Sonny #3 - July 9 - Oct 11, 1999 - 8 hr original editTammy tells Sonny about the strange guy that was pestering Hannah. She seemed to know him, and Tammy didn't think it was any of her business. Sonny is not happy to hear this. Tammy runs out to a civic association meeting. Sonny stands there and thinks. He recalls his conversation with Hannah about the doctor she used to date. Hannah is walking back home through a darkened Kelly's. She goes into her room, turns on the light. She sees a man sitting in the chair and starts to say, "I thought I told you...." till she sees that its Sonny. Sonny asks, "thought you told whom?". Sonny busts her on lying to him, he has figured out that the guy hassling Hannah has been around for awhile - she told him the guy just contacted her. When Hannah attempts to change the subject, Sonny quickly becomes angry. Hannah tries to leave, but Sonny blocks the door. He insists that she tell him the truth, but Hannah maintains that Sonny is primarily interested in intimidation, not the truth. She asks him to leave and he complies, effectively ending the relationship. When Sonny returns to his penthouse, he finds Mac and Taggert waiting and invites them in for espresso. The two policemen inquire as to whether or not Sonny knows anything about a jewelry fence named Gardener, but Sonny reveals nothing. At Kelly's, Hannah returns the dress that Sonny gave to her for the Nurses' Ball to its box. Jason tells Sonny that he gave up all his rights to Michael. He said he didn't want Michael to see him and AJ fighting or to make Michael choose between them. Sonny tells Jason that he will never hurt like this again and he will guard his heart a bit more now and no one will ever ge that part of his heart that he gave his son. Jason says that is fine as long as it is him hurting and not Michael. Mike comes t see sonny, and sonny tells him about Jason and Michael. Mike and Sonny talk about their relationship except this time they decide to be friends. Hannah is cleaning cuts on Jason's face (in got in a fight with Moreno's men) and just as she leans in close to Jason, Sonny enters. He says he can come back later. Hannah becomes indignant. Did he think she was seducing Jason? Did he think she was betraying him? Hannah gets angrier and tells Sonny that she assumes she has no job and no place to live now since he was responsible for her getting those. She leaves. Sonny asks Jason to tell him what happened with Juan. After being told, Sonny is concerned that Juan is taking sides with Moreno to get back at him. Jason packed up Michael's things and told Sonny he was taking off for a while. He said there were too many memories of his family, Michael and Carly. Sonny told him running away wouldn't help but knew he had to find out for himself. Sonny and Hannah talked about their breakup and ended up kissing making up. Hannah apologized to Sonny and admitted that her anger had been misplaced. Sonny and Hannah then reconciled and said they wanted to be in each other's lives. Sonny makes love to Hannah. Hannah tells her lover that she doesn't like it when they fight and he agrees. The couple then decides to leave the past in the past. Emily found Juan beaten to a pulp. Sorel looked her in the eyes when he went to leave! She calls the paramedics and Juan is taken to GH. Emily telephones Sonny after she is made aware that Juan's medical history is needed. When Sonny arrives at the hospital, Emily tells him what happened in the alley. She informs Sonny that Juan wanted to spy on Moreno so that Sonny would trust him and think fondly of him. He urges her to not tell anyone that she recognized Sorel that he would take care of it, not to involved the police that this is the only way Sonny could keep her safe. Emily's family then barges into the ER, upset that the young Quartermaine is involved with Sonny. Just as things begin to grow tense, Mac arrives and questions Emily (I have a small pre-empt here as Mac arrives). Emily, following Sonny's guidance, does not admit that she recognized Sorrel. Monica lays into Sonny about Emily's being put at risk because of Sonny's business. In his hospital bed, Juan tells Sonny that he knows that he is his father. Sonny tells Hannah about how Juan called him "Dad" and assures her that he's not. Benny comes by and assures Sonny that the guy who beat Juan up is taken care of. Tony fills in Sonny about Juan's condition. Tony gets all high and mighty trying to keep Sonny and Juan apart. Mike intervenes and points out that Tony is out of line. Tony storms off, and Mike offers his friendship. Sonny obsesses about how he's caused Juan's problems. Juan wakes up and asks Sonny, "Why do you hate me so much dad?" Sonny and Juan have a heart to heart. Sonny tells him that he's not his son. Juan asks, "Just tell me why you don't want me and I'll make it better." And then his heart monitor starts to go off right as Emily is coming up to his room. As Juan is rushed away for more surgery, Emily asks Sonny if he spent the night with Juan. Sonny tells her what happened through the night. He then asks her if she knew that Juan thought Sonny was his father. She replies that Juan knew he was his father, so why won't Sonny admit it. Sonny replies that Miguel Morez was Juan's father and that he promised Lily he'd always look after Juan. Emily can't understand why Sonny wasn't nicer to Juan. She tells him that Juan wanted to impress Sonny. That is why he took the job with Moreno. Emily goes on and on about Juan. She says he's really a sweet guy. He remembers meeting Sonny when he was a child and she tells how she met Juan. Sonny is not happy to hear that Emily first met him out in public. He warns her not to talk to people she doesn't know. She tries to convince Sonny that Juan is smart and just wants to impress Sonny and be like him. Bobbie tells them that Juan has two more hours of surgery. There's a problem with his spleen. She thinks Emily should go home because it will be a long time before she can see Juan. Emily wants to wait but when Bobbie says she'll let Monica know that Emily is safe at the hospital, Emily decides to go home. Sonny offers to bring her in his limo. She accepts but insists on being dropped off down the road so she can slip back in her room unnoticed. When Sonny arrives at the penthouse, Johnny tells him there is a visitor. He enters and sees Hannah whom he tells about Juan. She tries to comfort him, telling him she knows he would trade places with Juan if he could. She wants to go upstairs with him but he dismisses her, telling her thanks for stopping by. When Hannah goes back to Kelly's, she tells Tammy that she knows Sonny needs her, but he keeps pushing her away. Meanwhile, Sonny is on the phone yelling at someone to find Mr. Santiago. Juan needs him. He throws the phone across the room in frustration. Juan has come out of surgery and Sonny is at his bedside. He tells Juan that he almost had a little brother. He wonders if his son would have looked like Juan. Would his boy have been as smart and fearless as Juan? He wishes he could have told him that he was his father. Emily comes in and they go into the hall to talk. She tells Sonny that she's never been afraid of him that he's so soft-spoken, not wanting to be noticed. She mentions Brenda's name and says, "I see in you what I saw before--how sad you are." Monica sees them and barges over to tell Sonny that she doesn't want him near her daughter. She tells Emily to go home or she will call security to have her taken to her car and driven home. Emily tells Monica if Juan dies she'll never forgive her. Monica starts in on Sonny. Sonny tries to explain that he doesn't know how Emily got there, etc. but Monica won't even listen. She says she is immune to his soulful looks. She's going to protect her daughter from him. Mr. Santiago comes rushing in looking for Dr. Quartermaine and introduces himself. He says that is his son in there fighting for his life because of Sonny. He accuses Sonny of setting in motion this chain of events when he gave Juan Lily's cross. Sonny says he'll be the villain, but if life was so perfect with Santiago why did Juan come looking for him? Emily comes back to talk to Juan and wonders if she did the right thing by calling the police. Juan wakes up and asks for Sonny. Sonny arrives home at the penthouse and pulls the pictures of Lily and Juan out. He pours himself a drink and then smashes it. Sonny is sitting in his trashed apartment thinking of when he told Lily that he chose a life. He sees her holding a little boy and then it turns to Hannah holding Michael and a beat up Juan in the hospital. The bodyguard is worried and calls Benny. Benny goes in and see the whole place trashed and gets worried. He starts to go up the stairs but Sonny is sitting on them with what looks like a broken vase and threatens him. He tells him to go. Benny goes outside and tells the bodyguard to find Jason fast and not let anyone find out what went on in there. Sonny takes the picture of him and Lily out of the fireplace and takes a shard of glass from it and looks at it intently. Carly went to see Sonny to ask him to bring Jason back. She convinces the guard to let her in and she sees Sonny and the trashed apartment and is totally shocked. She says his name and he looks at her. Carly keeps trying to talk to an almost comatose Sonny. He isn't responding to anything she says. When Carly asks to see the picture Sonny is holding, the one with the broken glass, Sonny ignores her, until she gently tries to take the picture way. Sonny grabs on to the picture tighter and has the look of a wounded animal in his eyes. Carly explains to Sonny that he could hurt himself on the broken glass and she doesn't want that. Defeated, Sonny lets Carly take the broken picture away. She tells Sonny that she will be right back. She goes outside and tells the bodyguard to find Benny or Johnny. She demands that he not come back until he has found one of them. The bodyguard reluctantly leaves after Carly threatens to tell Jason that he gave her a hard time. Back inside the penthouse, Sonny is nowhere to be seen. Carly calls his name and then says that she is going to open the drapes to let in a little light. As she starts to open them, Sonny shields his eyes from the light and demands to know what she is doing. Sonny angrily closes the curtains and goes to find one of his bodyguard. He is furious when Carly tells him that she sent him away. He demands that she leave, but she doesn't want to go until one of the bodyguards returns. Sonny tries to pay Carly to leave saying that that is what she always wants. Carly does not take the money and calmly picks up the phone. Carly looks terrified when Sonny grabs the phone from her and throws it on the ground. He demands that she leave again, but Carly just turns and stares at him defiantly. Carly explains that she was calling Bobbie. Sonny angrily tells Carly that Bobbie can't help. He tells her that she is even dumber than he though. Carly says that she doesn't care if Sonny hates her. She knows he would never hurt her. Jason loves her and even if Sonny doesn't understand that, he respects it. Carly tells Sonny that he needs help. She wants to call Bobbie. Carly is in tears when she starts to straighten up. Sonny tells her not to bother. He already redecorated. Lily would have done a better job, but its' better this way. When you open up the door you see the truth. Everything Sonny Corinthos touches gets destroyed. Carly tries to stop Sonny from drinking more, but he tells her he can do whatever he wants. She asks how long it has been since he has eaten or slept. Sonny says that eating and sleeping are overrated. Sonny tells Carly that the people she loves may be bleeding and broken when she is done with them, but at least they are alive. He can't say that. Carly tells Sonny that she doesn't care who he is, he doesn't have the power of life and death. People don't drop dead because of something he does. She tells him how her adopted mother died of a stroke while they are arguing. She knows that it wasn't her fault. God doesn't think that way. And neither do the people who love Sonny. They wouldn't blame him. Sonny tells her not to explain his sickness to him. If she can explain things to herself fine. He is not afraid to look the devil in the eye. As he says this he smashes the half-full bottle of liquor he is holding against the table. The bottle shatters and the alcohol splashes everywhere, including onto Carly. Carly tries to get Sonny to let her look at his hand. He cut it when he smashed the bottle. Sonny looks at the hand and says that the blood isn't his. It's Lily's. Carly helps Sonny tend to his wounded hand. He keeps repeating "I did it". Carly asks what he is talking about. It was a reference to the deaths of Lily and the baby. Sonny told her every detail of the night Lily died, though he didn't mention that the reason he wasn't driving was because he had been drinking. He told Carly how beautiful Lily was, what she was wearing, how he finally realized that he loved this woman who adored him. Carly told Sonny that she always thought he was a cold, empty shell of a person but now she knew why and understood. They shared a very tender, though not romantic, moment which Jason walked in on. They rise. Sonny tells Jason that Carly was there looking for Jason and would not leave. Sonny goes in search of a drink. Carly tells Jason what happened. Jason and Carly hug and he thanks her for being there. Jason asks and Carly says that Sonny did not hurt her, just scared her. She tells Jason that she understands Sonny and his behavior better. Jason tells her that Sonny did not mean the hurtful things he said. Carly has had a revelation - someone does hurt more that her. The people she loves are still alive, but Sonny's loved ones are dead. Carly tells Jason tha t Benny and Johnny were out looking for him; he tells her Johnny is outside. He says she did the best anyone could do when Sonny gets that way. Carly says she just kept telling herself to hold on till Jason returned. Jason tells her he came back because his life is in PC. Jason tells Carly to go home, but she first wants him to promise that he does not hate her or think she betrayed him. She drags out the tired line about doing everything for him, Michael, and herself. They embrace. Sonny comes downstairs and is still surly. He wants Carly to leave. Jason walks her out. They talk in front of the elevator. Carly says she understands how Sonny feels knowing that she saw him that way - his did not mean to trust her. Jason says he knows that Carly will not betray that trust by telling anyone what happened. Jason says he owes her one for being there when it counted. She reminds him that she owes him far more that one and that she did not do it as a payback. Jason says he admires Carly for getting through the time with Sonny. Carly leaves. Jason goes back in and starts to clean up. Sonny tells him to leave it. Sonny tells Jason about what happened with Juan. Jason tells him he is not to blame for Juan's condition. Jason reminds Sonny of all the ways he made Jason's life what it is. **The End** |
