Chapter 25

Laura walked over to the bar and placed her purse down.  She was trying to get up every last ounce of energy and strength she had in her for this confrontation because she knew it wouldn't be an easy one.  She looked over at her son who was standing off to the side a little.

Laura:  Lucky, what are you doing here?

Lucky:  I came to talk to Dad.

Laura:  You should have told me you were leaving at least.

Lucky:  You didn't seem to notice I was gone until now, so what's the big deal?

Laura:  I'm sorry about that.  I had something else on my mind this morning.

Lucky:  What else is new?

Lucky takes off before Laura could get in another word. She turns back and stares at Luke who looks at the floor.  He couldn't look at Laura right now.  He couldn't look into those crisp, blue eyes that just melted his heart with the slightest glance.  He couldn't look at that golden hair that made her look angelic.  Or that soft skin that he loved to touch and press against his body   He snapped back to reality and walked behind the bar, taking out a bottle of beer.

Luke:  What do you want?

Laura:  I think we need to talk.

Luke:  There's nothing to talk about.

Laura:  There's plenty to talk about.  How about starting with your note.

Luke:  It's self explanatory.

Laura:  I don't understand what's going on, Luke.  One minute you end up in our bed and the next minute you can't even be in the same house with me?  It doesn't make sense.

Luke:  None of this makes sense.  You keeping Nikolas a secret from me for practically our whole marriage.  Then keeping his paternity from me.  You running from a Cassadine blackmailer instead of coming straight to me for help.  None of that makes sense.

Laura:  How many times do I have to explain why I kept Nikolas a secret?

Luke:  Why his paternity, Laura?  That's what I really need to know.

Laura just looked down at her hands, trying to think of an explanation.  Tears started to form in her eyes as she realized that there was no excuse for keeping that a secret.

Luke:  Just what I thought.  You can't come up with one.

Laura:  What did you want me to do, Luke?  Intentionally hurt everyone that I love?  That's what happened, hasn't it?  The truth came out and now everyone is hurting.

Luke:  I'll admit, whoever came up with the phrase, "ignorance is bliss", sure as hell knew what they were talking about.

Laura:  Luke, please  (Luke flinches away as Laura tries to place her hands on his shoulders)  What's going on?  You act as if you don't love me anymore.

Luke:  (looking at Laura with pain in his eyes)  You couldn't be more wrong in your life.

Laura:  Then why do you back away from me?  Why do you flinch at my touch?

Luke:  Because I do love you!  (taking a deep breath, trying to regain some control over himself)  You betrayed me, Laura.  Maybe not in the sense as many people would think.  You didn't cheat on me, but you did betray me.  I can't just let that go.  You didn't trust me enough to be able to stand by you.  You didn't trust our love enough to handle this obstacle.  That hurts me more than anything else could.

Laura:  You're acting like this is the final straw.  You're acting like this is the one obstacle that our love can't overcome.

Luke:  I'm hurt, Laura.  Can't you understand that?  And I'm confused.  Everything that I was so sure of, everything I would have staked my life on, has just disappeared.  I would have bet my life on the fact that you would never betray me.  But you did.  I may not have lost my life with that bet, but I did lose my heart.  (Laura goes to touch him again and he backs away)  Don't.  Don't touch me.

Laura:  Luke, last night you acted as if we were getting passed this.  Am I supposed to forget what happened last night?

Luke:  No.  I know what happened.  We made love.  I remember it clearly.  That's why I don't want you to touch me right now.  (Luke regretted those words as soon as they left his mouth)  Laura, look at me.  (she looks up at him, tears streaming down her eyes)  I do love you, but love's not enough.  Every time I look at you, smell you, touch you... whatever... I want to just grab you and make love to you.  You once told me that making love did not solve our problems.  Now I finally realize how right you were.  Love's not enough.  If it were, we would always be the two happiest people in the world.  But it's not.  Along with the love, there also must be trust, and I've lost that now.

Laura:  You lost all trust in me?

Luke:  No.  I do trust you with my life.  I always will.  I just...

Laura:  What?

Luke:  I just don't trust you with my heart.  You broke it Laura and it's going to take time to put it back together.

Laura:  So in the meantime you want me out of your life?

Luke:  I don't know what I want.

Laura:  I see.  (she tried holding back all her tears, but it was impossible.  She ran out of the club before she had a complete breakdown)

Luke watched Laura run out and he threw the bottle of beer across the room.  He was completely losing control.  His life was spinning in all different directions and he couldn't keep up.  He had no idea what he was going to do now.  As he sees Laura's face before she just left enter his mind, he realizes that his greatest fear may come true.   He and Laura may lose everything.

Lucky starts walking through the park, kicking stones out of his way.  He was happy that his mother went to go talk to his father, but he didn't think that she could say anything to change the situation right now.  He knew that he was still hurt by her secrets, so he could only imagine what his father was going through.  But no matter what happened, he wanted his parents to get passed this and be together.

Lucky took a seat at the bench, grabbed a few pebbles, and started tossing them in the fountain.  He found the stillness in the air actually comforting for once.  He usually wanted to be where ever the action was, but he started to appreciate peace and quiet since his family started falling apart.    He got up off the bench walked over to the fountain and pulled a penny out of his pocket.   As a single tear fell down his face, he wished his parents would be happy again, and threw the penny into the fountain.

Sean was playing with Anna while Tiffany was on the phone.

Tiff:  Hi, is Laura around?

Lesley:  Not at the moment.

Tiff:  Do you know where she went or what time she'll be back.  It's her friend, Tiffany.

Lesley:  All I know is that she went over to the club to find Luke.

Tiff:  Thanks Lesley.  Bye.

Tiffany hangs up the phone and sits next to Sean and Anna.

Sean:  What's wrong?

Tiff:  Nothing Sean.  Laura's not home right now.

Sean:  Anna, can you play upstairs for a minute?  I'll be right up after I talk to Mom.

Anna:  Sure Daddy.

Anna runs upstairs and Sean moves closer to Tiffany.

Sean:  Something is on your mind.

Tiff:  I don't know why I have this feeling that Luke and Laura are having some major problems.

Sean:  Well, I did tell you what I saw in the park that day.  They really did look like they were going to tear each other apart.

Tiff:  I think we should help them.

Sean:  Oh, no.  Not in your life.  This is something that they can handle by themselves and I bet they would prefer that too.

Tiff:  But we're their friends, Sean.

Sean:  And this is none of our business.  If they wanted our help, they would ask for it.

Tiff:  Friends shouldn't have to ask for help.

Tiffany grabs her purse and keys and opens the door to leave.

Sean:  Tiffany, where are you going?

Tiff:  To find them.

Tiffany leaves and Sean knocks down the checker board that he and Anna were playing just moments before.  Why did Tiffany have to get involved in everything?  He went upstairs and got Anna.  He dropped her off at Felicia's house and went to find his wife to see what she was getting herself into now.
