When we last left Once and Again (ABC, 9pm), a terrible accident had landed Karen in the hospital. Karen is Rick's ex-wife, the mother of Eli and Jesse (for those of you new to the show or who have problems keeping track). We'd just learned of her struggled with clinical depression and Jesse had worried her Mom might harm herself, but the accident was a cruel fluke that occurred on a day when it seemed like things were improving for Karen.

What's amazing about this show is how real and complicated it can be. Karen's accident affected everyone and will likely continue to affect everyone for a long time. That episode was one of the best episodes of anything this season (I'd rank it right after the Buffy musical and I've watched that ten times).

This series has it all: one of the best ensemble casts on television, great writing, great direction, powerful stories. It's a smart show and it's one that anyone can watch.

Once and Again returns tonight, to yet another new timeslot (Mondays at 9pm). While I'm quite fond of Crossing Jordan (NBC, 9pm), I hope people will give Once and Again a chance (again). It needs viewers if it's gonna survive to see another season.__ www.tvpicks.net (March 4, 2002)
