes. She says no and he can’t believe it. Kayla tells Steve she needs to be happy with herself before she can get married. Kayla asks to be alone, and she tries to give him the ring back. Kayla is writing in her journal, fantasizing about the kind of wedding she wants to have. She remembers the most beautiful wedding she ever saw, and she's wistful for her own wedding she wants with Steve. Alone on the pier, Steve is playing the harmonica, and he sits on the bottom step, just as Jack comes along. Jack nearly leaves, but then resigns himself to staying. Why isn't Steve off celebrating? He tells Jack that Kayla needed some time to herself. Jack sits down and surmises that neither of the 'Johnson boys' was meant to have her. Steve insists that he will have Kayla and he will make her happy. Jack is in pain as he looks across at Steve.

7/8 Marcus tells Kayla that she can have the operation now to restore her hearing. Unfortunately, Kayla doesn't want it. Steve tries to calm her fears, but she is afraid and doesn't want to be pressured. Steve starts to take out all of his frustrations on Marcus. No worries, because Marcus doesn't take it personally. Charlene stops by the loft and brings baby Vanessa with her. Kayla gets a soft look on her face as she holds the baby. Charlene encourages that maybe one day they will have one of their own. Charlene has made a romantic dinner for Steve and Kayla to enjoy at the loft. As they sit down to dinner, Kayla tells him that hope isn’t enough, she has to work to make her hope come true. She tells him she wants her dreams to come true and she will have the operation. Marcus stops by the loft and hears the good news and Steve tells him about Charlene's visit. When Kayla leaves, Steve admits to Marcus that he is scared. Later, Steve comforts a scared Kayla.

7/11 Mike stops by Kayla's loft with good news, he can do her surgery tomorrow. Kayla is ready, but clearly apprehensive. Steve is surprised that it is so soon. Steve tries to give her a pep talk about getting married. Kayla tells Steve that she can't marry him if the operation doesn't work. He warns her they will not be happy apart. Steve decides it's time to bring in the calvary, Peggy. Kayla decides to write a letter to Steve. Later, Kayla gets situated in her hospital room. Mike stops by Kayla’s room to talk to her and Steve and give them encouragement. Steve reads Kayla's letter and then he finds her journal that she has left out. Kayla is alone at the hospital, obviously afraid and trying to muster her courage before the surgery.

7/12 The next morning, Mike comes to see Steve and Kayla at the hospital about her operation. Mike tells her about an ear specialist that he has tried to call on Kayla’s behalf like twenty times and was never able to get through to him. He suddenly has shown up in Salem and is available to do her surgery. Kimberly visits Kayla, and things get sentimental. Mike carts off Kayla and Steve says goodbye. The surgery begins. Steve overhears Jack telling Angelicia that he is responsible for getting Kayla the specialist, but he doesn't want anyone to know. Steve compliments him how nice that was to do and gets chocked up as he thanks Jack and pats him on the back. Steve falls asleep and he has a dream about his future with Kayla as he talks to his guardian angel, “Steve”. He tells him that Kayla is giving up and begs him to do something.

Angel “Steve” goes to see Kayla as she has an out of body experience as she interacts with him while she is unconscious during her surgery. He talks to Kayla about marrying Steve while Real Steve finds out that Kayla is out of surgery. He asks if she doesn’t want to marry Steve because of him only having one eye and she indignantly says that isn’t the reason. She is trying to explain that she has to be happy with herself before she can commit to a life with Steve. The angel tells her that the thing that makes Steve special is his love for her, and her love for him. Angel Steve shows Kayla a conversation between Real Steve and Jo in the lounge as he worries whether Kayla will marry him. Angel tells her that she has taught Steve how to open up and how to love and if she leaves him, she will hurt him real bad. Steve learns that Kayla is out of surgery and visits an unconscious Kayla while Angel Steve takes Kayla away to his Angel World. Kayla tells the angel that she loves Steve with all of her heart but sometimes that isn’t enough.

7/13 Steve snuggles unconscious Kayla who hasn’t woken up from surgery. Meanwhile, she is taking a magic speedboat ride with Angel Steve and he shows Kayla all of her wonderful past memories with Steve. An awesome S&K montage! He helps her remember all the love they have shared and realizes it doesn’t matter if she can hear or not. She wakes up to find she is in his arms as he lays in her bed holding her while she slept. He tells her how worried he was and signs if she is okay. Steve gives Kayla her ring back and tells her there is no pressure, but it is her ring and asks her to put it back on. Kayla wants Steve to ask her again to marry him.

Once again, Steve tells Kayla how much he loves her and that she wants her to be his wife and asks her if she will marry him? This time she says yes! Steve is thrilled and cries with joy. Awww. He tells her this is the happiest day of his life, she says hers too! Steve asks Kayla why she changed her mind? Kayla tells him about seeing Angel Steve. Jo pops in and Steve tells her the good news. Jo is thrilled and immediately begins asking a million questions about when, where, cake, pictures? Steve laughs and tells her to slow down. When he asks her when she wants to get married, Kayla says as soon as possible. Steve and Kayla set the date for a week from Friday. Jo is shocked that it would be so soon. Steve encourages her that it will be a simple wedding with just family and friends.
