While editing the Nov-Dec scenes found a couple of the tapes that were darker, another tape had been missing. I was unhappy with the overall quality of the scenes and by the time I got to Jan, I pretty much was debating discontinuing this series if I couldn’t provide improved quality. Found a couple of other replacements to cover pre-emptions, missing shows. Quality of those scenes was not as strong but important for completeness. I wound up re-editing huge chunks of the first two dvds when I was able to borrow some original tapes and provide some slight improvement on quality and add in some additional scenes.
Because I wasn’t completely satisfied with the quality on the #13B, I have added an additional 4 hour bonus dvd, a #13C at no additional cost. The quality in Jan for the #13C edit is much improved being able to use original source episodes over the dvd-rs (just lost too much quality). I am much happier with the quality from Jan onward and have tapes right now into August, so will continue work on this series knowing I can provide fair decent quality. There will always be glitchy episodes along the way with 30 year old tapes, but they have held up surprisingly well. So I had already decided to do this one, and went back and redid all of the Jan scenes to improve the quality. I am overall satisfied with the #13C as the quality from the tapes holds up much better.

Steve & Kayla #13 October 7, 1988 - February 8, 1989: 12 hour original edit
DVD #13A10/7 They meet the priest and Steve's preliminary questions indicate they've found the man they want to talk to about the marriage license. They spill their guts about Benjy and the priest says his name would in a book they have. The book says Benjy's mother, Ellen Hawk, married a David Hadley.
Lucky for them, Hadley, is located nearby and amazingly the priest immediately has an address and directions for them. Steve, to his credit, is silently suspicious. As they leave, we see the priest go to another room where another man, who he says is the real priest, is bound and gagged.
They arrive at the address and Patch asks a female resident if she speaks English. Not only does she, it's incredibly unaccented. Oh, now she develops a slight accent and broken English. Steve continues to be suspicious and points out that Benjy's father spent all this effort remaining hidden and now he's easy to find. Steve uncovers a bible and discovers a family tree indicating that David Hadley is long dead. Kayla tries to remain optimistic, but Steve shoots that feeling down. He insists they leave and as they do, an explosion rocks the home and gives us a Friday cliffhanger.
10/10 Steve and Kayla realize each other are fine after the explosion on the island which has destroyed the house. Steve comes across the woman they talked to earlier and she finally vaguely tells them they should be afraid of the father. Suddenly, a crosshairs graphic appears on the screen and someone shoots at Steve. Several shots miss and all three take cover. Steve knows a way off this island.
The next thing we know, he and Kayla are back at the monastery, where they learn Benjy is missing and a monk has been killed. When the monk leaves, the monk they feared was dead rises up, tells them he fooled his attackers and that Benjy is safe. Benjy comes out of a hiding place and this day's attempt at advancing the storyline is pretty awkward and decently convoluted. (Recapper notes, “Almost feels like something is missing, perhaps it was scrapped before or after filming.”)
Steve shows the monk who pretended to be dead a scrap of a picture of Benjy and a man Steve believes to be his father. The monk tells them they had better leave now.
10/12 Steve shows the government agents around to let them see Benjy isn't there. He and Kayla say they don't know where he is and Steve is arrested on contempt of court charges. Kayla is at the station. The Feds won't release Steve and Roman's not really thrilled about how everything's been handled from their side so far. She shows Roman the photo of Benjy and his faceless father.
Roman notices the ring in the photo and he wants to talk to Benjy. Kayla refuses to tell Roman where he is. Steve is brought to Roman's office to see Kayla. He's happy she didn't say where Benjy was. Kayla worries about Steve being in prison and he reassures her. They seal it with a kiss.
10/14 Kayla goes to see Steve in jail and wants to get him out, but he tells her he can handle it. He's staying strong so they can keep Benjy. She says she has a plan to get him out of there. She says she has lost focus on the things that really matter and she's willing to give up Benjy on the conditions that they can select foster parents. Steve refuses and says Benji needs them, so she can't give him to anyone in exchange for him being freed. Jo goes to see Steve and tells him she heard some people talking about breaking Harper out of jail.
10/18 Kayla goes to see Steve and tells him she's worried about him being in there, but he assures her he's fine and not to worry it'll be over soon. Steve antagonizes Harper some more and Harper suddenly shows signs of ill health. He is taken off. Steve wants to make a phone call (to inform Abe) but is refused.
Kayla meets with Abe at the station, telling him she knows Steve is working undercover. She tells him about Jack's cryptic comment. Steve knows something is up with the guard when he keeps making excuses to keep him from making the call. In the meantime, Harper is being taken to the hospital and Steve is drawing the guard's ire with his questioning. The guard brings in Abe to deal with Steve. He leaves and Steve tells him about Harper's illness. Abe finds out that instead of the infirmary, Harper is being sent to University Hospital. They know he's about to try to escape.
Kayla is back at the restaurant and tells Jo about Steve working undercover. Jo feels bad about him taking it upon himself to deal with Harper. Abe and Steve, in his prison blues, are pursuing the ambulance and Harper. Everyone in the ambulance was in on the plan. Abe and Steve come upon the ambulance a little too late. Harper and his armed henchman have escaped.
Jack is at Blondie's, making himself very visible as he and Victor discuss Harper’s escape. Kayla walks in and he makes some snide remarks to her concerning Steve's safety in prison. At the prison, Steve is giving Harper a hard time. A guard comes in and sends Steve on a phony errand. He passes the smuggled pills to Harper and tells him to take them now.
Before too long, Harper is doubled over in agony, and the guard sends someone for the Warden. Steve is immediately suspicious and asks to make a phone call. He's told forgetaboutit! The guard kicks over Steve's bucket of water and sends him off to get more. While they're gone, Harper is smuggled out on a gurney, supposedly to University Hospital.
The crooked guard ushers Steve into a cell with his mop and pail, when Abe arrives to speak to the prisoner. Steve fills him in on what's been going on there tonight, and when the warden arrives, he tells Abe that Harper was just transferred by ambulance to the hospital. Abe and Steve take off. In the ambulance, Harper's drugs are wearing off and he's feeling better. They have a change of clothes for him.
At Blondies, Kayla and Jo arrive for dinner. Kayla fills her in on why Steve is in jail, and Jo nearly spills the beans that Jack was the one she overheard discussing Harper's escape. Victor and Jack are quietly celebrating that their plan went off without a hitch or so they think. Steve and Abe are in hot pursuit. Harper is wondering where his limousine is, and is told it's across the field. Behind the wheel of the limo, is none other than Emilio. Abe and Steve arrive at the ambulance, but find it's empty. They set off in search of Harper.
10/19 Kayla and Jo both worry about Harper's plans for a jailbreak and Steve being the one in charge of keeping an eye on him. Kayla and Jo both notice Angelica’s arrival. Kayla returns from a phone call to tell Jo that Steve left the prison with Abe. Kayla and Jo continue to debate Steve. They give Anjelica the evil eye as they leave.
Abe and Steve split up to look for Harper. Abe spots something, but before he can do anything about it, Harper or one of his minions knocks him out. Steve finds Abe, who is conscious but injured. The shootout continues. Harper's goons get him into the car and orders Emilio to drive. Steve joins Abe in the police car and tells him he might have hit someone. Harper's goons debate his injury. They call Victor and give him the update and Jack overhears that Harper has been shot. He wants to go to his father, but Victor warns him to stay away from Harper as they can have nothing to do with him from here on out.
Kayla drops by her parents' and sees Carrie and Caroline. They are unaware that Steve is on Harper's trail. Carrie is sent off to bed and Caroline asks what's up. Kayla admits to her mother than Harper is out and Steve is chasing him. Caroline tells her to spend the night there.
Kayla looks at the mantle and all the Brady children pictured with their spouses. Roman is pictured alone. That's the picture Kayla grabs. Caroline wanders back in and they start talking about the fight she had with Roman over him questioning Benjy. Abe wants to call off the search because of the hour and the darkness, but Steve refuses.
Jo drops by to see Kayla at her parents' home, hoping she's heard news. She has not. Kayla tries to reassure Jo that everything is okay with Steve. Neither feel too good about that, though.
Harper is taken by his minions to a cabin. Emilio protests being involved in this and the goons hold a gun on him and force him to stay. Steve and Abe come across the cabin. The goons notice them, threaten Emilio and send him out to take care of it. A nervous Emilio tries to brush off Abe and Steve, who aren't buying it. They bust their way into the cabin, but Harper and his goons aren't there. They leave as Abe thinks they hit a dead end, but Steve doesn't.
10/21 Marcus tries to keep Kayla calm as she hasn't heard from Steve. Abe and Steve are back at the station, upset they haven't found Harper yet. Emilio carries Harper's injured body into an airplane. He starts looking around for a potential escape, but the goons are very aware of his thoughts. The goons hear a noise and pull a gun, only to unexpectedly find Jack. Seems Victor's contacts gave him accurate information as to Harper's location. Jack insists that Harper needs a doctor. Smartly, they realize that sending for a doctor runs a good chance of alerting the cops. One goon says he has a plan and talks to the other goon in private. They decide to send Emilio for a physician.
Steve and Abe are trying to figure out where exactly Harper could be. Steve says Jack isn't big enough for this level of planning, but he may offer some clues. Marcus tries calling the station to soothe Kayla, but gets a busy signal. He says he's going to the station himself to see what he can find. Marcus finds Steve at the station and tells him that Kayla is worried. He decides to go to the emergency center to pick her up as he fears for her safety.
Emilio is getting last-minute instructions about procuring a doctor. Just his luck, there's no doctor, but Kayla is there. Emilio doesn't want to use Kayla but the goon insists that there is going to be trouble if he doesn't. Realizing there is equal trouble with Kayla, he slyly drops a card on the floor that gives their location.
Marcus and Steve come in just after Kayla leaves. Another nurse fills them in on what happened and how nervous Emilio was. Steve is starting to put two and two together about his strange appearance at the cabin and again at the emergency center.
Kayla arrives on the plane and finds out it is Harper who needs a doctor. She refuses and Emilio tries to hint that there could be trouble. Jack, who is listening in and watching a monitor, sees her arrive on the plane. Kayla is trying to talk her way out of dealing with Harper, saying she's not qualified. Not working, she refuses to help this murderer. There’s a medical bag for her and a gun on Emilio as he begs that they are threatening his family.
The nurse remembers that Emilio was smoking. Neither Steve nor Marcus remember ever seeing him light up and debate on his involvement. Steve and Marcus realize that Kayla's disappearance could be connected to Harper's escape. Jo notices the card on the ground and picks it up.
Jack worries about both Harper and Kayla. Jack tells Victor's goons to tell Kayla to stabilize his father, but don't tell her that he's involved. Kayla continues to refuse to help Harper, until the goons point a gun at Emilio. Poor Emilio is now having to be a medical assistant of sorts and Kayla tries to dig the bullet out. She removes the bullet and declares him stable.
Steve and Marcus head for the airport. Kayla isn't thrilled that Harper looks like he's going to make it. Jack is relieved and tells Victor's man that it's time to move Harper out. The goon with Jack says that before they fly Harper out of there, they have to kill Emilio and Kayla. Jack starts pleading otherwise and we end on this cliffhanger.
10/24 Sound warbles. Steve and Marcus show up at the airport's control tower and are rightfully asked who they are and how they got there. They explain and the guy thinks they are nuts. Marcus tries to get Steve to calm down.
Jack tries to talk the goon out of killing Kayla and Emilio. No dice, so Jack tries to bargain for just Kayla's life. Still not happening and Jack is told that anyone who gets in the way will also be killed, meaning him if he causes trouble. An apologetic Emilio hates that Kayla is being put through this and shares that he left a clue at the emergency center. He's more optimistic about their chances than she is. Despite not getting in contact with Abe, the flight tower guy is willing to let Steve start searching. He and Marcus think they have the proper plane figured out when Abe shows up and says they're not going anywhere.
On the plane, Emilio realizes that they don't want witnesses, but figures Kayla's safe as Harper needs a nurse. Abe tries to reason with Steve about him barging into the plane. Harper's plane asks the tower for clearance and Steve has a plan to satisfy everyone. Marcus demands to be with Steve on whatever this is entails.
Steve and Marcus arrive on the plane in disguise as mechanics. Emilio talks a goon into getting coffee with him to give Steve and Kayla alone time as Harper wakes up. Harper recognizes Steve and asks what is he doing there? As the goon comes back in and questions what Harper said. Kayla passes it off to the other thug as him being delirious. Marcus has to talk Steve out of doing anything rash and they leave the plane as Kayla is increasingly terrified.
Emilio tries to reassure Kayla that Steve will still save them, then hints that he himself would even give his life for her. Abe says the SWAT team will be there in 5-7 minutes. The tower requests that no guns be fired inside the heavily-fueled plane. Steve is going crazy and gets even more nutty when the plane again requests to take off. Only then does Abe say they have to take action now.
Emilio tries to stall the goons. Abe, backed by Steve and Marcus enter the plane but it devolves into a stand-off. During this, the goons lose track of Steve (but it seems that Emilio and Kayla haven't, watching their eyes). Just when the goons think they have the advantage, Steve jumps the lead goon and the right people get control of the situation again. More cops arrive to arrest everyone, including Harper, who throws the most perfect lecherous grin Kayla's way as he's being led away. Kayla thanks Emilio for his efforts, then Steve thanks him as well. He departs and Steve and Kayla start kissing.
10/26 Sound warbles. Steve tells Kayla he is free, and has it in writing too. Jack arrives at the loft ready to take Steve's head off for nearly killing his father. Steve accuses Jack of being behind Harper's escape, but Jack vehemently denies it. Steve grabs him by the lapels and pushes him around. Kayla has a turn at him next but Jack continues to deny his involvement.
They tell him to get out, but before he leaves, he threatens them to stop slandering him. Kayla tells Steve that Jack deserves to be punished. He's not going to walk away from it this time. Steve promises he won’t. Kayla gets Steve to admit that he has to get proof of Jack's involvement in Harper's escape.
Jack catches up to Kayla in the park and thanks her for saving Harper's life. She doesn't want his thanks and she'll never forgive him for putting her in that position. Kayla begins reaming Jack for his concern for Harper. It bothers him that she has no faith in him. Jack gets out a few weak threats at Steve before he departs.
Steve goes to Jo's and blasts her for not blowing the whistle on Jack before Harper escaped. He wants her to go to the police now and admit Jack's involvement in the prison break, but she tells him she can't turn Billy in. It's all her fault that Billy turned out the way he did, since she's the one that gave him away. Steve tries to convince her otherwise and says he can't let Jack get away with it.
Steve tells Kayla about Jo's knowledge of Jack's plans for Harper's breakout and her refusal to go to the police. Kayla says they have to move forward and forget about everything else. They start to get romantic and he says he has further plans to cheer her up. Steve leads a blindfolded Kayla to her surprise. It's Benjy. After exchanging pleasantries, Benjy asks Steve when he can come home. Soon, he hopes.
A pagoda is seen and flash a man's hand going through various pictures: Diana, Kimberly, Shane, Steve, Carrie, Benjy, Kayla, and lastly a photo of Roman.
10/28 Steve doesn't want to dress up for the Halloween party. He tells Kayla, he'd rather go as something simple, like a truck driver. The phone rings and someone tells him to give Benjy back to his father, then promptly hangs up when Steve starts questioning him. Steve tells Kayla about the call. He suggests they carry on as normal, saying that if Benjy's father knew where the boy was, he'd be doing more than threats.
Roman asks Steve and Kayla to talk to Benjy and Steve refuses. Kayla admits there was a threat and Steve pulls her aside to tell her not to even tell him that as Roman has been acting weird at times. Roman tries to convince them on the grounds that Benjy's father is catching up with them and controlling their lives. Steve finally relents.
Roman is at the cabin with Steve, Kayla and Benjy. Roman asks Benjy who the man in torn photograph is. He says it's his father and he recognizes the ring Roman has. He asks the name of his father and Benjy gets scared and doesn’t answer. Steve cuts him off there.
10/31 Glitchy. Everyone arrives at the Halloween party, lots of cute costumes. Steve is dressed as a cowboy and Kayla as a saloon girl. Carrie is kidnapped during the party. Roman gets a note saying your child for mine, and he knows they mean Benji for Carrie. No one has seen Carrie and they can’t find her, but do find a single shoe that she was wearing as part of her costume.
Roman is ready to cooperate in order to get Carrie back. He argues with Steve and Kayla about giving Benji to his father so he can get Carrie back. Later, Steve tries to comfort Kayla. She hopes that the ISA will come through, but he doesn’t think they will be able to help this time. Kayla refuses to give up Benji to some crazy father. He agrees with her. Kayla worries that Roman knows where Benji is. Steve tells her that he will go up to the cabin and will move the boy if he needs to.
Steve calls Kayla to check in. He tells her that he is going to take Benji away until things cool off. He doesn’t want to take any chances, he wants him away from the authorities including the ISA. This will take Kayla out of being in the middle of this, and keep Benji safe. He tells her he will be in touch.
11/2 When Kayla admits that Steve left last night, Roman can’t believe she didn’t tell him. He cries that this is his daughter they are talking about, remember Carrie he asks her? Kayla tells him this is why Steve took Benji so she wouldn’t have to make that choice. He reminds her she is a Brady and has know Carrie her whole life. She asks him if it was a choice between her and Diana if he would choose her because she is a Brady, trying to point out the impossible choice he is asking of her. She cries that she loves Carrie, and he hugs her as they share their grief.
11/10 Steve calls Kayla and tells her that he is at their cabin in the mountains where they said their vows. He urges her to be careful not to be followed. Kayla calls Shane to let him know she is going out of town to meet Steve. He insists she tell him where she is going in case of emergency and promises he won’t tell anyone, not even Kimberly. She tells him the cabin’s location near Mystic Lake.
After he hangs up, we realize she was talking to Drew who impersonated Shane. He immediately calls Stefano and gives him Benji’s location. Stefano’s goons are there and they kidnap Steve and Benji. When Kayla arrives, the cabin is empty. She frantically tells Marcus that they disappeared and something has happened. She thinks Benji’s father found them.
11/11 Benji is able to run away and returns home to the loft. He tells Kayla and Marcus some bad men have Steve. Shane goes to see Kayla about the message she left him. He is puzzled when she insists she spoke to him on the phone. Steve manages to get free, but doesn't get too far before he is caught again. Steve is placed in a magician's trunk, as Shane arrives with Kayla and Marcus.
11/14 Darker episode. Benji takes her and Marcus to where he and Steve were taken. She finds Steve’s wedding ring in the room he was held captive. They search for Steve but are unable to find him. Drew introduces the magic trick, as the gang stands around looking puzzled. As the trunk is being lowered into a tank of water and the announcer, Kayla realises that is where Steve is and he is about to die if they don’t get him out of there fast! Stefano plans on making an example of him to all of the Bradys. Her and Marcus work to free him just in time. Steve and Kayla are reunited with Benji, who was safe with Kimberly.
Later, Steve and Kayla are home in bed. She tells him how afraid she was that she was going to lose him. He reminds her that he is the tom cat with 9 lives.
11/17 Shane goes to see Steve and Kayla and is shocked to see Drew there with Benji. Drew brought Benji a big stuffed bear, which has a tracking device inside. After Drew leaves, Steve asks Shane what is going on between him and Drew? Shane makes excuses for Drew, not yet accepting the truth. Steve points out that after Kayla talked to Drew the other day, that Stefano’s goons soon arrived at the cabin that only he and Kayla knew about. Shane excuses it was just a misunderstanding when Kayla spoke to Drew and thought he was Shane.
Drew calls Stefano and tells him he gave Benji the bear, with the tracking device in it. Steve tells Shane his take on Benji's father being after all the Brady’s, wanting revenge. Kayla defends that Shane has been part of the Brady family for years and she knows he would tell them if they were in danger. After he leaves, Steve warns her that Shane is not being honest with them and is withholding information the ISA has.
11/18 Steve and Kayla discuss the situation with Benji and his father. Steve refuses to give the boy back to a killer. Drew finds Peggy and Benji at Shenanigan’s. Drew calls Stefano and tells him he just found Benji and he is s going to bring Benji with him to the island. He pretends to be Shane and takes Benji with him, without any incidents. When Steve and Kayla arrive, they are shocked that Benji isn’t there. Steve and Kayla learn "Shane" picked up Benji and head there to ask him about this. When they arrive, Shane is clueless and they argue about Drew.
11/22 Steve and Kayla go to the hotel where Roman and Diana were staying, and learn they haven't been there for a couple of days now. Steve and Kayla head to the island. Meanwhile, Stefano conducts to music and greets Drew with caviar as he arrives bringing Benji. Stefano is overjoyed to see his son and seems to truly love him.
On the island, Steve and Kayla ask if the hotel receptionist has seen Roman and Diana. Yes, they're supposed to be in room 210, but they haven't been there in about two days, though they still have possessions in the room. Steve finds out that Roman and Diana rented a boat and headed towards the island. He and Kayla decide to go looking for them on the island.
Stefano tells Drew that Steve and Kayla are also there (he has also kidnapped Kimberly), and he has allowed them to land on the beach. To prove it, he goes over to a green radar screen that looks like Antarctica and points out where they are. Steve has a bad feeling about this island. Kayla's more optimistic. He rightly points out that Benjy's father went to a lot of trouble to get his son there, so Benjy's probably safe. Them? That's a different story. Steve is very wary about the quietness of the island. He wants Kayla to stay back as he does some investigating.
Later, Benji tells Stefano that he misses his friends Steve and Kayla. Stefano tells Benji that he will soon see his friends again. He is able to track them because Kayla is unwittingly carrying a teddy bear with the tracker in it. He shows Benji where they are on the screen as the tracker sends a signal, and tells them that they will be there soon.
Steve kicks around some dirt and notices a wire connected to a bomb. Kayla hears something and expects Steve, but sees it is Benjy and they joyfully embrace. He tells her that he lives there, with his father. She goes to take off with him, but is met by Milo and his weapon. Steve returns to find a teddy bear, but no Kayla. He also sees little footprints and knows Benjy was also there. Two thugs find Steve, beat him down, lay his body in a raft and say the "sharkies" are going to take care of him.
Kayla is brought to a room and finds her sister being held captive there. Kimberly tells Kayla that she was lured there with a phone call telling her that Shane had been in an accident. Kayla shares that they came here looking for Diana and Roman, and Benji. She tells Kim that she found Benji, that he is there with his father.
As Kimberly asks that important question, who is Benjy's father? The door opens and it is Stefano, happily toting Benjy. Stefano reminds everyone the Phoenix rises from the ashes. Kayla finally puts two and two together and realizes he is Benjy's father. Stefano psychologically plays with Kayla and Kimberly and says they will be joined by others soon. Kim asks why? Stefano says it is to be a Brady family reunion and laughs evilly.
11/23 Steve is banging on the door trying to Shane’s room, he is not happy. Hey have Kayla and he wants answers now. Shane shares that they also have Kimberly. Steve wants answers, especially since he was recently shark bait.
Shane agrees, but then doesn't tell him the whole truth. He says that someone the ISA wants pretty badly has Kayla and Kim, but doesn't admit it is Stefano. He tells him he is a very dangerous man. Steve is furious that if Shane had been honest with Steve, that Kayla wouldn’t be in danger now. Steve then brings up a very good point. After calling Shane stupid for being a company guy, he reminds him that every single time the ISA has put mission ahead of family.
Steve is ready to go back to the island and it is Shane's turn to have a good point. You got on the island? It's because someone allowed you to get on the island. Getting back there is another story. For the first time, Steve is also more naive about Drew than Shane. He wants Drew's help, and Shane is noticeably uncomfortable before ignoring the suggestion. Shane then says he has his own plan of getting on the island, but refuses to say what it is.
Shane and Steve are at an office and Shane says that when the helicopter comes, they will go to the island. Steve doesn't believe it is that simple to get the pilot to take them there. Steve knows something is up his brother and if he is going to help them. Shane refuses to give details, but Steve demands that he tells him what the plan is. Shane admits that they are up against Stefano DiMera. Steve threatens to tear him apart for keeping that information secret, but Shane requests that he wait until they get everyone home. He then outshouts Steve by saying that he is calling the shots right now.
Shane has called off the deal with Victor to set up Stefano, as he doesn’t want to risk Kimberly’s life. Victor calls Stefano, he double-crosses Shane but he ends up not double-crossing him all the way. He holds some information back, such that he and Shane are both aware of Iago's real identity. Stefano alerts Drew that Shane is setting up a trap for him.
At first, Drew says he's not going, but Stefano insists. Also, the instructions have been changed. Stefano wants to know if he can go against his brother? Drew assures him that he can. It is unclear if Stefano and Drew know his identity has been figured out.
Steve wants some answers before he agrees to work with Shane. He wants to know who is on the chopper that Shane is trying to protect. Shane admits it is Drew. Steve then half-sarcastically asks that if Drew is working for the ISA, why is he working with DiMera. Shane refuses to say and then Steve realizes Drew really is working for Stefano. Shane says they have no proof and tries to paint Drew as an independent of sorts, trying to convince both of them that really is the case.
He keeps rambling as Steve tries to tell him to wake up (by comparing Drew to Jack). Shane says it's different, that he and Drew grew up together and then blurts that he saved his brother's life. Steve doesn't pick up on the significance of that statement, though.
Shane crouches and hides as Drew enters at the airstrip. He then loses his nerve and decides to talk first. Shane looks for answers, tries to make Drew say he's just a rogue agent. Drew tries to tell him otherwise, but it doesn't sink in. He then pulls a gun on his brother. Shane asks why and Drew aims.
We return to see Shane on the floor, knocked out, and bleeding from the mouth. At that moment, a henchman shows up saying he caught Steve sneaking around. Drew says let's do him a favor and bring him with us. Steve is confused, especially as they leave Shane on the floor. Stefano is interrupted by the gift of Steve. "But you see, this is Kayla Brady's husband. Thought you might enjoy a matching pair." He agrees. Steve is getting more confused.
Dvd #13B 11/24 Kim and Kayla try to find a way out, as Steve comes in, followed by Drew holding a gun on him. When Kim goes up to him and calls him Shane, he points the gun at her and tells her to get back. Kim is shocked by Drew, as Stefano says he is following orders, but Drew is really Shane, as he shows Kim his ring as a signal of who he is.
Steve spills the beans about Drew, as Shane tries to save them. Kim tells Shane she wants the truth, now. After Shane works out a truce with Kim, Drew returns and catches Shane, and reveals his true personality. Stefano has everyone gathered for Thanksgiving, as Roman thinks the third man was Shane, as Shane tells him it was Drew. Stefano comes in to watch what is about to unfold.
11/25 Kim asks if anyone knows what is going on? Stefano comes in and urges Shane to tell everyone his secret. Kimberly asks Shane what he is talking about? Stefano goads Shane that he is afraid of ruining what he has with his wife and her family.
Roman declares it is part of Stefano's plan to try to turn them against each other. Roman states that Bradys stick together. Stefano asks if he can count on his brother-in-laws loyalty? Drew pipes in that Shane is loyal all right, to HIS family. Shane says he regrets bringing Drew back.
Shane is forced to tell them that Drew was held with Roman, all those years ago when they all thought Roman was dead. Shane admits that the ISA knew Roman was alive. Kimberly asks why he wouldn’t have told them? He says how could he? They could only get one of them out, and he had to choose Drew. Kayla doesn’t believe Shane would have done that. When Drew taunts him again, Shane declares if he knew the truth about who Drew is that he would never have brought him out and would have saved Roman instead.
Stefano waits for them to crack, smirking the Brady family is not so invincible after all. Kim strongly declares that if Stefano is trying to pull them apart, that he has underestimated them. They will stick together not matter what Stefano says or does. Roman steps in and agrees, the past doesn’t matter, they are more united than ever. Kayla chimes in and agrees as well, they are a family united.
Stefano tries his next ploy as he observes that Roman can not erase his training, which was to serve Stefano. Diana comes in and says he can’t do that. Stefano offers to give them a demonstration. Stefano says that he can turn Roman into an assassin right here and now. Roman states Stefano doesn’t have that kind of hold over him.
Stefano torments him with a memory of a hit on an ambassador in Hong Kong. He brags that Roman always did whatever he wanted him to do and he will again. Roman tells him to stop, that it won’t work. Stefano taunts him that he could put him to the test by ordering him to go after a member of his own family.
Stefano seems determined to get revenge on Roman for what he did to him, the precious price that Stefano pedi for what Roman did but doesn’t give specifics as Roman looks puzzled.
After Stefano leaves, Roman worries about the trances he has been having. He worries that if Stefano puts him in a trance, what would happen if he ordered him to kill one of them. Kayla doesn’t believe he would kill anyone he loves, and Diana agrees. Beni surprises them all when he enters, and Stefano follows demanding to know why Benji is there. Roman had a flashback of a little Benji running away from Stefano as an explosion goes off. Stefano tells him he will pay dearly for what he did to his son.
Roman can’t believe that this is what this is all about? He is holding his daughter for what happened to his son. Roman demands to know where Carrie is. Stefano tells him not to worry about his daughter, but to worry about the other members of his family. After he leaves, Kayla asks what Stefano is talking about? Roman has to go after him.
Both Shane and Steve offer to back him up. He turns them down, as they are all there because of something that happened between him and Stefano a long time ago. He won’t risk them, and it is time for him to deal with this. Steve and Kayla decide to rescue the children, while Diana is going to help Roman as she can get him out of the trance if Stefano does put him under. The guards stop them from leaving the room.
They sit down and as Kayla worries about Roman. When Shane states that Roman has put them in danger. Steve snarks at him that he should have thought about this before he kept this secret all these years. They start arguing as Kim defends her husband. Shane retorts that Steve has hardly walked the straight and narrow over the years and he would think he of all people would understand past mistakes.
Steve points out his past isn’t putting anyone in danger right now. Steve demands to know how they can trust him, how does he know that he isn’t working for DiMera like his brother. They jump at each other over the table and start fighting as dishes crash, and the girls start screaming about a fight. As the guards rush in, Diana slips out the door. Steve and Shane take on the guards and knock them out.
11/28 Steve is happy now the guards are tied up. Steve and Kayla take off to look the children. They find Benji and Carrie but hear Stefano coming and they hide after asking Benji not to tell that they are there. Stefano rushes in relieved to find the kids still there as there are no guards at their door. Stefano asks Benji if everything is alright? If anything unusual has happened here? Benji doesn’t tell him anything. Stefano emotionally tells Benji that everything he does for him is because he loves him so very much.
Stefano tells him they are going to leave here very soon. He tells she will be starting a new life together with him and Benji as she looks at him in shock. After he leaves, Steve and Kayla come out of hiding. Kayla tells Benji that it is time to go. He shakes his head no. She begs him to come with them, to trust them, as it isn’t safe for him to stay here now.
Steve and Kayla take the kids down to the beach. They find Shane and Kim. Steve wants to get them off the island but Carrie doesn’t want to leave without her dad and Diana. Roman pops through the bush and tells her that she doesn’t have too! Carrie rushes into her arms. Steve tells them to follow him to the boat, as they hear guards in the distance shouting to come this way. Steve and Kayla leave with the children on a boat, as Shane and Kim stay behind to help Roman and Diana.
11/29 Steve and Kayla arrive back on the mainland, they are soaking wet. He tells them they just came from the island on a raft. Steve tells the Harbormaster at the marina, Gus, that two of their friends are still on the island and need help. Gus offers to make the call to the Coast Guard, and of course calls to alert Stefano. He promises to keep them there. He comes back with hot soup, and urges them to get warm under the blanket. Steve is puzzled when Gus stalls as far as help arriving due to the fog. He points out they came from the island in a raft, so surely the Coast Guard can make it if they could.
Steve gets quiet and lost in thought as Kayla asks him what is wrong. He is pulled to go back to the island to help Roman and Shane. Kayla assures him that they can handle it, and they have to get the children safely home. When Benji asks Kayla about his father, she looks at Steve questioning what to tell the boy. They tell the boy that his father isn’t a nice man and he does bad things. Steve states that he has to go away to be punished. Kayla promises him that they love him and he can stay with them. He runs into their arms and hugs them tightly.
Outside, Steve overhears Gus and another sailor talking about taking care of them. He tells Kayla they can’t trust anyone, they have no way of knowing who is on his payroll. When a delivery guy arrives, Steve knocks him out and they sneak away using his truck. Soon they are on a plane headed home. Kayla worries that there is no one on the island to help everyone left on the island. Steve determines that once he gets them safely home, he will return to the island to help them.
Kayla doesn’t like that idea and begs him to promise her that he won’t return. He agrees that he won’t leave her. He says he will figure out how to help them once he gets home. Kayla says maybe by then they will have already have escaped. Steve encourages her to have faith, like she is always telling him. She just wants her family home together.
12/2 Steve and Kayla arrive home with Benji and Carrie. They shock Shawn and Caroline when they tell them that Stefano is alive. They worry when Benji is missing. They set out to search for him and find him alone on the docks. He tells them that he misses his father, even though he knows he is a bad man. Kayla signs to him that they want him to live with them and they all hug.
12/6 Marcus and Kayla talking on a park bench. They're talking about the welcome home party for Benjy and Carrie. Marcus gets paged and leaves as Jack arrives. He and Kayla exchange nasty words. He puts down her life with Benjy and Steve but she tells him he doesn't know what it's like to have friends and family. She tells him he deserves to be alone.
Over at the Community Center, the party is in full swing. We see Jack looking in the window at the festivities.
12/8 Glitchy episode. Roman and Kayla argue over whether Stefano has Diana. Roman’s plan is to entice Stefano to coming to Salem. This worries Kayla as she doesn’t want him near Benji or the rest of the family as he has been such a threat to all of them. Roman almost slips about if Stefano has Diana, then maybe he also has but cuts himself off before he says Marlena.
Kayla asks him to tell her what is going on? She can see how torn up he is. He shows her a picture of Diana and Marlena together. In shock, she questions “Marlena?” Roman says he doesn’t want to tell anyone and get their hopes up but says if she is alive, he will not stop until he finds her. Kayla asks what if she is alive? How will he choose between her and Diana?
Steve finds a mystery man huddled in the rain and stops to try to help him. The guy is freaked out and won’t let Steve look at him. Steve tries to suggest seeing a friend of his who is a doctor, but the man refuses. Steve offers to get him out of this bad weather. He promises not to tell anyone about him, and Steve will look out for him until he is better.
Steve takes him to his old place under Shenanigan’s. He won’t let Steve get close to him and hides under the stairs. Steve gently gets him to come out and tucks him into bed. Steve seems to understand what he is going through. Steve removes his eye patch and shows the man his scar.
He admits that only one other person has seen it. He tells him he got past it, and the man will too. Steve asks him if he will trust Steve to take care of him? Steve grabs his hand and gives it a reassuring squeeze. Steve leaves and stands outside in the rain with somber thoughts, memories in his head.
Kayla runs into April at Shenanigan’s and she tells Kayla she has lost her job at the hospital. Kayla offers her job at the community center back. April is surprised and asks her if she is sure given what she did? (She stole narcotics to ease her mother’s pain from cancer). Kayla understands why she did it and assures her that is in the past.
Steve joins Kayla at Shenanigan’s and apologizes for being late. She comments on him being wet and he snaps at her that she is supposed to love him for who he is and not for how he looks. She is distracted with the news she got from Roman. He tells her what Roman had to say about Stefano? She shares that Roman says this isn’t anything to do with Benji.
Steve doesn’t believe that for a moment. He asks why else would the maniac come to Salem? She responds, “Diana”. He observes that now he is using Diana to get to Benji. He firmly states that he sure hopes Roman isn’t keeping secrets like Shane was. She changes the subject and asks him what is wrong?
He tells her about the man he found on the side of the road, that looks like he has been burned really bad. Kayla offers to look at him. Steve says that would be good, but not yet. He is going to take him some food and is just getting him to trust him. Steve says he will get him to a doctor eventually but he is ready to bolt as soon as Steve mentions it.
Steve says he is scared but he doesn’t know of what. Kayla worries that the guy might be in some kinda of trouble and maybe he shouldn’t be hiding him. Steve is surprised. He asks what happened to the old Kayla who would take in strays no matter what anyone said. He says maybe she is rubbing off on him.

Kayla arrives and he tells him that this is his wife, Kayla, and she is a nurse who knows how to take care of those burns of his.
He starts throwing things as she comes in. She isn’t afraid and walks right up to him. She tries to touch him but he shakes her off and avoids her. She softly tells him that sometimes it is hard to admit to needing help, but she will come back when he is ready. She leaves ointment for his burns and tells him that is the best she can do without looking at them. Steve warns him if he keeps spitting on people who are trying to help him that they will stop trying.
Steve tries to get him to tell him his name, but he won’t talk to him. Steve tells him there is food and medicine. Steve knows where he is at, but one of these days he will admit that he needs help. Steve tells him that he is in bad shape and he needs it.

Kayla wants to know what happened. Carrie tells them that the kids in the park were making fun of him and threw rocks at him. Kayla thanks her for taking care of him and bringing him home. Steve is furious this happened to him.
After Benji is asleep, Steve sits in front of the fire upset as Kayla comforts him. Steve knows how Benji is feeling, and he goes back to that first time he looked in the mirror after losing his eye. It was like seeing some monster in a freak show. He gets tears in his eye. Steve could deal with it as he had to be tough with his childhood. He questions who will Benji handle this, he is just a little kid. Kayla assures him that he can handle it as he is with them.
Then Steve sadly asks about Mr. No Face, he doesn’t have anyone. She disagrees and points out that he has Steve, who has Kayla. He takes her in his arms and says that he still can’t believe that (that she is his). Steve shares that most people who see someone different from them, they don’t like it. She declares they are ignorant and afraid.
Steve says he has it a lot easier than the guy with the burned out face. Kayla disagrees that he didn’t have it easier, that it is his strength that got him through all the bad times and that is what made her fall in love with him. She tells him that she loves the way he looks, and she finds him and his patch very sexy as she gives him come hither eyes! He responds and pulls her into his arms to kiss her deeply.
12/15 Jack sees Steve bringing a Christmas tree to his old apartment (where the mystery man is hiding out). Jack gives Steve the third degree, very suspicious and noisy. Steve gives him a song and dance about donating the tree to the kids Christmas party at Shenanigans, but Jack doesn't really believe him, so he follows Steve to Shenanigans. Steve returns later bringing him a pizza.

12/20 Roman and Diana bring Benji home. Roman explains that he found the boy hiding in the back of his jeep. He thinks he wanted to see his father, but that he has put it together the kind of man his father really is. Steve and Kayla are sad to see how heart broken the boy is. Kayla determines to have a big family Christmas. Steve gets real quiet, as this will be his first Christmas with her as his family.
Jack goes back to Steve's old place, and breaks in. He calls out to Nik who doesn’t respond but instead knocks him out with a vase over the head. Steve finds Jack unconscious and figures out what happened. Steve tells Nik that Jack isn’t after him, he is after Steve. He hauls him out and waits for him to come to. When he does, Steve grabs him by the lapels and tells him to stay out of his business.
12/21 Lost couple of mins due to pre-emption. Steve dresses as Santa and goes to see the bandaged man (Nick). Nick gets a good laugh out of seeing "Patchy Clause".
Couple of minute pre-emption cuts into Patchy Claus recruiting Marcus to help him. Steve hands out presents on the docks, as Marcus is dressed as an elf. Steve recognises one of the children. The little boy, Timmy, says his brother is in the hospital and needs an operation but his mama doesn’t know how they are going to pay for it. Marcus donates his services, but the hospital bill will still have to be paid.
Back at his old place, Steve is obviously upset as he takes off his Santa outfit. Nik is interested in what is wrong and Steve tells him about the little boy who had been badly burned in a fire and family can’t afford the medical care. A frustrated Steve tells him he doesn’t know what he is going to do but he has to try to help this family. Later, Steve finds an envelope with money in it. Freaked out he heads out and runs into Marcus on the dock. He tells him abut her being ready to have a baby. He hustles pool for a living and doesn’t have anything, not even a decent car. He questions what does he have? Marcus points out that Steve has Kayla and he would happily trade him. Steve confides that he doesn’t have what a kid needs. Marcus reminds him the last time Steve talked like this, it was when he was worried about marrying Kayla and how did that work out?
Steve returns home to find Kayla dressed up and ready for New Year’s Eve. She acknowledges she might be pushing him into something before he is ready. He wants to just celebrate and enjoy tonight, how happy they are and how much he loves her, how lucky they are. He suggests that they skip Adrienne’s party. Kayla says that they promised to help Adrienne.
They arrive at the mansion, and Steve takes Justin out by wheelchair to meet Adrienne for a private party. Later Steve tells Kayla that maybe having a baby would make things better but he isn’t ready yet. She turns away, somber. He asks her if she is happy, really happy? She turns back to him and says yes, she has never been happier. They ring in the New Year kissing on the docks as the snow falls.
1/4 Steve is reading the paper at the loft when Kayla comes home loaded with shopping bags. He asks about Benjy and she tells him she dropped him off with his grandfather, Orion, so that she and Steve could have a special night. Kayla tells Steve that she was wrong about Orion. She goes upstairs to change and Steve snoops through the bags finding baby clothes and reels when he thinks she is pregnant. To make matters worse, Kayla is craving potato chips and blueberry bubblegum ice cream. He baits her to tell him but she says she has news for him that she'll share tonight at their special dinner she's making him.
He goes for a walk to the pier to think where he runs into Marcus. Marcus is making fun of Steve's coat. Sharing the news with his friend he tells Marcus he's not ready to be a father and is scared he'll be bad at it. Marcus diagnoses Steve as having "prenatal panic", and he tries to administer a cure. Marcus takes him to the hospital to hold a newborn, but Steve is still not convinced he'll make a good father.
As Kayla puts the finishing touches on her special dinner, Steve returns home to his pretty woman. Kayla dressed up for their special night and tells her he knows what her news is. He thinks she's being coy and finally admits he knows she is pregnant. Kayla laughs, telling him that's not her news and that she is not pregnant. She had wanted to tell him that after seeing Benjy with his grandfather she admits it is finally time to let him go and be with his family. Steve is proud of her for putting the child first, but she is concerned he doesn't want children. They agree to discuss it later and kiss.

Adrienne calls and he agrees to meet her at the Curtis stables at noon.
After he leaves, Kayla finds the job listings and goes to the Brady Fish Market to see Caroline who is busy bussing tables. They talk about how Shawn is overworked and how Steve feels he needs to prove himself before he's ready for a family. Caroline tells her you can never be truly ready, but if you want one it just happens. She hands her some home movie reels she had out, so she could show Steve that even a family with four children and loads of debt could still be happy.
Steve meets Adrienne at the stables and he finds a cut beam in the hay. He tells her that she may be right and the accident was planned just as Anjelica and Neil walk in. Steve goes to his interview. With a sparse resume Steve lands the job at Fast Freddie's Used Car Emporium when the boss hears him say he will do anything. Things look even better when Steve learns the job is as their new pitch man, but it is on late late-night television dressed as a pirate with a dog. He turns it down and heads home, bummed out. Kayla cheers him up telling him she loves him no matter what and he carries her over to the couch.
1/12 Kayla is back working at the Emergency Center when Emilio stops by. She encourages him to teach the dance class at the Community Center. He tries to get her to drop it, so she reminds him that when Harper Devereaux's men kidnapped her, he put is own life in danger to save her. It shows what kind of man he is and he reminds her of Steve deep down.
In the Curtis living room, there is a very different discussion going on as Anjelica rants to Steve why she believes Emilio tried to kill Justin. Neil is torn, but Steve believes in Emilio and asks for time to do some investigating himself before they call the police.
Steve comes by to warn Adrienne that Anjelica is out for Emilio so they decide to start with clearing him right away. Emilio comes at their request and the questioning is interrupted by Justin. He says he believes that Emilio is innocent, but if he's accused the affair between him and Adrienne will come out, so he'll take care of making this go away. Adrienne is impressed he'd do this for her.
At the Community Center, Kayla is looking Carrie who has developed a rash. Alice comes in and says they are having other kids from her school with the same rash over at the hospital. Alice and Kayla remark that they must look into this further.
Steve returns home to the loft with a pizza to find Kayla cooking dinner and open arms. He shares how bad he feels that she worked all day and then comes home to waiter on him. He feels inadequate compared to her, but will show her that he will make something of himself and make her proud of him.
Steve is called over to the Curtis mansion to talk about Emilio. Anjelica thinks that he's the one that called the accident. Meanwhile, Adrienne is trying to understand why Justin doesn't want the police to reopen the case. Steve and Anjelica swap pleasantries about whether or not Emilio did the crime. Later, Steve tells Adrienne that Emilio is under suspicion.
1/16 Steve has a hard time getting a job, and is frustrated when he calls back and they didn’t even have the courtesy to get back to him and slams down the phone as Kayla walks in on his phone call. Steve knows he didn’t get that last job as the guy didn’t like what he was wearing. Steve decides to change his image with a new wardrobe. Steve is at Saxton's, an upscale men's clothing store. He helps another customer and is offered a job. but as the help wanted sign comes down from the window, Jack is outside, wondering what's going on inside.
Steve goes home looking like one of the Blue's Brothers, with his new wardrobe, as he tells Kayla the news. Jack enters Saxtons and is greeted warmly by the proprietor. Jack chats and casually asks about the new hire. Yes, Steve has been hired. Jack suspects he'll be doing more shopping there in the future.
1/18 Kayla comes to The Spectator to see why the article on the mysterious rashes the high school kids are experiencing was not included in the day's edition. Jack walks in and says it is because he pulled it, and she looks at him in shock. He is Diana’s new partner.
Kayla questions what Jack is doing; she is irate. Jack is cool and civil as he informs Kayla that Diana now works for HIM. Diana returns and sees Kayla, and she breezes into her office to find Jack at work. More bickering. Diana makes more accusations toward him, but Jack is unruffled. She can't prove anything. Jack leaves and Kayla and Diana commiserate.
Over at Shenanigans, Steve is going through his mail before he heads to the new job. He gets a note from Nick, who they all presume is dead. Steve heads out for his first day at work.
1/23 Steve is working at Saxton's when Kayla comes in, disguised as a customer. She flirts with him and they banter back and forth until Steve chooses something that her special man, meaning Steve, might like. Steve's boss, Mr. Lyons, steps in when he disapproves of the choice, but Kayla reassures him this would be perfect for her man and that this salesman, Mr. Johnson, is the best one she's had. As Steve goes over to ring up the purchase, his boss warns him that her man better not return it, which Steve guarantees he won't.
While Steve and Kayla are at the counter, Jack comes in and asks Mr. Lyons for Steve's help. Kayla pulls her hat down and hopes Jack doesn't recognize her. Steve refuses to help him, but when his boss threatens him, he grudgingly goes over to assist Mr. Deveraux. Kayla lingers in the background while Jack naturally gives Steve a hard time, but Steve turns it around and says they will custom-make what he wants from scratch and pushes to set up a fitting time. His boss is most pleased with Steve's salesmanship.
Kayla meets up with Steve in front of Saxton's and they laugh at the con she pulled off earlier for his boss. He warns her that they'd better hope his boss doesn't want to meet his wife! They head home through the park and meet up with Jack who smugly tells Steve he won't be able to hold onto his job for long. Steve tells his brother that he is nasty and tells him not to bother him at his job anymore. Jack is unfazed; he doesn't think Steve will be there much longer anyway. Words fly and Jack leaves.
He leaves and Kayla is angered, but Steve insists that he just wants to keep this job and prove to them that he can do this. Steve assures Kayla that no matter what customers throw his way he's going to take it, to keep his job. He tells her he is going to the Cheatin' Heart to shoot some pool for a bit and they wander off in separate directions after a quick kiss.
1/25 Kayla checks on the reoccurring rash Carrie has. Steve hears Nick's brief message on the machine. Nick calls Steve back and asks him to meet with him. Nick talks to Steve about Eve's situation, and Steve tells him to resurface. Steve realizes Nick is in love with Eve.
1/27 Steve is five minutes late (again) to his new job at Saxtons, and his boss is less than pleased. Steve's day only gets worse as his first customer is none other than Jack. It's obvious that Jack has come there to taunt his brother, and he does a fine job of it, as Steve tries to hold his temper. Eventually it all breaks down, Steve tosses Jack out of the store and then quits and storms off. Steve has a customer at his new job, Jack! Steve throws Jack out of the store after taking all he can from him, then quits before he can be fired. Steve tells Marcus what happened and how he's going to pay back Jack.
Kayla and Alice tell Roman and Diana the rash Carrie had from school is because the water was contaminated, as Diana goes to work on a story for the paper on it.
1/30 Steve practices how he is going to tell Kayla about losing his job. Nick calls Steve for help after Eve is charged with First Degree murder in his death. Steve pressures Nick to resurface and gives Nick 48 hours to come forward, or he'll tell everyone he's alive.
Tom comes by the loft, worried as he can’t find Alice. He tells Steve that Alice and Kayla left to track down the source of the water contamination. Steve seems bothered when he checks and no messages from Kayla either. Kayla and Alice go snooping on the dump site and get arrested.
Abe is a bit surprised when Kayla and Alice are hauled into the PD for trespassing. They tell him the story and he is willing to let them be released if they promise not to go back there. Alice jumps in and declares they will do no such thing and want to be arrested. She wants to be booked, fingerprinted and for Abe to throw the book at them! Kayla is looking at her in disbelief.
Abe reminds Alice that they already have her mug shot from the last time she was arrested, when she helped Roman escape. Kayla looks at her in shock that she had previously been arrested. They are thrilled when two reporters arrive. They beg Abe to allow them to make a statement to the press before they are locked up in jail. Alice declares that someone is poisoning the children and makes quite a little speech.
Steve is shocked when Abe calls him to tell him that Kayla has been arrested. He rushes down to the PD, with Tom right behind him. They want to bail their ladies out of jail but the gals refuse. This is too important of an issue and they are getting the press coverage needed.
Later he visits her while she is in jail, and she puts on a brave front but she is obviously nervous. Steve is shaking his head that she is the person in jail.
1/31 Diana tells Roman she wants to find a way to help Kayla and Alice. Steve wants to know why Diana is letting Jack take control of her paper, and she admits that Jack conned her out of it. They are on to Jack and what he's all about, and they resolve to work together to bring him down.
2/2 Kayla is waiting across the mesh divider on the prisoner's side of the jail's visiting room when Steve comes in playing his harmonica. He asks her how long she has to stay in there and she tells him until the truth comes out about who is behind the water pollution. He tells her he's had the soil samples analyzed that she and Alice stole, and it turns out there's toxic waste being dumped on the vacant lot beside the school, which is contaminating their well. He has tracked down the owner of the property, which is a corporation, Salem Enterprises, but can't reach the board of directors.
He admits he is good at tracking down people, but not so good at sorting through all the paperwork he's gotten from the city records. She advises he bring in Diana for that and he agrees. She then switches topics and asks how her parents are doing with her being in jail and he admits they don't like it and want her out, despite the cause she's fighting for. Roman comes in and agrees. He shows the note to Steve and Kayla, but she affirms she's staying in until it is over, so Roman tells her it's over as Alice is brought in, confused as to why she's there. He reveals they are going to night court and will soon be out of jail.
Alice and Kayla stand before the judge in the courtroom on trespassing charges while Tom, Steve and Roman watch the proceedings. Alice insists she say a few words before sentencing, but the judge has already decided and pronounced a $200 fine each or they will be remanded into custody for 30 days if the fine is not paid. The men all look relieved that this is finally over, but Alice tells Tom to put his money away as she intends to take the 30 days, as does Kayla. The men argue with them, but the ladies make their case to stay, and Steve agrees.
Roman still thinks there's a better way to handle it, but supports Kayla's decision and tells her he'll break the news to their parents. Tom however is not satisfied and wants a better explanation from his wife. Alice tells him she's doing this for their children and grandchildren and points out there's been more written about pollution in Salem in the past short while than there's ever been. Kayla reassures him she'll take good care of his wife as he tells Alice he's proud of her, and the ladies are escorted back to their cells.
Steve shows up at Roman's house, with the papers from city records, to speak with Diana. She tells him that writing the story about Kayla being threatened and getting it printed are two different things as she's having partner problems. Steve deduces it's Jack and asks how that happened, which she explains she was tricked with a dummy corporation. They soon suspect that Jack is behind the company responsible for dumping the waste and Diana takes the papers from Steve to begin researching.
They find a corporate ID# in common between his papers and the ones from the sale of the Spectator. Now they just need to prove that its Jack that the number is registered to, and Diana has a friend in Washington that might be able to help. Steve leaves to go give Kayla the news.
Back at the jail's visiting room, Kayla is angry that it was likely Jack who sent her the threatening note, but not surprised. Steve tells her Jack would have gotten away with dumping the toxic waste had it not been for Kayla. He promises her she's getting out of prison tomorrow, and on her terms, no less. He tells her he's making special plans and when she gets out tomorrow to meet him at their place.
2/3 Steve visits Kayla in jail. He is determined to bring Jack down. She questions if he really wants to hurt Jack? They both know what awful things Jack has done, but he is Steve's brother. Steve says that doesn't matter, Jack has to pay for what he's done to the children. He wants Kayla to come home quickly as he misses her.
Steve and Kayla talk about whether he is going after Jack with a zeal because he is his brother. Diana and Steve are planning on going public about Jack's involvement if they can slip past Jack, that is. Diana comes to the office with Steve, and Jack is surprised to see his brother there. They threaten to expose Jack. Jack knows something is up as he threatened Rusty to spill the details.
Looks like he is two steps ahead and he holds a news conference after Diana exposes the truth. Jack declares that it was his company that was responsible for toxic dumping that caused the children's skin rashes. Diana and Steve watch in chagrin as Jack runs the show, admitting what has happened and putting his own spin on it and comes out looking like the hero.
Once again, Jack slides past disaster; the press leave with accolades for him. Diana angrily asks how he sleeps at night? Jack says they have their headline for the day: Jack Deveraux Saves Salem. The others are less than impressed. Steve has harsh words for Jack, but Jack isn't going to take it from his 'Bro.'
Later, Steve and Diana come out of the Brady's place, and Diana asks the same question, is Steve prepared to really bring down his brother. Steve wonders aloud if Jack really deserves a chance to redeem himself.
Caroline visits Kayla in prison. Later Steve visits her and fills her in on Jack’s press conference. Kayla points out the important thing is that the water will be cleaned up and the children won’t be sick. Steve will pay her bail so she can get out of jail.
While shopping for Diana's wedding dress, Caroline has a heart attack. Kayla gets out of prison but gets a phone call from Diana with the bad news and goes straight to the hospital.
2/6 At the hospital, Caroline lay in bed, hooked up to monitors while Kayla sits by her side. Steve comes in, concerned for his wife and asks her to take a short break. In the corridor she contemplates mortality and how she feels somewhat responsible for her mother's heart attack as she knew it was stressful on her parents while she was in jail. Shawn comes in asking how Caroline was doing, but they reveal there's been no change. Steve realizes there will be deliveries to the market and takes the keys to go help out.
Roman, Diana and Carrie arrive at Caroline's ICU room to find Kayla and Shawn sitting vigil. Kayla tells them she still hasn't woken up as she and Roman go into the corridor. He tells her to go home for a bit, but she refuses. Mike comes along and tells Roman, Kayla and Diana he has the test results and will go over them with all of them in his office.
When the family gets back to her room, Roman announces he has to go pick up the twins and advises the others to take a break and get some rest, but Shawn and Kayla insist on staying. Steve comes back from the market, and Shawn is grateful for all his help. Steve tells Shawn that he saw how much fish was at the closed store and was able to sell it for 5% over wholesale to another market. Shawn is grateful as Steve saved him a small fortune from all of that inventory going bad. He goes back to Caroline's bedside as the two go out into the corridor where Steve comforts his wife. Caroline is still in critical condition.
2/8 Kayla and Steve are with Shawn at the fish market as he's getting ready to leave for the hospital. Kayla says she's staying to run the market and receive deliveries instead of going to work at the Emergency Center. She can’t let the market go under, but Steve tells her to go and he will take care of the market. He convinces her and Shawn that he can run the store and keep it open.
