Luke, Holly & Robert #18 - 8 hrs Ruby shows up at the Star to see if Robert has heard from Luke. She is terribly worried and tells Robert she knows she should have told Robert when she saw Luke hiding out at GH. Robert understands that she was trying to help Luke. Tiffany shows back up at the bus station and learns from the bus driver that Luke and Holly got off in Coletown. Luke and Holly are in jail in Coletown after being arrested when Luke punched out a cop after he kept hitting on Holly. She points out that at least they don't know who they are. The cop releases them and relieved they take off. Luke and Holly arrive in Albany but can't find any vacant hotels. Luke finally bribes a desk clerk into getting a room at a seedy hotel. Luke has Holly call Mrs. Van Gelder and arranges to meet with Mr. Van Gelder the next day as he is returning from his trip. Robert plots to distract Burt and Tiffany calls Robert pretending to be Holly. She arranges to meet with Robert at the Webber’s; of course Burt falls for it as she sounds exactly like Holly. Robert knows that the police will head over to the Webber's leaving him free to head to Coletown. Holly calls her father and is relieved to hear her father's voice and that he is okay. Her father pleads with her to ditch Luke and get back to Port Charles immediately. He informs her that she can say she was kidnapped and that will cover her absence with the family. She tells him she is so confused and doesn't know what to do. He tells her the family is beginning to lose confidence in her and urges her again to hurry home. Basil and Reginald come downstairs and Charles cuts the call short. Luke tries to call GH to check on Dan's condition. Amy recognizes his voice and calls out that it is Luke on the phone and he immediately hangs up. Luke is wrapped in a towel after his shower, when Holly comes out of the shower still wrapped in her towel, Luke tells Holly that he cares about her and he would never let anything hurt her. He begs her to trust him and tell him the truth. She avoids it and tells him that he talks too much. She pulls him close and begins kissing him. He pulls away and tells her to get some sleep that they have to leave for Van Gelder's early in the morning. Luke believes he will finally get the answers he is searching for from Van Gelder. Robert and Tiffany show up in Coletown to pick up on Luke and Holly's trail from there. The cop tries to pick up on Tiffany; Robert gets hostile while Tiffany flirts with the guy. He mentions the wimpy guy he had to slap around last night when he had to run him in. Robert is shocked to hear this joker is a cop! They get him to describe the couple he ran in and realize they were Luke and Holly and they missed them by one day! Robert is sure they are headed to Rochester to see Van Gelder but think it will still be a couple of days before he returns home. Tiffany brings him breakfast from Kelly's and he reminisces about how they met on the island and how good they were together. When they check out of the hotel, Luke is charged for a phone call to Port Charles that he didn't make. He gets the number and realizes that Holly made the call. She tells him she called Jackie just to talk. He says that isn't Jackie's phone number and then she says it is her private office number. He has called Jackie at work many times and she doesn't have a private number that he has always had to go through the switchboard and its odd that the newspaper isn't answering the phone. On the airplane, Luke continues to ask Holly to tell him the truth and wants to know who she was calling. He suggests it was Edward, the Corso's, the guy from the bank, or maybe Harper? He asks her to tell him before he finds out the truth on his own, as he will! He tells her that he is giving her the chance to be straight with him, to come clean. She asks why should she when he is keeping her a virtual prisoner. She tells him that she can't take much more of this. He tells her that it is amazing the trust he has put in her and the trust that she doesn't put in him. He warns her that he will keep calling that phone number until he reaches someone and finds out who she was trying to call. Holly and Luke arrive at the Van Gelder home and are told that he died very suddenly of unexpected heart failure. His grieving widow shows Luke a picture of him and as soon as she leaves the room, Luke whirls on Holly and declares that was NOT the man who told them they had oil but then she already new that! Luke surmises that someone set up a look alike to convince him that there was oil and then killed him and that Dan found out about the scam and was stabbed so he couldn't relay the information to Luke! Holly still doesn't tell him the truth and as she looks over and sees Oliver in the gathering of those who have come to pay their respects to Mrs. Van Gelder, she freezes up and wants to leave immediately. He is curious that she wants to leave before he gets the information. She honestly tells him at this moment she is actually looking out for Luke (trying to protect him from her family's vengeance as he is now dispensable). She spills coffee over Oliver, and as everyone fusses over him, she grabs Luke and pulls him out the door with her. They hide out in the garage and Luke demands to know who that guy was and why did they have to get away from them, what does he have to do with them? Holly pleads that spilling her coffee was just an accident. When Luke doesn't buy that, she tells him it was an ex-boyfriend who followed her. He believes this even less and snarks this guy has better contacts that the FBI and tells her this is the tallest story anyone has ever tried to feed him. After the guests have left, they back to see Mrs. Van Gelder. She recognizes them from the news accounts of Luke kidnapping Holly and Holly assures her that is not the case. She tries to brush them off really not up to deal with Luke's questions. His desperation gets through and she lets him in. She tells him that he had an appointment for an oil survey in Port Charles but the person cancelled the appointment at the last moment. He then received a phone call telling him that she had been injured in a car accident and sent him off on a wild goose chase. Luke tells her he had nothing to do with that and that he had been set up. She tells him that the man he saw in Port Charles was not her husband. Luke then asks her if she knows a Phillip Harper? She says yes that is a respected geologist. He is trying to figure out a link with Harper and asks if he has been in trouble and Mrs. Gelder says no that he was a fine man who had some personal problems. Upon further probing, she tells Luke that Harper had a run of bad luck with the stock market and he lost all of his money and some of his wife's and that she left him. Luke realizes that his financial problems make him a candidate to be bribed. Luke then asks if her husband had a history of heart trouble and she says no. Luke recommends that she had an autopsy done on her husband. Luke indicates that he thinks that perhaps someone felt her husband was in their way and urges her again to get the autopsy. She asks them to stay the night and Luke agrees though Holly cries no and says that she can't stay and runs out of the room. Basil worries when he is told that Robert has requested photos on the fingerprints that Dan had submitted are being sent to Robert and Joe. Basil decides to head to The Star that night to see what the gang is up to. He finds them going through a group of about 11 photographs trying to see if they recognize anyone. Basil realizes one of the pictures is of Charles while wearing a beard. When he sees Dante enter, Basil realizes he will recognize the photo of Charles with a beard as he had treated him when he was wearing a beard. Panicked, Basil pushes a waiter with a tray of chocolate desert onto the table and he spills it all over the photos. The next day, Robert and Joe meet and Robert shows him that one of the pictures is missing. Robert reports he is having a new set of pictures sent to him and they will have to really study the one missing! Steve calls and tells Joe that Dan is improving but not yet out of the woods. Then Charles calls and asks to meet with Joe. Reginald reports to Basil and Charles that he has paid off Harper and sent him on an extended vacation to keep him out of the way. Basil makes excuses that he has to meet with someone but remains very mysterious, as he knows the family is opposed to the use of violence. Basil has payed a couple of people to create a distraction in the hallway down from Dan's room, which draws away security from Dan's door. Robert enters the hallway and realizes this could be a distraction and immediately heads to Dan's room, gun drawn. Basil is just slipping out of his hiding spot and he sees Robert and sneaks out a fire exit. Luke continues to try to call the number Holly called from the hotel and its continually busy as Basil is on the phone. Finally he does an emergency interrupt and gives Holly's name. Once the operator has Basil on the line, she asks for the name again and Luke repeats, "Holly Sutton" and Basil hangs up. They all sweat that Luke has this number and feel that Holly has turned on them, as that is the only way Luke could have the number. They determine they can't answer that phone until they get an answering service to screen all calls. Charles points out that Luke could have gotten the phone number from Holly's purse and he doesn't believe she would cooperate with Luke and insists her loyalty is to her family. Mrs. Van Gelder tells Burt that Luke and Holly had been there to see her. She reports that Mr. Van Gelder never did the oil survey as the appointment was cancelled and he was called away with an erroneous report of her being in the hospital. Burt also urges her to get an autopsy and tells her about Dan's stabbing back in Port Charles. She doesn't believe for a second that Luke would have anything to do with her husband's death. Luke and Holly next go to Harper's and not only find him gone but looks like he left in a hurry. As Luke looks around, he finds Holly's mystery phone number lying on Harper's desk. Luke wants answers, he grabs her and shakes her and demands to know who she is working for? He forces her to call the number and tell them she is alone and she needs to talk to them. Reginald comes in and holds them at gunpoint and she hangs up the phone. Luke jumps him and they fight and toss each other around pretty good, the gun is dropped in the process. He really throws Luke up against a wall (I'm surprised the set wall held!). Holly picks up the gun. Rattled, Reginald runs off. Luke wants to know why Holly didn't the turn the gun on him when she had the chance? He is annoyed that she tried to help him and he shouts that he can fight his own battles. Their voices get heated and they start shouting at each other. A neighbor calls the police and a cop hears them shouting about a gun and comes in with his gun drawn. They talk their way out of it saying they are honeymooners and say that they had the TV up loud. They realize they have to get out of there quickly. Burt goes to see Robert and Joe and shocks them with the news of that Mr. Van Gelder is dead! Robert knows Luke well enough to realize that since he has been to see the Van Gelders and next he will set off to the Harpers. Mrs. Van Gelder calls Burt and tells him about Luke asking about Mr. Harper. Burt writes down the info and takes off to follow this new lead. Burt shows up at Harper's and asks the young cop where Harper's apartment is? He says that he took care of the disturbance. A frustrated Burt says that he is a homicide detective from Port Charles and working on a murder case. They enter Harper's apartment and find it trashed after the fight. The cop describes Luke and Holly and Burt realizes he just missed them again! Robert soon shows up and Burt jumps to the conclusion that Luke has killed Harper. Robert can't believe that Burt is jumping to this conclusion and blaming Luke and declares this isn't even good circumstantial evidence. Luke and Holly stop by to pick up some groceries, not realizing that Oliver has followed them. Holly tries to get Luke to tell her where they are headed and points out that she has stood by him through all of this. Luke tells her that they are going to head back to Mystery Mountain. He warns her they will hide out until she tells him everything. He tells her that he planned on staying away until he could figure this out and clear his name but now he knows she is in on it. He tells her that he plans on going back to Port Charles and turning himself in and that he will be going to the police and telling them everything! She is horrified and tells him that he will be arrested. He says he will get to the bottom of this, return all of the money to the investors and clear his name. She tears up as she tells him that she never meant to hurt him. As they leave the store, Oliver calls home and tells them that they are headed back to Mystery Mountain and to get a very large net ready to swoop them up. Dan wakes up and wants to get a message to Luke though he can barely talk. Dante gets word to Robert who heads right over. Robert asks Dan what the message is for Luke and Dan can barely manage to mumble, "Springbok" though Robert has no idea what this means. Luke and Holly arrive back at their storeroom hideout at the amusement park. Luke is looking weary at continually trying to figure out this mystery. She wants to leave and he says why, so her boyfriend can knife him in the back? Luke tells her they aren't going anywhere until he gets answers as he will not continue to run around like a rat in a maze not knowing who the enemy is. She runs out and he chases her through the park, finally catching her. She spots Basil and says they have to get out of there. It clicks for Luke that he is part of it and he follows her lead and they take off on the run. Basil spots them and gives chase. Luke and Holly jump on a roller coaster ride (the Colossus at Magic Mountain), Basil right behind them. When they get off the ride, there is a big chase scene through the park, Luke and Holly are able to elude them by running under the support beams of the roller coasting and hiding, they then slip back into their storage area. Luke ties her up and tells her has to get reinforcements that he needs to call Robert. Knowing Robert's phone is bugged; Luke calls Benny the fence and asks him to get a message to Robert. He returns to further question Holly about her relationship to the Corsos and what Dan found out. Luke figures that it was a swindle and it was all a lie including her part in it. She tells him that she loves him and her feelings for him are not a lie. Holly finally agrees to tell him the truth that meeting him was not a coincidence that it was all arranged before they even met. They planned to extort millions of dollars from the people of Port Charles and that the oil strike was a phony, there was never any oil. She was assigned the job of convincing him that it was true. She tells him about her family of con artists. She tells him that he was selected because he was a well-known figure in town and was trusted and people would want to invest with him. She says that Reginald is not an old boyfriend but her cousin. She continues about buying the land at an auction and that the land was deeded to her father. He doesn't seem to be too surprised to learn her father is alive but he is surprised to learn that Charles Corso is actually Charles Sutton, her father. She tells him that he was the hardest person that her family has ever tried to con. She continues that they hired a phony Van Gelder, and then bribed Barker, and the foreman was also on their payroll. She swears she wanted out almost before it began as she began developing feelings for him. He doesn't want to hear her protestations of her love. He does want to know who killed Van Gelder? She believes it was probably Oliver but she doesn't understand it as her father and Reginald never condoned violence and wouldn't use it. He asks what about Al Barker, did they have him killed as well? She swears if so that her father had nothing to do with it. He asks about Dan and who through the knife into his back. She says she doesn't know, Luke says he does and it was Basil! Luke tells her that he saw Basil at the hospital trying to make another attempt on Dan's life. She tells him about her father's illness and that Basil could have been at the hospital on his behalf. She tells him about Dante having treated her father in the past. She warns Luke that they will now kill Luke if they find him. Holly tells him now that her loyalty isn't just to her father but to Luke as well. She begs him to believe how much she loves him as she will be lost if he doesn't forgive her. She says she will do anything for him to believe her, she says she will return with him even if it means she will go to prison. Luke doesn't understand how he can love her and hate her at the same time. Luke tells her he called Robert and he is going to turn himself in. She vows she will return with him and be at his side. Holly cries that she will do anything to earn his trust and his love. He grudgingly tells her that she has his love, though obviously trust is going to be harder. Holly snuggles up next to him and reminds him this might be their last night together for a long time and asks him to put it all aside and be with her. He grabs her and kisses her. The next morning, they tell each other how much they love each other. He tells her they started this together and they will end this together. He is trying to understand her motivation, that she did it for her father and her family. He does understand being willing to do anything to protect his family. She asks him about Bobbie and his relationship with his sister (Jackie is off the show at this time). #18B Robert returns to town and tells Jackie and Tiffany that Springbok is a ghost town, that there was a gold rush there about 10 years ago and when the gold ran out all of the people left. They tell Robert that Luke left a message with Benny for Robert but Benny won't give them the message. Burt has a couple of cops there to meet him but Robert arrived on a charter flight so that Burt couldn't track him. Tiffany spots the cops and her and Jackie agree to create a distraction so that Robert could head out undetained. Burt has arrested Tiffany and Jackie and Joe can't believe Burt intends on holding them. Burt wants information on where Robert and Luke are. Both ladies refuse to give any information and threaten to write an expose on police brutality. Tiffany is irate and determined to do whatever she can to help Luke. Robert arrives at Benny's who tells him Luke wants to meet him in the amphitheatre at 12:00. Holly is so relieved now that Luke knows the truth; she feels such a weight lifted. She tells him that she has wanted to tell him about she had to protect her father. He tells her that he does love her and its very hard for him to realize that she tried to use him. He also points out that when the scam started to unravel that continue to try to play it out and he doesn't understand if she really does love him why did she wait so long to tell him the truth? She says she was also trying to protect Luke as if he knew the truth it would put him at risk as well. He scoffs at that as she had to know after the money was embezzled that they would come after Luke as his name is also on the account. Luke and Holly head over to the amphitheatre to meet up with Robert. Unfortunately, Basil and Oliver decide to search the theatre as Luke and Holly hide upstairs in a production booth. When they are satisfied that Basil and Oliver have left, they re-enter the theatre to wait for Robert and head back up to the top of the theatre to wait for Robert. Holly hits a button on the sound table and Basil and Oliver hear it from outside and come running back in as Luke and Holly hide. Basil grabs Holly though she gets away and climbs a ladder as Basil follows her. Oliver tackles Luke though Robert arrives just in time to pull him off of Luke. Luke follows Basil up the ladder. Holly throws down a rope from the scaffolding above and shimmies down it as Luke calls out for her to be careful. Oliver knocks Robert out and is there waiting to capture Holly as she descends. As Luke begins to climb down the rope, Basil cuts it from above, sending Luke crashing to the bleachers below and is knocked unconscious. Holly is taken captive by her family. Robert tries to stop them but Basil punches him and sends him flying back down the bleachers. Oliver and Basil usher her out of the theatre. Luke is rushed to GH while Holly is reunited with her father. She tells him that they hurt Robert and Luke and she doesn't know how badly. Charles is sorry that he brought her into this. Holly refuses to sign the check and tells them to go ahead and shoot her though she knows they won't do that, as they need her to get the money. Oliver then threatens to kill Charles if she doesn't cooperate. Holly agrees to his terms though Charles tries to stop her and tells her not to do it on his behalf. He tells her he has been a fool, that she can have her integrity and real love and she doesn't need this family. Oliver warns her that if she follows her that they will all profit and if she doesn't her father will die! She agrees though she says she will never forgive them and she will spend the rest of her life making them both pay for what they have done. Basil gloats that with Spencer and Robert out of the way that there is no one to stop them. They arrive at the bank and Holly hesitantly signs the check though the bank manager is puzzled that it is only made out for $20,000 and not the $2 million they had requested. Holly claims she is just tired and sorry she made such a silly mistake. She is sorry she messed up the check and now they won't be able to withdraw the money. Oliver has anticipated such a move and has blank checks with him and has her write out another check. Robert wakes up and finds himself chained to his hospital bed and does his best to get free. Jackie comes in and tells him about the Corsos running off with the money and taking Holly with them. Burt comes in to question Robert. He tells Burt that the Corsos are crooks and he tried to kill both him and Luke. Burt is holding out his judgment about Luke's possible involvement, Robert is indignant that Burt won't accept Robert's explanation that Luke was not involved in the scam. Dr. Dante comes into examine Robert and winds up identifying Charles Corso as Charles Sutton, Holly's father! Robert determines that Charles Sutton and their family engineered the oil scam. Burt goes into question Luke and he insists that her family pressured Holly and that she obviously tried not to cooperate by ruining the first check. Burt believes she is in on it as she did write the check of her own freewill and has skipped out with the rest of her family. Luke believes that her father's illness was used to pressure her into cooperating. Tiffany, Jackie, and Laura T. sneak into see him bearing huge bouquets of flowers (visitors have been banned after an older woman came in and reamed Luke for her and her friends losing their life savings). The girls are really very understanding about Holly's involvement; especially Tiffany who has hocked her jewels and her interest in the Star is on the line. They don't believe Holly would have willingly swindled her friends, as she just doesn't seem like that kind of person. Luke is desperate to hear from Holly and waits for word from her. Jackie is determined to search to the penthouse, as she is sure Holly would try to get a message to Luke. Holly does try to mail a letter from the train station but Basil is onto her and takes the letter. Dan finally wakes up and insists that he see Luke. Dr. Dante calls Burt and tells him that Dan is awake and asking to talk to Luke. Burt arrives and gets Dan's statement and he adamantly states that Luke did not stab him. Dan tells them that he was at the Star that night that he found out that Charles Corso was really Charles Sutton, Holly's father. He continues to inform them that Charles had bought the land six months before Holly arrived. Dan says that when he learned this that he remembered hearing about a similar scam in Springbok (a former mining town that the Durbins discovered gold on). Luke asks Dan where he thinks they may have gone and he is sure it would be the UK. Burt assures them that their sources have not turned up anything in the UK. Robert calls the Star to tell everyone the good news that Dan woke up. They are in the middle of rehearsal for the evenings charity benefit for the Sport's Center and we get to hear Tiffany sing. Luke is released and when he returns to the Star he finds Sammy Davis Jr. sitting in his room, okay he finds Brian's father sitting in his room. They have a conversation and Sammy tells him he is sorry, as he has heard about Luke's troubles. Classic moment as Luke declares he is the most famous performer at the Star! Sammy heads up to perform and we hear Sammy sing, Afterwards, Luke talks to Sammy on deck then wanders around after everyone has left at lose ends. Suddenly he remembers Holly talking about her Scottish nanny making her tea while at her uncle's house in Victoria, Canada and Luke grins in triumph! We see the Durbins arrive at their Vancouver town home. Luke runs in and tells Robert and they both run out and in the next scene arrive at the beautiful Empress hotel in a horse drawn carriage. Luke is sure that Holly is in Vancouver but he isn't able to find any phone listing so doesn't know where to start looking for her. He suggests they go to the police but insists they not give up any information. Great location shots as they walk through the city. Robert tells the cop that he is with the WSB but this is an unofficial investigation about a swindle. He adds that the name of the swindlers may be Durbin or Dunham? The officer is quite insistent that it couldn't possibly be Durbin as they are a very wealthy and prominent family with a home in Durban's Square. He rattles on about the family, Percy, and Holly, ect. He suggests that Robert stick with the Dunham angle, as it couldn't possibly be the Durbin's. Luke and Robert thank him for his assistance, leave his office and declare, "Bingo!" Luke sees Holly on a bus and cries out her name. By the time he gets off the bus, she has disappeared. He and Robert head to Durbin Square though Robert would prefer to call in the police. Luke and Robert arrive at the Durbin's and meet with Percy, the head of the family (Basil's father, Holly's uncle). Percy claims not to have seen Holly for years and insists that he has never even heard of Port Charles. Luke accuses his family of being a band of cutthroats, murderers, and thieves. He tries to head upstairs to look for Holly but two goons intercede blocking the staircase. Percy tells one of the goons that Luke is just leaving and asks him to escort him out. Luke has picked up Holly's purse from a nearby table and comments on it. Percy warns him that if he returns that he will have Luke arrested. Luke promises Percy that he has not seen the last of him and promises to bring down his empire to a pile of rubble. As Luke and Robert walk down the street, Holly and Basil return from shopping. Holly sees the guys and seems about to call out to them. Basil covers her mouth and ushers her inside before the guys see her. Percy is furious with Basil and criticizes that once he knew Dan Rooney was onto them that they should have immediately left town. Basil smirks that he doesn't give up that easily. Percy says that he has placed them all in grave danger of being sent to prison for murder! Robert reports back to Luke that the Durbins arrived with regular luggage, nothing that would hold $2 million dollars. Robert suggests that the money is being sent separately. Robert asks Jackie to find out if Burt was able to trace the money after it left Port Charles and how it was shipped. Robert distracts the guard outside a gentleman's club so that Luke can sneak in. Robert gets Basil's knife away from him and says that the next time he sees him that he will be using the blade! Basil says he looks forward to it and urges Robert to bring along some help, as he will need it. Luke confronts Percy again and flashes Holly's credit card that he found. Percy counters that it must have been lost or stolen and he will have it returned to her when he sees her. Percy demands that Luke leave immediately. Basil comes in and Luke punches him out. After Luke leaves, Percy demands that Basil take care of Luke and to get him away from Victoria and then get rid of him. He warns him that if he doesn't handle this one correctly that Basil will regret it! Luke and Robert move to a location next door to Percy's business office in order to keep tabs on him. Holly sees Luke outside and her father immediately picks up on her distress. He tells her he is dissapointed for trying to decieve him. She begs him to allow her to see Luke, just for five minutes. He refuses and sends her to her room and insists that he is doing it for her own good. Charles tries to tell Holly that Luke is only there to retrieve the money. She doesn't believe that as Luke told her over and over how much he loves her. He warns her that Robert is with Luke and if he brings in the Canadian authorities that they are finished. She just wants to talk to Luke, he urges her to accept that there is no future for her with Luke. Robert tells Luke that Jackie found out a steamer trunk was picked up from the Durbin's NY apartment. Luke is sure that is where they money is and that the trunk is on it's way to Vancouver. Percy tells Basil to have the trunk delivered to the country house as they can't have it delivered to the Durbin Square house with Luke and Robert hanging around. Luke heads down to the docks to start looking around as he suspects that the steamer trunk will be delivered by ship not by airplane. |
