Pick Up Sticks
Chapter Three:

"Antoinette," Kevin asked, "no last name?"

"Chandler -- Antoinette Chandler," Antoinette got to her feet.

"What was that about?" Kevin probed, mentioning the scene with Adam.

"I got a little upset with my father," Antoinette explained.

"God help anyone who gets you upset," Kevin smirked.

"That's right, because if he doesn't, I'd watch out," Antoinette walked over to the bed her suitcase was sitting and started to unpack.

"I'd better get back, they'll think I've chickened out," Kevin walked backwards to the door, holding something behind his back, "see ya later."

"Bye," Antoinette continued to unpack.

"Hi," Kevin walked up to Antoinette in the courtyard, "this your lunch?"

"Yeah," Antoinette looked up

"Were sposta be having a dance. Are you coming?" Kevin looked away towards a couple of boys behind him.

"I guess, I don't really know anyone though," she thumbed through her book.

"You know me, -- I'll stick by your side," Kevin coughed.

"He sure will," a couple of boys around Kevin's age laughed.

"Guys," Kevin gave them a sharp look.

"My name's Will," one boy said, "Will Cortland."

"I'm --" Antoinette started.

"That's all right," Will interrupted, "I already know who you are. Kevin can't stop talking about you."

"Stop it, Will," Kevin nudged him.

"Antoinette this, Antoinette that," Will chuckled.

"Shut up!" Kevin pushed him to the ground.

"Ow," Will expressed in pain.

Antoinette looked back and forth between the two boys, while she got up, book in hand, "I'll go with you," she came near him, "thanks for wanting to be my friend," she smiled kissing his cheek, "bye," she waved slightly.

Kevin was stunned and the other boys went "ooooohhhh," in unison.

"Shut up -- or I'll push all of you," Kevin threatened. The boys fell silent.

right before the dance:
"So, who are you going with?" asked Dawn, Antoinette's roommate.

"Kevin Buchanan," Antoinette said in reply.

"Oh, he's adorable. Don't you think so Toni?" Dawn nosed.

"He's all right, I guess. What about you?" Antoinette sat on her bed tiredly.

"I'm going with Will Cortland, he gave me a ring," Dawn beamed showing Antoinette her ring.

"It's lovely," Antoinette commented, "how long is this dance anyway?"

"Not sure, we have our own dance, the elementary grade kids, it should last until seven-thirty, maybe eight. The older kid's dance should last later," Dawn dug around in her closet, "ugh, I'm going to go see if Anna has a dress I can borrow," she left shutting the door behind her.

"Good grief, I thought she'd never leave," Kevin sighed, climbing though the window, scaring Antoinette half to death.

"Jeez, don't ever scare me like that again," Antoinette warned, "what do you think you're doing?"

"I had an idea, come on," Kevin grabbed hold of her hand and they escaped through the window.

"What do you think of this --" Dawn entered the room and looked up, holding a dress, "Toni? -- Antoinette?" she looked around the room, "hmm, I wonder where she is."
