LAURA/JENNIFER/LUKE-The OTHER Triangle
LUKE AND JENNIFER
LUKE: JENNIFER. A VERY PRETTY NAME FOR A VERY PRETTY LADY.
Jennifer was introduced to Luke at a New Years Eve Party(Ball?). Jennifer's
eyes immediately lit up when she saw Luke. Laura and her jealous self was
taking note of the way Jennifer was looking at Luke. Luke started dating
Jennifer and I loved the scene of Luke taking Jennifer home, and Jennifer
wanting Luke to kiss her in the car.
JENNIFER: LUKE, MY FATHER IS NOT STANDING BEHIND THE DOOR WITH A SHOT GUN
WAITING FOR THE MAN WHO BRINGS ME HOME FROM A DATE.....AND WANTS TO KISS
ME?
LUKE: OKAY, JENNIFER. (looking less than thrilled, he gives her a brief kiss)
JENNIFER: THAT'S NOT WHAT I HAD IN MIND. I THINK I'LL HAVE TO TEACH YOU WHAT
THE HARVARD BOYS TAUGHT ME.( To Luke's surprise, Jennifer takes over and
starts passionately kissing him...LOL)
RUBY: THAT'S ONE PRETTY LITTLE THING AND A CLASS ACT.
LUKE: WELL, SHE LIKES YOU TOO, WHICH IS A BIG POINT IN HER FAVOR, BUT SHE
DOESN'T DO ANYTHING FOR ME. YOU KNOW, I JUST KEEP COMPARING HER TO LAURA,
AND WHEN I DO THAT, SHE COMES UP CHOPPED MEAT. EVERY ROAD I TAKE, IT DOESN'T
MATTER WHERE I GO, IT LEADS ME RIGHT BACK TO LAURA.
While Luke and Jennifer started dating, and Laura had quit her job at the
disco. She was moving on with her life and she said she wanted Luke to move
on with his....so she said.
LAURA: WELL, LUKE, YOU'RE GETTING INVOLVED WITH JENNIFER SMITH AND I THINK
THAT'S WONDERFUL. I MEAN, WE ALL NEED SOMEBODY, AND SHE IS VERY INTERESTED
IN YOU, I CAN TELL, SO I THINK YOU ARE OFF TO A TERRIFIC START!
LUKE: (Sad) SURE, SURE. THE PROBLEM IS, IT WILL ALWAYS BE YOU FOR ME. YOU
KNOW THAT, DON'T YOU?(Laura nods yes)
LUKE AND LAURA KISS
Who could have prepared us for what was to follow? We had no idea that Laura would completely wig out about not being around Luke anymore...but that is exactly what she did. It was Laura's last night at the disco, and she had already had a talk where Luke tells her he will miss her but she belongs with her husband. Laura works her last night and she is edgy and uncomfortable. She watches Luke being the life of the party, friendly and supportive of the new waitress who is taking her place. She can't stand watching how understanding and kind he is to the new girl. Matters get worse when Scotty shows up with some friends and is watching her every move. The thing that really breaks Laura is when Jennifer shows up at the disco and starts dancing with Luke. Laura looks at them and then looks at her husband(she wonders if he can see the truth) and she rushes off the dance floor in tears. Luke sees her go and of course he goes after her. Luke finds Laura in his office crying.
LUKE: WHAT'S WRONG?
LAURA: I DON'T KNOW, LUKE. EVERYTHING STARTED CLOSING IN ON ME ALL AT ONCE....AND
I DON'T KNOW.
LUKE: I UNDERSTAND.
LAURA: WHAT DO YOU MEAN?
LUKE: THERE IS SO MUCH UNFINISHED BUSINESS BETWEEN US LAURA (Luke moves closer
to Laura and puts his hand on her face)....STILL.
Luke and Laura start kissing, Laura puts her arms around Luke and passionately
kisses him before pulling away and slapping his head off...
LAURA: NO!! NO, DON'T DO THAT. I'M GOING HOME TO MY HUSBAND AND I NEVER WANT
TO SEE YOU AGAIN!
Laura left Luke shaken. He had kissed her, and unbelievably to him, she had
DEFINITELY kissed him back. Luke was still shaking when Bobbie found him.
Luke told Bobbie he had messed up, that he had kissed Laura(but as he said
it, he looked confused, knowing she returned that kiss). Luke told Bobbie
that Laura nearly knocked his head off she slapped him so hard.
BOBBIE: STRANGE DON'T YOU THINK? THAT SHE WOULD GET THAT ANGRY AT SOMEBODY
SHE CLAIMED NOT TO CARE A BIT ABOUT?
LUKE: WHAT ARE YOU SAYING?
BOBBIE: WHAT I'M SAYING BROTHER DEAR, IS WHEN THERE'S THAT MUCH ANGER, THERE'S
GOT TO BE ANOTHER EMOTION TOO. AND IT SURE ISN'T FEAR.
Later, Laura got herself locked in the closet in Luke's office and heard a conversation between Luke/Frank Smith. She was worried about Luke and Luke didn't want her to care about him.
LUKE:(Laura turns Luke to face her and he looks as though he is drowning
in her eyes) NO, NO LAURA. DON'T LOOK AT ME LIKE THAT.
LAURA: LUKE, I CAN'T LEAVE YOU LIKE THIS.
LUKE: LAURA, DON'T DO THIS TO ME. YOU DIDN'T HEAR ANYTHING, YOU DIDN'T HEAR
ANYTHING. DON'T WORRY ABOUT ME, DON'T CARE ABOUT ME BECAUSE IF YOU
DO....I'LL......(pleading)LAURA, DON'T CARE ABOUT ME.
Laura tells Luke that after they kissed, she realized that there was a bond
between them, a bond that could never be broken. She reasons it is because
she saved Luke's life when she threw his keys over the cliff, but Luke tells
her that it is MORE THAN THAT. Before Laura leaves, she tells Luke that she
loves her husband and tells him a FINAL goodbye(yeah, right....LOL). It was
very poignant the way Laura got ready to leave, but then turned around to
kiss Luke on the cheek. I loved that scene, and oh boy the pain on Luke's
face. Whew!
Laura wouldn't be going ANYWHERE because Frank Smith found out she was hiding in the closet and he told Luke she HAD to continue working at the disco. Silly little naive Laura called the FBI to tell them about what she had heard. She didn't go through with it, but Frank Smith knew she made the call. Can Laura say CLICK BOOM...LOL???? Frank put a HIT out on her life. So, we had Luke frantic to figure out a way to save her life, telling her he would die before he would let anyone harm her.
Jennifer had fallen in love with Luke and Luke agreed to marry Jennifer if Laura was protected. Laura didn't take it well that Luke was engaged to Jennifer. She always spouted off about not wanting him to marry a girl to protect her, but it went deeper than that. This is the girl who CRIED TEARS at Luke and Jennifer's engagement party....LOL!
LUKE REALIZES LAURA DOESN'T WANT HIM TO MARRY JENNIFER
LAURA: I JUST CAN'T STAND TO SEE THE TWO OF YOU TOGETHER.
LUKE: WAIT A MINUTE. AM I DREAMING HERE? I DON'T WANT TO MOVE TOO FAST. HOLD
IT. WHAT....WHAT DID YOU SAY?
LAURA: I DON'T KNOW. I THINK I PROBABLY JUST FEEL THAT WAY OUT OF GUILT.
I JUST CAN'T STAND THE THOUGHT OF YOU MARRYING ANOTHER GIRL TO PROTECT ME.
THAT'S WRONG, LUKE.
LUKE: I'D RATHER BELIEVE THAT IT BOTHERS YOU BECAUSE YOU CARE ABOUT ME THE
WAY A WOMAN CARES ABOUT A MAN.
LAURA: NO, LUKE. THAT'S NOT....
LUKE:.... THAT YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE ME MARRY SOMEBODY BECAUSE YOU WANT ME
FOR YOURSELF. IS THAT POSSIBLE?
LAURA: NO, NO I JUST HATE THE THOUGHT OF YOUR MARRYING JENNIFER THAT'S ALL.
I JUST CAN'T STAND TO SEE THE TWO OF YOU TOGETHER(Laura rushes off)
Luke knew that Laura had feelings for him, but there was nothing he could
do about Jennifer, especially since Laura refused to admit her attraction
to him. In this next scene, Laura is jealous of Jennifer and Luke lets Laura
know how he feels about her AGAIN.
LAURA: SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE THE WEDDING OF THE SUMMER.
LUKE: YOURS HAD LAST YEARS COVERED.
LAURA: MINE WAS ONLY IN THE PARK.
LUKE: THAT'S WHAT JENNIFER WANTS.
LAURA:(jealous) AND WHAT JENNIFER WANTS, JENNIFER GETS DOESN'T SHE?
LUKE: DON'T LOOK AT ME LIKE THAT.
LAURA: I'M SORRY. I JUST CAN'T BELIEVE YOU'RE GOING THROUGH WITH THIS.
LUKE:(turns Laura to face him)LAURA, LAURA.
LAURA: I HOPE THAT YOU ARE GOING TO BE VERY HAPPY, LUKE.
LUKE: DON'T DO THIS. PLEASE, PLEASE DON'T DO THIS TO ME. YOU KNOW THAT I
THINK ABOUT YOU EVERY DAY. EVEN WHEN I'M WITH JENNIFER I THINK ABOUT YOU.
I DON"T WANT TO BE MARRIED TO ANYONE......ANYONE BUT YOU.
(This is where we get one of those near kisses that L&L are famous for...LOL)
Luke was tired of Laura playing her games with him. Either she wanted him or she didn't. Luke got fed up and lashed out at her in this fight scene.
LUKE AND LAURA DISCUSS JENNIFER
LUKE: I WOULD LIKE YOU TO UNDERSTAND WHY I AM MARRYING JENNIFER.
LAURA: I UNDERST....
LUKE: (rising from his chair in the office) SHUT UP AND LISTEN!!! I AM NOT
MARRYING HER OUT OF PITY, I'M NOT MARRYING HER FOR HER MONEY, AND I AM NOT
MARRYING HER OUT OF SOME UNAPPRECIATED NOBLE ATTEMPT TO PROTECT YOU MRS.
BALDWIN. I AM MARRYING HER(Luke pauses) OUT OF LOVE.
LAURA: WHAT?
LUKE: I DIDN'T SAY BECAUSE I WAS IN LOVE, I SAID OUT OF LOVE.
LAURA: I DON'T UNDERSTAND.
LUKE: LOOK, I DON'T EXPECT YOU TO UNDERSTAND BECAUSE YOU HAVE NEVER UNDERSTOOD
ME, BUT I'LL TELL YOU THIS, JENNIFER IS SOMEONE THAT I CAN LEARN TO LOVE
AND I WILL LEARN TO LOVE BECAUSE SHE CAN GIVE. AND THAT'S SOMETHING YOU CAN'T
UNDERSTAND. ALL YOU KNOW HOW TO DO IS TEASE A MAN, LAURA. YOU NEVER, EVER
DELIVER!
LAURA:(Laura tries to walk out) GOODBYE LUKE.
LUKE: I'M NOT THROUGH!
LAURA: OH, WELL, THEN PLEASE FINISH.
LUKE: JENNIFER ISN'T LIKE YOU. SHE'S OPEN, SHE'S DIRECT. WHEN SHE WANTS A
MAN, SHE LETS HIM KNOW IT. MOST OF ALL, SHE'S HONEST. LAURA, JENNIFER IS
HONEST AND THAT'S THE KIND OF WOMAN I NEED YOU SEE. I DON'T NEED A LITTLE
SCHOOL GIRL WHO REFUSES TO GROW UP SO WHY DON'T YOU JUST RUN ALONG HOME TO
SCOTTY......BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT YOU WANT. LAURA: YES, THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT
I WANT AND I'LL NEVER COME BACK HERE, LUKE. THAT'S WHAT YOU WANT ISN'T IT?
Yeah, yeah right. Like anybody thought Laura was actually going to stay away
from Luke...LOL! Luke continued to love Laura and even Jennifer walked up
and heard this next dialogue.
LUKE: I FALL MORE IN LOVE WITH YOU EVERYDAY.
LAURA: LUKE, DON'T SAY THAT.
LUKE: I HAVE TO SAY IT. MY GOD LET ME SAY IT! I NEED TO SEE YOU. I WON'T
TOUCH YOU, BUT I DO NEED TO SEE YOU. I LOVE YOU, LAURA.
After this conversation, Jennifer questions Luke about it and Luke tells her that what he had with Laura was over. I don't think Jennifer really bought this though because she wanted to watch them around each other. This led to Jennifer inviting Luke and Laura to go sailing with her so she could see if they were really over each other or not. And, we all know what ended up happening with L&L in the infamous sailboat scenes...LOL! Too bad for poor Jennifer though, she never did get to marry the man of her dreams...
But Luke would someday marry the woman of his dreams...
