jeu d’esprit
chapter seven:

Skye kissed Jax with all the emotions she had bottled up inside herself, the ones that drew her to him, the ones that wanted to show her father that he couldn't tell her what to do, the ones that didn't want to be responsible anymore, the ones that wanted to do something that would make her feel good not to please anyone else and this certainly did please her. Jax and Skye fell to the bed as the passion they felt for one another grew as did their anticipation.

"Skye?" Rae entered her room as Jax and Skye flew apart from one another, "Would you mind getting off my daughter's bed?"

"No problem," Jax stood up and walked to the door, "I guess I'll see you when I see you. Ms. Cummings."

"Bye," Skye said as he left, wiping her lips "Mom, what are you doing in my room," her gaze glued to her bed trying to avoid Rae's glare.

"Oh, that is low, that is low."

"What?"

"That's the first time you've ever called me Mom and you know it. What the hell was going on in here?" Rae tried to hide her smile.

"Jax just came over, he was worried 'cause I wasn't at school."

"Yeah? Well, it looked like a lot more than that"

"It did?" Skye looked up at Rae meeting her eyes.

"You like him, huh?"

"Yeah -- more than I've ever liked anyone."

"We need to talk about that"

"What? Ohhh, no, no I already know all about the birds and the bees," Skye uneasily put the loose hair behind her ear.

"Oh yeah?"

"Look, Rae, not that this is any of your business but I'm still a virgin and I don't intend on losing that, okay? Jax and I are just friends. You and dad certainly are trying to make sure of that by sending me to that all girls school aren't you?"

"Maybe that wasn't the best of ideas but having Jax in your room, on your bed, kissing him? That wasn't the smartest thing you could do either."

"I am so not talking about this with you."

"Would you rather talk about it with your father? AJ has been silenced temporarily but I wouldn't count on that forever."

"You can't tell him, he'll send me to Switzerland I know it. Jax is the only friend I have. Why are you all doing this to me? Why take me away from everyone I've ever cared about?"

"We don't want you to get hurt."

"How many ways can someone hurt? 'Cause I've already hurt all the ways I know how. Thanks to you and my father and my grandfather."

"Skye?" Alan asked as he entered her room followed by Adam.

"Daddy?" Skye said trying to contain her joy at Adam's presence but also worried at what it meant.

"Sweetheart," Adam embraced her, making Rae throw a questioning look at Alan who nodded that it was okay.

"Daddy -- you're -- you're scarring me," Skye looked up at him after he let her go, "I thought -- "

"I know, sweetheart," Adam interrupted, "I know. It's just that something happened."

"What?" Skye's face full of worry.

"It's your mother -- honey, Althea died."

"Oh," Skye looked up at them, "okay, uh, can I be alone please?" not exactly sure how she should react.

"Skye, I think -- "

"Rae, my mother died, I would like to be alone."

"Lets go," Alan looked at Adam as he took Rae's hand and they exited Skye's room

"Sweetheart -- " Adam began.

"Stop -- don't call me that, I'm not your daughter, I'm nothing. And I want you to leave."

"Don't say that," Adam took Skye by her shoulders, "Your mother and I love you, we always have and will continue to even after death. Do you understand?"

"Yeah," Skye whispered as Adam left closing her door behind him, "that's why it hurts so much," she said talking to herself, "God, I hate you Althea, do you hear me?" Skye sobbed and letting her anger take over she cleared her dresser in one fowl swoop smashing her belongings on the floor, she then slid to the floor and curled up against her dresser as Rae came in.

"Shh," Rae quieted Skye down, taking her in her arms, "I know it hurts. Believe me I know," Rae held Skye tightly, stroking her hair, "She'll never be able to hurt you again, all right?"

"Mom -- mom, you don't know."

"Then tell me," Rae's voice seemed to plead with her, "just tell me"
