Steve & Kayla #28 August 11, 2008 - February 9, 2009: 7 hrs 45 mins
DVD #28A
8/11 At the hospital after an unconscious Marlena was brought in, Kayla and other medical personnel tended to her and told everyone that John had probably saved her life. A nurse told Kayla that the initial findings indicated some type of poison caused Marlena's condition. Kayla asked the nurse to have the contents of the syringe analyzed and report to her as soon as possible. John asked Kayla about Marlena's condition. She blasted John and called him a cold bastard. Kayla told John that she saw him in the back of the church and knew that he ruined Bo and Hope's wedding.

Kayla said that the John she knew would never have done such a cruel thing to people that were once his friends and family. John told Kayla that she would never understand how he felt, and to stop analyzing him and get back to her patients. John reminded Kayla that he had help in becoming the man standing before her. Kayla begged John to look inside himself and try to find the good man that she knew was still there. She urged him to break free because he was everyone's hero and she knew that he could still feel that part of himself. She told John that Marlena would always be the great love of his life and that eventually he would remember his love for her. Kayla seemed to hit a nerve and John sensed the need to visit Marlena. He stood at her beside and stared at her nearly lifeless body.

Outside Marlena's room, Anna asked Kayla about Marlena's condition and then asked about Bo and Hope. Kayla told Anna that she was not optimistic about Bo's case, but hoped that things would work out. Kayla thanked Anna for alerting John about Marlena and said that both Anna and John were responsible for saving Marlena's life.

812 At Salem Hospital, Sami watched over Marlena while Kayla tended to her. Kayla asked John and Sami to step outside and, as they left, Steve entered and asked about Marlena. When Kayla explained that Marlena was injected with a paralyzing toxin, Marlena muttered Stefano's name. Noting the expression on Steve's face, Marlena informed him that Stefano was awake. Kayla told Sami that Marlena was getting worse. Kayla suggested more tests, but Marlena interrupted to say that was a waste of time. Sami wondered if Rolf could help, and E.J. set out to track him down. Once E.J. had left the room, Marlena struggled to speak but was able to say that she knew what she had been injected with because it was "the same toxin I gave Stefano." As Sami's mouth hung open in shock, Marlena slowly listed the ingredients of the drug cocktail that she had used on Stefano.

In the hospital lab down the hall, Kayla worked feverishly to find an antidote to the drugs in Marlena's system. After checking her notes, Kayla exclaimed that she might have the answer. Kayla rushed back to Marlena and advised her that a mix of antitoxins might be able to reverse the paralysis. However, Kayla then explained that the mix of antitoxins could also make the situation worse. Steve stopped by with baby Joe, looking for Kayla. While Steve cooed over his son, the sound of a click at the door could be heard. Steve rushed over to check the door and found that it was locked. Then, the hissing sound of gas could be heard from across the room. Terrified for his son, Steve put Joe's carrier on the floor and then attempted to close the vents where the gas was escaping. Unable to stop the gas from entering the room, Steve frantically tried to open the door to escape.

Back in Marlena's room, Kayla asked her whether she wanted to go ahead with the possible antidote. Still struggling to speak, Marlena whispered that she trusted Kayla, but that she also had no choice. With the go-ahead to inject the experimental cocktail of drugs, Kayla picked up the syringe. No sooner had she done that when she began to cough. With a slight hissing noise coming from the corner, Kayla put the syringe back on the table and went over to investigate the sound coming from the vent while Marlena looked longingly at the syringe just out of her reach.

8/13 Kayla coughed from the purple vapors flowing out of the vents in Marlena's room. She strapped an oxygen mask on Marlena, vowed to return right away, and then dashed out the door to try to find out what was happening. Meanwhile locked in the hospital lab, Steve frantically rummaged through a cabinet while baby Joe cried in his infant seat. Steve used a clipboard to try to knock the pin out of the door hinges, and when that didn't work he tried the doorknob again, to no avail. He banged on the door and shouted to try to get someone's attention, then gave up and tried to open one of the other cabinets or drawers, but everything was locked. At last Steve found some oxygen for both him and his son, and got them both breathing from the tank.

When Kayla learned from nurse Susan that their floor was on lockdown and none of the phones or intercoms was working, she hurried off to find Steve and Joe. Kayla used her security code to open the lab door and immediately rushed over to check on Joe. Steve shouted for her to get the door as he raced across the room, but the door swung closed and they were once again locked in. As Kayla tended to Joe, she suddenly slumped to the floor. Steve held her and begged her to wake up. Steve finally managed to rouse Kayla and brought her a surgical mask to ease her coughing. Kayla was worried about Marlena, but Steve tried to reassure her that a nurse was taking care of Kayla's patients. He then began to search for something with which to cover the vents.

Steve, his mouth and nose covered by a bandanna, taped something over the vents and returned to where Kayla gently rocked Joe. Unsteadily, she told him she felt dizzy again and slumped in his arms, but then she rallied. Gasping for breath, she noted that the oxygen tank wouldn't last forever. Steve collapsed behind her, sending a metal tray clattering to the floor. Kayla crawled over to check on him, then she scrambled to the door to call weakly for help.

8/15 Kayla passed out from the vapors as Steve did his best to get them out of the locked room. Steve had no luck and eventually passed out as well. Stefano entered and saw the baby sleeping soundly nearby. The baby was wearing an oxygen mask. Later, when Steve and Kayla woke up, they discovered baby Joe was gone!

8/20 Stefano held baby Joe as a hurried Rolf entered. Stefano handed him the baby. Later, Rolf returned to Stefano and informed him that everything was taken care of. Stefano told Rolf their plan was almost complete.

8/21 Kayla was distraught thinking no one was alive to save them, and Steve tried to calm her. They heard Joe's cries and banged on the door again. Steve tried to break the handle on the lab door. Lucas heard Steve trying to get out, and he tried to key in the code Kayla gave him. Once they were free, Kayla and Steve ran off to find Joe.

On the seventh floor, Chloe, Lucas, Kayla, and Steve heard banging noises coming from the stairwell, and Chloe and Lucas went to investigate. Kayla and Steve heard Joe's voice coming from the linen closet and found the baby in a basket of clothes. Kayla and Steve were relieved to find their baby, but they noticed a mark on Joe's wrist and assumed it was a just a freckle.

Abe, Roman, and a police officer went into Stefano's hospital room but did not find him. They looked up and saw Stefano on the monitor on the wall. Roman ordered the cops to round up the rest of the patients and guests from the seventh floor and take them downstairs. Stefano taunted them, saying he was able to get away before he was affected by the gas, which was nontoxic and would have no lasting effects. Stefano asked Roman and Abe to arrest Marlena for assault and attempted murder for injecting Stefano with toxins. If Marlena were not brought to justice for what she did to Stefano, Stefano would punish her, he said.

8/22 Stefano returned to his mansion and told Rolf he needed to go underground. Rolf was going with him. Stefano vowed to raise a new generation of DiMeras that would be invincible. Steve and Kayla were being questioned about what happened on the seventh floor during the lockdown. Joe was being examined by a pediatrician after his ordeal with Stefano. Joe was given a clean bill of health. Steve told Roman that Stefano took their baby. Kayla wanted to know why.

8/26 Steve told Caroline about his decision to open a private investigation business. It was his way of finding something to do to keep from going crazy, he said. Steve had already been doing some freelance work for the Salem Police Department. Trent went to Steve to hire him to find Nick, claiming that Trent was unable to reach Nick and was troubled by his sudden disappearance. Steve agreed to take the job. Trent told Steve that his friend Scott mentioned that Steve had a daughter named Stephanie. Trent tried to sound casual about his mention of Stephanie, but Steve's suspected something was up.

Trent tried to pump Steve for information about Stephanie and Max, and Steve said he disliked Stephanie and Max's relationship. Trent asked if Stephanie would know Nick's whereabouts, and Steve said he would question Stephanie about it when he talked to her. After Trent left, Caroline asked Steve about their conversation. Steve told Caroline he thought Trent was digging for information on Max. Caroline told Steve that Max was in France looking for his sister. Steve said he knew what Max was doing and played along with Trent by agreeing to take the case to keep an eye on him.

Stephanie called Steve and said she got word from her sorority sisters about the hospital lockdown. Steve said they were okay, but he filled her in on Trent's attempts to find Max and Stephanie. Steve told Stephanie that Trent knew Nick was with her and Max. Steve told Stephanie that he would go get her, but Stephanie was more concerned with what was going on with Max and Tiffany. Stephanie told Steve not to come to France, because she was taking the next flight home.

9/4 Lexie told Kayla that Lexie could leave her job over Stefano locking down the 7th floor and releasing gas into vents in the hospital, but Lexie said she would give up her job if it meant Theo would be normal. Lexie said she and Abe dreamed that Theo would one day have a career, wife, and kids some day. Kayla said that could still happen, but Lexie needed to lower her expectations. Lexie wondered if Theo would be able to make his own meals, drive a car, or still be living at home when he turned 30. Kayla said if Lexie and Abe showed Theo that they were happy, Theo would be happy.

Abe and Steve bonded over being fathers, and Steve said that things would get easier when their sons got older and they could start taking care of themselves. Steve realized what he'd said and apologized. Abe said he didn't want anyone tiptoeing around his feelings. Abe said Lexie was desperate to have Theo show affection, but that would never happen.

Kayla saw Marlena at the Brady Pub, and Marlena said she was glad to see Kayla up and about. Steve told Kayla it was hard to imagine what Lexie and Abe were going through with Theo's autism. Steve said he didn't think Lexie was handling it well, but Kayla felt confident that Lexie would come around.

9/9 Inside the Brady Pub, Steve called Kayla to update her on baby Joe's recent check up. Pleased with the good news, Kayla thanked Steve for starting up his private investigation firm so that she could spend more time at home than at the hospital. Steve told Kayla how worried he was about Trent's interest in Max and Stephanie, but Kayla told Steve that there was nothing Trent could do to stop Max from meeting his sister, so Trent would have to back off. After hanging up the phone, an uncomfortable Steve called Stephanie's phone and left her a voice message, asking her to call home.

While Steve studied his files at a table in the pub, Hope stopped in with the information from the background check she ran on Trent. Though the background check included no scandalous information, it did show that Trent appeared to be married. While Hope and Steve discussed who Trent's wife might be, a stunned Nicole walked by and overheard their conversation. As Nicole watched Steve and Hope from the bar, she overheard Steve say, "If we find out who his wife is, maybe it'll explain why he's so hell-bent on keeping Max from his sister." Curious, Hope asked Steve why he was investigating his own client, and Steve informed her that Trent's interest in Max and Stephanie made him uncomfortable. As Steve and Hope agreed that Trent's wife could be the key to finding out Trent's secrets, Bo joined them and agreed that something about Trent seemed suspicious.

At Salem Hospital, Kate asked Kayla to check on her cough. After a brief exam, Kayla ordered more tests, but an impatient Kate told Kayla that she did not have time to wait around for more tests. As Kate walked away, Daniel entered the waiting room and asked Kayla why Kate was in the trauma center. Kayla gave Kate's file to Daniel and told him to figure it out.

9/16 At Salem Hospital, Hope and Kayla drank coffee and discussed their husbands' mutual obsession with putting Stefano behind bars. Kayla confided in Hope that she was worried that Steve would take matters into his own hands, and Hope promised to keep an eye on Steve. As the two chatted, Marlena walked by and greeted them. Kayla invited Marlena to join them on their night out, and once Marlena accepted, Kayla headed off to change. Hope asked Marlena how she was feeling, and then asked Marlena if she knew why Stefano had targeted her. Taking a deep breath, Marlena said that Stefano's attack was payback for what she had done to him. Before Marlena could explain, Kayla returned. Noting the awkward silence, Kayla looked at Marlena, who repeated Hope's question. Kayla nervously looked down, and Hope realized that Kayla already knew the answer to the question. Marlena explained, "Because I was responsible for his coma." After telling Hope how she had injected Stefano, Hope thanked her for her honesty. Marlena admitted she was not proud of what she had done, but said that she would do it again to protect her family.

9/19 In the pub, Max rushed in and punched Trent in the face. He yelled at Trent about how Claude nearly raped Melanie. Before Trent could defend his actions, Melanie entered calling Trent a liar and slapped him in the face. Melanie went off on Trent about how he used her. Trent ended up insulting Max, who lost it. He broke a bottle and brought it close to Trent's neck. Steve and Kayla tried to talk Max down after he threatened to kill his father. Caroline stepped up and reminded Max of the father who raised him. She told him Shawn was watching, and told him not to do it. Max lowered the bottle and Trent told Bo and Hope he wanted his son arrested for attempted murder. Nick told Trent if he pressed charges against Max, Nick would tell everyone at the university what Trent did to his daughter. Bo laid into Max for getting violent. Max said he was trying to protect his family. Melanie stepped up and told Trent she hated him and she should kill him herself because he deserved to die!

9/22 Bo, Hope, Steve, and Kayla tried to restrain Max and calm him down. They questioned him about his behavior and violent outburst against Trent. Bo and Steve encouraged Max to apologize to Trent, but Max was still very angry and upset. He said that he was sorry that he didn't kill Trent. Max tried to explain to everyone that Trent was a horrible father and deserved to die.

Inside the pub, Steve, Kayla and Melanie talked about what happened in France. Stephanie said that they were doing fine until Melanie's near rape and then Nick getting shot trying to rescue her. Stephanie told her parents that she was worried about Max, but Steve assured her that he and Bo would watch out for him. Stephanie said that she felt bad about what happened to Melanie, but that she was a real piece of work and was headed for trouble. However, she knew that Max would not give up on helping his sister. Steve and Kayla suggested to Stephanie that maybe she should take Max out of town before Max had another confrontation with Trent.

9/24 Kayla greeted Marlena, who was shuffling some patient files at the hospital. Observing that Marlena seemed distracted, Kayla offered to listen if Marlena needed to talk. Marlena confessed that she felt helpless because John was spiraling out of control and she couldn't do anything about it. Kayla tried to comfort her friend, but Marlena tearfully declared that she couldn't waste any more energy on John if he was only going to push her away. After Marlena thanked Kayla and returned to her office, Kayla overheard Daniel loudly dressing down a nurse. When the nurse left in tears, Kayla tried to get Daniel to calm down, but he barked at her, too. A paramedic brought a passed out John into the trauma center and filled Kayla in on his condition. John reluctantly agreed to stick around for some tests only after Kayla pointed out that he could have a stroke instead of a seizure next time.

Kayla gasped with alarm when she viewed John's scan results. A bit later, she showed them to a stunned Marlena, who concurred when Kayla said she'd never seen anything like them. Indicating the midbrain region, Kayla noted, "It looks like it's completely clouded over." Kayla added that she planned to run more tests, so Marlena left. Kayla stopped John as he was getting dressed to leave and tried to insist he stay for more testing. When she refused to speculate about what could be wrong with him until she knew more, and in spite of Anna's pleas, John put his coat on and left. Kayla sighed. "Poor Marlena. She's already suffered enough." Anna anxiously asked how bad the initial test results had been. "He could be heading for disaster," Kayla replied sadly.

9/26 At Chez Rouge, Hope and Bo greeted Maggie at the bar, and Hope informed Maggie that she had turned down the job of Police Commissioner. While Maggie attempted to pep talk Hope into changing her mind, Steve and Kayla arrived for their dinner with Bo and Hope, and they agreed with Maggie. Hope explained that although she really wanted to take the job, she felt that it would mean spending too much time away from Ciara. When Steve suggested to Bo that he should go after the job, a beaming Bo announced that he had already accepted the position. The two couples headed to their table to celebrate, and Bo explained that his main focus in taking on the job was to keep an eye on the new mayor and his connection with Stefano Dimera.

Right on cue, the new mayor stopped by the table and warned Bo that he was still just a candidate for the position. After the mayor left, a self-conscious Bo fretted that his recent evidence tampering might keep him from becoming the new commissioner. Ever the cheerleader, Kayla passionately spoke encouraging words to her brother and urged him to stay confident about the job.

In the cemetery, Caroline visited the grave of Shawn Sr. Caroline talked aloud to Shawn Sr.'s grave stating how angry she was to know that Trent was Max's biological father. "That's why I took care of him tonight. You don't have to worry about Trent Robbins bothering Max anymore," said Caroline. While Caroline attempted to confess to her husband, Trent watched her from the bushes and stumbled over to her. Shocked to see Trent headed toward her, Caroline screamed aloud just as a bloody Trent fell on top of her. Noting with horror the knife sticking out of Trent's back, Caroline pulled the knife out and stared at it. Alerted by Caroline's screaming, Bo, Hope, and the two officers headed into the cemetery and found Caroline next to the body of Trent Robbins, the knife still in her hand.

9/29 Caroline was sitting beside Shawn's grave, and became frightened when she saw a figure staggering toward her from the bushes. She screamed and realized that it was Trent. He continued toward her and then fell on top of her. She seemed to be in shock and noticed that someone had stabbed Trent in the back with a large knife. Instinctively, she pulled out the knife and sat there motionless. Nearby, Bo, Hope, and a few police officers heard the screams and found Caroline kneeling over Trent's body with the bloody knife in her hands. Bo and Hope were stunned to find Caroline in such a precarious situation. Bo asked Caroline if she was okay and what happened.

Caroline was so upset, she could barely speak, and then Bo asked Caroline to put the knife down. Hope rushed over and advised Bo to do everything by the book. She advised Caroline not to say a word without an attorney present. Bo was visibly shaken, but asked Hope to call Mickey, and then instructed Officer Lopez to read Caroline her rights. Caroline tried to explain to Bo what happened, but Bo discouraged her from discussing the matter, and asked Officer Lopez to take his mother to the station.

Mickey received a phone call from Hope, who explained that Caroline had been arrested for the murder of Trent Robbins and that she needed his help. Maggie, Mickey, Doug, and Julie were shocked to hear the news, and decided to join Mickey at the police station to support Caroline. Maggie reminded everyone that Trent was Melanie's father and that someone should tell her what happened. Mickey went over to Nick and Melanie's table and informed Melanie that Trent was dead.

At the police station, Roman was called in on a new murder case unaware that Trent was murdered and Caroline was the prime suspect. When Bo arrived with Caroline, Roman could not believe that his mother was arrested for Trent's murder. Bo explained the facts to Roman, who insisted that their mother could not have murdered Trent in cold blood. Caroline told Bo and Roman that she did not kill Trent, and that she was scared. They assured her that everything would work out. Mickey, Maggie, Doug, and Julie arrived at the police station. Mickey told Bo and Roman that he wanted to speak to Caroline alone.

Outside the office, Doug asked Bo what happened, and he explained everything, but told him that there was circumstantial evidence present, and that he did not have a choice. Bo emphasized how important it was that he and Roman do everything by the book. Roman and Bo were anxious and upset that they could not be in the office with Caroline while Mickey questioned her. Maggie offered to stay with Caroline, and Bo and Roman agreed. Doug and Julie were upset at the thought that anyone could think that Caroline could murder anyone. Bo asked Melanie to identify Trent's body. She agreed, but asked Bo to give her a few minutes to compose herself. Mickey told Roman that he knew that Caroline did not stab and kill Trent. Roman agreed but said that he had no choice and would probably have to place Caroline in jail for the night. Roman hoped that forensics would find other fingerprints on the knife, but that it would be up to the District Attorney to make the final call. Shortly after, the District Attorney ordered Roman to place Caroline in lockup.

Back at the cemetery, Hope called in Steve to assist with the investigation into Trent's background. Steve agreed to assist in order to help Caroline and prove that someone else wanted Trent dead. Hope and Steve discussed Nicole's marriage to Trent and the fact that she was very upset that he caused her to lose her divorce settlement from Victor. Hope told Steve that the preliminary reports indicated that Trent had several encounters that night, and that it appeared that more than one person might be responsible for his death. As Hope described Trent's wounds, several Salem residents were on their way to becoming suspects in Trent's murder. Nicole, Max, Melanie, and Nick all seemed to be hiding secrets about where they were the night of Trent's murder. Hope walked over to Shawn's grave and prayed for him to help Caroline. Hope left the cemetery and Steve walked over to Trent's body. Steve looked down at Trent and felt that there were people who were probably very happy that Trent was no longer part of their lives.

Back at the police station, Roman led Caroline to a jail cell and locked the door behind her. Caroline was left alone with her thoughts.

9/30 At the Brady Pub, Hope rushed in to meet with Chelsea who was already sitting at a table struggling with her school registration paperwork. Chelsea launched into a complaint about how she was stuck in a class with Trent Robbins as her professor, prompting Hope's face to fall in discomfort. Reading Hope's awkward facial expression, Chelsea asked Hope to tell her what was wrong. Hope informed Chelsea about Trent's murder and Caroline's arrest, but asked Chelsea not to go down to the police station yet. Chelsea reluctantly agreed and suggested to Hope that she take note of Melanie as a suspect in the murder. Hope then asked Chelsea about her social life, and when Chelsea mentioned that she deserved the Daniel mess for how she ended things with Nick, a curious Hope wondered aloud whether Chelsea still had feelings for Nick. Chelsea denied that she did, and immediately informed Hope that Nick had moved on to someone else.

At the hospital, Lexie visited Kayla. A nervous Kayla told Lexie that Kayla was the new interim chief of staff. A jubilant Lexie congratulated her and took her out for coffee to discuss the job. Lexie also discussed how happy she was that she had decided to cut back on her workload and spend more time with Theo.

Down at the police station, Bo worried about Caroline's emotional frailty and discussed the facts of the case with Roman and Steve. According to the reports, the suspect was found at 9:15 PM in the cemetery and was covered in a multitude of injuries other than his stab wound. Steve played devil's advocate and suggested the other injuries could support a claim of self-defense by Caroline, but Bo and Roman both shot down the idea since Caroline would have already mentioned such a claim.

Abe walked in during the discussion and offered his support. Unfortunately, May or Marino walked in, as well, and expressed his concern over the conflict of interest in the case. Abe assured the mayor that the best men were already assigned to the case, and the mayor agreed to leave Bo and Roman in charge, but he also warned them that internal affairs would be watching them closely.

Roman had to hold back an angry Bo, who screamed, "What's your problem?"
"I don't like the Brady attitude," Mayor Marino responded.

As Abe left the commissioner's office, May or Marino stopped him and offered him a freelance job keeping an eye on Bo and Roman. Shaking his head in disbelief, Abe said, "Unlike you I can't be bought."

Lexi introduced Scott, one of the members of the board of directors, to Abe. When Lexie went to pick up Theo, Scott asked Abe to run for the office of mayor against Marino.

Back in the commissioner's office, Bo, Roman, and Steve discussed the mayor's interest in the Robbins case and then began to list the possible suspects for the murder. Though Max was named, Steve adamantly argued that Max was unlikely, since he would not let his mother take the fall for a crime he committed. Nick was also listed as a suspect, but no one felt he was capable of stabbing someone. Bo theorized that Trent was blackmailing Nicole over their marriage, which surprised Roman who was still out of the loop on that information.

In the middle of the discussion, Hope walked in and added Melanie's name to the suspect list. When Stephanie stopped by, Bo asked her whether Melanie was capable of killing Trent. Before Stephanie could answer, Melanie marched into the room saying, "Why don't you just ask me yourself?" Melanie was stunned to have her comment greeted with silence. Unnerved by the mood in the room, Melanie announced that after coming to Salem for a fresh start, she was officially ready to leave town. Stepping in front of the door, Bo warned her that as a suspect in a murder, she was not allowed to leave town.

10/1 Victor showed up at the police station and demanded to see Caroline. Kayla arrived to hear him trying to get his way by throwing his weight around. Kayla angrily told Victor that Caroline did not need his kind of help, not when the District Attorney seemed dead set on prosecuting her for Trent's murder. Victor, offended, swore he would never intentionally hurt Caroline.

Kayla was worried because Victor always had a way of getting to Caroline. Steve reassured her that Caroline would never be charged, confiding that both Melanie and Nicole were high on the cops' list of suspects in Trent's murder. Though Kayla was stunned to learn that Nicole and Trent had been married, she immediately realized that it gave Nicole motive to murder him. Kayla fretted to Bo that Victor was trying to get closer to Caroline by coming to her rescue, but Bo dismissed her concerns, reminding her how strong their mother had always been. He was also sure it was only a matter of time before they found the evidence that would free Caroline.

Bo soon learned that, because no other fingerprints were found on the knife, the D.A. planned to charge Caroline with Trent's murder. Victor returned to the squad room just in time to overhear Bo tell this to Kayla, but did not make his presence known. Kayla and Bo broke the news to Caroline, who was stunned into silence at the knowledge she'd have to stand trial for murder.

10/2 Kayla updated Max on what was going on with Caroline, and Max admitted he was worried about Caroline and he couldn't believe his father was causing problems even after his death. Kayla asked Max how his sister, Melanie, was handling Trent's death, and Max said he didn't care because Melanie accused Max of killing their father. Kayla said Melanie was probably just in shock, but Max said Melanie hated Trent along with everyone else after Trent tried to pimp Melanie. Kayla thought Max and Melanie got along, but Max said he and Melanie were complete opposites. Kayla said that didn't mean Max and Melanie couldn't have been close. Max assumed he and Melanie would have bonded immediately, but all Melanie cared about was herself, he said, and Melanie was a stranger who meant nothing to him.

10/6 At the hospital, Marlena bumped into Kayla, who overhead Marlena talking to Mickey about her divorce papers. Kayla asked Marlena if she was going to divorce John even if his life was at risk. Marlena asked Kayla if she was trying to guilt her into saving her marriage, and told Kayla that she could no longer be married to John. Kayla tried to explain to Marlena how her own relationship with Steve finally returned to normal after Steve endured long-term brainwashing sessions at Stefano's hand. She told Marlena to try to wait it out and thought that she was making a mistake to divorce John.

Marlena said divorce was the only alternative, not because she wanted it, but because it was the only way. She said that she didn't have to be married to John in order to help him. She told Kayla that she would talk to John about his condition and urge him to get medical help. Kayla suggested that Marlena personally hand him the divorce papers. Marlena asked Kayla why she had a change of heart. Kayla told Marlena that she could use the divorce issue to force John to get medical attention so he could please Marlena. Marlena disagreed and refused to use the divorce papers as leverage against John.

10/14 Bo chitchatted with Kayla until he noticed a grim-faced Nicole and E.J. walking down the hallway. Bo walked over and asked Nicole if she had any information on Trent's murder, but Nicole claimed she had no information to tell. After Bo headed back to the station, Kayla sent Nicole into the exam room to prepare for her ultrasound while E.J. reminded Kayla that they needed to do a paternity test, as well. E.J. excused himself to take a call on his cell phone, and Kayla went in and asked Nicole, "Does Stefano know about this baby?"

No S&K 10/17 - 11/12

11/13 Kayla runs into Max, and he apologized to Kayla for the way he treated her and the rest of the family. He realizes that she knows he and Stephanie broke up. Kayla said she was glad Max went to France to find his sister. He declares it is time for him to move on with his life.

Later, Nick showed up to get a refill on his pain prescription. He complained to his doctor that his nurse wouldn’t refill the prescription. Doc says he needs another exam and he resists refilling his pain meds. When the doc is called to an emergency, he agrees to give him half but warns him that is it until he exams him again. He tried to rush off when he ran into Kayla. Kayla expressed her concern about the pain meds told him that the drug might be addictive and warned him to be careful. Kayla asks if Nick is okay as Stephanie says she hasn’t seen much of him. He assures her that he is fine, it is everyone else who is different.

Next, Lexie ran into Kayla and Joe at the Brady Pub. Lexie confided in Kayla about how Theo had a meltdown at the park and Lexie wasn't able to calm him down, but Chelsea was. Lexie said she felt like Theo would rather be with anyone but her, and she thought it was because Theo sensed that she was anxious because she felt guilty that Theo had autism. Kayla told her it wasn't her fault, and Lexie said she knew that in her head, but emotionally, Lexie felt like there was something she could have done to prevent it, and she felt like a bad mother. Kayla said she refused to let Lexie beat herself up over Theo's autism. Kayla said there were times when every mother failed at being patient. Lexie said she couldn't picture Kayla ever failing, but Kayla told Lexie about the time Stephanie was colicky as a baby and Kayla couldn't comfort her, so she lost her patience and cried.

She said the only person who could comfort Stephanie at the time was Kayla's mother, and even though Kayla was grateful, she felt inept. Kayla said she eventually accepted that she might not be able to comfort Stephanie always in the way Stephanie needed, but Stephanie knew that her happiness was the most important thing to Kayla. Kayla said Theo knew Lexie loved him, and he always would. Kayla said Theo was lucky to have Lexie as his mother, and Lexie said as much as she got frustrated, there were times when Theo would look into her eyes, and her heart would melt because she felt his love, and she knew he felt hers.

No SK 11/14 - 11/20

11/21 Steve met up with John in an alley, where John handed him an envelope. Steve stated that he was about to confer with someone who could supposedly identify the mayor's killer. John hoped Steve's source could do so soon, before the assassin struck again.

Kayla found Steve doing research on his laptop at the Brady Pub, and, after greeting him with a kiss, asked what he was working on. Steve closed his laptop and reminded his wife that he couldn't discuss his private investigation cases with her. When he saw how concerned she was, he reluctantly confided that John had hired him to help find Mayor Marino's killer. Kayla flipped out, concerned and a little peeved that he was putting himself in too much danger. Steve tried to reassure her, reminding her that Sami could come home once the killer was caught, but Kayla just got angrier. She argued that working with John was a bad idea, because he'd once been brainwashed to be Stefano's hired killer, and his behavior was too unpredictable. Steve assured her that John's heart was in the right place, because he was just trying to help Sami and Marlena.

Kayla softened, confessing that because she'd lost Steve years before, sometimes she overreacted when she thought he was in danger. Steve dragged his chair next to hers and put his arm around her. She stroked his beard and apologized for worrying, then reassured him that he had her support. He promised to call the police for backup when he found the killer, and the two shared a tender kiss. Kayla then asked if he'd show her what he'd been working on, so Steve opened the laptop back up, and surreptitiously pulled out the police sketch of the suspect. Whispering, he showed her a database on the computer, where he said he hoped to find a picture that matched the drawing of the killer.

12/3 Marlena bumped into Kayla, who was with baby Joe at the Brady Pub, and asked if Kayla had seen John. Kayla said she hadn't, but when she noted how distracted Marlena seemed, she asked what was going on. Marlena confided that John had agreed to meet with her old college professor for therapy. Kayla thought that was good news, and Marlena concurred. Marlena admitted that she'd found John's recent behavior troubling, but added that if anyone could help John, it was Dr. Taylor.

Steve arrived at the park just then, and privately told John there were no new leads about the mayor's killer. John urged him to keep looking, because he'd promised Marlena to find the assassin so that Sami would no longer be a target.

Steve joined Kayla at the pub, and told her how he'd just informed John about the lack of leads in the mayor's murder. When he saw Marlena returning, he quietly urged Kayla not to mention it to her. Joe began to cry, so Kayla whisked him off to change his diaper, and Marlena and Steve caught up. Steve expressed his sympathy about John and Marlena's divorce, but she declared that perhaps it had motivated John to get the help he needed. Kayla returned with the stroller and found Steve alone, watching a game at the bar. They kissed, and Steve suggested they leave for a romantic, sexy evening at home, complete with candlelight and Barry White. Kayla giggled and kissed her husband happily in reply.

12/4 Stephanie met Kayla and Steve in the park and gave them coffee, but she spilled the coffee and lost her temper. She told her parents about Kate and how worried she was for Philip.

12/11 Kayla stopped by Titan Enterprises to see Stephanie and give her the wallet she forgot, and Kayla put Stephanie's wallet on Melanie's desk. Melanie was tempted to steal it, but changed her mind. Philip asked Kayla for advice on whether he should fly his sister Billie in to be with Kate. Before she left to get coffee with Stephanie, Kayla reminded Stephanie not to forget her wallet. Philip overheard Melanie trashing Stephanie to another employee, Sasha, and he scolded her. Melanie brought up the lunches, and she was struggling to keep up with the workload. Stephanie told Melanie she was going into the vault to find the documents for Nick's project. Melanie pretended to walk off, then locked Stephanie inside the vault.

Kayla asked Marlena if she wouldn't mind sharing her waiting room with Dr. Taylor, and Marlena explained she already knew about the arrangement, because Dr. Taylor already moved in. Marlena told Kayla how John was receiving treatment from Dr. Taylor, and Kayla sensed that Marlena might be jealous of Dr. Taylor. Marlena denied being jealous, and Kayla pointed out that Marlena and John weren't a couple anymore. Marlena thought it was demeaning that John tried too hard to be nice to women. Kayla asked if she wished she were helping John instead of Dr. Taylor. Marlena admitted she was jealous that she wasn't helping him.

Kayla reminded Marlena that she got what she wanted, because John was getting help. Kayla asked her if she would want him talking to everyone about his therapy if she were John's doctor. Marlena said she wouldn't want that, but she still loved him, and seeing Kayla with Steve gave her hope that she and John might find their way back to each other. Kayla told her not to give up on that hope. Marlena worried about what to do if John's problem couldn't be treated with therapy. Kayla asked her if she disliked Dr. Taylor, but Marlena realized she was probably just jealous that Dr. Taylor was helping John and not Marlena.

12/25 At the Brady Pub, Steve asked Stephanie why she seemed to be going through the motions, and Max overheard and said it was because Philip wasn't there. Steve and Kayla stopped by the hospital and berated Stefano for showing up at the hospital's Christmas celebration. Steve threatened to throw Stefano out if he didn't leave on his own.

Julie told Stefano that on behalf of the hospital board, his charity was not welcome at the hospital. Stefano told her that he was a stockholder at the hospital, but he decided not to pull rank on her. Doug told Stefano to leave, because no one wanted him there. The kids walked in to hear the Christmas story. Doug, who was dressed as Santa, read to the children about the birth of Jesus. Philip, Chelsea, and Stephanie stopped by the hospital, and Philip donated money to the hospital. He walked over to Stephanie and kissed her on the cheek.

1/16/09 Kayla ran into Marlena at the hospital, where she noted that Marlena seemed lost in thought. When Kayla asked what was wrong, Marlena confided that she didn't quite trust Dr. Taylor, hastily adding that she couldn't be sure her concerns were legitimate. As the acting chief of staff, Kayla urged Marlena to divulge what was troubling her. Marlena revealed that, after only one hypnotherapy session, Charlotte had stated unequivocally that John would never get his memory back.

Kayla thought that sounded defeatist, or at least unorthodox, and Marlena agreed that hypnotherapy was normally a time consuming process. Marlena believed that she'd seen some progress in John after the hypnosis, and thought he might be on the verge of a breakthrough-but Charlotte had refused to return her phone messages. She told Kayla about how she'd checked into Charlotte's background, and Kayla concurred that Dr. Taylor's reaction-and the whole story seemed suspicious. She urged Marlena to confront Charlotte face-to-face.

Marlena blurted that John had discussed his hypnotherapy with her. She demanded to know why Charlotte would tell John that he would never get his memory back. Charlotte indignantly declared that John knew better than to discuss his case with Marlena.

As the doctors' voices grew louder, Kayla entered and asked what was going on. Charlotte hotly declared that she was going to report Marlena to the psychiatric board, since she obviously couldn't remain professional where John was concerned. When Kayla gently suggested that Charlotte calm down, an enraged Charlotte announced that she should get a restraining order against Dr. Evans. Kayla, fed up, ordered both women to accompany her to her office. Charlotte shot Marlena a petulant glare, but followed obediently.

The instant Brady heard the outer door close, he dashed from Charlotte's office into Marlena's. Before the three doctors had reached Kayla's office, Charlotte apologized for overreacting. She quickly explained that she didn't like feeling like her patients' privacy had been violated, then turned and strode back to her office, leaving Kayla and Marlena a little dumbfounded.

Kayla found John at the Brady Pub a short while later, and told him that she'd just seen his therapist. "Her behavior concerns me," Kayla continued. "I don't trust her, John-and neither should you."

1/19 Kayla warned John not to trust Charlotte based on a gut feeling that Kayla had. Kayla told John that Charlotte's behavior toward Marlena was inappropriate and that Kayla was afraid that Charlotte was going to hit Marlena. Kayla had doubts about Charlotte's mental state. John thought Kayla was saying that Charlotte was going nuts, but Kayla said that wasn't what she meant. She advised John to confront Charlotte.

1/22 Kayla told Marlena that John seemed to have had a stroke, and Marlena filled her in on John's hypnosis session. Kayla found it helpful, because stroke victims could recover sooner if they could focus on their memories. Brady said he showed John the tape of his hypnosis and when the part came up where John remembered seeing Marlena, John squeezed Brady's hand and said something about seeing light. Marlena panicked and ran into John's hospital room. She begged him to remember her and flashed back to when they first dated. She asked John if he remembered, and he blinked his eyes. After Marlena told him more about their life together, John went into seizure. Kayla was able to stabilize John, and Marlena asked Brady and Kayla to leave her alone with John. Marlena kissed John's lips, and John remembered their life together.

1/23 Kayla came into John’s hospital room, and Marlena wiped away happy tears as she told Kayla that John had remembered everything. Kayla's reaction was more downbeat than Marlena had evidently hoped, and asked Kayla what was wrong. Kayla mentioned John's test results, adding that John's central nervous system had suffered a "catastrophic episode." Marlena reminded Kayla that she already knew John's diagnosis, but needed to know what they could do for him. Kayla replied that John's chances of recovery were slim if he remained at University Hospital any longer. Marlena was more than willing to take John wherever she had to, and declared, sobbing, "I didn't just get him back to lose him!"

Kayla informed Marlena that there was a clinic in Lugano, Switzerland, that specialized in cases like John's. She stated that they could fly him there by air ambulance, once he was stabilized and on mobile life support. Marlena went immediately into the hallway to send Brady in to see his father. Brady hesitantly approached John's bedside, and as soon as John called Brady "my boy," he knew John's memory had returned. John thanked Brady for what he'd done, and assured his son that he'd always loved him. Later, Marlena emerged from John's room. She happily announced to Brady, Kayla, and Roman that she and John were getting married right away, in his room, and asked if they would all be guests of honor. They replied with laughter and hearty congratulations, and the three of them went in to visit with John, while Marlena stayed behind to call Father Jansen.

1/26 Bo had a premonition of someone holding a gun. Bo filled Hope in on what Abe told him about catching the killer, and Bo assured Hope that he wasn't going to go outside the law to bring the killer to justice, since he was the commissioner. Bo asked for Steve's help in finding the killer, because Steve could work outside the law to find the mayor's killer. Steve was eager to help. Then Bo had another premonition. This time, it was someone picking up a gun and firing it inside the hospital. Steve sensed something was wrong with Bo, because he was very pale, so Bo told Steve about the premonitions he'd been having since he fell and bumped his head on Christmas. Steve joked about it, which angered Bo. Bo told Steve he had another vision, which involved Hope and a gun. Bo thought a shot was fired from the gun, but he couldn't make out anything else, except that it felt like death. Bo told Steve how he wasn't able to do anything to help Theo when he had his premonition, but Bo thought that he could protect Hope by taking her off the murder investigation. Kayla, Hope, Abe, and Lexie were talking about Kayla's baby, and Theo asked if she was referring to Baby Joe and asked where the baby was. Kayla said Joe was at home with the babysitter.

Lexie told Hope to thank Ciara for the picture she drew for Theo, and Hope said Ciara missed Theo, so Lexie suggested they set up a play date. Abe wondered how the women managed to juggle their careers and still make time for their kids. Lexie said that while they loved their jobs, nothing was more important than family and friends.

Kayla wondered what Bo and Steve were talking about, and Bo said they were talking business. Kayla was worried about what that meant, but Steve assured her that it didn't mean they were going to run off on some adventure like they had in the past. Kayla was glad, because things had changed since the old days and because they had families. Bo said he felt it was time they did something about the fact that their jobs were pulling them apart. He told Hope he was taking her off the murder case, but Hope refused to be taken off the case. Hope wondered why Bo wanted her off the case, and he said he just didn't want her out in the field working that case. Kayla and Steve decided to give Bo and Hope some privacy. Privately, Kayla asked Steve why Bo would take Hope off the case. Steve said he thought Bo made a good decision, and Kayla thought he was being chauvinistic. Steve said he was happy that Bo and Hope had their disagreement, because that meant Steve could have some quiet time with Kayla. Bo didn't want to fight with Hope over removing her from the case, and Hope wondered what he was hiding.

Kayla pressed Steve to find out what he and Bo were talking about, and Steve said that Bo gave him a job and wanted him to start right away. But first, Steve wanted time alone with her. Hope asked Bo why he was trying to protect her all of a sudden. She figured out that he'd had another vision, but he lied and said that wasn't it. He made her promise to be careful. They said goodbye to Lexie, Abe, and Theo so they could spend some quality time together. Bo vowed to Abe to do whatever it took to find the mayor's killer.

1/30 Bo and Hope were at the Brady Pub, having coffee, when Bo had another vision. This time, he could tell it was at University Hospital. He saw Hope grabbing for a gun on the floor, and Kayla, in her white doctor's coat, ducking down as Hope fired the gun. Hope noticed that Bo seemed to have become distracted, and asked what was wrong. Bo claimed he was just preoccupied with the Marino murder. Hope reminded him that he hadn't told her what his last vision had been about, but Bo said he hadn't really been able to make out anything but jumbled images.

Steve arrived just then, and announced that he had a lead on Marino's killer. He explained that he'd had a friend, who was a computer expert, do some digging, and that a corporation called Holtgren International had come up several times in the search. He then ded1/uced that, since the company kept most of their millions of dollars worth of holdings at a bank that had a branch in Salem, Stefano was using Holtgren to bankroll his illegal activities-like hiring hit men.

The three of them discussed their next step. Steve was saying that he wanted to investigate it a little further when he got a text message from Kayla. Suddenly, Bo's earlier vision became clearer: after Hope's gun went off, he could see that Kayla had been shot. While Hope called Roman, Steve noted that Bo seemed troubled, and asked if he'd had another premonition. Bo reluctantly admitted that he had, and that it had involved Hope-and it seemed as if Kayla had been shot. He hastened to add that he couldn't be sure of anything, but Steve maintained that, until Bo was sure what the visions meant, they needed to keep Kayla and Hope apart.

When Hope hung up, she said that Roman had proposed they check the security cameras at Holtgren's bank, to see if the killer had made any withdrawals. Bo suggested that perhaps a teller could identify the man, and they all hoped that the money trail would lead back to the DiMeras. Steve rose to leave, and Hope started to walk out with him, as she was supposed to meet Kayla. Bo stopped her anxiously, but quickly covered, insisting that he just didn't want her to leave because he enjoyed her company. Steve chimed in, adding that Kayla had just been called to the hospital for an emergency.

Maggie was at the hospital asking Kayla about the injured man's condition. Kayla asserted that it was too soon to tell, because he might need surgery, but that the man was fortunate that Maggie had found him when she did. Maggie wondered who the man was, and what had happened to him. Kayla guessed that it had been a mugging, and cautioned Maggie against walking along the pier alone at night. Maggie agreed, adding that she'd feel much safer when they found whoever had stabbed that man.

Kayla got a call from her babysitter, who advised her that baby Joe had lost his stuffed dog. Maggie overheard, so Kayla explained that Joe couldn't sleep without the toy, but she was fairly sure it was in her car. Maggie offered to find the dog and drop it off at Kayla's apartment, since it was on her way home. Kayla gratefully accepted. Maggie left after Kayla promised to call with any news about the injured John Doe.

Dvd #28B 2/2 At the hospital, Kayla was unaware that her patient was the killer, and she mentioned aloud how familiar he looked. The killer heard her, so he reached up and strangled her. Daniel ran into the hospital room and freed Kayla from the killer's clutches, and she ran out yelling for help. Two orderlies wrestled the killer to the bed while Daniel injected a sedative into the killer's IV. Daniel ordered restraints for the killer and then checked on Kayla. She said she was okay, but they wondered what set him off. Kayla told Daniel that the killer's face looked familiar, and then the killer's heart rate dropped, but they were able to revive him. Kayla started to realize that something she said probably set off the killer. She told Daniel to make sure the killer was stabilized, then ran off to call Steve. She left a message for him, saying she needed to talk to him about the sketch he had of the killer. Kayla called Hope asking for Bo, but he had gone to the police station, so Hope agreed to come to the hospital to meet Kayla, passing by Maggie and Chloe on the way out.

When Hope got to the hospital, Kayla filled her in on what happened with her patient, and how she suspected the man was the mayor's killer. Meanwhile, the killer had opened his eyes. Out in the hallway, Daniel gave Kayla and Hope an update on the killer's condition, and suggested he go with Hope to check on the killer when he was paged to another floor. Kayla went in to check on the killer while Hope called for backup. As Kayla approached the room, the killer grabbed her from behind and told everyone to back off or he would kill her.

Bo heard the message Hope left for him saying she was going to the hospital to talk to Kayla about what might be a break in the case, so he ran off to the hospital. Meanwhile, at the hospital, Hope pulled her gun on the killer, but the killer said if Hope shot at him, Kayla would die.

2/3 At Salem Hospital, Hope held the hit man at gunpoint while he held Kayla in a choke hold and threatened to snap her neck. Lexie came around the corner and took in the scene, then slowly backed into a nearby hallway to call Roman and tell him about the hostage situation. The hit man ordered Hope to put her weapon on the ground, and Kayla reminded Hope that he had killed Mayor Marino. Hope reluctantly placed her gun on the floor, but the hit man refused to let go of Kayla. As the hit man looked for a way to escape, Hope offered herself as a hostage instead of Kayla. The hit man refused and instead ordered Hope to find an exit for him. Hope begged the hit man to give her time, but the killer only gripped Kayla tighter. A police officer tried to creep up behind the hit man, but the hit man was ready for him, and managed to knock the officer out while still keeping a hand on Kayla's coat. With a clear shot at the hit man, Hope dropped to the ground and grabbed her gun. At the last moment, the hit man pulled Kayla into the path of the bullet and then threw her to the ground.

Bo and Steve rushed in, and Bo shot the hit man just before he could shoot Hope with the downed officer's pistol. Steve dove to the floor to protect Kayla, as the hit man fell to the ground, dead. Lexie rushed over to examine Kayla's gunshot wound, and quickly carted her down the hall to assess the damage. "My God. What have I done?" Hope stammered. As Hope muttered to herself about what transpired, Bo tried to comfort her and assured her that if anyone was to blame, it was him. The confusion quickly melted from Hope's face as she realized what Bo was saying. Hope asked him whether he had a vision of the shooting, but Bo evaded the question.

2/5 At home, Hope picked up her weapon and remembered how she had accidentally shot Kayla. She and Bo got into an argument over how Bo didn't tell her about his vision of her shooting Kayla at the hospital. Bo tried to explain that he felt his mind was just playing tricks on him, and he tried to console Hope by saying she did what she had to do given that it was a hostage situation. Chelsea interrupted their argument by offering to take care of Ciara while Bo and Hope sorted out their problems. Hope told Chelsea that Ciara had a sleepover and hadn't returned home, so Chelsea offered to pick Ciara up after school. Hope tried to hurry Bo off to his community relations meeting. Bo didn't think the meeting was a big deal, but Hope disagreed. She said it was a good idea for him to go by the book. After Bo left, Hope planned to go to work herself, but Chelsea said it was bold of Hope to go back to work so soon after Kayla's shooting.

After Hope found out that Kayla's condition had improved, she told Chelsea that she didn't feel like having company. Chelsea said she understood what Hope was going through, wondering whether people would ever look at her the same way again. Hope was only concerned about how Kayla would feel about her. Chelsea tried to console Hope over shooting Kayla, but Hope blamed herself. Chelsea wondered what was going on between Hope and Bo.

2/9 Hope visited Kayla at the hospital and asked for forgiveness for shooting Kayla. Kayla said she forgave Hope and told her not to blame herself. Hope said she wished she could have prevented the shooting. Then she filled Kayla in on Bo's visions, including the vision of Hope and Kayla. Hope admitted that Bo told one other person about his visions and then Steve walked in. Kayla couldn't believe that Steve knew about Bo's vision about the shooting and said nothing to Kayla about it. Steve apologized for not telling Kayla about Bo's vision and begged her for a chance to make it up to her. He offered to quit the detective business if that would have made her happy, but she just wanted him to hold her. She realized how ironic it was that she worked in a hospital and ended up getting shot, not Steve. He felt so guilty that she was hurt and wondered what he would have done if she had died. Kayla told him that what was important was that she was still alive.

2/10 Stephanie visited her mother in the hospital. With one look at her daughter's face, Kayla knew that Stephanie was bothered by something. Kayla asked Stephanie to open up and hesitantly, she did. Stephanie talked about Philip and said, "I think it's over." When Stephanie explained that it was because Philip seemed to be ruthless like Victor, Kayla chuckled. Kayla reminded Stephanie that when she first met Steve he was "a genuine bad guy." Stephanie asked whether Kayla had changed Steve, but Kayla noted that it was Steve's character that motivated the change. Wiping her tears, Stephanie wondered aloud whether Philip was capable of changing into a more caring person. Kayla advised Stephanie not to settle for anyone that she did not find trustworthy, honorable, and able to put her first. Gently touching Stephanie's arm, Kayla concluded, "I don't think that's Philip, no matter how much he changes." Fighting more tears, Stephanie thanked Kayla for her honesty.

2/11 Daniel went to the hospital to check on Kayla, and filled her in that the fundraiser had been a success. Kayla wanted to know if Daniel had met any nice women. Daniel was clearly uncomfortable, so she immediately apologized for being nosy, explaining that she was only concerned because she liked him-and he seemed lonely. When he assured her that he wasn't, Kayla assumed that he had someone special in his life, and that was why he hadn't wanted to be auctioned off at the fundraiser. She added that he'd seemed unhappy since his breakup with Kate, so she hoped he truly was moving on with his life and would soon be back to his old, effervescent self.

2/16 Kayla tried to get out of her hospital bed so she could testify at Hope's police hearing, but Steve tried to stop her. Kayla thought she could help Hope keep her job, and maybe it would help Bo and Hope stay together. At her hearing, Roman and Bo testified about what happened at the hospital when Hope accidentally shot Kayla. The officials wanted to know if the rules allowed Hope to fire at will in a hostage situation. Bo told them firing at will required the direct verbal command of the ranking officer on the scene and Hope didn't receive that order. Bo tried to give more positive testimony on Hope's behalf, but the review board stopped him and made a note that he was married to Hope. The board told them they needed time to confer. Then, Kayla interrupted the meeting and demanded to testify on Hope's behalf. After Kayla's testimony, a board member mentioned that Kayla was related to Hope through marriage. After the hearing, Hope walked out of the room, handed Bo her badge, and walked off.

2/17 At the police station Hope handed her badge over to Bo. Apologizing for her suspension, Bo said, "I'm sorry this happened." "So am I," Hope said firmly. Hope reminded Bo that she believed in his visions and that she could not stop thinking that if he had told her about his vision of Kayla that the shooting could have been avoided. "I'll never forgive myself," Hope said shaking her head. "Or me?" Bo asked. Frustrated, Bo offered to head into the boardroom and change their minds about the suspension, but Hope asked him to back off. Hope added that their problems were not just limited to the suspension.

"After everything we've been through we're gonna let this come between us? That's crazy!" Bo pleaded. Holding back her emotions, Hope said that she did not know how to get past it because she would always have the memory of seeing Kayla lying on the floor, bleeding. Bo begged Hope not to shut him out, because their marriage was worth fighting for. When Hope refused to go home with him, Bo asked her to go home with him for Ciara's sake. Upset, Hope said she was not ready to go home and that she was not sure when she would be ready.

At Salem Hospital, Stephanie and Steve told Kayla how proud they were that she went to testify on Hope's behalf at her hearing. Kayla worried aloud about Hope's relationship with Bo, which caused Stephanie's eyes to tear up. "Why does it always have to be so hard?" Stephanie lamented. Kayla inquired whether Stephanie had broken up with Philip, and, concerned, Steve asked whether Philip had hurt Stephanie. Stephanie assured her parents that Philip had not hurt her and that her problem with Philip was that she did not like his ruthless side when it came to business. "It's obvious it's not meant to be," Stephanie said.

Steve advised Stephanie to dump Philip, but upset, Stephanie asked her father not to tell her what to do. "I'm not a kid and I already know what I need to do and you'll be happy to hear that I'm..." Stephanie cried out before stopping herself and asking her parents to leave her alone. Steve agreed that he would let her make her own decisions but reminded her that her happiness meant the world to him. With the emotion drained from her voice, Stephanie announced that things were over with Philip, then said goodbye and left her mother's hospital room.

As Kayla and Steve started discussing the problems between Bo and Hope, Roman walked into Kayla's room and informed them about Hope's suspension pending a full investigation. When Roman went outside to take a phone call, a furious Kayla grabbed her cell phone and started to call Abe. Steve took the phone from her hand and encouraged her to let go of her anger and concentrate on recuperating. Kayla resisted at first, but Steve reminded her that Bo and Hope had gotten through worse situations before and had emerged from those times even stronger.

Note: Steve & Kayla just disappear after this episode with no exit storyline.

Kayla returns again from June 18 - 29, 2010

6/18/2010 At the Brady Pub, Kayla surprised Stephanie by creeping up behind her and hugging her. Kayla explained that Steve and Joe were not going to be able to visit, but that they sent Stephanie their love. When talk turned to Nathan, Stephanie confided in her mother that her relationship with Nathan was getting serious. Stephanie admitted that she did "something really stupid" because she felt insecure. Though failing to explain what she did, Stephanie noted that she learned that she did not need to "trap" Nathan. Curious, Kayla asked Stephanie where her "desperation" came from. Stephanie admitted that Melanie unnerved her. Nathan entered the pub, greeted Kayla, and informed her that his mother, Melissa, was visiting with Alice. After chatting with Kayla, Nathan excused himself to get a cup of coffee. With a slight smile on her face, Kayla confided in Stephanie that she approved of Stephanie's new boyfriend and that she hoped the relationship worked out. "It will. I'm gonna make sure of it," Stephanie said.

While Nathan was fixing a cup of coffee for Melissa, she entered the pub and snuck up behind him. Thrilled to see his mother, Nathan spun around and pulled her in to a bear hug. "I got a surprise for you," Nathan said with a grin. Taking his mother by the shoulders, Nathan spun Melissa around to face toward Kayla. "Kayla!" Melissa shouted. Kayla ran over to Melissa and hugged her. Over coffee, Kayla and Melissa sat with Nathan and Stephanie and reminisced about Alice. "She never ever forgot how important it is to be with the ones you love," Melissa said with a smile. While Kayla and Melissa continued to chat, Nathan and Stephanie went over to the bar and discussed dinner. Nathan reached into his pocket to grab a surprise for Stephanie, but finding it was not there, Nathan noted that he had to run home and get the surprise before dinner.

6/22 In the Brady Pub, Kayla promised Caroline that her next visit would be for a more pleasant occasion. When Kayla looked over her shoulder at Nathan and Stephanie, a flustered Stephanie explained to Nathan that Kayla was referring to a happy occasion like a birthday. After Nathan left, Caroline sat down at a table with Stephanie and Kayla and reminisced about Alice. "I can't remember a time when the two of you weren't the best of friends," Kayla said. Caroline agreed and noted that she and Alice had always agreed that family was the most important thing in life.

6/24 Kayla stopped by the house to see Bo, and she took Kimberly with her to surprise him. Kim told Bo that he helped her get her life back. Kim said it was great for her kids to be around family, because it was tough on them since Kim divorced Shane and even tougher since the kids never saw their father. Kim said it seemed like Shane had dropped off the face of the earth. Kim got upset thinking about how Shane had been risking his life by trying to save the world while his family suffered. Bo told Kayla that he needed to call Carly, and Kayla asked if Carly was going to the funeral. Bo said she wasn't, and Kayla was pleased. He knew that Kayla disapproved of his relationship with Carly. Since Kayla wasn't there and didn't know what had happened, Bo said that she should suspend judgment. Kayla said she didn't need to have been there to know that Bo and Hope belonged together in their house with Ciara. Bo tried to explain what happened between Bo and Hope. He said Hope moved out. Kayla defended Hope and said that Hope was "beside herself." Bo said he didn't want Hope to move out, but when she did, he fell in love with Carly, and it changed everything.

6/25 Kayla tried to talk some sense into Bo and convince him that he was making a mistake by being with Carly. She called Carly "nothing but a distraction." Hope stopped by the house to see Bo, and finds Kayla, Kim, and Roman were there. Roman made an excuse for them to leave Bo and Hope alone. Kayla joined Justin and Adrienne. Justin had to go to a meeting, so he said his goodbyes. Adrienne asked if Stephanie had told Kayla about Nathan. Kayla said she could tell that Stephanie was crazy about Nathan, and Adrienne said that Kayla didn't know the half of it. Kayla tried to figure out what Adrienne was talking about and whether something was going on with Stephanie, but Adrienne just said that it had been "intense." Adrienne said it would be fine, and she would see Kayla at the church.

Everyone gathered at the burial site (no church services shown). Kayla told Lexie and Abe that it was a sad way to have a reunion, and Abe wished that Theo had been there, because Theo would have loved to see Kayla. Caroline told the crowd that whenever she had difficulty with family problems, Caroline turned to the person who could handle the problems. Julie said that Alice didn't approve of all of Julie's life choices, but Alice never stopped loving Julie or wanting what was best for her. Doug said that Alice was a fair and great lady who convinced him to be a responsible husband and father. Maggie said Alice convinced her to step up and try harder. Maggie said that if something was worth fighting for, "you need to get in there and fight."

If it weren't for Alice's encouragement, Lucas said that he wouldn't be alive. He explained that he didn't find out he was a Horton until he was a teenager, but when he did, it was overwhelming. He considered Alice to be "like royalty." He said it was intimidating, exciting, and rewarding to find out that he was related to Alice. Melissa talked about how Alice "knew what you were thinking" sometimes before you thought it, and she had the best advice about boys. Nathan said Alice had the best advice about girls. He said that whenever he and his mother visited, Alice always made them feel loved and at home.

Bo said that "Mrs. H." was a perfect example of "how we should live our lives with love and hard work and honesty and integrity, but most of all with humor." Alice always encouraged him to be good and do what was right, and she would let Bo know when he didn't, Bo said. He said she always advised him to follow his heart. Jennifer said she never could have imagined the day that Alice wouldn't be there, because Alice hated saying goodbye, "it was always until we meet again." Jennifer said, "Here's to your next adventure, Gram."

Back at the church, Hope said she was at a loss for words. She said that Alice was the woman that Hope aspired to be. "She wasn't just the matriarch of this family, she was a friend. She was someone we trusted and we loved, and she loved us back. She loved us back unconditionally no matter what was happening in our lives," Hope said as she turned to look at Bo. Hope said she knew that Alice would look out for them for the rest of the days of their lives. Lucas placed a picture of Tom in the corner of Alice's framed picture. Mourners placed yellow roses on top of Alice's coffin.

6/28 At Alice's house, the family sat around looking at pictures in the photo album. Doug thought about when Alice had played Groucho Marx at a hospital benefit. Roman asked Kayla if she had seen Shane, and Kayla said that she saw him for a short while, but then he disappeared. Roman wondered where Shane went and where Kim was. Bo looked on as Kayla told Hope that it was obvious that she and Bo still loved and needed each other. Hope didn't want to talk about it, and Kayla asked Hope to "stop the nonsense" and get back together. Hope told Kayla that getting back together was more complicated than just wanting it or saying they should because a lot had happened. Kayla said she knew that, but she said that someone had to make the first move. Kayla thought it was significant that Bo went to Alice's house and did not take Carly with him, because he knew that Hope would be there.

6/29 At the Brady Pub, Stephanie and Kayla looked at photos of Joe, and Kayla complimented Stephanie on how happy she looked. Stephanie noted that she was doing better than she was a year before when she was still dating Philip. When Kayla looked uncomfortable, Stephanie urged her mother to say what was on her mind. Kayla noted that Stephanie seemed to mention Philip frequently since they were no longer dating one another.

"I just wish that he was completely out of your mind, since he's out of your life," Kayla commented. Stephanie disagreed and explained that Philip was still in her circle of friends. Stephanie confessed that she was worried about Philip because "even when he tries to do the right thing and be a good guy, it always backfires." Stephanie admitted that she was worried that Philip had done something terrible to Melanie.

"I'm not going to sit by and watch that happen," Stephanie said. As Kayla had a puzzled look on her face, Stephanie explained that she was worried that if Philip broke Melanie's heart that she would return to Nathan. Before Kayla could respond, her cell phone started to ring and she excused herself to answer it. Noticing Kayla's return, Stephanie kissed her mother goodbye and left the pub. Narrowing her eyes, Kayla greeted Philip sternly. "Whatever Stephanie told you, I hope you don't go around telling people," Philip said. Unfazed, Kayla noted that Philip had a pattern of hurting people and reminded Philip that he took his son, Pocket, away from them, yet failed to raise Pocket himself. "If you can be so cavalier with something like that, one has to wonder how easily you would give up on a marriage or anything else for that matter," Kayla said. And once again, Kayla just walks away and we don’t see her for a few months. No real goodbye, no final scenes with Bo, Kim, Roman, not even Stephanie.

Kayla Returns Again:

9/23/10 Nathan and Stephanie began making out, when there was a knock at the door. She assumed that it was the pizza deliveryman, but it turned out to be her mother, who was holding the pizza Stephanie had ordered. Kayla was shocked to see Nathan standing shirtless in the living room. Stephanie was happily surprised to see Kayla, and she asked if her mother had traveled to Salem with her brother, Joe. Kayla said that Joe was also in town and that Steve had stayed behind, because he thought it was a "woman thing." Kayla told her about Adrienne's phone call, saying Adrienne had been concerned that Stephanie needed Kayla. Stephanie said that Adrienne was overreacting, because Adrienne wanted to see Kayla and used it as an excuse to convince Kayla to return to Salem. Nathan was paged to the hospital, and after he left, Kayla said, "You may have got him fooled, but not me. What's going on?"

Stephanie wondered why Kayla hadn't called first, because she could have explained that Adrienne was overreacting. Kayla was waiting for Stephanie to calm down so they could talk. Kayla wanted to talk about the guy that Adrienne had seen Stephanie with. Stephanie felt offended that Adrienne had called Kayla just because she'd seen Stephanie talking to an old friend. Kayla said she was in town for more than just Stephanie. Kayla was there because Hope was in jail and Sami had found out that E.J. had kidnapped Sydney. Kayla said she planned to stay for a while. Stephanie was glad that her mother was there, because she'd missed her. Stephanie offered to have Kayla and Joey stay with her, but Kayla planned to stay with Caroline. Stephanie wanted Kayla to see that she and Nathan were happy. Kayla asked if Stephanie was still worried about Melanie and Nathan. Stephanie said that she wasn't worried about Melanie and Nathan anymore, because Nathan was over Melanie and Melanie was over him. Kayla wasn't buying it.

9/24 As they entered the Brady Pub together, Stephanie insisted to Kayla that she and Nathan were perfectly happy together. "Ian is a good friend," Stephanie assured her mom. "Aunt Adrienne was wrong. He's a non-issue!" As Stephanie's cell phone rang, Kayla said that she was going to look for Caroline, but she overheard Stephanie answer the phone, "Ian, what is it? This isn't a good time." Ian advised her to make time to hear what he'd found out. Stephanie then claimed she had to leave, because something had come up at the hospital. She reminded a concerned Kayla, "You can't be mad at me, because you used to leave me for the hospital all the time." Stephanie kissed her mom goodbye and left. Kayla remarked to herself disappointedly, "But when I said I was going to the hospital, I wasn't lying."

9/27 Ian was telling Stephanie that Daniel hadn't switched Chloe's paternity test results, when Kayla walked in. Stephanie introduced Ian to Kayla, and then Ian left. Kayla asked Stephanie what test Ian was referring to, and Stephanie asked her to let it go, but Kayla wouldn't. Stephanie said she wished she was "in the dark like Daniel." Stephanie told Kayla that Chloe had engaged in an affair with Philip, the baby she was carrying was Philip's, and neither Daniel nor Chloe knew the baby's real paternity. Stephanie told Kayla that she and Ian had hacked into the computer system at St. Mary's hospital to look at the test results. Kayla said it was not only wrong, it was illegal. Stephanie explained that she'd needed to know because Philip and Melanie's marriage would be ruined over Chloe's affair. Kayla asked what that had to do with Stephanie. "Because if that had happened, then Nathan would feel like he had to run to Melanie and help her, and once again, she ruins my life," Stephanie said.

Stephanie explained that the test results had been changed from the first time that she and Ian had looked at them. Stephanie said she had suspected that Philip or Chloe had done it, but Ian had determined that neither of them nor Daniel had done it. Kayla said it didn't matter who had switched the results or why. Kayla said that the test results needed to be fixed, because everyone involved deserved to know the truth, no matter how painful it might be. "Don't you understand what that would do to me?" Stephanie said. "Stephanie, this isn't about you. This is about the paternity of a baby. This is about a very serious deception with very serious repercussions. Why don't you get that?" Kayla said. Stephanie asked, "What about the serious problems in my life?" Kayla was frustrated with Stephanie's selfishness.

Stephanie begged Kayla not to tell the truth, because she feared she would lose Nathan. Kayla pointed out that Stephanie didn't know that, and she said if that was the truth, Nathan wasn't worth keeping. Kayla asked how Stephanie could be so desperate and insecure, and she asked if Stephanie really wanted to be with a man who didn't want to be with her. "I am not desperate! I am in love, and if you don't understand that, then you can just go back and leave me alone," Stephanie screamed, and she stormed out.

9/27 Daniel stopped by Stephanie and Nathan's apartment, and Kayla answered the door. Daniel assumed that Kayla was in town for Hope, but she said that wasn't the only reason she was there.

9/28 At Stephanie's apartment, Kayla told Daniel that she needed to talk to him about Chloe. When Daniel guessed that Kayla was upset that Daniel had not emailed her with the news, Kayla assured him that she understood why he could not keep her up-to-date on his life. Daniel talked about how happy he was that Chloe was pregnant and that he had his other child, Melanie, back in his life. When Kayla appeared less than thrilled by Daniel's mention of Carly, Daniel asked Kayla why she seemed displeased with Carly. With a groan, Kayla reminded Daniel that Carly had broken up her brother's marriage to Hope. When Daniel noted that Carly was responsible for providing him with a "wonderful" daughter, Kayla reminded Daniel that Melanie had suffered through a painful childhood because of Carly. "She thought she was protecting Melanie's life by giving her away, not to mention my life," Daniel said. Daniel talked about how much he loved being a dad, and that he was excited to be a dad a second time. When Kayla groaned under her breath, Daniel asked Kayla what was bothering her about Chloe.

Daniel assured Kayla that he loved Chloe and was deliriously happy. When the topic of conversation turned to when Kayla and Daniel had first met, they laughed about how he'd walked in to the wrong surgery on one occasion. "Hospitals make mistakes. Even the best-run places make errors, need correcting," Kayla said quietly. After receiving a call from the hospital, Daniel invited Kayla to his wedding the following week, then left for work.

Kayla was sipping a cup of tea, when Stephanie returned home to her apartment. Stephanie apologized for running out of the apartment earlier. Kayla assured Stephanie that she was not mad at her daughter. "I was wrong. Daniel should know he's not the father," Stephanie said. Kayla informed Stephanie that she had talked to Daniel, but she had not told him about the paternity test. Kayla told Stephanie that she wanted to make sure that the test results had not been changed due to a hospital error. Kayla explained that it was possible for a lab tech to put in the wrong results, then go back and change the original entry later after the error was spotted. "I think the best thing we can do, you and everyone else, is to not say anything," Kayla said. Kayla informed Stephanie that she wanted to make sure that the test results change was just an innocent mistake.

10/5 At Stephanie's apartment, Kayla informed her daughter about her plans to talk to Sister Anne about the paternity test. "I hope she tells you that it was a mistake and Daniel really is the father," Stephanie said fretfully. Kayla noted that if someone outside the hospital had changed the results then that person would have to know about the affair. When Stephanie pointed out that outside of Chloe and Philip, she was the only one that knew about the affair, Kayla assured her daughter that the problem was likely a clerical error. Kayla urged Stephanie to "stop acting like some desperate teenager" and to trust Nathan.

Kayla arrived at the pub and gave Ciara a stuffed bear. As Ciara went to show her grandmother her new bear, Bo hugged his sister. When Kayla mentioned that she was going to stay with Caroline while she was in town, Bo offered Kayla a place to stay. Noting that she did not want to stay in the house with Carly, Kayla declined Bo's offer. "That woman has zero integrity. She lies her head off as long as she gets what she wants," Kayla added. "So the fact that I love her makes no difference to you?" Bo asked gruffly. Kayla said that she was worried about Hope. "Life hasn't been rosy for me either," Bo said. Kayla hugged Bo, and told him that she was going to see Hope at the prison. "Tell her I said hello," Bo said softly. With a nod, Kayla left.

At the visitors' area of the prison, Hope was surprised to find Kayla waiting to see her. As Kayla rushed to greet Hope, the guard advised Kayla that she could not have contact with the prisoners. "You have my full support, and I love you. I always will," Kayla said softly to Hope. Kayla urged Hope to let Bo visit her. "His freedom? I'm going to give it to him," Hope said. Hope explained that she had asked Justin to deliver divorce papers to Bo. "You and Bo are destined to be together. I will never believe otherwise. Never," Kayla said.

10/6 Later, Stephanie met her mom at the Brady Pub, and asked if Kayla had talked to Sister Anne yet. Kayla replied that Sister Anne had pushed their appointment back until a couple of days later. Stephanie flipped out, and Kayla asked what was going on. Stephanie admitted that Nathan had found out that Chloe had cheated on Daniel, although he didn't know it had been with Philip. Although Stephanie felt guilty for keeping from Nathan that she had known about it for a while, too, she was determined not to let him find out. Kayla expressed her disappointment in her daughter for continuing the lies, but Stephanie argued, "What good can come out of telling him the truth now?" Kayla cautioned her daughter that Nathan probably wasn't the only other person who knew.

10/7 At the Brady Pub, Kayla advised Stephanie that other people besides Nathan might know about Chloe cheating on Daniel. Stephanie realized that it didn't matter whether or not Chloe had dealt with her infidelity. As long as Stephanie and Nathan were okay, that was all that mattered, Stephanie added. Kayla told Stephanie that she was aware that Stephanie had stopped taking her birth control pills in order to get pregnant and trap Nathan. Kayla asked how solid Stephanie's relationship was if she didn't believe that Nathan really loved her back.

Stephanie asked how Kayla knew about the birth control pills, and she said Adrienne had told her. Stephanie said nothing had happened, because she'd "fixed it." Kayla was appalled that Stephanie had felt she needed to "cheat" to get a man. "That was not how you were raised. That is not how you have ever been. What is going on with you?" Kayla asked. Stephanie was upset that Adrienne had broken her trust and told her mother. Kayla told her to forget about Adrienne, and she wanted to know if Nathan was aware that Stephanie had tried to get pregnant. Stephanie said she had admitted it to Nathan, and they had both agreed that they weren't ready to have kids. Kayla asked Stephanie to have confidence in who she was and said that if Nathan didn't see that, he wasn't the right person for her. Stephanie assured her mother that she would be okay.

10/14 Stephanie told Kayla that the paternity test might not be an issue anymore, because Melanie had found out that Chloe had cheated on Daniel and was probably putting a stop to Daniel and Chloe's wedding. Kayla asked if Stephanie had set it up so that Melanie would overhear Stephanie and Nathan talking about Chloe's infidelity. Stephanie assured Kayla that she had not arranged for Melanie to find out. Kayla felt that it might be a good thing if Daniel and Chloe didn't get married, because everyone needed to deal with what was real.

"Sometimes what you don't know can't hurt you," Stephanie said. "No, usually, it just hurts you later," Kayla said. Kayla said Stephanie needed to realize that Nathan loved her. Stephanie said she knew that, but she always thought, "What if Melanie forgives Nathan?" Kayla assured Stephanie that Nathan would still love her.

"He's Nathan Horton, for God's sake. I think his word means something," Kayla said. Stephanie realized that Kayla was right, but she still hoped that Melanie didn't stop the wedding. Kayla said it was out of Stephanie's hands. Stephanie asked "What about the paternity test?" "What about it?" Kayla asked. Stephanie felt that the paternity test was still important. Kayla asked if it was that important for them to find out what the true results were. She still planned to talk to Sister Ann about the test, but she figured she might "come up empty." Stephanie rationalized that the baby probably was Daniel's, because the people who knew about the test didn't know how to switch the results.

10/21 Kayla planned to see Sister Anne about Chloe's paternity results, but she needed to run an errand first. Stephanie was confident that Daniel was the father of Chloe's baby. Stephanie called Sister Anne to tell her that Kayla would be delayed. Then, she ran into Ian, who asked if everything was okay. Stephanie said that things were almost perfect. Stephanie told Ian about Kayla's theory that the hospital had recorded the results wrong at first and then corrected the error when they realized the mistake, meaning that the baby was Daniel's. Ian theorized that Kayla was wrong, and someone had switched the results.

Kayla walked into Sami's apartment as Sami and Arianna wrestled each other for the camera. Arianna threatened to tell Kayla what Sami had done. Kayla tried to defend Sami to Arianna, but Arianna rushed toward the door. Sami pushed Kayla out of the way to get to Arianna, saying she could not to let Arianna ruin her life. Later, Kayla ran into Bo and told him about Sami and Arianna's confrontation.

10/22 In the park, Carly begged an irate Sister Anne to let her explain why she had lied when she had taken Chloe to St. Mary's for the paternity test. "What is there to say, Dr. Manning?" Sister Anne argued. "You ordered a major medical test under false pretenses, using a false name and identification!" The nun threatened to tell Dr. Jonas everything, but Carly begged her not to, at least not until she'd heard Carly out. Carly revealed that Chloe had slept with another man because someone had manipulated her into believing that Carly and Daniel were having an affair, to get back at Carly. "I couldn't live with the idea that Daniel and Chloe were going to be hurt because of me," Carly explained. "So I agreed to help Chloe get the paternity test done in secret."

Kayla, who had seen part of Carly and Sister Anne's confrontation at the hospital, followed them to the park. She arrived just as Carly was imploring Sister Anne, "I am begging you, do not tell Daniel." Kayla hid behind a tree to eavesdrop. Sister Anne maintained that what Carly had done was unethical, immoral, and illegal, and she refused to help Carly cover it up. Sister Anne acknowledged that Carly had done a great deal to help St. Mary's, but the nun needed time to think about how to proceed. Carly urged Sister Anne to consider the "sweet, innocent little baby" while she was making her decision. Sister Anne was annoyed that Carly would manipulate her by using her love of children. Carly apologized again for having deceived Sister Anne, and then left.

Kayla emerged from her hiding place, startling Sister Anne, and asked if it were a good time for them to have their meeting. Sister Anne admitted that she was upset, and asked Kayla to call the office the next day to reschedule. After the nun left, Kayla wondered if the reason Sister Anne was so angry could be that she'd found out Carly had changed the paternity test results.

10/29 When Bo met Kayla at the Brady Pub, she told him that she needed to talk to him about Carly. Kayla wondered whether Bo really knew what Carly was capable of after they had been apart for so many years. Kayla hinted that Carly had made Bo "abandon" Hope. Bo became exasperated, declaring, "You have to accept reality: Carly is my future. Nothing you can say will change that."

Bo added that he would never turn his back on Hope, and he would do whatever he could to help and support her. "Ciara will see her mother as much as possible," he asserted, his voice breaking as he continued, "Hope will always be a part of my life, a part of my heart, so please, don't diminish that." He left to take a phone call.

Carly was sitting miserably on a bench by the water later when Kayla approached. Although obviously upset and distracted, Carly suggested that they should get together for dinner before Kayla left town again. Kayla coldly replied that she was leaving that night then demanded, "How do you live with yourself?" Carly assumed that Kayla was referring to Bo and Carly's relationship, which prevented Bo and Hope from living happily ever after, and angrily reminded Kayla that Bo and Hope had been apart before Bo had gotten involved with Carly. "Who Bo decides to love and spend his life with is not for you to decide!" Carly practically yelled, and she stormed off. Kayla told herself that she needed an ally, and left in the opposite direction.

Kayla returned to the Brady Pub and guessed when she saw her mother that something was bothering her. Caroline filled her in about the incident with Nicole and Sydney and admitted that she didn't know how to tell Sami about it. Kayla confided that she was in a similar situation, only she was about to destroy Bo's life. She swore her mother to secrecy then told her about Chloe's paternity test -- the results of which Kayla believed Carly had switched. "Given everything that Bo has gone through with Hope," Kayla explained, "when Carly's actions come to light, not only could his job end, but it could ruin him emotionally." She asserted that Bo needed to know what Carly had done, but Caroline urged her not to tell him.
"She didn't do it," Caroline declared, insisting, "Carly didn't switch the results."
Kayla was puzzled. "How could you know that?" she asked.

11/1 At the Brady Pub, Kayla was determined to tell Bo the truth about the paternity test. Caroline said that no one wanted Philip to be the baby's father and as long as no one got hurt, it wasn't a crime. Caroline confessed that she had changed the test results. Kayla said it made no sense that Caroline would do that. Caroline said she would do whatever it took to protect her family. Caroline said she felt bad for Stephanie and her fear of losing Nathan to Melanie. Kayla asked what that had to do with Caroline changing the test results. Caroline said she had overheard Ian and Stephanie talking about Chloe having Philip's baby and how that would drive Melanie right into Nathan's arms. Caroline said Stephanie's worry broke her heart. Kayla asked how Caroline was able to hack into a computer system. Caroline said she didn't have to, she just logged in, because she was a volunteer in the billing department and had universal access. Kayla felt it was out of character for Caroline and demanded to know why Caroline had lied to her.

Kayla wondered why Caroline had never said anything to Kayla when she knew that Kayla had returned to Salem because she was worried about Stephanie. "Would you like me to put it up on a billboard? It's a secret for a reason, you know," Caroline said. Caroline explained that she wanted Stephanie to be happy and to be with Nathan, who Caroline considered a "wonderful young man."

"No you didn't. You betrayed her. You betrayed all of us," Kayla said. Caroline said her job was to keep her kids safe and happy, "but sometimes I do things that aren't very warm or fuzzy." Kayla noted that Caroline had not raised her kids to be liars or to "manipulate the facts to come out the way we want them to."

"Would you look at me? Would you see me for the woman I really am? I am a woman who lied to her husband about Bo's paternity for years and years and years," Caroline said. Kayla thought that Caroline had regrets about that, and Caroline said she had "a great big regret that the truth ever came out," and she was determined not to let a mistake like that happen again. Kayla admonished Caroline for trying to control someone else's life. Caroline reminded Kayla about when Philip took Pocket from Kayla and Steve and gave him to strangers. Kayla accused Caroline of playing God with Chloe's baby's life. Caroline was offended by Kayla's accusation. Caroline said that Victor finding out about being Bo's father was the worst mistake Caroline had ever made, and she felt that the world didn't need another Kiriakis. Kayla said it wasn't Caroline's call. "The hell it isn't. I want that baby to have a good home. I want Stephanie to be happy, and I tell you what, I'll do anything to see that happens," Caroline said.

At the pub, Kayla said that Caroline wanted to deny Victor a grandchild, but Caroline corrected her, saying she had done it for Stephanie to be happy. Caroline felt powerless over Hope and Bo's breakup, but she wasn't sorry for meddling in Stephanie's life. She also ordered Kayla not to say anything to anyone. Caroline told Kayla to fly back to Africa as she had planned to do that night and forget about their conversation. Caroline asked Kayla to respect her experience and her wishes. Kayla didn't know if she could, and she needed some air, so she rushed out. Bo noticed Kayla was upset and asked what was going on.

11/2 Outside the Brady Pub, Bo questioned an obviously upset Kayla about what was wrong. Kayla was about to tell him that Caroline had switched Chloe's paternity-test results when Carly arrived. When he saw the icy glance that passed between Kayla and Carly, Bo firmly told Kayla that, regardless of whether she approved, she had to respect his and Carly's relationship. Kayla apologized to Carly for having been unfair and judgmental, and Bo and Carly were both grateful. "Don't you want to know why I've made a complete 180 here?" Kayla asked, a bit peeved. "I mean, aren't you curious, either of you?" Although Bo maintained that he didn't need to know the reason, Kayla said that she needed to tell him.

Kayla led Carly and Bo inside, where they found Caroline working. "I'm glad you're still here," Kayla declared. "Because what I am saying to Bo and Carly concerns you, too." Caroline implored, "Kayla, please, don't do this!" Just as a completely bemused Bo demanded to know what was going on, Stephanie and Nathan excitedly burst in to announce their engagement. "You are now looking at the future Dr. and Mrs. Nathan Horton!" Stephanie proclaimed as she showed off her ring. Everyone hugged and congratulated the happy couple. Stephanie noted that the others seemed to have been in a serious conversation, but before anyone could respond, a phone call to Bo's cell phone interrupted them.

As Bo took the call outside, Caroline used the opportunity to drag Kayla into the kitchen to retrieve some celebratory champagne. "You're not going to say anything, not today," Caroline hissed. "Look how happy your daughter is! Everybody's happy-Daniel and Chloe are happy, Melanie and Philip... Why do you want to mess with that?" A furious Kayla pointed out that Caroline was the one who had "messed with" things, and asserted that the truth had to come out, because Chloe's baby deserved to know who its father was. Bo cut in to let Kayla and Caroline know that Hope needed to see him, so whatever Kayla needed to tell him would have to wait. After he had gone, Caroline declared to Kayla, "That's a sign that you're not supposed to say the truth to anybody ever." When Stephanie repeated her question about why everyone had seemed so serious when she and Nathan had arrived, Kayla announced with a pointed glare at Caroline that she wasn't returning to Africa until she got things straightened out.

Carly then had to leave, and Nathan said he had to check in at the hospital. As Stephanie walked him out, she told him that it was the happiest day of her life. A beaming Stephanie returned to her mother and grandmother, and asked them what was going on. Still glaring at her mother, Kayla stated firmly, "Well, in a nutshell, everything has gotten completely out of control, but it ends here." Caroline urged Kayla not to ruin Stephanie's special day. "Ruin it?" a freaked-out Stephanie echoed. "My God, Mom, just tell me!" Kayla never took her eyes off of Caroline as she replied, "Baby, it's about the results of the paternity test for Chloe's baby. There has been a mistake, a terrible mistake.”

11/4 At the Brady Pub, Kayla told Stephanie in front of Caroline that Daniel wasn't the baby's father -- Philip was. Kayla said she had been wrong to theorize that it was a clerical error. Stephanie asked why they were talking about it in front of Caroline, and Caroline said it was because she already knew. Stephanie asked what Kayla had said to Caroline. Kayla said that Philip, Chloe, and Daniel needed to know the truth. Stephanie told Kayla that Chloe and Daniel were "dying to have this baby" while Philip wasn't. Kayla said that Daniel would find out, because as a doctor, he had many ways to learn the truth. Kayla warned Stephanie to prepare herself for when the truth came out. Stephanie assumed that Kayla was referring to Nathan leaving Stephanie.

Stephanie explained that if Kayla told the truth, Melanie would leave Philip and run to Nathan, and Melanie and Nathan would be together. Stephanie assumed that Kayla didn't care about the fate of Stephanie's relationship, but Kayla said she did care. Kayla got a phone call informing her that Steve had malaria, so she had to leave, but she hoped that Stephanie would inform Chloe, Daniel, and Philip about the paternity test results. Kayla told Stephanie that Caroline had switched the results. Caroline explained why she had switched the results. Stephanie said that Caroline could go to jail. Kayla said it wasn't like Caroline. "It is me. It's the me who let Bo think that your father was his father for 30 years, and it turned out all right," Caroline said. Kayla said she couldn't leave Salem unless she knew that everything was going to be right and that Stephanie and Caroline would survive what happened. Nathan arrived, and Stephanie hugged him.

Nathan asked what was wrong, and Stephanie said that Steve was very sick, so Kayla needed to leave town to be with him. Kayla urged Stephanie to see that the truth came out as soon as the paternity test results came out. Stephanie said she had realized that when Nathan walked in, that she didn't want to lie to him or trick him. She wanted the same kind of marriage that Kayla and Steve had. Kayla wanted Stephanie to be with a man who trusted her and loved her with all his heart. Caroline proposed a toast to Stephanie and Nathan's engagement as Maggie and Melanie walked in.

Kayla Returns Again: 12/28 Kayla exited a plane at Salem airport and headed for the pub. When Kayla arrived at the pub, she looked in the front window and expressed surprise at seeing her brother Roman getting along with Caroline after she'd told the truth about the paternity switch. With a shrug, Kayla entered the pub and walked up to her brother as he was discussing Bo and Hope's escape with Rafe. Caroline gaped as she saw her daughter.

"You don't seem happy to see me," Kayla said questioningly at Caroline. Shaking her head, Caroline recovered and expressed joy as her daughter's visit. After Roman explained that Rafe was the acting commander since Roman took a leave of absence, Rafe left. As Roman turned back to his mother and sister, Kayla remarked, "I'm still glad that you and mom are on good terms." Roman looked confused and shook off Kayla's comment. Once Roman had left, Kayla asked her mother whether she had told everyone that she had switched the paternity results for Parker like she had promised to do. Caroline repeatedly changed the subject, and she would only say, "I've taken care of it." Suspicious, Kayla pushed Caroline to tell her about everyone's reactions to the news about the paternity switch.

12/29 At the Brady Pub, Caroline sarcastically accused Kayla of appointing herself the "moral authority of everything." Kayla asserted that Philip deserved to know that Chloe's baby was really his, but then she realized with horror that her mother had not told anyone about the paternity test switch. Caroline defended her actions firmly, and insisted that she had only done what Stephanie had wanted. Caroline warned Kayla, "You've been outvoted, so just don't go and ruin everything." Kayla maintained that Stephanie's marriage would be based on a lie. Caroline contended that Philip thought babies were disposable and did not deserve to be a father.

While Kayla and Caroline were arguing, Adrienne arrived, and was thrilled to see her sister-in-law. Kayla explained that she had returned for Stephanie's wedding, and Caroline chimed in with a snide comment. Kayla was stunned to learn that Stephanie had told Adrienne about the switched paternity tests. Kayla demanded incredulously, "You knew about it and you didn't tell me? Why?" Adrienne replied that Stephanie had asked her not to say anything. Appalled that neither Adrienne nor Caroline seemed to believe their actions were wrong, Kayla maintained that Stephanie's conscience would eventually eat away at her. Adrienne didn't understand why Kayla was so determined to "blow everyone out of the water."

After Adrienne had to leave to take a phone call, Caroline confessed that although she wasn't concerned about what could happen to her if the truth got out, she was worried about everything her family was going through. She begged Kayla to let it go, but Kayla argued that keeping the truth from Philip and Daniel was wrong. "I went to church every day since you left," Caroline said quietly. "I examined and reexamined my conscience. And I feel in my heart that God understands and forgives me." Kayla argued that Caroline wouldn't need to go to church every day if she didn't believe that what she was doing was wrong. "How about this?" Caroline spat. "You stay here and be perfect, and I'll have another talk with God because he actually listens." She stormed out.

Kayla found her mother in the church vestibule, but Caroline was not happy that Kayla had followed her. "Go back to Africa and forget what you know!" Caroline hissed, trying to walk away. Grabbing her mother by the arm, Kayla insisted, "I cannot forget what I know!" Just then, Philip and Melanie opened the doors of the sanctuary, and everyone inside heard Kayla shout, "You have got to tell everybody that Daniel is not the father of Chloe's baby!"

12/30 The doors to the vestibule opened up, and Kayla and Caroline saw the guests shocked faces. Chloe asked what Kayla and Caroline were doing. Daniel demanded to know why Kayla had said that he wasn't Parker's father. Daniel asked Maggie to use his car to take the baby home. Philip suggested that everyone go home. Chloe said she didn't know what was going on. Caroline didn't want to discuss it in front of everyone, but Daniel ordered her to explain herself right there. Philip claimed that Caroline didn't know what she was talking about. Philip tried to usher Caroline out of the church, but she ordered him to get his hands off of her. She explained that it was true that Daniel wasn't Parker's father. Carly interjected that Caroline was wrong. Chloe told Caroline that she was wrong and had to be confused.

Daniel asked who Parker's father was. Kayla suggested that they go to another room. Philip said that what Caroline was saying was crazy and asked if she was trying to settle an old score with Victor. Victor asked Caroline if Philip was right. Caroline said that she wasn't crazy, and the facts couldn't be changed. Caroline admitted that she had gone on the hospital's computer and changed the paternity results. Chloe said she had only undergone a routine amniocentesis. Caroline said that Chloe was lying and that she'd had the test because she'd cheated on Daniel with her old boyfriend and Melanie's husband. "She's right, isn't she?" Daniel demanded to know as he glared at Chloe. Daniel grabbed Philip and punched him.

Daniel tried to beat Philip with a cross, but Melanie stopped him, saying not to do something stupid that would send him to jail. She told Daniel not to make her go through it alone. Daniel put the cross down. Philip reached for Melanie and called her name, but she walked away from him. Carly offered to take Caroline home. Melanie accused Carly of knowing the truth. Victor said that Caroline had lost her mind, and Kayla told Victor never to talk to her mother that way. Carly told Melanie that she hadn't known who the father was. Daniel confronted Carly for knowing about the paternity test. "So you decide that I don't get to know about Melanie, and then you decide that I get to raise another man's son?" Daniel asked. Carly explained that the test results had said that it was Daniel's son. Carly asked Caroline why she had needed to reveal the truth at the christening. Caroline started having head pains. Philip thought that Caroline had changed the paternity results to get back at Victor, but she said she'd done it to protect the baby. Caroline thought no one would ever know the truth. Caroline accused Philip of bullying people to get his way. She admitted that Kayla was right and that she was wrong. Then Caroline collapsed. Daniel asked someone to get his bag and to call 911. Carly offered to help, but Kayla told Carly to "get the hell away from her."

At the hospital, Kayla told Ben how to treat Caroline's medical condition. Kayla asked Ben to make sure that Daniel was taken off of Caroline's case, because it would be a conflict of interest. Ben went to Caroline's room, and Daniel told Ben that Daniel couldn't treat Caroline for personal reasons. Daniel told Kayla how Caroline was doing, and Kayla expressed how sorry she was for what he was going through.

12/31 In a hospital waiting room, Kayla blamed Carly for Caroline's stroke. Carly pointed out that as a doctor, Kayla should know that people didn't have strokes from emotional stress. "Besides, she's no innocent in all this," Carly added. Kayla reluctantly agreed, but noted that it was Carly who had arranged for Chloe's paternity test. Carly started to explain her reasons, but then realized that Kayla had made up her mind to blame Carly for everything. She wondered how Kayla knew so much about the situation. Kayla refused to discuss it, and stormed out. While Victor and Carly listened, Maxine informed Kayla that the doctors were impressed with Caroline's progress.

1/5/11 In Caroline's hospital room, Roman told Kayla that he had to check in with the station. As Roman closed the door, Caroline awakened, and Kayla informed her that Stephanie was on her way there. Caroline became agitated, and struggled to demand, "Tell her stay away!" Kayla begged her mother to calm down. When she learned that Stephanie and Nathan were already en route, Caroline ordered with surprising strength, "Promise me to keep her out of this. Swear you'll keep her out of it!"

In the hallway later, Roman warned Kayla that their mother could be facing serious charges for switching the test results. He admitted that he'd begun to suspect there was more to the story than Caroline was telling them, because he'd learned from Carly that Chloe had used an alias for the paternity test. "How did Ma know that she was taking tests in the first place?" Roman questioned. "How did she even know that paternity was a question? Somebody had to tell her something."

Just then, Stephanie and Nathan arrived. Relieved not to have to answer any more of Roman's questions, Kayla rushed to hug her daughter. Once Kayla and Stephanie could talk privately, Stephanie whispered, "How did this happen?" Kayla replied quietly, "I'm afraid the truth came out, the whole truth." Before Kayla could explain, Maxine interrupted to inform Kayla that the results from Caroline's MRI were back.

1/6 Kayla and Stephanie went to visit Caroline. Kayla told Stephanie that Caroline was "making some great progress." Stephanie was worried about what would happen if Nathan realized that Stephanie had been involved in the paternity cover-up. Kayla believed that Stephanie should have been showing more concern for Caroline's health instead of worrying about how Nathan would react to Stephanie's lies. Kayla realized Stephanie was still planning to keep the truth about Stephanie's involvement in the paternity switch from Nathan. Stephanie warned Kayla not to tell Nathan the truth. "Melanie's left Philip. She's free now, and if Nathan goes back to her because you tell him what I did, I will never forgive you," Stephanie said.

Caroline woke up and overheard Kayla as she told Stephanie to "tell the truth." Caroline became upset with Kayla for continuing to interfere. "When are you going to leave us alone?" she asked as monitors in her room started to beep. Nathan entered to check on Caroline and asked Stephanie and Kayla what had happened. Stephanie lied and told Nathan that she wasn't sure what had caused Caroline to become so agitated. Nathan warned Stephanie and Kayla that Caroline needed to be kept calm. Kayla covered for Stephanie and told Nathan that the events of the christening had upset Caroline again. After Nathan left, Stephanie thanked Kayla for keeping Stephanie's secret, but Kayla wondered if she had made the right decision.

1/7 Kayla called Stephanie from the hospital to discuss Nathan and Stephanie's wedding, as Nathan is eavesdropping outside a slightly open door. Kayla said that when Caroline had heard that Stephanie was planning to postpone the wedding so her grandmother could be there, an upset Caroline had made Kayla promise that Nathan and Stephanie would go ahead and get married the next day. When Kayla offered to do whatever she could to help, a relieved Stephanie told her mom, "You can come over, because I was going to try on my dress." Laughing, Stephanie added that she would appreciate anything that would make her wedding seem "normal and happy." Kayla happily agreed that she would be right there.

When Stephanie hung up and went into the bedroom, Nathan quietly entered the apartment. He went to Stephanie's computer, and snooped through her sent email. "Ian, don't tell anyone what we did. You're the only one who knows," he read aloud, and then muttered to himself, "I knew you were up to something with that guy! I'm gonna find out." When Kayla arrived at Stephanie and Nathan's, she got choked up at the sight of Stephanie in her wedding gown. She declared that Stephanie had been a very sweet baby, and she would be a very sweet bride. Stephanie promised her mom that she was "on the straight and narrow" from that point forward.

1/10 Kayla showed up at the hospital, and Melanie demanded to know why Kayla was there. Kayla said she was there to see Caroline. Daniel tried to calm Melanie, saying that she needed to let stuff go, but she said she couldn't forgive anyone who was dishonest with her and Daniel. He said that being angry and blaming other people didn't work for him. "What does?" Melanie asked, and he said, "Maybe time."

Kayla walked in to confront Carly. Kayla told Carly that she faced felonies for giving a paternity test under "false pretenses" using a false name and DNA unwillingly supplied by Daniel. Carly said she was ready to face the consequences. Kayla said that even if Carly didn't go to prison, she would face a disciplinary hearing at the hospital. When the charges were proven true, Carly would be stripped of her medical license, "and gosh darn it, Bo's shoulder isn't here for you to cry on," Kayla said.

1/11 Stephanie was sobbing when she answered the door at her apartment for her mother. "The wedding's off," Stephanie tearfully informed Kayla. "Nathan left me." Kayla tried to comfort her daughter, but Stephanie believed that Kayla thought it was Stephanie's own fault. Kayla gently insisted that wasn't true, and pulled Stephanie into a hug. "You were just insecure, and you made a couple of mistakes, that's it," Kayla murmured. "If anybody's to blame for this, it is Carly Manning."

1/12 At the hospital, Daniel testified at Carly's hearing. Daniel explained that he had not given Carly permission to test his DNA. When Lexie asked Daniel how Carly had obtained his DNA, Daniel thought about when Carly had swabbed his cheek. "With certainty? No I cannot say with any certainty how she got the DNA she used for that test," Daniel testified. Kayla jumped to her feet and demanded that Daniel explain why he was protecting Carly. When Kayla persisted in arguing with Daniel, Lexie ordered Kayla to remain silent during Daniel's testimony. Unfazed, Kayla accused Daniel of covering for Carly. "I will add that Carly, Dr. Manning, has a habit of going off on her own. Making unilateral decisions that affect other people. Intervening in their lives and not telling anyone about it. Let alone consulting me. She's done it to me, my daughter, and to others. It is a pattern," Daniel said. "The purpose of this hearing is to establish certain facts. If your testimony is that you don't know how Dr. Manning obtained your DNA, then that's all there is," Lexie commented.

Furious, Kayla interrupted and argued that Caroline was under house arrest because of Carly's involvement in Chloe's paternity test. Kayla argued that her family was falling apart because of Carly, and she was worried that the medical board was only interested in whether Carly had obtained Daniel's DNA legally. Lexie explained that her obligation was to establish whether there was an ethical violation and whether Carly would be able to keep her medical license.

After Daniel's testimony was complete, Carly appealed to the board. Carly noted that she regretted assisting Chloe with the paternity test and that she would have told the truth if the paternity results had noted that Daniel was not the father. When Lexie asked Carly if she had any additional comments, Carly apologized to Kayla for all the pain she was suffering and then thanked Lexie for conducting a "fair hearing."

"This matter is open and shut. Lacking proof of malpractice or any ethical violations, there are no tangible grounds on which to recommend to the AMA that Dr. Manning's license be suspended, or to revoke her privileges here at University Hospital," Lexie said. As Lexie adjourned the meeting, Kayla stared daggers at Carly from across the room. Once Lexie was gone, Kayla tore into Carly and told her to leave town. When Carly countered that she could not leave Salem because her daughter was there, Kayla turned to Daniel. "Do you really think she's going to forgive you for what you just did?" Kayla asked Daniel in reference to Melanie.

2/15 At the Brady Pub, Stephanie helped Caroline move back home. While Stephanie went upstairs, Kayla and Caroline chatted. Sami entered the pub with Allie in tow, and greeted her family. As Caroline fussed over Allie, Sami pulled Kayla aside and asked her about Rafe's condition. Kayla warned Sami that there would be a period of adjustment for Rafe but that things would be okay. Kayla told Sami that "patience is the key" because Rafe would probably say things that were out of character for him. "He will be himself again soon," Kayla reassured Sami.

Kayla informed Sami that she was returning to Africa but that Sami could call if she had any questions about Rafe's condition. Stephanie returned from upstairs and told Sami that Allie was making cookies with Caroline. With a chuckle, Sami went to find Allie. Stephanie noted that Sami seemed more relaxed after talking to Kayla, and Kayla said that she wanted to help Stephanie as well. When Kayla asked if Stephanie was still hurting from her breakup, Stephanie confided that she was feeling better. Stephanie assured her mother that she did not need to worry about her daughter.
