Two years after college graduation
New York City
Dawson Leery trudged into his dark studio apartment, leaning his head against the wall, as the door slammed shut behind him. God, what a day. He kicked off his loafers, walking towards the couch as he loosened his tie. At least it was the weekend. Weekends in New York were his favorite part of living in the city. He shuffled through the afternoon's mail to see if his tickets for the film festival had finally arrived.
A familiar return-address in hastily written shorthand caught his eye. Even after all these years, Pacey's handwriting was instantly recognizable to Dawson. It must have been all that time of high school, watching Pacey absentmindedly scribble notes in class, only to ask Dawson later what the class had even been about. It was a wonder the boy ever graduated, Dawson thought to himself.
He sat down on the couch, turning the envelope over in his hands. After the whole Joey debacle, he and Pacey had made a few attempts to get their friendship back on track. But neither of them could seem to get past the heartache and distrust that had come between them, and, even after Joey and Pacey parted ways, Dawson had resigned himself to Pacey Witter, former best friend, current good acquaintance.
Which is why the letter was such a question. He hadn't heard from Pacey in months, only a brief hello after the two ran into each other the last time that Dawson was in Capeside. Hell, he didn't even think Pacey had his address. Dawson leaned his head back and opened the thin envelope.
A newspaper clipping fluttered to the ground. Pacey had included a short, handwritten note that caught Dawson's attention immediately. It looks like neither one of us will be getting the girl, he had written. Give me a call. We should talk. P.
Dawson picked up the clipping and his breath caught. There was Joey, her brown hair piled on top of her head, a radiant smile on her face that Dawson had rarely seen, her arms around a man whom Dawson had never met. He began to read.
Ms. Bessie Potter of Capeside is pleased to announce the forthcoming marriage of her sister, Josephine, to Mr. Douglas Roberts of Boston. Ms. Potter, a recent graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, is a freelance artist living in Boston?. Dawson's eyes quickly scanned the rest of the article, attempting to absorb the news. Joey, getting married? The wedding will take place June 15th at the Randlett Avenue Methodist Church in Boston.
He and Joey had made a clumsy effort to resume their friendship after her sailing adventure, with Dawson taking pains to dismiss his bruised feelings and be there for his lifelong friend. Their attempts had not been entirely successful, but the two still kept in sporadic contact. Marriage? When did this happen? Who was this guy?
He hesitated for a moment, not sure of what to do. Then, with a purpose in his step, he walked over to pick up the phone, punching in a number he knew by heart. "Doug? Hi, it's Dawson Leery. I was trying to reach Pacey."
