The town was abuzz regarding Hayley walking out on Alec on their wedding day. Adam told Brooke that he blamed himself. Hayley was at the beach, a crying mess, when three young men arrived. When Arlene entered, Adam told her that she was the reason Hayley bolted, and that he was going to make it his job to find out why. Tom Cudahy went to Alec's to check on him. Alec told Tom that he had no idea why Hayley bolted. The three young men began to give Hayley a hard time. She told them to get lost, but they only got more aggressive, until Mateo Santos arrived and told them to let her go. Brooke admitted to Adam that she saw Hayley snap at Arlene before she took off. Alec confided to Tom that he thought that Hayley might have been drinking. After Mateo got rid of the three guys, he introduced himself to Hayley. He asked about her wedding dress, which
she was still wearing. Hayley asked Mateo to leave, but he refused, telling her that he would not leave until she did. He offered her a beer. Alec told Tom that he was worried that Hayley was somewhere drinking herself to death. Brooke advised Adam that Hayley would have to find her own way. Adam agreed, but replied that he knew what Hayley didn't need, and that was Alec. Hayley turned down Mateo's offer for a beer... they began talking. Jack left, telling Trevor & Laurel that he wished them a great wedding and a great life, and that he'd be back in Pine Valley. Hayley and Mateo talked about Mateo's family, about how close they were and how much he loved them. Hayley talked about her own family and their dysfunction... told him about her terrific step-dad, and finding
out that he wasn't her real dad. Adam told Brooke that Hayley's life would have turned out better if she had had someone like Brooke for a mother. Brooke responded by telling Adam that he need not worry about Hayley, whose courage and strength would pull her through. Hayley broke down and cried on Mateo's shoulder.

Hayley & Mateo's Romance  Day Two -Mateo Proposes - SoapNet Airdate: 6/13/00 Original ABC Airdate: 8/96
Hayley tried to cook for Mateo, and Julia tried to help her. It was a lost cause. Meanwhile, Mateo talked to Noah and showed him the Santos family ring that he planned to give Hayley when he proposed -- later that evening. Mateo tasted Noah's drinks to help him test his bartending skills. He confessed to Noah that he was worried about the family ring, and that Hayley might find it ugly or inappropriate. Noah convinced him otherwise. Hayley talked to Julia about her love for Mateo. Mateo was drunk, and when he left, he assured Noah and Derek that he was walking home, so they did not have to worry about him driving drunk. Hayley was preparing dinner (she had resorted to peanut butter and
banana sandwiches) when Derek called her from the station and told her that a cop pulled Mateo over and took him in to the station. Hayley arrived at the police station to pick up Mateo. In his drunken state, he began to explain to her about the family ringÖshe demanded to see it. Mateo proposed... Hayley loved the ring. Maria and Dimitri discussed their regrets about sleeping together. They admitted that they felt that they owed each other their lives, but realized no one else would understand those feelings. Julia arrived at the bar and talked with Noah until she noticed Edmund. She joined him and told him that he and Maria had to make up. Edmund told Julia that he would not give up yet. Maria looked at a wedding photo of her and Edmund, and she began to cry. Edmund walked in on her crying. Marion told Tad that Liza was in love with him. Marion gave Tad details of her conversation with Liza about her love for Tad. She said that Tad should talk to Liza, and that he needed to stand by her side when she heard her options from the doctor regarding her pregnancy. Tad reflected on telling Liza that it was just sex, and not to turn it into something more. Liza went into a bar... she ordered wine, but then saw a sign with a pregnancy warning, and asked for tea instead. Tad arrived at the bar where Liza was. Erica screamed at Dr. Kinder for tricking Dimitri into thinking that they slept together. Erica questioned Dr. Kinder and he swore that nothing happened between them. Sky was angry and yelled at Janet that she wanted revenge against Kinder. Erica got a signed confession from Kinder, and then Sky walked in and stabbed Kinder with a needle. Erica and Sky started fighting as they waited for Janet -- suddenly, a dead body fell out of the closet. Sky was passed out with the body on top of her... as Erica tried to help, she didn't notice Kinder get up.

Hayley & Mateo's Romance  Day Three  The First Wedding - SoapNet Airdate: 6/14/00 Original ABC Airdate: 5/97
Hayley was in the hospital, and Mateo was there with her. And so was a priest, and Adam and Liza. They were getting married. Hayley interrupted the priest to do her own vows. She confessed her love to Mateo, and he did the same in return. Hayley and Mateo gave their "I do's," and as Adam toasted the couple, Liza exited. After his toast, Adam went out to check on her. Hayley and Mateo kissed in the hospital room after everyone had gone. Sky left a message for Stuart. Mike asked for a rewrite on the Erica piece -- Sky had been out of town, and did not realize that Erica and her nanny were front page news. While Erica was with Maria and Edmund, Maria pointed out that Erica called their baby a
"she"... Edmund pushed, but Maria made him drop it. The nurse brought Sonya in to Erica. Erica told Maria that she wanted to put their tensions behind them. Sky arrived at Erica's. The nanny (Esther) opened the door, and Sky questioned her about Dimitri's attack. She asked Esther about her mothering the baby. As Brooke helped Pierce pack, she noticed a gun. Brooke told Pierce that she wanted to go with him. Christina interrupted, and Pierce said he would bring their daughter back if she was alive. Dimitri was at WRCW telling them to remove Adam's name from everything, when Trevor arrived. Maria talked to Erica about Matthew... she could not give up hope that he was still out there. She could not believe he was dead. Sky questioned Esther. Pierce and Trevor prepared to leave... Brooke saw Pierce hug Christina. Erica talked to Esther.
Esther was starting to crack. Esther told Erica that she lied to her about Edmund, and that he really was a good person. Pierce left Brooke with a note to read after he was gone. Adam confronted Dimitri about WRCW. Edmund and Maria were on a plane, and they discussed Erica and Dimitri. Esther told Erica that Maria and Edmund were wonderful, and that they would be good parents.

Hayley & Mateo's Romance  Day Four -  Hayley Decides To Move Out - SoapNet Airdate: 6/15/00 Original ABC Airdate: 6/99
Janet, Brooke and Myrtle arrived for a mysterious meeting that Erica requested. Erica entered, with her mask on. Gillian and Jake were at SOS... Ryan was there, too. Hayley told Mateo that she could not live with him anymore. He tried to convince her that they loved each other, but Hayley insisted that she needed to be alone for awhile. She said that she resented Max and Raquel, and that it was too much to live with. She explained that she almost took a drink. Gillian asked Ryan what was wrong... he replied that he was thinking of some people that were having trouble. Erica apologized to Brooke, Myrtle and Janet for the way she treated them. She told each of them how much they meant to her -- even Brooke. Stuart introduced Becca to Marion. Scott told them that he and Becca were going to do a documentary about why relationships end. Erica told the girls that she was going to have surgery in Brazil. Gillian danced with Jake, but she could not keep her mind off of Ryan. Hayley cried to Mateo -- she poured her heart out and
said that she had to move out, because it was the only way she could survive. Mateo asked Hayley if they could go away for a few days. Hayley said that if they did, her problems would still be waiting for her when she got back. Mateo asked if she was asking him to choose between her and his son. She said no... that she needed to be on her own to get strong and come back to him and help him with Max. She said she needed for Mateo to love her and understand why she needed to do this. Hayley talked to Ryan on the way out. She said he saved her life that night, and that she was going to a meeting (AA meeting). Erica prepared to leave for Brazil. Stuart, Scott and Marion set up for the celebration of the Pediatric Aids Wing (it was the Day of Compassion). Stuart put out a picture of Cindy. Mateo came home to find Hayley asleep on the couch with her bags half packed. He put a blanket over her and sat down in the chair across from her. Erica called Bianca and assured her that her operation would be a total success. She asked Bianca to say a prayer for her. She said that Bianca could come visit her once she was better. Scott showed Gillian the picture of his mom. Stuart, Scott and Marion explained that AIDS was still a prominent disease. Brooke arrived and told them that Erica had left for Brazil. David overheard and booked a flight to Rio. Hayley woke up and saw Mateo asleep on the chair. Mateo woke up and told her that he would move Max and Raquel away if Hayley would stay.

Gillian was shocked when Ryan admitted that they might have given up on each other too soon. An overwhelmed Gillian became angry, but insisted she was happy and stuck to her decision to marry Jake. Becca and Leo rescued Greenlee from a violent Ken, and Leo was injured in the process. Leo covered when he ran into Vanessa at the hospital and she questioned him about the cut on his hand. David tended to Leo's wound and urged him to stay away from Vanessa. Ryan ran into Greenlee and admitted that he was in love with another woman. Jake told Gillian that he didn't want to rush her into getting married, but Gillian insisted to Jake that they get married right away. Hayley was surprised when Mateo presented her with a beautiful diamond ring. Hayley told Mateo that they couldn't put their lives on hold, and Mateo asked her to marry him. Hayley took Mateo back to the club and lovingly accepted his proposal.
