Background:
Gus grew up in Missouri, the only child of an overbearing, domineering father. Her mother died of smallpox when Gus was only 8, so for most of her life it's only been father and daughter. Mr. Woodridge loves his daughter and while he's never cruel, he has very definite ideas of what's right or wrong for his only child. He will do anything to protect her, to the point of stifling her.
Despite her father's protectiveness, Gus is very much her own woman. She is feisty, independent, and full of plans and dreams. It doesn't help her case any that she is usually the source of much trouble. Never mean spirited, none-the-less, Gus somehow usually ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time. One time in church while lighting candles, she accidently tripped, dropped the candle on a rug and ended up causing a small fire. Things like this just happen when Gus is around.
When she was 14, Gus met a boy close to her age who was passing through town. His name was William F. Cody. Cody and Gus were sweethearts briefly until he continued on his way out West, intent upon pursuing his own dreams. Mr. Woodridge was very much relieved when the cocky, overconfident boy was gone.
Now it's four years later and Gus has left home, on her own for the first time. She's headed for a town called Sweetwater, having heard word that her old friend Cody was there. She's desperate to find him, certain he is her only hope against a future she can't escape.
