DVD #7A 57/22 Kayla convinces Diana to talk to her father for Steve's sake. Jack (Actor #2 in the role, still not Matthew Ashford) tells Steve he'll keep him hidden if he gives up Kayla, but Steve refuses. Kayla meets Steve on patio at Neil’s. Steve plans to break into Kava, but Kayla tells him Diana has agreed to sneak him in.

7/23 Kayla tells Steve they’ve found a way to get him into Kava. An alarm interrupts Diana and Mike’s tour and Steve and Kayla sneak in wearing hazmat suits. Steve and Kayla find pictures of Kai’s transformation into Harper. Steve and Kayla show Diana and Mike the pictures of Kai.

7/24 Kai shows up telling Diana, and S&K that Philip sent him to help her. Jack shows up and says he’s here to help with Steve’s plan to clear his name. Kai poses as Harper as a patient in the hospital to trick Simon. Kai confronts him about setting up Steve and shooting Harper and says Daniels has told the cops as Steve listens behind a curtain. Simon tells Harper that he can’t have him telling tales as Steve jumps out from behind the curtain and tells him it is too late, that he heard everything!

Simon pulls a gun on them and reminds Steve that he has a warrant for his arrest and Harper will simply have a heart attack. Kai tells him it won’t be so easy to kill him and shocks Harper when he peels off the mask as Steve laughs in glee. Simon says he will kill them both right now! Roman bursts into the room and stops Simon from shooting them as Kayla, Diana, and Mike listen in via microphone in the room. Simon threatens if Roman kills him, that he will take Steve down with him. Alice enters bearing flowers and Simon takes her hostage.

7/27 Simon says he will kill himself and Alice before he goes to jail. Steve agrees to help Roman save Alice. Steve saves Alice from Simon and Simon is killed. Kayla tells Steve they are finally free. Steve finds Kayla in her reading glasses and robe and she worries about how she looks. He says it doesn’t matter what she wears or how she looks as they kiss. Steve tells Kayla he has to go to Washington, D.C. to help nail Daniels.

7/29 Kayla tells Melissa patients are often infatuated with their nurses and she wants her to look after Jack for a while so he’ll get over it. Angelica apologizes to Kayla about the things she said about Steve, but then insults him. Kayla is missing Steve while he’s in Washington, DC. Diana tells Kayla what she learned about James and her father.

7/31 Jack plans to propose to Kayla and shows Angelica the ring. Jo sees the ring Jack has and stares at him stunned. We then see Kayla looking at the matching necklace that Steve had given her.

8/3 Kayla tells Shane and Kim about Kai being killed, and it has to do with the disk. Kim then tells Kayla she's pregnant again.

8/4 Steve finally gets to call Kayla, but she’d gone on a walk with Jack. Shane tells Steve about Kai and the disk. Steve finally gets to talk to Kayla. Jo looks at the ring Jack plans to give Kayla, and remembers giving it to Jack's adoptive mother for her son, Billy. Steve turns down Shane's offer to work undercover for the ISA to catch the guys who hired Daniels. Steve is buying a ring for Kayla (missing 1 minute due to cable outage). Kayla tells Jo that she heard from Steve. Shane saves Steve from a mugging and tries to persuade him to change his mind, but he won’t because of Kayla.

8/6 Steve and Shane get back to his place from Washington, and are greeted by Kayla and Kim. Steve tells Kayla he wants Jack to know she is taken. Steve tells Jack to back off Kayla, but he won't listen.

8/7 Steve is getting dressed up for his date with Kayla. He shows Frankie the ring he has for her. Harper wants Steve to come see him. Steve drops by Kayla’s with flowers and tells her he has to go see Harper and then he’ll come back. Harper asks Steve if there could be anyone else involved in the plot to kill him, but Steve doesn’t know. Steve sees Jo with the ring and recognizes it as his mother’s. He questions her about it. Jack shows up and wants to know what Steve is doing with his ring. Steve finds out Jack is his brother.

8/10 Steve returns to Kayla’s visibly upset. Steve holds and kisses her tenderly, obviously so shaken. He tells her he wants to ask her something, but has trouble putting it into words. He observes how many times he pushed her aside but she is still there. Angelica interrupts just as Steve is about to propose. Angelica tells her that Jack is in the hospital and it is urgent. Angelica tells her that he is asking for her and asks for her to come to the hospital. Kayla asks now? Obviously she doesn’t want to leave Steve. She asks him what about tonight? He tells her they will do it another time. He notices she is wearing the necklace he gave her and suggests that she take it off, as it would stand out and Jack would notice Steve’s gift. He says maybe this isn’t a good time, as he blows out the candles on the beautifully set table.

Kayla and Steve arrive at the hospital. Angelica is less than pleased to see Steve. She tells Kayla that Jack is waiting for her. Kayla tells Jack that he has to get better for himself, not for her or anyone else. He tells her that just seeing her pretty face helps him to fight and he will fight to get better so they can start building a life together when he is better. He will have a wonderful future with her, as Steve listens and watches from the door. Kayla is shocked when Steve tells her that she should tell Jack what he wants to hear so he will get better.

Angelica stops her from leaving and tells her that if Kayla accepts Jack that it will push him to get better. Kayla tells her that she can’t pretend to be in love with Jack and she can’t lie. Angelica doesn’t care, she just wants Jack to live. She goes on that he is the kind of person who will make a difference in the world and he needs her love right now. She begs Kayla to think about it.

Steve shows up to talk to Jo about Jack. He tells her that Jack needs chemo as his cancer is advanced and they don’t know if it will work. Jo shakily says, “Billie”! She lost him once and can’t lose him again. She turns to head out to the hospital. Steve stops her and tells her that the Deveraux’s are there. She feels helpless to help him. Steve wants to go get the ring out of Jack’s room. She stops him as she doesn’t want him involved.

Steve gets teary eyed and tells her that is his brother and he will always remember the day they took him away from him at the orphanage. He thinks of him every day and has wondered about him, if he is happy, if he is lonely, if he is hurt. He says that Jack is laying in a hospital and maybe dying, he loves the only woman Steve has every loved and he needs her to get better. Steve asks her how much more involved could he be. Jo tells him that she will get the ring (so he can’t give it to Kayla and so she won’t figure out that he is Billy).

Steve stops by Kayla’s to see if she is alright. She says she is hoping they can pick up where they left off. Steve asks her how Jack is. She tells him that Jack starts chemo tomorrow. He wants to know if she thinks Jack will get better. She is unsure. She wants to know what he wanted to ask her earlier? He says maybe tomorrow. She wants to know if he is going to stay? He says not tonight. He kisses her deeply and then leaves. Steve visits Jack while he sleeps. He sits by his bedside and remembers Billie being taken away from him at the orphanage. He tells a sleeping Jack that he’s going to make sure he gets better.

8/12 Kayla finds Steve in Jack’s hospital room and wants to know why he’s been avoiding her, but he won’t explain. Steve shows up to see Jack in the hospital and finds Jo there. She says they can’t let him die. Steve says Kayla is the only one who can help him get better. Jack tells Steve that if getting sick kept Kayla’s mind off of Steve for a while, then it was worth it. Kayla tells Jo that she thought Steve was going to propose and then Jack got sick and he started acting strange. Jo tells Steve not to tell anyone about Billy and not to push Kayla away for him. Kayla wants to know what’s going on, but Steve pulls away.

8/14 Frankie congratulates Kayla, as Steve comes in stops him from mentioning the ring, as she asks what's going on. Steve tells Frankie he didn't ask Kayla to marry him after all and that marrying her would have been a mistake. Steve gets in a fight with some guys who are bad mouthing Jack.

Kim and Kayla talk about Steve and her confusion. Jo tells Steve that Harper knows who she is and he agrees not to tell Jack that he’s Billy (she does not share that Harper threatened Steve and Adrienne if she did, scene not included). Jo tells Steve that giving Kayla up will only ending hurting everyone, but he won’t listen. Later, Frankie shows up at Steve’s and tells him that if he wants to talk he’s there.

Kayla shows up at his place next and wants to know why Steve is pushing her away and he tells her he was just using her. She slaps him and falls apart crying which breaks his heart. He holds her face and tells her that he doesn’t want to hurt her. He tenderly he kisses her with tears in his eyes, and they make love.

8/17 Steve recites “The Rose” to a sleeping Kayla. Steve tells Kayla that they’re not going to make it. She says she knows he was planning to propose, but he says he changed his mind and can’t be tied down to one woman and that it’s over. He leaves but cries outside. Steve tells Frankie that it’s over between he and Kayla. Kayla talks to her mother about Steve. Kayla asks Caroline if she was the only one who was fooled into thinking that Steve loved her.

Dvd #7B 8/17 Steve flirts with a waitress and later kisses her in front of Kayla. Steve cries when he looks at the engagement ring and says “she’s yours, baby brother.”

8/19 Kayla stops by to see Kim. When Steve shows up, Kim assumes he is there to see Kayla. Shane comes out of the communication room as Kayla and Steve share an uncomfortable stare. Steve tells Shane privately that he agrees to work undercover with Shane and the ISA. Shane is surprised at his change of heart. When Steve comes out of the secret room, he comes face to face with Kayla and another awkward silence ensues. Steve tells Daniels he will change his testimony if he lets him in on the action and Daniels agrees. Steve and Shane meet in the park, and Steve tells him that Daniels took the bait. He also tells him to quit asking about Kayla. Daniels tells Victor about Steve’s offer. Vic observes that he can be bought.

Kayla and Steve bump into each other again at the hospital and get stuck in the elevator together. Kayla realizes he is trying to pretend he doesn’t care but she knows he does after everything they have been through together. He tells her that things have changed between them. She declares that she loves him and she knows he loves her too. He moves towards her, and begins to take her in his arms just as the elevator starts moving again and he pulls away from her.

8/20 Roman and Steve talk about his upcoming testimony. Roman asks him about Kayla, Steve says he’s taking care of Kayla his own way. Kayla goes back to work at the Emergency Center and continues working as Jack’s nurse to keep busy. Kayla tells Adrienne that Steve dumped her. Adrienne finds Steve playing the harmonica on the docks and questions him about his break up with Kayla. She asks him to tell her what is going on? She says she knows how much he cares about Kayla. He tells her to mind her own business.

Roman tells Kayla he thinks he misjudged Steve until she tells him they broke up. Jo comes into the clinic and overhears. She apologizes to Kayla about Steve and says he will come to his senses eventually. Later, Roman punches Steve when he says Kayla was good for a few rolls in the hay. Roman tells him that when this is over that if he so much as sees Steve walking on the same side of the street as his sister there won’t be enough left of him for a body bag.

Jo tries to talk Steve out of dumping Kayla. Kayla runs into Steve and he turns around to walk away. She stops him and tells him that he doesn’t have to avoid her. She doesn’t understand why he is destroying their relationship. He can say that he doesn’t want her anymore, that he doesn’t love her anymore, but she will always love him. She runs up the dock stairs as he sadly looks after her with tears in his eye.

8/21 Steve dreams that Kayla found out the truth about Jack and that they got back together. Jo tells Kayla not to give up on Steve because she knows he loves her. Daniels’ trial begins. Steve lies on the witness stand to get Daniels’ off the hook so he could go undercover for the ISA as Kayla watches in disbelief. Daniels is released and Kayla is furious with Steve.

8/25 Jack leaves the hospital to check on Kayla after Steve’s testimony and tries to cheer her up. Kayla returns Jack to the hospital. Jo tells Steve that Adrienne didn’t come home last night. Jack comforts Kayla about Steve. Victor meets with Steve trying to feel him out about the organization.

Steve finds Kayla in the nurse’s lounge. She tries to leave quickly but he stops her and tells her that he needs to talk to her. This gives her hope that he is going to give her an explanation, over his testimony, over everything he has said to her. He asks her to give him the necklace back. She is shocked and hurt and tells him it is the only thing he ever gave her in their whole time together.

He doesn’t tell her it is so Jack won’t recognize it matches the ring and figure out that he was Jo’s son that she age up for adoption. A broken hearted Kayla says she is probably not the first person he has given it to. He offers to come by later to pick it up. She tells him no that she will make arrangements to get it back to him. Adrienne confronts Steve and wants to know what is wrong with Kayla, after she storms out. She wants to know why Steve lied on the stand and he tells her to butt out. Kayla lays her head on Jack’s shoulder as she cries in her heartbreak.

8/27 Kayla goes to see Jack and he gets her to talk about what's bothering her. Upon his request, Kayla returns Steve's necklace to him and Jack sees this as an opening for him with Kayla. Kayla watches as the waitress looks at the necklace and Kayla thinks he is giving it to her. After she leaves, Steve tells the waitress it still belongs to Kayla. Jack tries to comfort Kayla over Steve.

Angelica tells Steve to stay away from Jack when she finds him in Jack’s room. He tells her to let Jack know he can have Kayla. Jo wants Steve to keep the necklace so he can give it to Kayla one day, but Steve says that day will never come. Jack is trying to move in on Kayla. Jo and Steve talk about Kayla helping Jack get better and Steve says he has no choice, but to let Kayla go to save Billy.

8/28 Max finds Steve at Shenanigan’s and tells Steve that Frankie is missing. Steve promises he will find Frankie. Mike tells Kayla that Jack’s treatments are not working and that she is what is keeping him from giving up. Alice enters the Brady’s Fish Market looking for Jennifer who also didn’t come home all night. Steve brings Max home as they are talking. After assuring the ladies, he heads out to look for Frankie and Jennifer.

He returns later and reports that a friend of his saw Jennifer hanging out with a real low life guy, real bad news. His friend is out looking for a lead and will call the Fish Market when he gets any info. Steve is about to head out when Kayla asks him to stay. She points out that his friend will want to talk to him. Obvious she just wants to be near him, and also knows he is the best person to help find Frankie.

Shawn has called Roman for help. Steve wants to know why Kayla isn’t with Jack? She reports he was going for testing this morning. Roman comes in and wants to know what Steve is doing there and tells him to take a hike. Kayla tells him that Max wanting Steve to find Frankie. Just as Steve is leaving, his friend calls with info. Steve tells them she is with Nick and asks Roman to get an address. Roman had told them to stay away from Nik. Alice comes in with a bag with an address in Jennifer’s hand writing. Roman recognizes it and heads out.

8/31 Melissa calls Kayla about Jack's condition and says he’s calling for her. Steve comes back into the Fish Market to see if there was any news about the kids. Steve and Kayla argue again. Diana comes in and is puzzled by Steve’s attitude. Kayla and Diana talk about their problems and Diana asks to move back into Kayla’s and she agrees.

Later at the PD, Diana questions Steve about his testimony, but he refuses to answer any questions. Steve goes into see Jennifer and Frankie and lectures them about trying to break up a prostitution ring on their own and how dangerous that was. Frankie defends that they were trying to save their friend, Sasha. Montage to “Unchained Melody” as Kayla sits by a sleeping Jack’s bedside, thinking about Steve while a somber Steve is standing in the rain alone.

9/2 Angelica questions Steve about his visits to Jack. Angelica wants Steve to stay away from Jack. Jack comforts Kayla about Kim and Steve. Jack asks Steve why he dumped Kayla? Steve responds that he got tired of her, which prompts Jack to attack him. Kayla enters the room, shocked to see Jack attacking Steve and yells at him to stop it. She follows Steve outside and warns him to stay away from Jack that he will be better off without Steve in his life. He agrees that she is right about that and slowly walks away as they yearn for each other. When Jo shows up at Steve’s door, he tells her that he was convincing with Jack about why he broke up with Kayla and now she belongs to Billy. He cries and Jo comforts him. Jack tells Kayla that he is going to live so he can be with her.

9/4 Steve continues to pretend he’s moved on from Kayla and puts on a show with a girl in front of Kayla. Max overhears Kayla telling Caroline that Steve uses people. He gets upset and goes to see Steve. Steve confronts Kayla about badmouthing him in front of Max. She says she did no such thing and how dare he accuse her of this, as Max is listening in on their conversation. Max comes running in and says that he heard Kayla telling her mama about Steve. He is worried that he and Steve can’t be friends as Kayla is his sister now. Kayla says even though but she says she didn’t know Max was listening.

Steve and Shane meet about his undercover assignment with Daniels [cuts out last part of scene where Steve says it’s too late for him and Kayla]. Melissa tells Steve she knows he and Kayla still love each other (she has a crush on Jack). Steve responds that he is doing the right thing letting her go. Jack asks Kayla to marry him.

9/7 Kayla tells Jack she needs time to think about his proposal. Angelica tells Kayla that Jack told her he proposed to her, and she pressures Kayla to accept. Kayla tells Mike she is torn about Jack’s proposal because she doesn’t love him, but worries he will die if she doesn’t give him something to live for.

9/8 Steve refuses to talk to Frankie about Kayla, but gives him advice about Jennifer. Victor gives Daniels his instructions for Steve and then waits out of sight as Steve arrives at Daniel’s room. Steve tells Daniels he wants in the organization. Daniels tells Steve he has been accepted into the organization and Steve wants to meet the boss and get his assignment. Adrienne tries to talk to Steve about Kayla.

9/9 Roman arrives at Kayla’s door bearing a large bouquet of flowers. Kayla wants to know what he wants since he is bribing her with gifts. He admits they aren’t from him, he found them on her doorstep. She reads the card and tells Roman that they are from Jack and tells him about his proposal. She is considering it as he does need something to live for.

Roman asks if she loves him? She admits she hasn’t answered him, as she doesn’t care about him the way she does Steve. He asks if she could be happy with Jack? She says maybe, as she does care about him. Harper tries to manipulate Kayla into marrying Jack. Melissa questions Kayla about Jack’s proposal. Kayla tells Jack needs more time to think about his proposal.

9/10 Steve saves Justin from a hit man who takes a shot at him. Steve tells Adrienne that Justin comes from a dangerous family and she should stay away him. Shawn runs into Steve on the docks and observes that Kayla has been miserable past few weeks and wants to know if Steve had something to do with that? Steve tells him that he broke up with her. Shawn tells him that he is glad he and Kayla broke up, but he wonders if it is really over? Steve tells him it is over and Shawn is relieved. They both agree that they do not want to see Kayla hurt. Steve sits on the docks thinking about Kayla, and holding his mother’s ring (the one she stole from Jack).

9/11 Kayla come to see Steve and tells him about Jack’s proposal. She waits for a response, hoping this will get through to him. He congratulates her and reminds her that she will get everything she ever wanted, a big church wedding, a big house and a family with a husband who will come home to her every night. She sadly says that it really is over between them. He tells her congratulations and with tears in her eyes she turns to walk away. As she does, he whispers, “I love you baby.” She hears him say something, but he denies it.

A sad Kayla sits alone in the park. Kayla daydreams that Steve asks her if she gave Jack her answer yet and calls her Sweetness? He admits that he loves her and then tells her she can’t marry Jack. He asks her to be his wife and slips the engagement ring on her finger. He holds her and kisses her deeply. Jo tells Steve that Jack wants to give Kayla her ring, but he says Kayla can’t see it or she will know the truth about Billy. Kayla tells Kim about Jack’s proposal. Jo tells Jack the ring is missing, but she assures him that it was just misplaced and she is sure that he will find it. He ask Melissa to go to the jewelers to get him a few rings to choose from.

Roman, Abe, Shane and Steve are at the PD to set up their plan. They arrange for Daniels to overhear a conversation between Shane and Roman, to make Daniels think Roman believes he is innocent and Shane vows to get him. Daniels meets with Victor and feels him in that Shane is getting suspicious and is onto Victor and Daniels. He then shares that Roman has refused to help Shane with his investigation. Daniels tells Steve he has an assignment. Steve calls Shane and tells him that he needs to meet with him right away.

Kayla runs into Steve and he asks if she has given Jack her answer yet? She shares that she was on her way to see him. She turns to go and he stops her, giving her hope once again. He just says to tell Jack, “Hi”. Disappointing her once again. Steve tells Shane that they want him to kill Shane.

9/14 Steve and Shane discuss his assignment to kill Shane. Shane wants him to complete his assignment, but Steve refuses to kill him, he won’t go down that road again. Shane tells him to lie low for a couple of days. He wants him to tell Daniels that he discovered Shane is having an affair and he has proof that Shane was giving up ISA secrets for sex. Shane assures Steve that ISA will assign an appropriate agent to play the role of his girlfriend.

Kayla accepts Jack’s proposal. Thrilled he kisses her, though obvious her heart isn’t in it. Jack is happy to share the good news with Angelica when she comes in his hospital room. Kayla tells her family she has agreed to marry Jack. Kayla follows Roman down the docks after Diana has saved Cari from drowning. They are both taken to the Fish Market to warm up. Caroline apologizes to Kayla and says they will celebrate her engagement another day, though Caroline is concerned about Kayla’s decision. Steve runs into Kayla on the dock and sees her engagement ring. He congratulates her, saying he hopes she will be happy.
