Background:

Madeline was born to a middle class family in Curtis Wells, Montana. Her father, William, was a foreman for a mining company and provided a comfortable living for his wife and two children. Castina was a loving mother who spent a great deal of time with Madeline and her brother, Edward.

On Madeline's 12th birthday, her family was coming back from a theater production when they were ambushed by bandits. Edward and Madeline managed to escape, but William and Castina were murdered. Their bodies left ravaged and brutalized on the road to Curtis Wells. With their lives turned upside down, Madeline and Edward, 15, were sent to live with their uncle in Fenton, Nebraska.

Jacob Raines was a terrible, bitter man. William's young brother, Jacob had lived his entire life in William's shadow. A severe gambling problem and a known drunk, Jacob lived in a rundown house on the outskirts of his town. The townsfolk shunned the man for his outlandish and violent behaviors so he kept mostly to himself.

Jacob held no love for Madeline or Edward and resented what they stood for, his brother's perfect heirs. Shortly after their arrival to Fenton, the beatings began. Edward took the brunt of the abuse, often black and blue to the point of not being able to move. Madeline cared from her brother, crying by his side as she attempted to nurse him back to health.

It wasn't long before Edward could take no more. At 17, Edward left, stealing away in the middle of the night, leaving Madeline alone and vulnerable. At first, Jacob seemed to straighten out, putting away the alcohol bottles and providing a fairly stable environment for Madeline.

But it didn't last. Before long, the tirades began again and Madeline found herself battered and bruised for the slightest thing. One evening while serving supper, Mady accidentally turned over a glass, slipping its contents in Jacob's lap. He proceeded to beat her within an inch of her life, breaking her arm, two ribs and closing her left eye completely.

Madeline knew that she too had to get out as her brother had before her. Jacob was becoming worse and worse, his eyes taking notice of her developing curves and Mady feared that the abuse would escalate to more than just beatings. So she waited for her moment, walking on pins and needles in an effort to become almost nonexistent in her uncle's eyes.
