Background:
Ophelia and her older sister Nerissa were abandoned at an orphanage in New York when Ophelia was just a toddler. Nerissa, who was four years older, remembered enough about their family to tell her their parents were too poor to keep them and had to leave them at the orphanage. There is one older brother, Tybalt. Neither of the girls knew where he ended up.
When she was eight, Ophelia joined a large group of orphans to make the journey west, all hoping to find adoptive families. Nerissa was considered too old by this time and stayed behind in New York.
Ophelia was one of the first to be adopted, when the train stopped in St. Louis to join groups from two other orphanages. Her adoptive parents, Jonathan and Elise Patrick, were unable to have children, so Ophelia grew up an only child. When she was twelve, the Patricks moved from their home in St. Louis
to Sweetwater. Jonathan Patrick opened up Sweetwater's only bank, and quickly became successful, due to his reputation as a fair and honest businessman.
