Luke, Holly & Robert #20 December 24, 1982 - February, 1983 20A Luke, Robert, Holly, Jackie, Tiffany, Ruby, Dan, and Bobbie have Christmas dinner together. Luke takes Holly out on deck for a moment alone. He is completely broke but tells her that this will be one of the best Christmas’ ever! He can’t afford to give her much of a present and she assures him that she doesn’t need anything ever, she is so happy to be free. He remembered when she told him about her holiday traditions involving putting a sixpence in the baking for good luck. He got a sixpence from Nanny and had it split in half and made two necklaces out of it, one for her and one for himself. Jackie and Robert are enjoying the morning in bed when Robert gets an urgent call to come meet with the mayor. Luke and Holly are getting ready to leave for Canada and Luke gets a call that there is a potential offer on the Star but he has to meet with the broker today. Luke asks Holly to make arrangements for a later flight and he will make the meeting. Holly and Nanny talk about her mother’s death and how she promised to bury her father next to her mother. They also discuss Oliver and Basil, as Holly is sure they are vindictive and will want revenge against her. Percy refuses to allow her to have Charles buried in the family plot due to the embarrassment he has brought on the family. She tells him he has been lying for so long that he has started to believe his own lies. He tells her they will decide it when she arrives. After she hangs up, Nanny is worried about her seeing Percy that he will try to hurt her. She isn’t worried about him that he will make a deal to bury Charles in the plot in return for her promise of silence. Holly gets a call from the airline that her later flight was cancelled due to the ice storm however there is one flight out in an hour if she can make that. Holly tries to reach Luke but when she is unable to she tells Nanny they have to leave immediately for the airport. Holly leaves Luke a note. The mayor offers Robert a job as the police commissioner. He turns it down initially, though the mayor doesn’t accept his no. He tells him that he is very unhappy with the DA’s recent behavior and tells Robert that he needs a strong commissioner to keep the DA in line and go head to head with him. This possibility intrigues him, as does the salary and the perks the mayor offers. He assures Robert that this will not be a desk job that his primary job will be investigating which is Robert’s strength. Luke returns back to the Star and finds Holly’s note. He is worried that Percy will kill Holly! He rushes off to the airport with Robert and Jackie in tow. Luke is unable to get a flight out due to the storm. Percy agrees to allow Charles to be buried in the family plot in return for Holly’s signature on an affidavit swearing that Percy had no knowledge or collusion in the Oil Scam plot. Holly is torn over doing this and discusses it with Nanny. Holly very much wants to see her father buried with her mother and have the peaceful final resting spot he deserves but the thought of Percy going free is a very high price to pay. She finally agrees after he threatens to bury her father in the weed filled Potter’s Field. She finally gets through to a very worried Luke (who has been stranded in Port Charles due to the continuing storm). She assures him that she is fine and she will be home right after the funeral. He wants to head up there as he wants to be with her but she says no that she plans on coming right home. Luke can tell there is something wrong but they get cut off (Holly is upset about the deal she made with Percy and doesn’t want Luke involved). Luke and Robert plan a New Year’s Eve last bash party on the Star. Tiffany is upset over the break up with Noah (he is back to seeing Bobbie). Robert decides to play matchmaker and insists Noah attend the party as they want to thank him for putting up the money for Holly’s bail and for helping them pay the mortgage on the Star. Holly returns home and Luke is angry with her for leaving without him. He wants an explanation that she couldn’t wait for him to go with her as she could have been killed. She explains about wanting to make sure her father was buried next to her mother and she did what she went there to do, bury her father! He wants to talk now. She begs off that she wants to rest and unpack and dodges his questions. Later, he resumes his questioning and while she answers truthfully she leaves out the part of the deal she made with Percy. Luke senses that she is withholding and accuses her of lying to him that he feels like back in the amusement park when she dodged telling him the truth for weeks. She realizes that he doesn’t trust her and she knows he will hate the deal she made with Percy. Robert and Jackie enter and Robert announces that he is the new police commissioner! They chatter about the party and Jackie tells her it is formal and the girls head off to get dressed. Luke is frustrated over her leaving again. Later when Holly enters the party, Luke is hoping they can sit and talk. She though circulates and greets their friends, leaving him fuming in her wake. Later in their stateroom, he tells her again he knows that she is holding something back, something she isn’t telling him. She denies this and begins kissing him. He grabs her and pulls her down on the bed. Robert and Jackie are dancing and enjoying the evening. Robert pulls Tiffany out on the dance floor at their private party, and then Jackie pulls Noah out to dance. Robert almost immediately switches partners to cut in and leaves Tiffany dancing with Noah. Bobbie enters with her date and Tiffany winds up dancing with the other doctor as Bobbie dances with Noah. Jackie worries that Tiffany is going to have a melt down and sends Robert over to dance with Jackie. As everyone else is celebrating, Luke and Holly are on deck and Luke is still trying to get her to tell him what is going on and she continues to hedge. As “Auld Land Syn” plays, he asks her once again to tell him. She urges him to enjoy the night, that this is the start of their future together. She promises to tell him tomorrow and asks him to hold her and celebrate the evening with her. The next morning, Luke is ready to talk and Holly meanders about what a beautiful day it is and suggests they go out on deck. Luke firmly tells her they aren’t going anywhere and they are going to talk here and now. Robert comes in wanting to talk to Luke and Holly uses this as an excuse to run out to leave them to talk. Robert asks Luke to work with him on the police force and Luke laughs at the idea of him being a cop. After Robert leaves, Trotter calls from Canada and tells Luke that the investigation against Percy has been dropped. Luke can’t believe it, then Trotter tells him that Percy’s lawyers trotted in with a signed letter from Holly absolving Percy of having anything to do the oil scam. Luke assumes it was forged but Trotter says it has been verified and with Holly’s testimony they can’t proceed, as they have no other evidence against Percy. Robert meets with the mayor who tells him the city owns a Victorian house that will be his residence as the new police commissioner. He is glad he doesn’t have to look for a place to live. They discuss Robert’s priorities as he takes over his new duties. Luke confronts Holly and he lets her have it for not telling him. He reams her for not telling and he suspects she never would have. He asks why she didn’t tell him when she returned? He feels she is a liar and will always lie to him. She says he will never trust her and tries to get him to understand that it was her father’s burial at stake. He doesn’t buy it and says that she could have called him, she could have talked to Trotter, or perhaps had both of her parent’s moved elsewhere. She says she made her decision and what is done is done. Luke starts grabbing his clothes and packing, as he has to get away from her. It’s too little too late and he has forgiven her and forgiven her, and he could have forgiven her anything except her lying to him again. He is very angry and it seems very final as he says his goodbyes and heads to the mountain. After Luke leaves, Holly fills Robert in on the fight she had with Luke. Luke arrives up in the mountains and it is freezing cold. He stops in a diner and almost calls home but winds up hanging up without calling. Robert tries to reassure Holly that Luke can take care of himself and they will just have to wait for him to call. The next morning, Robert continues his chipper mood trying to cheer Holly up and keep her mind off of worrying about Luke. He suggests she work on setting a new course for her life when she comments not having any money. Jackie comes in for some coffee and when Robert suggests that perhaps Jackie could see if there are any openings at the newspaper, she says she doesn’t think that is a very good idea. She obviously doesn’t like the idea of Holly working at the paper or think she has the qualifications. She suddenly is late for work and has to leave. Robert goes downstairs to find Holly and apologize to her for Jackie’s rudeness. Holly doesn’t blame her for it. Robert encourages her about moving forward with her life and believing in herself. Jackie walks in and Holly leaves to go look for work. Jackie snarks at Robert for all of the time he is spending with Holly. He reminds her that Holly lost her father a week ago, worried about losing Luke and she just needs a friend. Jackie doesn’t understand why that has to be him? He says because he is partially responsible for her being in Port Charles and he likes the girl. She suggests perhaps he feels more than just friendship for her. Offended, he retorts that comment is in poor taste. Holly starts calling about job ads in the newspaper. She contacts one for window decorating and seems she meets the qualifications and they want to interview her until they hear she is THE Holly Sutton and then they aren’t interested. Robert returns and asks about her day and she is discouraged that her past is closing doors to pretty much every job she inquires about. He continues to be very supportive and encouraging even offering her a job at the police department! She laughs and thinks she might be better suited for the catering business and tells him she has a lead on a job later in the month, that is unless they realize who she is. Jackie calls Robert up and tells him she is sorry and has made him fresh croissants, his favorite. Robert finds Holly up on deck with her backpack ready to head up to the mountains. As the snow falls around them, he stops her and tells her it is too dangerous with the storm moving in. She insists she has to find Luke and becomes upset and tries to get past her. He shakes her and tells her she can’t go that she will just have to wait for Luke to return. She starts crying and he pulls her into his arms and tells her he is sorry. Jackie walks up and finds Robert holding a crying Holly in his arms. She takes her picnic basket and leaves without being seen. Robert becomes concerned when Jackie never shows up. He tracks her down to her office and heads over there. He finds her sharing the breakfast she made with Ian, her editor. She rips into him for finding him holding Holly. He tries to explain to her that Holly was upset. Jackie says that he made a move on his best friend’s lady and now he is trying to deny it. She is not only furious at him but also at Holly and storms off. Jackie arrives at the Star and reams Holly for coming between her and Jackie. Holly assures her that she is in love with Luke and had no intention of coming between her and Robert. Jackie continues yelling at her until Ruby intervenes and tells her to cool it. Robert walks in and agrees and wants to know what is going on with Jackie? Jackie is furious that he has been Holly’s nursemaid since Luke left, it’s always about what Holly needs, what Holly wants and Jackie is tired of it and storms out. Robert says he is sorry about that scene. Luke is up in the mountains, snow camping. A drifter he met at the diner comes along and Luke is very hospitable. The guy knocks him out and steals his necklace and his wallet. When Luke comes to, he continues his hiking up the snow-covered mountain. He enters an off limit area and is buried in an avalanche. The rescue workers find him and work to get him to safety. Holly hears the news report about the avalanche and immediately begins to worry. She tells Robert about it when he enters, and he is reassuring. He realizes she will continue to worry and offers to call the ranger station and check into it. The ranger doesn’t have any information about Luke at this time. Robert offers to come up to help search for him but he is told that unless he is mountain rescued trained that he won’t be of any help. Holly wants to head up there but he tells her that the roads are closed and they can’t get through. Ruby comes running in having heard about the avalanche and Holly calms her down. Robert tries to get Ruby’s mind off of Luke and tells her about Holly’s job search. She reports that Dan is hiring a patient liaison and asks if Holly might be interested. She doesn’t seem to sure about it but Robert says it will be perfect and Ruby drags her off. They enter Dan’s office and Ruby tells her that Holly is interested in the job. He agrees that she has the personality for it but there are drawbacks to hiring her. She immediately assumes he means it would embarrass the hospital to hire her. He corrects her that he was talking about her lack of training and he offers to provide the training and then recommend her to the board. A thrilled Holly comes into Kelly’s and tells Robert that she got the job. Her joy is short lived though as she sees a newspaper article about victims being found in the avalanche and their names are being withheld pending notification of the next of kin. She is frantic but Robert calms her down and sends her off to start her new job and promises he will call her as soon as he hears anything. They hear that a hiker has been found stranded in a cave, relatively unhurt, and they become sure it is Luke. Robert hires a helicopter for him and Holly to fly up to the mountain to find out for sure. He calls Holly once he is able to make the arrangements and she hurries back to the Star to pack for the trip. Robert receives a phone call from the ranger and he tells him that Lucas Lorenzo Spencer’s body has been recovered from the avalanche and he has been identified by his personal effects. Robert goes white and seems about to pass out with the shock of the news. He calls Ruby and asks her and Bobbie to come over to the Star. He doesn’t tell Ruby anything over the phone but she knows it is not good news. Robert then goes down to find Holly, she is not only packing for herself but also putting some things together for Luke. She says if he has been in a cave for three days that he will appreciate some clean clothes and his toothbrush. She isn’t listening to Robert as she babbles about what she can take for Luke. He grabs her and demands that she listen to him. Now he has her full attention and he tells her the hiker they found in the cave wasn’t Luke. She asks how he could know that? He tells her that a ranger called and that they found Luke’s body. Ruby and Bobbie arrive and Robert tells them the sad news. Bobbie starts screaming at Robert that Luke isn’t dead. Holly isn’t crying as she doesn’t believe it. She says a mistake could have been made that they could have mixed up his papers with another body. Robert tells her that they don’t make this kind of mistake in body identification. Bobbie and Holly both agree that until they see his body that they won’t believe it. Robert calls the helicopter company and makes arrangements to fly out the next morning. Robert and Holly arrive at the mountain morgue, to ID the body. The ranger tells them the body was badly crushed and a positive identification is going to be difficult if not impossible. Robert discourages her from going in and asks her to let him go in first so that he can see how bad it is and prepare her. She tells him that she has to see for herself. He begs her not to go in there as it’s Luke but she will never be able to tell from the body. Robert tries to stop her, blocking her way but she refuses to take no for an answer. She comes out and appears a bit faint. Robert helps her to sit down and she asks him how he can be so sure. Robert points out that the guy is the same height, same coloring and was carrying Luke’s wallet. He tells her there were other personal effects found on the body, not just Luke’s wallet. The ranger gives her the rest of his personal effects and when she finds the sixpence necklace, she tenderly holds it up to her check and devastated says, “It’s Luke!” They return to the Star and without a word, Holly enters and puts Luke’s effects on the bar, his wallet, his watch, and the necklace that Holly gave him for Christmas. Ruby and Bobbie look at them quietly in somber understanding. #20B As Bobbie holds Luke’s watch, she turns to Holly and shakily cries, “Holly?” Holly reassures her as much as she can. Robert tells them that he saw Luke but he doesn’t mention he couldn’t ID the body. Robert tells them that under the circumstances that cremation would be best. Ruby breaks down and sobs. Robert gets a cab for Ruby and Bobbie and asks them to leave their car at the Star. As Robert helps the ladies out to a cab, Holly goes to Luke’s room. She puts the two pieces of the necklace together, she holds one of his shirts tightly, and she walks around the room in disbelief and finally breaks down and begins sobbing and screaming, “No!” Robert comes in and holds her as she grieves. Tiffany and Jackie at breakfast, sad over Luke's death. Holly dreams of Luke, Tiff and Jackie talk about his memorial for that day. Holly listens to music box that Luke gave her for Christmas and she's heartbroken, Robert tries to comfort her. Bobbie and Ruby talk about Luke. Blackie goes to pick up Tiff and Jackie but tells them he doesn't want to go to the memorial, Tiff talks him into it. Bobbie and Ruby are grieving together. Luke's informal memorial on the Star for his friends, guests begin to arrive, Holly, Robert, Jackie, Ruby, Dan Rooney, Tiff, Blackie, Jackie, and Noah. Robert talks first and has flashback of him and Luke about Robert's deciding to stay in PC and their friendship. Bobbie is next, then Tiff, Blackie, and Ruby and they all have flashbacks to their relationship with Luke. Then Holly talks about Luke and flashes back to the first time they made love when they met on the mountain. They all say goodbye to Luke and toast him with champagne. Just after his friends have said goodbye to him, we see an unconscious Luke lying in the hospital. A doctor and nurse are talking about the absence of any friends or family waiting for him to wake up. The doctor says he doesn’t know if Luke will retain use of his legs, as there was damage to his spinal cord. He wants to do surgery when Luke is stable. Luke begins to wake up and hears the doctor discussing Luke’s case with the nurse and says he doesn’t believe Luke will ever walk again. We see a great montage of Luke in action, Luke running in Vancouver, Luke jumping over a van during the David Grey storyline, and using his legs to leap over a railing, running across a bridge and fight off the cops at the amusement park. The doctor’s ears ring in his ears that he will never walk again. Holly becomes nauseous and Bobbie is worried about her. Holly tells Bobbie that she feels like her life is over. Bobbie assures her that she has her health and a lot of friends who care about her. She wants to know if she is getting dressed to go to GH or if she is going to stay in her room hiding from the world? Holly agrees to get dressed. Holly suddenly becomes ravenous and is pigging out in the cafeteria. Steve stops by to pay his condolences. Luke lies in the hospital bed and envisions a life in a wheelchair as Holly pushes him around, and Ruby gives him his pills. He continues his Dickinsonian imagination of Holly spending her life in near servitude in a dark and dingy Kelly’s with bags under her eyes, unable to fend off the advances of lecherous customers as he has to sit idly by unable to protect her. He imagines her having to dress him and put his pants on for him and getting frustrated and pushing her away. This is all very dreary, as Luke has no hope for the future or of having any kind of life in a wheelchair. Luke hears a news report on the radio that he has been declared a victim in the avalanche. The nurse and doctor try to get information about Luke’s background and medical history. Luke pretends he doesn’t know who he is. The sly doctor starts talking about last year’s Super bowl game between the Cowboys and 49ers. The doctor talks about a big play but says the wrong player made the big pass. Luke corrects him and says it was Joe Montana. The doc asks if he was at that game and Luke says no that he and Robert watched it. The doctor realizes Luke does remember things and tells him the game is up. He asks why Luke doesn’t want anyone to know where he is? Luke asks if he will walk again and the doctor says, “I don’t know?” The doctor reams him for being selfish at letting his folks back home thinking he is dead. He asks Luke if this had happened to one of Luke’s family or friends would he turn his back on them? Luke says no, but he knows that he will complicate the lives of everyone he cares about and he refuses to do so. Luke knows that they will pity him and he will hate them. He believes he will be a cripple and will be a burden and demands the doctor leave him alone! Tiffany and Robert get an offer from someone to buy the Star and they talk it over with Ruby and Bobbie and they all agree to the sale. Bobbie insists that Holly see a doctor who confirms that Holly is pregnant. Holly tells Bobbie that she is pregnant with Luke’s baby. Jesse tells Holly that she needs her green card number; Holly is concerned, as she doesn’t have a green card. Holly then tells Ruby who is thrilled about the news. Holly is worried about having a baby out of wedlock but Ruby reassures her that her friends will stand by her. She worries about not being able to work without a green card and Ruby suggests that Robert will certainly be able to help her with that being the new police commissioner. Ruby then suggests that they get a place together and Ruby will be her built in babysitter and she assures her that Bobbie will help out as well. Ruby tells her that Holly has to be out in two days as the Star has been sold and suggests she stay at Kelly’s until her and Ruby can find a bigger place together. (Note: There is a poor video quality section that starts at about 1 hr 17 minutes into the dvd #20B or at 5 hrs 17 minutes into the vhs tape version and lasts for 12 minutes, sound is good. I included it as I felt this was an important part of the story). Holly tells Robert that she is pregnant and he is thrilled with the news. He immediately asks what she can do to help? She says to just be a friend, that she has to find a place to live and a way to support herself. He tells her whatever he has is hers as Luke’s child deserves the best. Holly tells him that immigration is making waves and that she doesn’t have a green card. He is surprised that she has been able to work at GH without one. Robert calls Lee and tells him that Holly needs his help. Lee says he will be right over. Robert assures her again, he can tell that she is worried about raising the baby on her own. Lee tells them that with Holly’s oil scam history that it is unlikely she will get a green card, he doubts that she will even be able to get a work permit! Robert is very disturbed by this. Jackie comes in as Robert is on the phone, getting the response from the authorities that Lee predicted. She realizes he is helping Holly and she is obviously jealous that Robert is always the one helping Holly. She snarkily asks if Holly has a hangnail? She learns that Holly needs a green card but Robert doesn’t tell her that Holly is pregnant. She is annoyed over his concern for Holly and he does nothing to reassure her. As Jackie storms out, Holly comes in and demands that Robert go after her! He has no interest in doing so (end of poor quality section). Robert meets with a government representative who tells him that no one is going to risk their reputation in order to help Holly because of her criminal history. He says that since Watergate, everyone is careful of potential scandal. Robert goes to see Holly at GH and tells her he tried all of his contacts at the State Department, WSB, and the Justice Department. He teases that she is too controversial of a character. A frightened Holly says she has to make arrangements to leave the country. He asks her to slow down and she hasn’t heard him say he has given up and he remains optimistic that he can come up with another solution as he knows there is one and he will find it! She tells him that she only got this job because of the kindness of Dan Rooney. They go to Robert’s and she tells him she can go to nanny’s and she will help her care for the child. He asks what about Percy and Basil when he finds out that she is there? She insists that they won’t know but he points out that sooner or later they will find out, someone will see her in the street and they will find out. Holly calls Nanny and finds out that she has gone to England to take care of her sick sister. Holly says she can’t go there, as Nanny’s sister is very poor. Holly becomes frantic as she realizes she can’t work and she will be deported as soon as they figure out that she doesn’t have a green card. She has no place to go, no family, no one who will take her in, and no means of supporting herself and her baby! As she becomes almost hysterical in her desperation, Robert vows that he will marry her! She is beyond shock as her mouth drops open at this suggestion. She asks what about Jackie who would be more than happy to become Mrs. Robert Scorpio. He tells her not to worry about that as he and Jackie are finished. She asks what would Luke think about it? He points out that Luke is dead. She says that Luke is not dead in her heart and she feels strange about marriage to any other man. He suggests that this won’t be a permanent situation and he knows that Luke would do the same thing for Robert. He believes that Luke would want them to do this to protect his child. Luke would understand that she wouldn’t be safe in England as there are a lot of Durbins there and he jokes that Luke wouldn’t want his child growing up as a cockney! He gets her to agree to give the proposition some very careful thought. Later, Jackie arrives to tell Robert that she acted like a fool. She continues that loves him and is afraid to lose him. She says that she knows he was acting out of his friendship for Luke and she offers to help him help Holly and she won’t object to his friendship with her. She tells him she wants to work it out. He stammers that he asked Holly to marry him. Jackie tells him he is the most disgusting person on earth! His best friend is barely buried! She hauls off and socks him and sends him flying and storms out! A nurse comes in and asks Luke about any medical insurance? He says he doesn’t remember. He tells her he doesn’t have any money. She tells him he will be a charity case. He doesn’t like this idea and insists he will pay his own way! She asks how he plans on doing that? When he has no response, she tells him that he will become a ward of the state and transferred to a state hospital. Jackie goes to Kelly’s and tells Holly off. Holly tells Rose everything but then decides to take off, as she doesn't want to ruin Robert's life. The immigration officer arrives to see her to her plane and out of the country. Rose arrives at Robert's penthouse to tell him the news. A physical therapist goes into see Luke and tries to get him to cooperate with treatment. He challenges Luke to fight for his life, to fight to improve the quality of his life. He warns him that his muscles with atrophy and die and he will shrivel up if he doesn’t start working them. The guy continues until Luke gets ticked off and tries to slug him. Robert has Holly's plane held at the airport. Robert uses his position as commish to stop and board the plane. He takes Holly off under pretense of arrest. He accuses her of not considering the welfare of her child. He points out that she has no way of supporting the child and she is responsible for the downfall of the Durbans and that they are all in hiding because of her. She doesn’t want to take away his freedom and he tells her that he won’t be. He cares about her and Luke’s child and he wants to do this. He tells her that her future in England doesn’t look too jolly. He says that her child will be brought up with no security, with no name, and no father. He asks that if she really loves her child that she will marry him. She finally agrees. The mountain man Luke met while hiking hears his voice and stops into stay hello. He delivers some down home wisdom and for the first time it seems like someone is getting through to Luke. He pretty much tells him he is in a fight and is he going to lie down and take it? He promises to return and they can play a game of chess. Luke seems to look forward to the idea. Robert tells the immigration officer that he is marrying Holly and already has the license. The officer is annoyed and doesn’t believe this is legitimate. He tells him he will be going to city hall to investigate. Robert tells him to go right ahead as by the time he is done they will be married! They get a copy of their recent blood work and head to city hall. Robert pulls strings to get the 24-hour waiting period waived. They have a city hall wedding (a week before Valentine’s). Robert tells her that they have to be married either for two years or till the baby is born and they have to make everyone believe it. Robert tells the immigration officer that they are married and she is pregnant with Robert’s child. Holly worries about how Bobbie and Ruby will react to the news she has married Robert. He assures her they will understand and asks her not to worry about it. Robert tells her he will sleep in the guestroom. Holly really doesn’t want to live at his penthouse as she has so many memories of her father while he lived there. The next morning, he tells her they have to start telling everyone they are married. He tells her that he told Jackie. She says that she should tell Bobbie and Ruby first. He offers to do that for her but she says no she will do it. Only Bobbie and Ruby know that the baby is Luke’s and Robert tells her that they have to tell everyone that the baby is Robert’s so Immigration doesn’t get wise. Holly objects, as that would be a betrayal of Luke. He says he would love to tell everyone the baby is Luke’s but says she absolutely can’t as the first priority is keeping her in the country and the baby safe. He promises that one-day they will be able tell everyone that Luke is the baby’s father. Robert tells Rose that he married Holly. She supports his decision and tells him he did a good thing. He doesn’t think everyone else is going to be as understanding and appreciates her support. Holly tells Ruby and Bobbie and they are quite shocked. She explains that she was being deported and was actually on a plane to leave the country. She assures them that she only married Robert to keep Luke’s baby in the country and it is a marriage of convenience. She then tells them that they can’t tell anyone that her baby is actually Luke’s. They both strongly object to this and feel it will be a betrayal of Luke. She tells then she doesn’t have a choice, as she will be deported if immigration gets proof that this is a marriage of convenience and that the baby isn’t Robert’s. Robert tells Tiffany next and she is not quite so accepting as Rose. He tells her about the immigration issue and that he did it to keep Holly in the country but does not tell her about Luke’s baby. Jackie is furious and accuses him of having the hots for Holly and using this situation as an excuse! Holly and Robert see each other at home later and she tells him that Bobbie and Ruby took the news fairly well. She is worried that him marrying her will hurt his career. He isn’t at all worried about it. He tells her the only thing important is that her and Luke’s baby will be safe and have a home. Robert and Holly are taken to see the police commissioner’s new digs. Robert loves the place, especially the secret room with the computer. The Quartermaine’s find Susan Moore has been murdered. Robert rushes in (looking quite dapper) to begin the investigation of his first big case as the new police commissioner. Alan tells him that Jason is missing and he is afraid the baby has been kidnapped. Burt and other officers arrive as well and begin carrying out Robert’s orders. Robert gets a hold of Scotty and tells him that his wife has been murdered. Alan and Edward tell Robert that Susan asked them to come over. When they arrived, they heard a scream and ran up to her bedroom and found Jackie standing over Susan’s dead body. Robert doesn’t believe their story that they think Susan called them over to discuss Jason’s financial settlement at that hour of the night. He menacingly tells them if they don’t get their acts together that they will have plenty of time in jail! They find Jason is safe and sound with the housekeeper. Robert questions Edward, Alan, Monica, and Scotty. A tired Robert returns home and apologizes to Holly for not calling to tell her he will be late. He says he didn’t think about having someone waiting at home for him, as he isn’t used to checking in. He tells her that until he finds Susan’s murderer that he will not be taking any days off. Robert comes out of the secret room after his workout not wearing a shirt. Holly hands him Jackie’s recent article that reports about Susan’s murder and that the new police commissioner had to cut short his honeymoon with ex-con artist, Holly Sutton. He is very annoyed at this yellow journalism. He had told her not to report any of the details of Susan’s murder before she cleared it with him. Holly is upset for him and he tells her it is just yellow journalism and Jackie taking out her personal vendetta against him. He can’t go after her as that is what she wants as she will then use freedom of the press to stand behind. Burt updates him on the status of the on scene investigation. Robert next questions Alice Grant (Heather’s mother), then Heather, then Scotty again, followed by an interview with Rick Webber. He follows up leads and talks to many different witnesses around town. He calls Heather back in for additional questioning. He shows her a silver filigree lipstick he found near the body. She denies that it is hers but he has tracked it down to a purchase made by Joe Kelly the previous year as a gift for her. He threatens her to start cooperating or he will have her arrested! She tells him she has been in jail before and she doesn’t scare easily. She continues to deny being there at the time of the murder and says it had been days since she had been there.
