Fran Drescher in The Nanny Special

In an unscheduled program that appeared in Germany, first in 1999 and again in early 2001, this show which lasted approximately 25 minutes, (including commercials), was simply referred to as The Nanny Special. It was made up of interviews with Fran Drescher, Charles Shaughnessy, Daniel Davis and Lauren Lane.

The Interview

FD: It seems, well, the show appears to different people to completely different reasons. I think that´s life. If the show is too pigeon or too linear, it´s not really the real world. Sometimes we tell jokes, which are not right for the ears of children, and other times the character is absurd and immature. For instance, when we hunt each other through the house – then it becomes really mad for the kids. That´s the way life is. So that´s the life we wanted to recreate in the Nanny

FD (re: cast and writers): Well, the cast and the writers are the backbone of the whole show; the one cannot work without the other. But all of them are so great, really. I think the whole acting is so sensational and most of all there is all this attention to detail. Well, you have to have a really talented cast to put such a show together, which then remains attractive over a number of years.

FD (re: what happens in Paris): This is something really special for Mr. Sheffield and Miss Fine. Finally they get closer in Paris somehow.

FD (re: what happens after their marriage): It’s just a never ending challenge – and I don’t want to reveal too much – and a very exciting season, because we invented the show again, or, we’ve focused on the main theme again, so to speak, and at the same time it is like the first season, because now she’s very much a fish out of water, now that the two of them are married.

FD: I think as long as we are a couple that don’t simply fit together – and that is what we are – and as long as we don’t change the character of the nanny, she’ll always be this dubious person you cannot present to others. When she’s married, there’ll always be this threat when an ordinary Cinderella enters the world of the blue-blooded, and, in my opinion, this is exactly what makes the show the way it is – its soul, so to speak.

I would like to express my gratitude towards a very generous soul who took these snaps and passed them on to me so that I could share it with all of you. Thanks Bettina! And a *BIG* thank you to Carmen and Bettina for interpreting this interview for me!
