Donny & Marie
On December 10th, 1998, Mary-Kate and Ashley were on the talk show Donny & Marie.
Donny: We’ve got a great show for you.
Marie: We do have a great show. Now, we have watched our first guest on television for their entire lives, now they truely are two of a kind.
Donny: That’s right.
Marie: I think that’s probably why they named their new show that. It’s on ABC. Watch this!

Marie: Will you all please welcome Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen!
Marie: Ok..
Donny: Ok, all right…
Marie: We have to...who...which...who is who?
Donny: Yeah…
Ashley: I’m Ashley.
Mary-Kate: I’m Mary-Kate.
Donny: How can we tell you guys apart?
Marie: I’m usually good at this, but you guys are difficult.
Donny: Identical…
Ashley: Well…I’m wearing pink right now, and Mary-Kate is wearing blue.
Marie: You’re good!
Ashley: I’m taller than she is.
Mary-Kate: She’s right-handed, I’m left-handed.
Marie: Oh, really! Who’s older?
Ashley: I am.
Marie: You’re older.
Ashley: By two minutes.
Marie: Ok, so…Ashley and Mary-Kate. Ok, got it!
Donny: Tell us about Two of a Kind. This is the first season?
Mary-Kate & Ashley: Right.
Marie: Now you (pointing at Mary-Kate) play a tomboy, and you (pointing at Ashley) play….
Ashley: A girly…a girly-girl who loves boys…she’s boy-crazy!
Marie: Are you like that in real life?
Ashley: No, but I am more girly than Mary-Kate is.
Donny: Oh, really.
Marie: Are you a real tomboy?
Mary-Kate: No, I’m not really a tomboy. I just…I don’t know. I play more sports than her. I…I don’t know…I go out riding every single day. Like, I like to go horseback-riding.
Ashley: And I like to…
Mary-Kate: And she likes to dance.
Donny: Oh.
Marie: I like to go horseback-riding, and he likes to dance.
Donny: I do?! Ok…We’ll be right back with more of Mary-Kate and Ashley right after this.
Marie: And Donny dancing!
Donny: And me dancing.
Marie: I know you never ask a lady her age, but how old are you guys?
Mary-Kate and Ashley: 12.
Marie: You’re 12 years old?
Mary-Kate and Ashley: Yes.
Marie: Wow!
Donny: For those of you who just tuned in, we’re back with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. And you guys are the cutest things! Man, you’re just so cute!
Mary-Kate and Ashley: Thank you!
Marie: You know what? I was 12 when I recorded Paper Roses.
Donny: Really?
Marie: That’s so weird. I was your age. Oh, like we have stuff in common!
Donny: But you guys started so much younger than we did. I mean Marie was 3 and I was 5 and...
Marie: You were how old when you started?
Ashley: Nine months old.
Donny: Nine months…
Marie: And that was on Full House?
Ashley: Yes.
Mary-Kate: Yes.
Marie: Now, you played one character, but you...what did they do? How did..
Mary-Kate: We just switched off…
Ashley: We switched scenes, but for about a year they used Mary-Kate, cause every single time I got in front of the camera…
Mary-Kate: She would cry.
Ashley: I would start crying. But when Mary-Kate had a sty in her eye…and…they’d never used me out on camera, they took me out...
Mary-Kate: They brought Ashley out.
Ashley: And I was perfect.
Donny: Now the reason why they probably did that is because you can only be on camera, when you are a baby, for so long.
Marie: Yeah.
Donny: And that’s…that’s why they did it, cause you guys were identical twins, you can just swap them out. Now I’m sitting here thinking…ok you guys are doing all these things together, there’s gotta be something you guys just do apart. I mean you probably...you have to get, you know, kind of…sick and tired of being with each other all the time.
Ashley: Yeah. Well, on the weekends Mary-Kate goes off and…
Mary-Kate: And rides. I horseback-ride.
Ashley: And I dance and…I do jazz, hip-hop and ballet.
Marie: Really?
Donny: And you don’t do the jazz, hip-hop and ballet?
Mary-Kate: No, I swing-dance with her.
Donny: Swing dance…
Mary-Kate: We take classes…
Ashley: Yeah.
Marie: Now, you have a new movie out. Right? That is coming out…what is it called? Billboard Dad?
Mary-Kate and Ashley: Billboard Dad.
Donny: Billboard Dad, here it is.
Marie: And what is Billboard Dad about?
Ashley: It’s about our dad. He’s a widower, and he’s really depressed, so we try to find him a woman, and…then we put a…
Mary-Kate: A billboard up on Sunset…Sunset Strip, and then a whole bunch of girls answer…
Ashley: It’s fun!
Marie: Do you know if it’s out right now?
Mary-Kate and Ashley: Yes!
Marie: You can get it at the stores?
Ashley: Yes.
Mary-Kate: Yeah.
Donny: Ok, we got…we have a clip of it, we’ve got to take a look at this. Watch, right behind you.

Marie: That looks like a great one! Did you enjoy doing it?
Mary-Kate and Ashley: Yeah…
Marie: You have to tell everybody what you did to the audience.
Donny: Yeah.
Ashley: We gave everybody..
Mary-Kate: …everybody a Billboard Dad video.
Marie: Everybody gets one! It’s the season to be giving gifts!
Donny: Yes!
Marie: What do you guys like better? Do you like doing movies or do you like doing television?
Ashley: We like both. We like videos…or television, because we can…you know the schedule…
Mary-Kate: And then we like movies cause you get to like get out and go different places.
Ashley: Instead of being in a studio.
Mary-Kate: And you get to work at night, like in the dark, and it’s really fun!
Donny: With television, it’s like this, it’s very fast. When you do films it takes forever.
Mary-Kate and Ashley: Yeah.
Donny: Does that bother you?
Ashley: Well…when you do scenes over and over and over again, until you get it perfect. But television, it goes really fast.
Donny: Now, you mentioned earlier that you know how to swing-dance. I don’t know if you’d do this for us, but can you show a little of this swing-dance?
Mary-Kate and Ashley: Sure! You guys wanna…?
*Mary-Kate dances with Marie, and Ashley dances with Donny*
