Amid a sea of unfunny sitcoms ("The Ellen Show"), cheesy reality TV ("Temptation Island") and sheer boredom ("The Education of Max Bickford"), a few quality TV shows floated to the top in 2001.

9. 'Once and Again' (ABC) -- There is no other TV show more earnest and determined to deal with the minutiae of daily life. Sometimes that can be annoying to a viewer expecting a lot of fireworks. But producers Marshall Herskovitz and Ed Zwick prove that even the mundane can be fascinating, that there are no easy answers in life, no matter how badly we want them. __Las Vegas Review-Journal (Jan. 1, 2002)
