Pick Up Sticks
Chapter Six:
"What are you doing?" Skye squinted, her eyes adjusting to the dark of the room and then readjusting after Dawn turned her lamp on, "Ahh," Skye put her hand up to her face covering her eyes.
"What?" Dawn asked annoyed
"The light, it's right in my eyes."
"Sorry," Dawn apologized, moved the direction of the light out of Skye's eyes and sat beside Skye on her bed.
"It's three in the morning. What are you doing?"
"Look, Toni -- " Dawn's sentence interrupted by Skye's look of disgust, "okay, okay, Skye. No, no... sorry, can't do that, I'm calling you Toni and that's that," Dawn got up and gathered clothes from her dresser, "It's better than your full name, isn't it... well?"
"I guess. Why are you packing?"
"My father died and I'm going to look for my mother."
"But I -- "
"Yeah, I know, I'm not completely sure about who I'm looking for or where but I'm gonna find out . You gotta promise, Toni, you can't tell anyone... not even Kevin. You have to swear, pinkie swear, that's the most sacred promise friends can make to one another," Dawn looked at her almost pleadingly.
"It's whom," Skye sat up and looked right back at her, "and what are you talking about, Kevin?"
"Pinkie swear," Dawn held her pinkie out.
"Fine... okay, I won't tell anyone," they sealed the promise, "You're gonna be okay, right?" Skye questioned, not really expecting an answer.
"You know you're gonna marry him," Dawn smiled at her.
"Are not," Skye looked shocked by Dawn's remark.
"I'll write, at least I'll try," Dawn hugged Skye, "Don't take any crap from anyone. Fight back, I'm not going to some stupid orphanage or a home for wayward kids. Don't take anything from anyone... stand by yourself and you'll be fine, even without me. You never did need me. I'm the one who needed you."
"You're wrong," Skye's voice strained a whisper as Dawn climbed out the window into the night, "I needed you too." Dawn never wrote.
