Sonny & Carly #31  October 11 - November 29, 2004 - 8 hours

In the park, Jason overhears as John and Steven discuss having Alcazar on a leash and Steven assures Durant that John has Steven's full support. John admits that, although he is becoming attached to his long-lost daughter, John cannot let his feelings for Carly stand in the way of doing his job. After John leaves, Jason confronts Steven and demands answers. Steven insists that he is only in town to get to know his sister better, but Jason suspiciously insists that it is strange that Steven and Durant both showed up in town at the same time and seem to spend a lot of time together. Jason asks if John and Steven were arguing because Steven objects to Durant working Carly for evidence that would put Sonny away. Steven insists that he felt he needed a positive recommendation from Durant to get a job in Port Charles.  Steven urges Jason to caution Carly about getting hurt.

Carly is thrilled when Sonny suggests that they enjoy a night out on the town.  As Diego and Lucas get into a shoving match, Sonny and Carly arrive and Carly informs an impressed Dillon that Lucas is the brother-in-law of Port Charles' leading mobster. Diego apologizes and leaves when Sonny orders Diego to go. After Diego leaves, Sonny takes Brook Lynn into the Cellar, while Carly remains behind to speak to Lucas. Lucas confides to Carly that Lois asked them to take Diego with them because Diego is Courtney's new foster child, and Lois wanted to do a favor for Courtney. Carly decides to call Courtney and let Courtney know about Diego. Sonny suddenly shows up and begins trading insults with John. Outside, Lucas confides to Carly that Bobbie is worried about Carly's obsession with getting to know Carly's long-lost father. Carly confides to Courtney that Carly has no plans to pursue a relationship with her illusive father.

Carly meets with Jason at Kelly's. Jason tells Carly that if she wants to really see her father she should tell Sonny and warns her not to sneak around to see Durant behind their backs. Sonny takes Michael to GH after he hurts his arm after a soccer game. The pediatrician looks at his arm to try and determine if it could be broken. Alexis shows up on the same floor with Kristina in her arms. She approaches them and tells the pediatrician that Kristina has a fever again and a rash on her chest and back.

Steven asks Sonny if he knows who Kristina's father is? Sonny says yes and Steven tells him that he should notify the father in case they need him. Alexis asks Sonny what Steven told him and asks Sonny if Morgan has the same symptoms as Kristina has. Sonny asks her why she would think Morgan would have the same symptoms as Kristina when they aren't related. Alexis isn't happy when Steven comes back and tells her that Kristina's tests came back within normal range and tells her not to worry too much. Alexis demands to know what is really wrong with her daughter? Sonny suggests that she call Ned. Alexis tells him that Ned is out of town and couldn't help her anyway.  Sonny calls Ric and tells him to come GH right now because Alexis needs him.

Later, Carly poses as a maid and breaks into Durant's hotel room to look for any files that will show what her father's true motives are. Durant shows up unexpectedly and catches Carly but doesn't seem angry with her. He suggests that they can sneak away somewhere to have dinner together and Sonny and Jason don't have to know. Carly leaves his room and heads to GH. She finds out that Michael just hurt his arm and Michael tells her that Alexis' daughter is sick. Carly goes over to see Alexis. Alexis asks her to find out somehow what Sonny's medical history is to see if Kristina inherited some kind of illness or not. Carly warns her that if she asks Sonny too many questions he is going to get suspicious. Ric goes to the hospital and thanks Sonny for calling him about Alexis. Ric asks Sonny if he would be willing to give him his medical history if he ever had a child who was sick and needed that information. Sonny tells him he would do anything for a child and that Ric should know that.

Jason goes to see Durant at his hotel room at his request. He asks Durant what he wants. Durant tells him he wants him to stop interfering in his relationship with his daughter. Jason asks him what he plans to do if he refuses to stop interfering. Durant threatens to go after Courtney in retaliation.
Sonny visited Alexis and Kristina, at Michael's urging, to check the little girl's condition. Michael also wondered why Kristina's father was not with her during the crisis. The tests showed that Kristina had a virus that should subside within a few days.

Durant warned Jason not to interfere where Carly was concerned, or he might have to make it look like Courtney's foundation has mob money flowing through it. Sonny did not take this threat seriously, but he did ask Jason to attend the press conference.

Durant and Ric started the press conference, with Alcazar and Jason among those in attendance. The hit woman continued posing as a reporter. Carly walked onto the scene, and Durant urged her to join him on stage. Finally, she did. As he hugged her, Lana fired shots at Durant. Carly and her father both fell to the ground!

John calls Carly to the podium during his press conference, and a livid Carly finds herself with no choice but to oblige her father's wishes and pretend to be enjoying the situation. She heads toward him and he pulls her into an embrace. As he releases and she steps back, shots ring out and everyone falls to the ground. Lana, Alcazar's hired hit woman, successfully shoots John in the chest and immediately disposes of her gun in Jason's coat pocket. Jason, meanwhile has rushed to help Carly, but finds that she is unhurt in the melee. Alcazar, stunned that Carly came into the line of fire, also attempts to help her, but she runs to her father and is devastated to see that he's barely clinging to life. She begs her dad to hold on, and they rush him to GH. Jason prepares to follow her, but first grabs his jacket and realizes that a gun has been planted in it.  Lucky and the PCPD grab him. They take the gun from him and place him under arrest.

At the hospital, Michael is shocked to see his mother in a shooting on television. Sonny blocks Michaels view from the TV while he frantically searches the screen for Carly. Seeing her get up from the ground, he realizes that she's okay. She later calls Sonny, and he reports to Michael that his mom is fine. Alexis sees the press conference events as well, and immediately accuses Sonny of trying to murder Ric. Michael eavesdrops on their conversation, and later shows apparent happiness at Durant's shooting. Sonny leaves the room to find Carly, but returns later and expresses anger at Michael's disobedience. Michael offers his dad congratulations on a successful job, and Sonny is stunned to realize his son thinks that he put out the hit on John Durant.     

Carly accompanies her father to the hospital, where a concerned Steven meets them and preps John for surgery. Carly is allowed a few private moments with her father, and he awakens long enough to tell her how happy he is to have her in his life. Carly cries as she demands that her dad pull through so that they can get to know each other and have a life together. John tells her that he loves her, and then Steven comes into the room to wheel him away. As she watches her father leave for surgery, Carly whispers to him that she loves him as well. She later breaks down in Sonny's arms, and he tries to be there for her despite his conflicting feelings. And when Ric confronts him over the shooting, Carly angrily defends Sonny. It's Ric's announcement about the gun being found in Jason's coat that stuns Carly, however, and when Jason arrives at GH she tearfully confronts him about shooting her father.     

Sonny is devastated at the effects his lifestyle is having on Michael, and he gently tries to explain to Michael that he didn't try to have John killed. Unable to find a way to explain his business to his son without lying, Sonny goes to the chapel and prays for God's assistance. Ric overhears his brother's prayers and tells Sonny that he must lie to Michael to protect him from the type of man that Sonny is. Sonny tells Ric that he doesn't care about his opinion, but Ric reminds Sonny that he's a murderer, and admitting that to Michael would ruin the boy's life. Visibly upset, Sonny returns to Michael's room and harshly explains to the boy that killing is wrong, and that Michael will never kill someone.     

In the hospital lobby, Carly confronts Jason on shooting her father, but Jason is stunned that she would believe such a thing. He reminds her that he would never put her in danger, and he explains that he was setup. Carly apologizes to him, and tells him she knows he'd never hurt her.     

Carly goes into John's recovery room, and sits with him while he remains unconscious. She quietly begs him to recover so that they can make memories together, and the sound of her voice awakens him. He is thankful that his daughter is there with him, and Carly promises that although his job makes things difficult, she wants to take advantage of their second chance at a relationship. John is thrilled to feel his daughter's love, and he later tells Steven how happy it makes him. Steven asks him what will happen next, and while John clearly is happy at his newfound closeness with Carly, he still has every intention of taking down Sonny.     

Sonny visits John Durant at GH. Durant asks him if he came alone because he plans to finish what Jason started. Sonny denies he ordered Jason to kill him because he loves his wife and wouldn't want to see her hurt, mourning her father. Durant seems to believe him and tells Carly when she shows up that he thinks Sonny really loves her. Sonny leaves them alone to talk. Carly finds Steven and asks him about whether Durant is capable of threatening to ruin an innocent woman to pressure someone to back off. Steven tells her Durant would do that if he could get an arrest. Carly asks Steven to look over the forensic evidence to see if he finds more evidence.

Sonny finds Sam drilling Jason with questions about the day of the shooting. Jason asks Sam to wait outside while he discusses business with Sonny. Sonny and Jason discuss the shooting. Sonny suspects Alcazar is behind the shooting. Jason remembers seeing a woman talking to Alcazar and that the same woman was there at the press conference. They realize she probably was hired by Alcazar to shoot and kill Durant and frame them for murder but that he almost stepped in when he saw Carly come up to the podium but it was too late to stop the shooting. Sonny returns to GH. Carly suggests asking Durant to do her favor and help clear Jason of attempted murder charges. Sonny refuses to go along with that plan and tells her he has his own plan to clear Jason without owing Durant any favors.

Bobbie attended Morgan's birthday party, along with Carly, Sonny, Courtney, and Michael. A package arrived for Morgan, a stuffed animal from Durant. Carly wanted to take Morgan to the hospital to visit Durant and thank him personally. Sonny decided he would go with her. Durant granted Carly the favor of saying that he did not see Jason with a gun at the press conference and used Steven's forensic evidence of the latent print on the gun in order to grow closer to his daughter. Jason was released from custody.

After performing additional tests on Kristina, Steven comes out to tell Ric and Alexis that Kristina is suffering bone marrow failure which can be life threathening. Sonny was standing nearby, hearing that Kristina was in need of a bone marrow transplant preferably from one of her parents! Alexis is utterly devastated by the news that her daughter requires a bone marrow transplant, and Steven quickly has her tested as a potential donor.

Carly hears the news of Kristina's condition, and asks Alexis if she's going to tell Sonny the truth. Alexis feels she still has options, and begs Carly to trust her judgment that Sonny does not yet need to find out the truth. Carly hopes Alexis knows what she's doing, but clearly grows concerned about the situation. Ned arrives, prepared to be tested himself, and warns Alexis that the doctors will realize he is not Kristina's biological father. Ned is tested but is not a match. Alexis calls Nikolas to be tested, and is further devastated when he proves to also not be a match for Kristina.

Carly and John continue to discuss Sonny's feelings toward John being in their lives, and Carly warns him that Sonny won't ever get used to it. John asks to speak to Sonny about the motives behind having Jason released, and Carly promises to have Sonny stop by. Later, Sonny confronts John, and has no interest in hearing excuses. He tells John that Jason did not shoot him, and just as he begins to insinuate another's guilt, Alcazar walks into the room and suggests that he's the man Sonny is speaking of. John thinks that Sonny might have a point, and Carly later overhears the men agree that Alcazar had a motive for shooting John, despite his denial of the deed. Carly leaves the hospital with Morgan and finds herself in an elevator with Alcazar. She tries to avoid him, but he asks how she's been doing. She tells him she knows that he probably tried to kill her father, and when he asks what his motivation would be, she tells him that he thinks he could win her back with Sonny out of the picture. Carly makes it clear that he has no chance with her ever, but Alcazar tells her that he still loves her.

Alcazar admits that he continues to love Carly, and she replies that she wishes she could hate him, but doesn't. She implores him to leave Port Charles and find happiness, but he tells her he no longer has anything left to lose, and has no intention of playing his life safely. The elevator reaches the hospital lobby, where Sonny is standing as he sees his wife and Alcazar inside. Alcazar reminds Sonny that a year ago he shot him and also shot his pregnant wife in the head, and then he walks away. Sonny decides Alcazar thinks he's owed by him, so he follows him toward Durant's room and threatens Alcazar if he doesn't stay away from Carly. Ric overhears Sonny's threat and angrily drags his brother away. He warns Sonny to watch himself so he can be alive and safe if his children ever need him in the future.

Carly goes to Alexis again to inquire about the status of informing Sonny that he's Kristina's father, but Alexis continues to hold out on it until the last minute. Concerned for Kristina's well being, Carly confides to Steven that Sonny is her real father. She asks him to allow Alexis to make the decision unless things take a turn for the worse, in which case he's to tell Carly so that she can break the news to Sonny. Later, she sits on the docks and worries about Kristina's situation. Sonny happens upon her, and offers her comfort, telling her they'll find a donor for the little girl.

Steven meets with Ric and Alexis in Kristina's room and encourages Alexis to make sure that all of Kristina's close relatives are tested. After Alexis talks to Sam, Alexis asks Steven how old a child must be to donate bone marrow and Steven replies that a child would have to be at least one year old. Steven again urges Alexis to approach Kristina's biological father as soon as possible so that Kristina's father and his relatives can be tested for matching bone marrow.

Just as it seems that Alexis is about to tell Jason that Sonny is Kristina's father, Steven arrives with the news that a donor for Kristina has been found. Alexis is relieved and tells Jason that she just wanted to thank him for having the bone-marrow test done to help Kristina.

Jason arrives at Sonny's just as Carly is about to explain and tell Sonny about Kristina being his daughter and how she knew about it. Jason's interruption stops her from telling Sonny the truth when he announces to them that they found a bone-marrow donor for Kristina. Carly tells Sonny that what she had to tell him wasn't that important and tells them she is going to go visit her father at G.H. Sonny finds the sudden change in Carly's demeanor strange but shrugs it off. Jason informs Sonny that Alcazar hijacked one of their shipments. Sonny tells Jason that Alcazar knows that he can't retaliate since Durant overheard Sonny threaten to kill Alcazar before and that if Alcazar ends up dead, he will be charged with 1st degree murder.
Carly tells Steven that she can't tell Sonny that Kristina is his child now but almost did earlier since Sonny wouldn't be able to get past that and forgive her for keeping that secret. Carly goes to see Durant. Durant tells her he is going to have follow-up surgery in Manhattan. Carly offers to go with him back to New York City and be there for him when he has the surgery. Carly tells Sonny about her plans. Sonny isn't pleased but doesn't say no. Carly wheels Durant after he is released. Durant had talked to Steven and told him he hoped that his relationship with Carly is solid enough to withstand the fact that he will some day put her husband behind bars.

As Carly leaves with Durant, Sonny hears a distraught Alexis arguing with Steven. He approaches them. Steven tells him that the woman who was a bone-marrow donor for Kristina was killed in a car accident on the way to the hospital. Steven tries to reassure her that they will find another donor and that someone out there will be a match. Durant's ex-wife warns Carly that he only gets close to people if he wants something from them. Durant admits to Steven that he likes having a daughter, and that Carly is more important to him than his vendetta against Sonny.

Carly arrives at the hospital and tells Alexis that she, not Alexis, will be the person to tell Sonny that he's Kristina's father. Before she goes, though, she berates Alexis for the months of bullying and threats that Carly had to take from her, and she angrily chastises Alexis for not allowing her to be truthful to Sonny when they reconciled. Alexis apologizes for the situation that she put Carly in, but tries to explain that she simply wanted to protect her daughter. Carly counters that Alexis really just wanted to have everything her way, and now that she has caused a horrible situation she will have to pay the consequences. A terrified Carly runs off to tell her husband the truth, and likely end her happiness. Meanwhile, Ric is still smarting from not being a donor match and being unable to help Alexis keep the truth from Sonny.     

Carly arrives at the penthouse tearful and afraid that she's about to blow her life with Sonny apart. Sonny is concerned immediately by the _expression on her face, but before she tells him what is troubling her, she has him sit with her and she basks in what could be her final moments with the man she loves. The two share wine and make love for possibly the last time, and then Carly grows increasingly upset when Sonny asks again what is wrong. He asks her if she's in trouble, and she says yes. He then reminds her that he'll do whatever he has to do in order to help her, and she asks him to get himself to the hospital quickly. When Sonny wants to know why, Carly tearfully tells him that he needs to be tested as a donor match for Kristina because he's her father.     

A devastated Carly admits not only that Sonny is Kristina's father, but also that she's known for months. Sonny remains calm for the most part, and decides that the situation will have to be discussed after he checks in on Kristina. On his way to be tested, he notifies Courtney and Mike and has them come to the hospital to be tested as well. Jason joins them as Sonny announces that he's Kristina's father, and all are stunned to find out that Carly told him the news. Courtney immediately goes to her friend and sympathized with Carly's fears that her marriage is now over. She reminds Carly that Sonny has done plenty of wrong himself, and Carly has always forgiven him. Carly scoffs at the idea that Sonny would stoop to forgive her, and continues to fear the worst. Later, Jason arrives at the penthouse and Carly prepares for a lecture on her actions.     

Steven informs Sonny that he, Mike, and Courtney are all unsuitable matches for Kristina, so Sonny decides that Morgan will have to be tested. He is clearly angry at Carly for keeping the truth from him, and he goes into Kristina's room to see his daughter. There, he tells her that he's her dad and that once she's better they will get to know each other. Alexis walks into the room, and is stunned to see that Sonny is there. He ignores her and continues to talk to Kristina, and Alexis realizes that Carly has told him the truth.     

At Sonny's Penthouse, Carly tries to explain to Jason her reasons for keeping the secret of Kristina's paternity from Sonny. Meanwhile, Sonny visits Kristina in the little girl's hospital room and begins promising Kristina that they will be together for the rest of Sonny's life. Alexis arrives in time to hear Sonny making plans and asks to speak to Sonny outside, but Sonny brushes aside Alexis' request, insisting that he needs to spend some time with his daughter. Carly reminds Jason of the way that Jason helped Carly keep A.J. and the Quartermaines from learning that A.J. was Michael's biological father because Jason and Carly both believed that, if A.J. was allowed to be in Michael's life, it would ruin Michael's life. Jason points out that since making an attempt to keep the secret that Sonny was the father of Samantha's unborn child, Jason has come to believe that keeping the secret was the wrong thing to do. Jason warns Carly that he has no plans to jump in this time and try to fix things for Carly. When Leticia arrives with Morgan, Carly gets Morgan ready to leave for the hospital. Meanwhile, after Sonny leaves Kristina's room, Alexis reports that there is no word about another donor. Sonny reports that Sonny, Mike and Courtney were not viable matches for Kristina, so Carly is bringing Morgan to the Hospital. As Alexis tries to thank Sonny, Sonny coldly assures Alexis that she should know that Sonny and his family would all want to do everything possible to help save Kristina's life. Ric arrives while Sonny is still speaking and begins to tell Sonny that Ric and Alexis appreciate Sonny's gesture. Sonny coldly declares that none of this concerns Ric. Ric replies that it does concern Ric, because Ric and Alexis plan to be married that evening.     

Outside Kristina's hospital room, Alexis, Ric and Sonny engage in a heated conversation as Alexis tries to convince Sonny that if he genuinely cares about his daughter, Sonny would want Kristina to be protected from her father's violent, mobster life. When Carly arrives with Morgan, Alexis tries to remind Carly that Carly not so long ago pleaded with Alexis to help Carly keep custody of her own children when Sonny was determined to make sure that Carly never saw her children again. But Carly coldly informs Alexis that Alexis can no longer use the 'mother card' with Carly. When Ric lets slip that he wants to protect Kristina from Sonny's mobster lifestyle because Ric had not been able to save his own mother from Sonny's violent lifestyle, Sonny angrily vows that Sonny will have his daughter with him. When Sonny observes that Ric's marriage to Alexis is probably an attempt to keep Sonny out of Kristina's life, Ric sharply reminds Sonny that the only thing that ever seems to come out of Sonny's mouth are words like 'me,' and 'mine.' Ric points out that the only thing that seems to mean anything to Sonny is what or who 'belongs' to Sonny. Sonny brushes off Ric's arguments and hurries Carly and Morgan away to be tested.     

Sonny and Carly return to Sonny's penthouse after having Morgan tested and Carly is stunned when Sonny declares that he is moving out of their bedroom. Carly tries to explain her reasons for keeping the secret of Kristina's paternity for so long and reminds Sonny that, at the time that Carly learned the truth, Sonny was involved with Sam and telling Carly that he planned to keep Carly completely away from Michael and Morgan. Carly admits that she blackmailed Alexis into representing Carly during the custody hearing but argues that Carly refused to go along with Alexis' plan to paint Sonny as mentally unstable in order to win the case. Carly reminds Sonny of the many, many times that Carly has forgiven Sonny's betrayals, including moving Sonny's pregnant girlfriend into the apartment across the hall. But Sonny insists that he believes that he and Carly have outlooks on life that are so completely at odds with one another that their only hope is to live separately.     

Carly has her hands full when Michael starts asking a bunch of questions about where Sonny is and what is happening with Kristina. Carly tells him that Leticia will be taking him to soccer practice and that Sonny is still at the hospital. Michael isn't pleased with this news at all and storms to the door. There is a knock on the door. Michael answers it and isn't happy to see John Durant there. He tells John to go away and slams the door in his face. Carly gets upset with Michael and tells him to apologize to John. Michael refuses to. Carly sends him out with Leticia and Morgan. Michael manages to sneak back into the penthouse without Leticia's awareness. He sits behind the couch while Carly and John discuss what has happened. Michael gets upset when he overhears John telling Carly that she is better off not being married to Sonny and suggests she move out with the kids. Carly asks him about his own divorce and if he was devastated by it. John tells her he was disappointed. Carly defends Sonny still since she didn't tell Sonny about Kristina. John tells her that she has done nothing unforgivable and that Sonny has disappointed and hurt her so many times already. John tells her that if Sonny tries to get custody of the boys he will use his power to keep Sonny away from the boys and send him to prison. Michael jumps up from behind the couch and starts hitting John and telling him to leave Sonny alone. Carly is surprised to see Michael there and grabs him away from John. Carly tells Michael that her marriage to his father may not work out and that it won't be like before where a judge was involved. John tells Michael that he isn't going to hurt Sonny. Michael calls him a liar and that he hates him. He lashes out at Carly and blames her for the possible divorce since she lied to Sonny. He tells Carly he and Morgan are not leaving their home with her and tells her she should leave by herself. He tells Carly he hates her and runs upstairs.     

Sonny goes to see Kristina in I.C.U. He asks her if she has ever been to the ocean and promises to take her when she gets better. Alexis overhears him talking to her. She asks if she can talk to him outside. Alexis asks Sonny not to see their daughter right now since Kristina doesn't know him and she is already in a strange place already. Sonny tells Alexis that he isn't going to be kept away from his daughter anymore. Alexis starts crying and tells him she doesn't want to start a custody battle and that the main reason she kept Kristina away from him was that she was worried for her safety because of his dangerous lifestyle. Sonny tells her that she never thought about how he would feel about being a father and that now she is making decisions without his say. Ric comes over and tells Sonny to back off and think about what is best for Kristina and not himself for a change. Sonny tells Ric to stay away from his daughter. Alexis leaves them to argue and goes to check on Kristina. Sonny accuses Ric of using this situation to get back at him once again. Ric tells Sonny that he cares about Kristina and will fight him in court if he has to keep Sonny away from Kristina. Sonny tells Ric that Kristina is his child and no one takes what belongs to him ever.     

Sonny goes to the hospital chapel to pray for Kristina. He pleads with God to spare Kristina's life since she doesn't deserve to die because he was her father. Steven shows up to talk to him about alternative treatments for Kristina. He tells Sonny about chemotherapy and another more risky treatment, using stem cells from Sam's baby's umbilical cord to create new bone marrow for Kristina if there is a match. Alexis shows up at the chapel to find Steven and overhears him talking to Sonny about the stem-cell treatment using Sam's baby. Alexis tells Sonny that they need Sam to agree to it and go for it. Sonny asks to speak to Alexis alone. Alexis tells Sonny that Sam's baby is there only hope and they need to try this. Sonny tells Alexis that Sam needs to agree to this since it is her baby too and there is a 10% risk to the baby if you induce labor.     

Carly and Durant continued talking at the penthouse. Michael came downstairs with a packed suitcase, and Carly told him that he was not going to be allowed to run away again. Michael informed her that he had packed her bags and that she needed to leave since she was a liar. Durant took charge and forced Michael to understand the importance of a mother. Michael apologized. Durant suggested to Carly that, if indeed her marriage was over, he find somewhere to live in Port Charles where she could live with him. Carly was touched but said she had lived alone before and could again, if necessary. Durant's stitches broke open, and Carly accompanied him to the hospital. There, Carly was able to offer some comfort to Sonny.     

Alexis was thrilled as she told Ric the news of the stem cell solution. Ric was not so sure that Sonny would risk the life of another of his children to save Kristina. Sam told Sonny that she would gladly risk herself for Kristina but that she could not take the 10% chance of harming her baby by inducing labor early.     

Sonny was visibly saddened, but he understood her decision. Speaking with Jason, Sam continued to wrestle with the choice. Sonny told Alexis the news, and she freaked out, telling Sonny to make Sam do it. Later, Alexis found Sam alone in the chapel and begged for her help. The discussion was intense and highly emotional. Finally, Sam screamed out that she would help. Suddenly, she clutched her stomach in pain. Something was wrong with the baby!     

Carly hugs Sonny as he fears for Kristina's life, and he apologizes for bringing her into the situation. They are interrupted by Sam being wheeled into the operating room. As an unconscious Sam goes into surgery, Jason unleashes his anger at Alexis for causing Sam to collapse. Sonny is shocked when he hears the news, and he immediately blasts Alexis as well. Steven emerges from the OR and assures them all that no one is to blame for the situation, but warns that Sam has a ruptured placenta and is in serious danger. Sonny and Jason immediately ask about the baby, and Steven tells them that the baby is at risk and an emergency caesarian will have to be performed immediately. Carly tries to comfort both Jason, but he's inconsolable at the idea of Sam's baby dying. He tells Carly how Sam was so excited to be a mom, and that he promised he'd be there for her when the baby was born.

Alexis is fearful that her actions caused Sam's collapse, and she tells Ric what happened. Ric asks Steven about the situation, and Steven reiterates that Alexis had nothing to do with Sam's situation. Ric then inquires as to whether the stem cells will be viable for Kristina if the baby dies, and Steven assures him that they will. Sonny walks up behind Ric and prepares to start a fight, but Carly interrupts them to tell Sonny that Sam's baby has died. Sonny shouts out in grief, and both Ric and Carly clearly feel pain for him. Ric returns to Alexis and tell her that the baby has died. He tries to ease her panic by letting her know it had nothing to do with her, but he prepares her that she is going to have to now ask Sonny for the stem cell donation.

Jason tearfully spends a quiet moment with Sam's baby, Sonny walks up and demands to see his dead daughter. Jason emerges and refuses to allow Sonny in the room, telling him it's for the best that he not see the baby, and both men collapse against each other in tears. A short while later, Jason returns to the operating room to sit with Sam, and Alexis and Ric approach Sonny and Carly outside in the waiting area. Realizing she has no more time to waste, Alexis tries to carefully deal with the situation of the stem cells. She apologizes profusely for Sonny's loss, but he rips into her and tells her that she's selfish and cold. Alexis begs him to think about the fact that Kristina is also his daughter, and that she, too, will die if he doesn't act soon. Steven enters the lobby with them all, and warns Sonny and Alexis that the stem cells from the baby's cord need to be processed immediately if they are to remain viable for Kristina. In the OR, Jason tries to quietly explain that the baby died to an unconscious Sam. He begs her to get better, saying her daughter would want that, but the machine begins to beep and he realizes that Sam has taken a turn for the worse.     

Alexis begs Sonny to sign over his dead daughter's stem cells in order to save Kristina. Sonny in turn blasts Alexis for her selfishness, and tells her he wants to be left alone to grieve. Alexis reminds Sonny that Kristina is also his daughter, and that she will die if he doesn't act soon. Ric tries to comfort Alexis, but once Steven emerges to discuss the situation, Alexis is relieved to hear Sonny give his permission to use the stem cells that are needed. Steven immediately begins processing the tests, and plans to have Kristina's infusion the next day. Sonny then demands to see Kristina, and although Alexis tentatively tries to get him to stay out of her room, he warns her that he'll see as much of his daughter as he likes. He sits with Kristina for a while, and tells her that he doesn't know if he can forgive the people who want to keep him away from her, but he promises he'll see her every day from now on.     

Carly walks up to Steven in the hospital lobby, and she asks him to be honest with her about Kristina's chances after the stem cell infusion. Steven tells her that he's hopeful it will work out, and she thanks him for being such a good person. Steven tells Carly that he thinks she, too, is a good person and is far better than she gives herself credit for being. Carly informs Michael about the death of Samantha's baby and Michael suggests that they should all go to the Hospital to let Sonny know about their support.     

In Kristina's hospital room, as Alexis gets Kristina prepared for surgery, Sonny arrives. As Alexis begins to fill Sonny in on Kristina's condition, Ric arrives and asks Sonny to leave Alexis and Kristina alone until the surgery is over. When Sonny stubbornly refuses to leave, Ric produces a restraining order, which orders Sonny to stay away from Kristina. Storming out of Kristina's room, Sonny angrily rips up the restraining order, but Ric warns Sonny that tearing up the document will not do anything to change the fact that the law has ordered Sonny to stay away from Kristina. Sonny angrily warns Ric that Sonny plans to wreck anyone who stands between Sonny and Sonny's daughter. Alexis leaves Kristina's room and begs Sonny and Ric to stop threatening each other, but Sonny coldly informs Alexis that he is stating a fact not merely making a threat. After Sonny leaves, Alexis demands to know why Ric produced the restraining order at just that moment. Ric explains that he just did not want Sonny to show up as they were ready to take Kristina into surgery and cause an emotionally draining scene, which is precisely what Sonny did. They are interrupted by Nikolas, who assures Alexis of his support. Steven arrives shortly afterward to take Kristina to surgery.     

Carly and Michael find Sonny in the chapel and assure Sonny of their support. Later, Bobbie takes Michael to the cafeteria and Sonny fills Carly in on Samantha's condition. Carly reminds Sonny that she plans to support him whether they are married or not. Sonny and Carly are interrupted when Durant arrives to express his support and Elizabeth informs Sonny that Kristina is on her way to the Operating Room. John takes Carly and Michael to Carly's old home and announces that John just bought the place and has installed a skateboard ramp outside for Michael. But Michael declares that he is not impressed and goes back to the car. After Michael leaves, John announces to Carly that he bought the house for Carly and her children. Carly sadly informs John that she can not accept his gift, but John urges Carly to begin taking care of herself. John leaves, after giving the keys to Carly. When Michael returns and finds Carly uncovering the furniture, Carly tries to explain that Carly, Michael and Morgan may be moving back to their old cottage, but Michael insists that Michael plans to stay with Sonny. As Michael and Carly argue, Lorenzo suddenly shows up on Carly's doorstep.     

Sonny catches up with Ric and Alexis as Steven wheels Kristina into surgery. Even as Ric assures Alexis that Kristina will be okay, Alexis breaks down in tears and cries on Sonny's shoulder. After Kristina goes into surgery, Sonny stops by Sam's room and asks Jason about Sam's condition. When Sonny worries about being able to break the bad news to Sam about her lost baby, Sonny is surprised when Jason insists that Jason wants to be the one to tell Sam about the death of her daughter. Sonny observes that Jason has come to truly care about Sam, and Jason admits that Sonny is right.     

Alcazar shows up at the house John bought for Carly to talk to her. Michael tells him to go away and leave his mother alone. Michael runs upstairs. Alcazar tells her he heard that her marriage to Sonny is over again and suggests they become friends again since Sonny won't seem to mind. Carly tells him that there has been no decision reached concerning her marriage to Sonny and even if she was getting a divorce doesn't mean she wants to have anything to do with him. Alcazar leaves. Michael lashes out at Carly about the possibility of moving to the new house again. Carly grabs Michael and makes it clear to him that he will treat her with respect and that he will not tell her what to do.     

When Ric and Alexis arrive at Kristina's room, following the surgery, Alexis is stunned to find that Sonny is not only already with Kristina but that Sonny is telling Kristina that, when the little girl leaves the hospital, Kristina will be going home with him! Alexis approaches him and tells him that he will not be taking their daughter away from her. Sonny steps out of the room to talk to Alexis and Ric. Alexis asks Sonny to not say things to Kristina because it will scare her right now. She tells Sonny that she doesn't doubt he loves his children and wants to protect them but she feels he can't ever protect them with his lifestyle and pleads with him to stay out of her life for good. Sonny tells Alexis and Ric he will not be kept away from his child. Alexis asks Ric to help protect her daughter and fight Sonny but do it with grace and not out of revenge against Sonny. Ric tells her that he is going to fight Sonny for the right reasons this time, to protect her and Kristina and he promises to make sure Sonny doesn't get custody of Kristina. Sonny goes home.     

Michael makes it clear to Sonny that he will not be moving into a new house and that he wants to keep living with Sonny. Sonny asks him what he is talking about. Michael tells him that Carly's father bought back their old home as a gift to Carly. Sonny sits down with Michael and assures him that no matter what happens to him and Carly they will still love him.  Sonny tells Michael that he has to go back to the hospital to see Kristina. Michael asks him to tell her that he hopes she feels better soon. Carly sits with Michael, who is still upset with her. Her father shows up and surprises her when he forbids her to stay with Sonny in the marriage.     

Sonny shows up to see Kristina but Ric tells him he can't go in to see Kristina because he is enforcing the restraining order he has against him to be near Kristina. Sonny ignores Ric and tries to enter her room. A cop is guarding her room. Ric informs Sonny that if he tries to step into Kristina's room he will have him arrested. Carly decides to move herself, Michael and Morgan into the house in the country. While packing up their stuff at the penthouse, Michael inadvertently packs one of Sonny's files. Unfortunately, the file could be Sonny's ticket to prison!     

Sonny is notified of Kristina's turn for the worse, and he rushes to find Alexis and Ric in the room. Ric blasts his brother for the fact that Kristina began to cough up blood while Sonny's lawyer was harassing them about the custody case, but Alexis tells both men to give it a rest. After Steven returns to tell them that Kristina is better and on the mend, Sonny demands to be there when she wakes up. Alexis calmly reminds him that Kristina doesn't feel well and is frightened, and regardless of blame, she does not know who Sonny is, and he might make the situation worse. Sonny allows Kristina's well being to be put first, and agrees that Alexis should be the one who Kristina sees when she wakes up.     

Sam is shaken by the news that Sonny authorized the removal of stem cells from her baby's umbilical cord and accuses Sonny of being glad that their baby didn't make it. A grieving Sam lashes out at Sonny over his approval of the use of their daughter's stem cells. Sam accuses Sonny of being happy the baby died, and of only caring about Kristina and his children with Carly. Sonny tells her she's wrong and reminds her that the baby was his child too, but Jason suggests that Sonny leave the room until Sam calms down.     

Carly and Michael pack up their stuff at the penthouse, and prepare to move themselves and Morgan out. Carly calls John and tells him that they are moving into the cottage that evening, and John gloats about it to Sonny. John warns Sonny that his daughter is his business, and he's thrilled she's leaving him after the danger Sonny has put her in, and the two children he's fathered outside of their marriage. Later, Carly tells Sonny in person that they are moving out, and he asks her to reconsider. She explains to him that she can no longer live in wonder if he'll want her to stay or he'll want to throw her out, and she has to find stability for Michael and Morgan. Unable to tell her how he'll feel in a day or so, Sonny accepts the fact that she's moving out. Later, Carly tries to finish boxing up her family's things, when John arrives at the penthouse ready to help her and Michael with their boxes. Carly thanks her father for all that he's done for her, and despite Michael's cool treatment, John seems genuinely happy to be with his daughter and grandson. Michael tries to finish packing his comic books, but accidentally knocks over the box. John sits down to help box the stuff again, and notices that Michael inadvertently packed a file of Sonny's. As Meyer desperately tries to explain the one incriminating file that remains to Sonny, John is back at the penthouse with evidence in his reach that could finally put his son-in-law in prison.     

A frantic Meyer explains to Sonny that he left the file on Sonny's desk, and it is imperative that it not falls into the wrong hands. Sonny calms Meyer down, and tells him that he'll go home that minute and look for it. When he arrives at the penthouse, however, Sonny is unable to find the file. He rushes over to Carly's new house, and tries to search the boxes. He asks Carly if she's seen it, but she says that she hasn't, and Sonny quickly calls Meyer and tells him the file is missing. Meyer promises to try and locate it. The minute he hangs up the phone, he's approached by John who holds the file out in front of him. Meyer attempts to play dumb and then requests a lawyer, but John gives him the file back and promises to help him when the time comes. When Meyer asks about Sonny, a gleeful John says that the file is a textbook for money laundering, and Sonny is about to be put away for life for all of his RICO violations.     

Back at the cottage, Carly asks Sonny if the only thing he needs is to find the file, but he says that he also wanted to see the boys. He tries to help Michael understand why he and Carly are splitting up again, but Michael refuses to listen to him and runs up to his room. Sonny then turns toward Carly, who is in obvious pain over their most recent separation. She apologizes for moving out so quickly, but says she had to do it before Sonny decided he wanted to throw her out. She asks Sonny to decide where they stand once and for all, and Sonny, unable to forgive Carly for her lie despite having so many of his own, tells her their marriage is over. Although she heard nothing she didn't expect, Carly is crushed as Sonny leaves the cottage. She sits down on her couch and sobs, until Michael comes back downstairs and lovingly tries to protect his mother. The boy puts his arm around Carly, and tells her that it will be okay and that he'll take care of her from now on.     

Sonny looks at a cross that he bought as a gift for his daughter as Carly and Michael arrive and announce that they plan to attend the memorial service with him. Afterwards, Carly and Michael return home with Sonny. Although Michael expresses his intent to stick around to cheer Sonny up, Sonny asks Carly and Michael to pick Morgan up and take Morgan to play in the park as a way of honoring Sam's baby.
Durant joins Carly in the park. Michael rudely orders his grandfather to go away. John merely wishes Carly well and leaves. Sonny visits the baby's grave and confides the plans he had made for his daughter, which will never transpire now. When he leaves, Sonny leaves behind the cross that he bought for the baby.     

Sonny and Jason question their financial advisor about where the important confidential file could have landed after they can't find it. The financial advisor, Myers, had taken the file out of his briefcase and had placed it near the other table on the floor before Sonny and Jason entered the room. Myers suggests that one of Sonny's kids took it. Sonny insists they don't have the file. Myers looks around the room and points out that he sees the file on the floor near the other table in the corner. Sonny tells him that it wasn't there before. Myers suggests that maybe it landed there later. Sonny warns Myers that he better not be trying to set him up or there will be consequences. While this is going on, Sonny and Jason meet with his new lawyer, who wants to bring up the fact that Alexis harassed Sam like she did in court to help portray her as an unfit mother. Sonny refuses to allow her to do that in court since he can understand why Alexis would do that since she was distraught and brings up that what happened to Sam wasn't really Alexis fault. His lawyer tells him that now is not the time to use kid gloves since Alexis won't do the same in court. His lawyer tells him that she is already going to have Carly and Michael take the stand in his defense as a good father. Carly and Michael show up to see Sonny. Michael tells him he wants to take the stand and tell the court what a good father Sonny is and how great it is to live with him. Michael does feel threatened when Sonny tells him that he wants Kristina to live with him. Michael asks him why she can live with Sonny but not him and Morgan. Carly and Sonny reassure him that he will always have a room at Sonny's even if he lives with Carly.     

Carly heads to the docks. Durant sees her hiding around the corner while he is talking to Ric about the evidence he has against Sonny in his possession. Durant does an about-face and tells Ric to destroy the evidence since it doesn't come from a reliable source and that he will make a fool of himself in court by presenting the evidence in court. Ric asks Durant if he is saying this to protect his daughter. Durant denies it. Ric tells him that Carly will be fine and will be better off without Sonny. Durant tries to persuade Ric to drop the evidence. Ric is adamant that he has concrete evidence that looks legitimate enough to bring charges against Sonny. Ric takes off. Carly comes over to Durant and asks him to try and stop Ric from using the evidence. Durant tells her he will try his best but Ric seemed determined to arrest Sonny.     

Sonny shows up at the hospital to see Kristina. Alexis sees him in the hallway as he is getting ready to go into Kristina's room. She asks him to leave Kristina alone for now since she is so tired and weak still and doesn't know him. Sonny tells her he won't allow her to push him away since he is her father and has rights. Alexis pleads with him to put Kristina's needs before his own and let her rest. Steven comes over and tells them that from the tests he ran on Kristina it looks like the bone marrow is working. Sonny thanks Steven for saving Morgan first and then saving his other daughter's life and tells him he won't forget what he has done for him. Ric, Lucky, and another uniformed cop show up. Sonny asks Lucky what he is doing there. Lucky tells him he is sorry but he came to arrest him. Sonny thinks he is being arrested for the restraining order Ric got to keep him away from Kristina and tells Ric that he had that restraining order revoked. Ric tells him he came to arrest him on other charges such as tax fraud, extortion, and money laundering. Sonny looks at Alexis accusingly.     

Determined to destroy the evidence Ric has against Sonny, Carly sneaks into his apartment. Carly breaks into Ric's file cabinet and locates his evidence on Sonny. She immediately begins to set paperwork on fire, and watches as the flames spread and burn any proof of her husband's misdeeds. She moves to leave the apartment when the flames grow stronger, but the front door is jammed and she finds herself trapped. Carly begins to shout for help, and Steven happens to choose that time to arrive and try to rescue her. He manages to break the door down, but Carly has meanwhile knocked herself unconscious on the living room floor. Steven carries her out of the burning apartment, and Carly comes to, gasping for breath. Once he sees she's fine, Steven tells her to run and he rushes back into the blaze despite Carly's protests. He attempts to erase any evidence that she set the fire, but he is also knocked out by the smoke. The firemen arrive, and Carly hides as she watches them rescue Steven.     

Ric warns Sonny that regardless of who gave him the evidence, he has it and it will put Sonny away for a long time. Ric expresses remorse at having been handed the proof of Sonny's misdeeds, and having to do it right after his daughter died. Sonny doesn't buy Ric's sympathy, and tells him that he'll get out of it. Justus interrupts the meeting, demanding time with Sonny. Sonny agrees to allow Justus to represent him, and Justus tells him if he can find evidence that the file on Sonny was obtained illegally, he can have it thrown out. Ric suddenly rushes back into the room, demanding that Sonny admit to having Ric's apartment set on fire. Sonny is oblivious to what happened, but Ric tells him it's too convenient, and then he goes off to find the file. Justus and Sonny think they got lucky and likely the file was burned. Both assume Jason set the blaze, but later Jason tells them that he had nothing to do with it and Sonny wonders who he now owes.     

Steven is rushed to GH, Carly shows up and rushes into Steven's room. She's relieved to see that he's all right, and she asks him why he saved her life. He admonishes her for not running like he told her to do, but he then admits that she's the most interesting person he's met in Port Charles, and he had to help her out. Carly is thankful for Steven's help, but he tells her she needs to leave before someone sees them together and ties her to the fire. Just as she gets up to go, however, Ric shows up and wants to know what the two have to do with his apartment fire. Steven says nothing about being found in the blaze, but Ric says he's certain she is behind the fire at his apartment. Carly admits to nothing, but Ric points out that despite her looming divorce from Sonny, Carly still loves her husband and would protect him at all costs. Steven demands that Ric stop harassing Carly and leave his room. Later, he asks Carly if she is still in love with Sonny, but she tells him that love is not enough for her relationship, and that it has run its course and is now over. Carly then wonders why Steven rescued her and covered for her, and it's clear that he has feelings for her.     

Sonny wonders to Jason about who might have set the fire. Neither can come up with an answer, but later at the penthouse, Sonny confronts Carly who is there to pick up something of Michael's. Carly doesn't admit or deny having set the fire, she just tells Sonny that maybe he just has someone who wants what's best for him. Sonny knows his wife is the one who helped him, but he doesn't press the issue. Carly is called away by her father, and she meets him at the docks where he warns her that Ric wants to prosecute her for arson. John comes up with an alibi for Carly, and she wants to know why he thinks she's the one who caused the fire. Jason interrupts their talk, and John leaves so that Carly can have time with him. Jason wonders what was going on with John, and Carly tells him nothing-but she wishes that Jason wouldn't hate her father so much.     

Alexis shows up at Sonny's penthouse after Carly leaves, and she pulls out the charred file of evidence against him. She hands him the file, but warns him to not set fire to it because she has several copies planted all over town. Sonny asks her what she wants from him, and she demands that he get on the stand at the custody hearing, and do for her what he did for Carly. Sonny is confused, but Alexis presses him to stand up in front of the court and tell them that Kristina belongs with her mother. She warns Sonny that if he doesn't do what she's asking, she will hand his file over to Ric and have him sent to prison.     

Durant meets with Carly to assure that they have their stories straight before Ric begins questioning Carly. Sonny shows up in Steven's hospital room and reveals that Sonny left $500,000 in Steven's apartment in gratitude for Steven's actions in saving Carly's life. Steven coldly declares that he does not want Sonny's money and did what he did for Carly, not for Sonny. Alexis arrives and, overhearing Sonny's statements about the money, Alexis accuses Sonny of attempting to bribe Steven. Sonny brushes aside Alexis's accusations and storms away from Steven's room. Alexis follows Sonny and quietly reminds Sonny that Alexis has copies of the file which incriminates Sonny in many, many criminal activities and Alexis is prepared to hand that file over to Ric unless Sonny guarantees that Alexis will have sole custody of Kristina. Sonny reluctantly agrees to go along with the plan that Alexis proposes for Kristina. Before Sonny can leave, Ric spots Alexis and Sonny together and accuses Sonny of harassing Alexis. Sonny brags that he will eventually be successful in gaining custody of Kristina, no matter what else Ric and Alexis have planned to keep Sonny from his daughter. Sonny warns Alexis about Ric's obsession with getting even with Sonny.     
Carly spots Alexis when Carly arrives at the Hospital and Carly urges Alexis to compromise with Sonny. Alexis refuses to listen to Carly's sudden moralizing. Alexis coldly reminds Carly that it was not so long ago that Carly blackmailed Alexis to represent Carly as Carly fought for custody of Carly's own two sons. Sonny meets with Jason and explains that Alexis has copies of the incriminating file and is demanding that Sonny suddenly have a change of heart while testifying and grant sole custody of Kristina to Alexis. Jason agrees that if Alexis ever does give that file to Ric, Jason and Sonny can kiss their criminal empire in Port Charles good-bye forever.

Sonny and Jason plot to prove that Ric obtained the incriminating file illegally so that Sonny can take the stand in the custody hearing and surprise Alexis with proof that the incriminating file is inadmissible because the file was obtained illegally. Later, Jason tracks Carly down at the hospital and quizzes Carly about the day that Meyer dropped the file off at the Penthouse. When Jason learns that Durant arrived after Michael packed his comic books, and that John was later alone with the packed boxes once they all arrived at the cottage, Jason begs Carly to realize that her father is still using Carly to bring Sonny to trial. Carly insists that Jason is mistaken and that Durant had nothing to do with that file, but Jason continues to suggest to Carly that it was Carly's father who slipped the incriminating file to Ric. Later, Sonny meets with his new attorney but orders Jordan not to go into court intending to grill Alexis about the confrontation that took place in the hospital chapel between Alexis and Sam just before Sam was rushed to the Emergency Room.

After learning of Jason's suspicions about her father's involvement with the incriminating file that made its way into the District Attorney's hands, Carly visits Steven in his hospital room and confides that she believes that it was John who stole the incriminating file to give to Ric. As Sam dozes in her baby's nursery, Sam dreams that she hears her baby crying in the crib. However, when Sam gets up to pick the baby up, the baby has disappeared. As Sam cries out in terror, Sonny hears Sam's screams and rushes into the nursery to comfort Sam. Sam gratefully accepts the comfort that Sonny has to offer. Sonny tries to help Sam through the pain of seeing their daughter's nursery again, and he assures her that he misses their baby, too. Alexis interrupts them as Sonny is saying goodbye to Sam, and she later reminds Sonny that he needs to have a "change of heart" during his testimony, and ask that Alexis get full and permanent custody of Kristina. Jason interrupts them, and Alexis reminds them both that if the tables were turned, Sonny would be doing everything to hold onto Kristina.

Carly confronts Steven about her father, asking him if John came to Port Charles for her or to get Sonny. Steven reluctantly admits that John's main reason for coming to PC was to take down Sonny, but he also tells her that John has since developed very strong feelings for Carly, and he genuinely loves her. Carly thanks Steven for his honesty and asks if John was the one who turned in the file on Sonny. Steven doesn't tell Carly the truth, but admits that John would be capable of such a deed. Carly leaves to confront her father, but is first detained by the police for questioning about the fire at Ric's apartment. Meanwhile, Ric threatens John to give him another copy of the file or he'll arrest Carly for arson.
