The avenging Angel
Julie Benz, AKA Darla, talks exclusively to Rob Clark about the new series of Angel

Not many vampires have fought Angel and hung around to tell the tale. Step forward Darla, the vampire who 'sired' him and ,rather confusingly, his lover for over a century. So, who better to ask about the new third season of Angel starting this month on Sky one than the woman who plays her?"It just blows season two out of the water" says actress Julie Benz. "its awesome and surprising - very, very surprising."
Benz's character played a central role in the last season of Angel, tempting and taunting her former lover for having a soul. Says benz "I always think of Darla as the jilted ex-wife of Angel; she will never get over him. I think the reason her character is so popular is that, ultimately, we can all relate to the idea of loving someone who doesn't love us back"
There's an enormous shift in the new series though. Fans may have already heard of Dralas impending pregnancy, But Benz won't be drawn on who the father is. Is Darla going to come over all maternal? "Remember that Darla isn't Human" says Benz "So pregnancy's not going to affect her in the way it would normal people."
The Mood in Season two became increasingly dark, but Benz says of this series "I think they've brought in elements of comedy and drama. There are moments when its dark, dark, dark, but then all of a sudden there is a laugh out lod moment."
So having fought them both, who's the tougher adversary, Buffy or Angel? "Id have to say Angel because there's so much emotion tied up in his relationship with Darla. Its funny how they haven't killed each other yet. Its almost like they can't. The guilt he felt from killing her the first time is too much for him to try it a second time, and she wont kill him because she always harbours the hope that she can turn him back into her Angelus
