1979 History-Friendship & Obsession
THE BEGINNING
What would have happened if Bobbie had never called her brother for help?
BOBBIE: THERE'S SOME GIRL I KNOW WHO HAS REALLY DONE ME DIRT AND IF ANYBODY CAN HELP ME EVEN THE SCORE, IT'S YOU. SO, WHAT DO YOU SAY, WILL YOU HELP ME MAKE HER SORRY SHE EVER CROSSED A SPENCER?
The world didn't have a clue that the greatest love story of all time was about to happen. Most important in the beginning of L&L was FRIENDSHIP and UNDERSTANDING. Laura was bored at home while Scotty worked long hours. She also wanted her independence and she got a job working at the Campus Disco run by Luke Spencer. Luke had fallen in love with Laura at first sight when he was introduced to her at PCU. Luke became OBSESSED with Laura, often looking at the pictures in his desk that he took of her, smelling the hankerchief she dropped at her wedding to Scotty. Luke often fantasized about Laura...he could see himself dancing with her, kissing her, saying Wedding vows to her....it is no wonder that fans wanted L&L together from the beginning. Those fantasies were just a DELICIOUS TASTE OF WHAT WE HAD TO HAVE MORE OF!!!!
LUKE'S COMPASSION FOR LAURA
LUKE: ARE YOU OK?
LAURA: YEAH, I'M FINE.
LUKE: YOU KNOW, EVERYBODY KEEPS TALKING ABOUT AMY'S FATHER DYING, THEY FORGET
HE WAS YOUR FATHER TOO... FOR 12 YEARS WASN'T HE? (Laura breaks down crying
and they talk of her childhood))
(Laura tells Luke she was jealous of Lesley comforting Amy )
LUKE: IM' SURE MOST PEOPLE FEEL THAT WAY AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER. YOU KNOW,
YOU FEEL LOST BECAUSE YOU THINK MAYBE YOU'LL NEVER HAVE THAT ONE PERSON THAT
YOU THINK IS GOING TO MAKE YOUR LIFE PERFECT.
LAURA: YOU REALLY DO UNDERSTAND.
LUKE: YEAH, BUT WHAT I DON'T UNDERSTAND IS HOW YOU COULD FEEL THAT WAY. YOU
HAVE SCOTTY.
LAURA: YES, SCOTTY IS VERY SPECIAL.
LUKE: SO?
LAURA: I DON'T KNOW. SOMETIMES I DON'T FEEL UP TO HIM, YA KNOW? I DON'T THINK
I AM A VERY GOOD WIFE. I THINK I'M IMMATURE.(crying)
LUKE: OH, NOW YOU HAVE GONE FROM SELF PITY TO SELF DEPRECATING. YOU ARE BEING
TOO HARD ON YOURSELF. LAURA, SCOTTY IS THE LUCKIEST GUY IN THE WORLD. I'M
SURE YOU ARE A WONDERFUL WIFE.
LUKE AND LAURA TALKING ABOUT LOVE
LAURA: I DON'T THINK THAT MOST PEOPLE REALLY KNOW WHAT LOVE IS.
LUKE; THAT'S POSSIBLE.
LAURA; BECAUSE IT'S CERTAINLY NOT JUST BEING TOGETHER. I THINK THAT'S WHAT
MOST PEOPLE THINK.
LUKE: YEAH.
LAURA: IT TAKES AN AWFUL LOT MORE THAN THAT TO SPEND A LIFETIME TOGETHER.
LUKE: YEAH, IT DOES. BUT LIKE WHAT? WHAT DO YOU MEAN?
LAURA: OH, JUST BEING CLOSE IN EVERY WAY
(Luke trying to make a point with Laura, to make her SEE)
LUKE: YOU MEAN ENJOYING THE SAME THINGS?
LAURA; YEAH, THAT WOULD HELP.
LUKE: HURTING WHEN ANOTHER PERSON HURTS?
LAURA: YEAH.
LUKE: YEAH, IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE FOR 2 PEOPLE TO FEEL THAT WAY ABOUT EACH
OTHER WHEN THEY AREN'T ACTUALLY IN LOVE.
Laura ends up telling Luke that he is one of the best friends she has ever had and that he is very important to her.
LUKE REVEALS HIS FEELINGS TO LAURA
Luke began to realize the danger that Laura could be in working at the disco.
He tried to keep the place clean, but it was becomming impossible with different
members of the organization frequenting the disco. Luke decided to fire Laura
for her protection and ended up telling her how he felt about her.
LUKE: LOOK, WILL YOU LISTEN TO ME?
LAURA: LUKE, NO! I NEED THIS JOB. I NEED THE MONEY. AND BESIDES THAT, I LIKE
BEING HERE. I LIKE THE MUSIC, I LIKE THE EXCITEMEWNT, AND UP UNTIL NOW, I
REALLY LIKED THE IDEA OF GETTING TO KNOW YOU BETTER. NOW I'M NOT SO SURE.
LUKE: LAURA, PLEASE, PLEASE TRY TO UNDERSTAND.
LAURA: THERE IS NOTHING TO UNDERSTAND. YOU WANT TO FIRE ME? GO AHEAD AND
SAY IT' LAURA YOU'RE FIRED' AND I'LL WALK OUT OF HERE RIGHT NOW!
LUKE: LAURA, THIS ISN'T WHAT I WANT TO DO.
LAURA(Almost shouting) THEN WHY ARE YOU DOING IT!
LUKE: BECAUSE I CARE ABOUT YOU! BECAUSE YOU ARE SPECIAL TO ME! BECAUSE I
CAN'T LOOK AT ANOTHER WOMAN! BECAUSE I THINK OF YOU ALL THE TIME. I WORRY
ABOUT YOU. LAURA, I DON'T WANT ANYONE TO HURT YOU. AND ESPECIALLY NOT ME!
Laura knew how Luke felt about her, but she still went back to Luke's office.
LAURA: IF I MADE YOU THINK I WAS INTERESTED IN YOU, I'M SORRY
LUKE: LAURA, YOU HAVEN'T DONE THAT. I WAS ONLY TRYING TO SAY THAT YOU ARE,
UM, SPECIAL TO ME.
Laura decides to continue working at the disco
LAURA: WELL, IF I DECIDE TO STAY ON, I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT I LOVE SCOTTY
VERY MUCH.
LUKE: I REALIZE THAT. I'LL NEVER MENTION IT AGAIN. I JUST GOT CARRIED AWAY.
LAURA: OKAY, ALRIGHT I GUESS.
LUKE: CAN WE STILL BE FRIENDS?
LAURA: OF COURSE WE CAN BE FRIENDS. JUST AS LONG AS YOU KNOW I TAKE MY MARRIAGE
VOWS SERIOUSLY.
LUKE: I KNOW YOU DO. THAT'S WHAT MAKES YOU SO SPECIAL.
LAURA'S ATTRACTION TO LUKE
Luke and Laura would often study together and Luke recited a passage of Shakespeares Sonnets from memory to Laura. He stared deep into her eyes.
LUKE: BEING YOUR SLAVE, WHAT SHOULD I DO? PRETEND UPON THE HOURS AND TIMES OF YOUR DESIRE. I HAVE NO PRECIOUS TIME TO SPEND. NO SERVICES TO DO TIL YOU REQUIRE.
LAURA'S POSSESSIVENESS AND JEALOUSY OVER LUKE
Laura's friends noticed that she was spending all of her time with Luke and they warned her. They also noticed that Luke had his eye on Laura. It didn't help Laura much that her sister wanted to date Luke and her friends found him so attractive.
LAURA:(Referring to Luke) DID YOU EVER LOOK INTO SOMEONES EYES AND KNOW EXACTLY
WHAT THEY WERE THINKING?
CLAUDIA: SURE, ALL THE TIME. ESPECIALLY THAT SISTER OF YOURS! (Claudia rambles
on about how Amy is jealous of Laura)
CLAUDIA: SHE'D PROBABLY TAKE YOUR MAN IF SHE THOUGHT SHE COULD GET HER HANDS
ON HIM.
LAURA: MY MAN?(Laura clearly thinking of Luke until she realizes that Claudia
is talking about Scotty...lol)
CLAUDIA: EXCEPT SCOTTY WOULDN'T EVEN LOOK AT ANOTHER WOMAN.
LAURA: SCOTTY?(Laura looks puzzled like, oh, yeah, my husband scotty...lol)
Interesting that Laura thought of Luke as HER MAN and refused to take the advice of friends that she was getting too involved with Luke. The truth is that Laura enjoyed being wanted by Luke, someone she found to be worldly, intelligent, attractive, and a man who could have any woman he wanted but wanted her. Luke also valued Laura's opinion. He treated her like a woman and not a child. Laura wanted to be treated like an adult and she wanted her thoughts to be taken seriously. Luke took Laura seriously. Many times Laura could tell when Luke was thinking about HER. She would try to get it out of him because she SAW IT IN HIS EYES. Even when Luke wouldn't admit his longing for Laura, she still KNEW.
AMY: I THINK HE'S KIND OF NEAT.
CLAUDIA: YEAH, WELL, YOU AND HALF THE OTHER GIRLS IN PC. I MEAN, WHY DO YOU
THINK SO MANY SINGLE GIRLS HANG OUT AT THE DISCO?
AMY: YOU KNOW, IT'S FUNNY. HE'S NOT EXACTLY HANDSOME, BUT I FIND HIM VERY
ATTRACTIVE. DON'T YOU LAURA?
LAURA: (Unconvincingly)I NEVER REALLY NOTICED BEFORE.
AMY: REALLY? I NOTICED THE FIRST TIME I MET HIM. IT'S MORE THAN LOOKS. THERE
IS SOMETHING ABOUT THE INNER MAN.
CLAUDIA: THAT'S HEAVY AMY.
AMY: YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.
CLAUDIA: YEAH, I KNOW!
Laura went bonkers asking why they were talking about him and warned Amy that Luke was too old for her and was not from her world, and that he could have any woman he wanted...not a child like Amy. Laura didn't like it when Amy flirted with Luke. She was jealous. No doubt about it, Laura was in love with Luke and couldn't admit it, maybe didn't even realize how deep her feelings ran for Luke. We already knew how Luke felt about Laura, he thought she was the most special person on the planet with a purity that she was born with...yes, he DID say purity...LOL! Luke was everything Laura wanted in a man and he could cheer her up and make her laugh. No one made her laugh the way Luke did and no one understood her the way Luke did and was able to comfort her the way Luke did. Laura listened to Luke, encouraged him, and helped him realize that he could come from nothing and make something of himself. Two lonely people who didn't fit anywhere....but they fit with each other.
