'Friend' in Rehab
Compiled by Julia Brinksneader
•Friends will have to survive awhile without Matthew Perry; the 31-year-old actor is back in drug rehab. "Following the advice of his doctors, Matthew Perry has entered an undisclosed rehabilitation hospital," Perry's publicist, Lisa Kasteler, said in a statement. The crisis comes as the NBC sitcom is producing May sweeps episodes with Perry playing a pivotal role. His character, Chandler Bing, is engaged to Monica Geller, played by Courteney Cox. At the same time, Friends has been in the spotlight because of its rivalry with CBS' top-rated Survivor: The Australian Outback. A life of amazing success and popularity has apparently been difficult for Perry. In May, he was hospitalized with a severe flu. The day he was released from the hospital, he drove his Porsche onto the porch of a house in Hollywood Hills. In 1997, Perry checked into the Hazelden rehab center in Minnesota to treat an addiction to the painkiller Vicodin, the actor later told TV Guide.
